Too cool for some.......2005-02-22
Julianne Baird is breathtakingly good at what she does: intelligent, stylistically convincing, technically brilliant ornamentation, in a sweet, phenomenally accurate voice. I love it. Those not accustomed to this sort of thing, though, may find it lacking emotional immediacy. Consider also Kathleen Battle with some of the same material: not that she's better, but the appeal is more directly sensual rather than intellectual.
Ethereal and Hauntingly Beautiful.......2003-11-05
How could you go wrong with the clear seraph voice of Julianne Baird accompanied by the delicate skill of Ronn McFarlane on the Lute. Not only is the talent exceptional but the composed works of Lute music divine.
You listen to each song and are carried away to time/place devoid of any worry let alone any task other than to listen to Julianne and Ronn execute perfection. You truely feel part of the Elizabethan Court listening to this CD it is both beautiful and dark simutaneously.
Another fabulous feature to this CD is the simplicity of the recording of only lute and vocals with no special effects. To retain the warmth and purity of the composition it was recorded on location in 'The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall' in Upstate New York and is one of the finest acoustical settings in the world. Unlike modern pop music Lute music as written needs no manipulation or adjustment in the studio if executed by skilled artists and musicians in an acoustical atmosphere and this recording does exactly that.
I highly recommend this CD of beautiful music. It truely will evoke deep feeling and emotion.

Reviews.......2005-05-07
2005 Pop Album of The Year nominee, L.A. Music Awards.
"Fifth Beatle? Seth Swirsky has recorded a Fab Four - influenced album...a melodic, earnest collection of Beatles - influenced pop."
-Kevin Bronson, Los Angeles Times
"The vibe of this album is just something you have to hear to believe. Bringing up fond memories of such greats as The Beatles, and John Lennon. This is the type of music you play on a hot summer day, with the top down, trucking down the scorching hot interstate. It's just infectious pop music, pure and simple -- A great little slice of pop heaven."
-Trent Moore, Aversion.com
"This release is to the music connoisseur what a gourmet meal is to the hungry restaurant patron -- fulfilling, satisfying, and memorable. "It's Still Love" shows why Seth Swirsky has been referred to as the fifth Beatle. "
-Madd, Evilsponge.org
"...highly pleasurable, low-key pop, often venturing into very stunningly pretty chamber-pop territory."
-Amplifier Magazine
"He'll win fans with his candor (and) understated vocals that work perfectly with his eccentric lyrics. Hammond B3 organ, cello, violin, mandolin, flute and layered vocal harmonies create a production rivaling Revolver-era Beatles.
Overall, Swirsky delivers an album of flawless pop songs. Check it out for some instant-and lasting-pleasure."
-Performing Songwriter Magazine
"Seth writes with the same intimacy that can be found on my favorite tracks from Lennon/McCartney, sixties Paul Simon and more recently Elliott Smith. By the end of the album you feel as if you spent a week at his house guest. I host an all Beatles show yet I play Seth's CD...need I say anymore?"
-Chris Carter, Breakfast with the Beatles, 97.1 KLSX, Los Angeles
"Talk about your instant pleasures! Heh! It seldom gets as immediate as this, boys and girls. Like honey dripping from the beehive, Swirsky pours it on thick and sweet with healthy dollops of pristine power pop. Sophisticated melodies, simple productions and a straightforward delivery will guarantee the sugary pop high only the best pop tunesmiths can dispense. The fact that the Rembrandts and Andy (Jellyfish) Sturmer guest star is mere icing on the cake."
-Kevin Mathews, Nighttimes.com
"Seth's voice is clear, pleasant and understated, never detracting from these uber-catchy melodies and intriguing lyrical portraits."
