This compilation of previously released material gathers the best-known tunes sung by women in Andrew Lloyd Webber's repertoire. Do all the singers here count as divas? A surprisingly high number certainly does. A few offer both outsize personality and outsize pipes: Betty Buckley ("Memory"), Patti LuPone ("Buenos Aires"), Barbra Streisand ("As If We Never Said Goodbye"). Some don't have as much name recognition but still offer blistering readings of famous songs (Yvonne Elliman's vintage version of "I Don't Know How to Love Him," from Jesus Christ Superstar). Others go for nuance, like Marti Webb and her lovely "Tell Me on a Sunday" or Barbara Dickson's "Another Suitcase in Another Hall." And then there are the ones who pull through on sheer bravado: Madonna and her vibrato-laden "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," Glenn Close's harsh "With One Look"--both of them making you long for La LuPone. (In which universe Minnie Driver counts as a diva is anybody's guess.) The overall track selection offers a fairly standard overview of Sir Andrew's career, though it does include Kiri Te Kanawa's "The Heart Is Slow to Learn," from the aborted sequel to Phantom. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Worth the one song alone!.......2007-03-04
This is a great collection of some of the most divine ladies of the screen and stage giving their talent to ALWs most memorable tunes.
The only song I would pass over is Betty Buckleys rendition of Memory-just horrid. The highlight of this cd is the rare gem of a song that is The Heart Is Slow To Learn, one of the most dramatic performances ever by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, this song was written for a proposed sequel to Phantom Of The Opera and is hard to find anywhere else. If you want this song without buying the (IMO) severly lacking ALW Now and Forever box set-this is your only option-and well worth it.
If you like Broadway tunes..........2007-02-07
This has music sung by women in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals. There is a wide variety of types of songs, all exceptional.
Back to Broadway..........2007-01-12
I loved this album..the songs that are sung have taken me back as to when I saw them in the theatre. The only problem I have is when Patti LuPone was not singing ' Don't Cry for me Argentina ' I felt it was a song she created on Broadway and was always destined to sing..that was my only downside..very minor..otherwise I love ' THE DIVA'S '.
Not as good as I thought it would be.......2007-01-09
I love anything that is Andrew Lloyd Webber, and while the music is, as always, wonderful, some of the artists that they selected to sing it were less than stellar.
The Divas.......2007-01-05
A most high quality of entertainment I have purchased in a fantastically long time. The blending of individual voices which culminated in a preformance which uplifted the mind and spirit of my entire family.

Album Description
Remember when "diva" was a mantle of honor bestowed on only the finest singers, the grandest dames of song, rather than just the latest streetcorner chanteuse? During the early 1950's, the big bands were winding down and rock 'n' roll was revving up. Meantime, many former "girl singers" stepped off the bandstand and into the spotlight as soloists, and the great age of the diva began. Names like "Patti Page," "Teresa Brewer," or "Dinah Shore" evoked not just a popular song or an alluring look, but a voice - fascinating, unique, and timeless. For those talented women, "diva" was more than a mere marketing tool, it was a well-earned title.
For their debut release, Hit Parade Records presents a delightful, distaff tour through those wonderful years. This 61-minute disc overflows with 23 gems from the finest female singers of the decade digitally remastered for the highest quality sound!
Hit Parade Records is a new Canadian label dedicated to finding, restoring, and preserving lost treasures like these. Hit Parade was assisted by the same creative folks who lovingly compile those great Eric CD's - including Greg Adams, whose detailed liner notes will fascinate you as you listen to all the Fabulous Fifties Divas! And, don't miss Hit Parade's manly companion album, Fabulous Fifties Crooners.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of lost 45's (and maybe even 78's) in this terrific new collection from Canada's Hit Parade records.......2007-01-26
If you are over the age of 60 I am sure you would remember most of them. As far as I know the vast majority of these tunes have been out of print for decades. In 2006, Hit Parade records based in Ontario, Canada released this marvelous collection entitled "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits". For collectors this is a virtual treasure trove of classic 1950's pop tunes. And even though I have been collecting for more than 40 years now there were around ten songs I had never even heard before. I had an awful lot of fun just sampling many of these tunes for the very first time.
Now there certainly are some mighty big hits among the nearly two dozen tunes