-Gary Glauber, PopMatters.com
"Swirsky's debut solo album is stocked deep with 11 masterfully crafted, first-class songs that will get inside your head and go so deep, they're likely to grow roots.Mind you, an album so rooted in the pure pop aesthetic isn't an easy creation; if it were, everybody with a guitar would make one just like it. Songwriting smarts this, well, smart, are hard to come by, and harder still to make work for 11 straight songs, but Swirsky, the musical magician, does, and in grand style."
-Alan Haber, Buhdge.com
"...'Butterfly on Jupiter' could have easily turned up on Sgt. Pepper in one incarnation or another."
-Johnny Suede, NoHo LA Magazine
"...a mini-opera, brilliantly utilizing strings, woodwinds, synthesized sounds, and multi-layered harmonies atop a buoyant rhythm section."
-Tom Semioli, Minor7th.com
"Give this one a listen...YOU WILL BE HOOKED!!"
-Jeff Vallet, Jay Vee Music
"While other popsters sing about love and romance in lofty, gossamer terms, Swirsky is Marvin Gaye, whisper-singing "let's get it on" in no uncertain term. The song structure on Instant Pleasure is so beautiful and delicate...so beguiling and seductive.Chances are that you've already heard a Swirsky-written song on the radio over the past ten or fifteen years. When the pendulum eventually swings back towards sanity and away from the dreck that currently dominates the industry, bet on hearing Seth Swirsky singing one of his own songs on your local FM station. Instant Pleasure provides just that, the album marking the emergence of a talented wordsmith and craftsman working in a classic '60s-styled songwriting vein."
-Kevin Gordon, Alt-Culture Guide, mondogordo.com
"...a combination of pop, rock and folk that is delicate and comforting."
-Dina Mystris, Subba-Cultcha.com
"Chock full of sumptious harmonies, stick in the brain choruses, witty lyrics, and swooning melodies, Instant Pleasure evokes all the great pop merchants both old school (the Beatles, the Kinks, Big Star) and new (Eels, Jellyfish, Fountains of Wayne)."
-Gina, EOMentertainment.com
"...both decadent and humble; one part Paul McCartney, two parts Noel Gallagher; a lyrical poet, a whimsy poet."
-Erick Mertz, CosmikDebris.com
"From the opening riff to the last chord, this is high quality stuff that you really shouldn't miss out on. An instant classic."
-PopBang.com
"This album sounds like the Spin Doctors, like Jude, like Sondre Lerche...a poppy, sensitive-guy crooner..."
-JR, Impact Press
"Nicely orchestrated, Swirsky's work is one of those 'tis about time!' recordings."
-phenomeNEWS.com
"Swirsky's story-telling style is engrossing."
-Valley Scene Magazine
"A well-produced, modern, clever pop album"
-Modern.net
"Truly a renaissance man in the classic sense, it's his songs that are his forte and will garner him the ultimate fame and admiration."
-Smother.net
"...a strong, pleasing effort that melds classic styles with the contemporary power-pop genre."
-Liam Thomson, StateofEmergency.net
"...awash in harmony and melody, a throwback to the sounds of more idealistic decades gone by...laced with Beatle spirit, complete with George Harrison-style guitars and dreamy backing harmonies...A beautiful, understated honey of a pop record."
-John Borack, Fufkin.com
"...an Elvis Costello-like tenor. The tracks are perfectly pieces of popular culture, mixing in strong Beatles and shoe-gazer pop (Herman Cherry) in an inoffensive style of music that will reach the largest group in society."
-Neufutur.com
"...irresistible power-pop songs...a distinctly Beatlesque collection, richly textured and crafted.
-David Kidman, NetRhythms.co.uk
"An album full of moments that effortlessly steal you away into the beautiful scenes that Swirsky constructs. Instant Pleasure showcases extraordinary talent and something that has been missing from music at large: depth of content surrounded by irresistible sounds, beautiful, rich and warm and filled with expression. Yes!"
-Bruce Brodeen, NotLame.com
"...the laconic vocals, buoyant melodies, and the occasional admissions of awkward self-doubt make it charming."
-Ian Viggers, Joyzine.co.uk
"One of the best power pop cds to come out this year. Seth Swirsky sounds like a perfect blend of Beatles, Jellyfish and Merrymakers. Fantastic and essential!"

TAKE A HIT SQUAD..........2006-04-27
This guy is a raw nerve of God! I haven't had this one long (this is the 9th BF cd added to my collection, so I have some previous appreciation to add), but my earliest readings are HELL YES! 18 songs here, nearly all hook you in some fashion; guitar, harmony/melody, lyrics, or the excellent drumming. Speaking of drumming, Nick was pretty decent way back when and Andy Ward is one of the greats, but Jules Fenton puts his stamp on this great album as well. I'm trying to drum often lately and I had much fun listening and learning from this guy. Beauty needs to be appreciated and ugliness pointed out! The killer guitar instinct comes ripping through every song, grasping you in it's talons for the duration (Paul Simmons also adding guitar here) - it's rather ugly the way NS picks at the morsels of your consciousness in such an inate, free-flowing but methodical way (I'm a guitar player so it is my pleasure being the lab rat). Some may not think it fits (my 15 yr old son is a BF fan too but balks at horns in rock songs), but trumpets bring a new exotic/jazzy flavoring on a couple of songs, I like! Is that NS's now older daughter Debbie singing here and there - from drumming a little (as a toddler) on Triptych to this - SWEET! Yes, you've got to love this if you're half a rocker (often utilizes headblasting lead tone and slamming power chords, classic RUSH and Robin Trower oddly come to mind?), but the emotional, reflective song-writing also are just as compelling. I am a sucker for power wah, Vox organ and shimmering tremolo, call me old-school.
We are fortunate when musicians with something great to contribute keep it all going with so many excellent albums (for our mutual benefit) ... gladly, the Valedictory stage passed, and that great album wasn't the end ... this beast keeps on truckin'. Would you have tired of Hendrix or SRV had they been able to continue creating? Favorites so far: #1, #3 (one of his best ever), #4, #5 (title song, picture Brian Setzer in a Batman episode), #7, #8, #11, #12, #14, #15, #16, #18 (signature BIG ending - BF stands for Bevis Floyd). They all kick ... there are so many highlights it isn't worth getting into really, you'll have to see if you disagree I guess! I'm sure even the ones left off above will be rooted in me eventually, that is the case with previous albums (update: DAMN, they already are ... doesn't take long). By the way, if you are a musician and like to jam/float along with high energy, psychedelic but beautifully melodic musical mazes, on whatever instrument, you will probably have a blast practicing to this (get out the wah-wah and be taken to school). Bevis Frond and Nick Saloman are criminally absent from the collective consciousness, help remedy the situation (for your own edification at least) and get ahold of this ASAP. 78:40 min, including a nice booklet with all lyrics and funny artwork. I would say trust me, but that seems like a lot to ask these days where no two people seem to agree on anything ... TRUST ME ANYWAY- THIS ROCKS (as do his other albums - no, I'm not the 20th pundit - just sharing thoughts on music that interests me)!
Thanks BF for carrying the torch (and being true to your musical vision/sound) through the mamby/pambient, techno gangsta, marketing shinola music phase the world is stuck in right now. Someone with pointy ears, concerned for the needs of the many, once said to a guy named Bones (mind meld): "REMEMBER!", before perishing in the toxic atmosphere. Even if you end up being the only one left, and it drives you frickin' insane, at least the seed is still planted. May it bloom again...
Enter his world if you may..... .......2006-03-30
I finally pulled the trigger on Mr.Salomon's band - The Bevis Frond, very obscure indeed. Which of course is a good thing. The UK has given us music buffs many a songwriting hero, esp in their latter days, e.g Paul Weller, Robyn Hitchcock, Martin Newell, Julian Cope to name a few, what do we have here in their heydey Billy Joel, Springsteen, please! those loads bite hard. Anyway, Hit Squad rocks, pure & simple, the opening track is one of many memorable ditties and the real standout is 'Through the Hedge, truly amazing - aside from the last two tunes - one being a 'black dog' re-write - puke! This is incredibly consistent and fun album, With an unmatched arsenal of albums in the can, I have a distinct feeling I'll be back for more debauchery with the Bevis Frond.
Nick Saloman just keeps getting better with age!.......2004-10-19
It's been a couple of years since the last Frond release and I was beginning to wonder when there was going to be another one. Well it's here and it was worth the wait. While you won't find any ten plus minute instrumental freakouts here, you will find 78 minutes of excellent music that remind me very much of the classic "New River Head" album. This is British rock at its finest which provides a wonderful balance between the quieter, thoughtful material, the rockers, and the amusingly campy title track. Another outstanding album!

Impressive recording of cello works by Hungarian composers.......2002-03-13
This new Harmonia Mundi release by Jean-Guihen Queyras, a name previously unknown to me, is quite impressive. In it, the young cellist performs works by Kodaly, Kurtag and Veress with Alexandre Tharaud as his partner in those pieces written for cello and piano. The centrepiece of this album is no doubt Kodaly's Sonata for Solo Cello, Op.8. Not having the benefit of experiencing Janos Starker in this awesome work (which would probably be the top recommendation for many), I found Queyras' playing to be quite remarkable. Not only does he possess a formidable technique, his tone is consistently beautiful and his dynamic control superb. However, his interpretation may prove to be controversial as he makes this gruelling piece not only sound easy but also rather playful and witty. Although I do have some doubts about such an interpretation (I tend to prefer a more anguished and emotionally tortuous rendition), purely from a musical perspective, there are actually much to commend in this performance. And perhaps his in indeed a viable interpretation - I found myself warming to it more and more after each successive hearing, which perhaps attests to the persuasive power of Queyras' slightly idiosyncratic reading.
The other pieces in this album (and there're quite a few interesting ones) also receive very fine treatment. Queyras is no less commanding in the Veress's Sonata for Solo Cello and he is able to invest those short pieces of Kurtag with character, sometimes within the spaces of just a few bars. Alexandre Tharaud is an excellent partner to Queyras in Kodaly's Sonatina, which may be the abandoned alternative movement for the 1909 Sonata for Cello and Piano (not featured in this CD), and the two talented musicians conjure up a meltingly tender and yearning Adagio for Cello and Piano as the concluding track for this fine project of cello works by three great Hungarian composers. Given that the recording is warm and atmospheric, this is a very enjoyable CD. I do look forward eagerly to future new releases by Queyras, and also Tharaud.

NOT HIS BASSEST HIT.......2001-04-07
I would call myself a DJ Magic Mike fan, and if pure bass is what you're looking for, don't buy this. I'd reccommend one of his other CD's,"Foundations of Bass". But this CD is more lyrical than his other albums and is not very good in my opinion. There are a few tight tracks, but the overall CD is not very good. Track 3 is just plain tight. So, if you want some mediocre rap with good bass, buy this CD. If you just want beats with big bass, buy Foundations of Bass or some other CD.

Inspired playing by Scott........1999-09-01
Scott is one of my favorite musicians, and this is one of my favorite CDs. This is one of Scott's first releases on Concord, and he sounds relaxed and inspired in this setting. The title refers to the fact there is no bass player, the bass lines instead being provided by Dave McKenna's left hand. Dave stretches out here, and Jake Hanna, one of the tastiest drummers around, has a great solo on "Drum Boogie." They seem to enjoy themselves on this recording. The results sparkle.
Mainstream jazz at its best...buy it!.......1998-12-01
Typically solid performance by Scott. Dave McKenna, however, carries this CD. There is no need for a bass player here, Dave's left hand does more than any bass player could with walking bass lines, stride, strumming, etc. This is a fun CD to listen to, old standards given a fresh, swinging sound by absolute masters.
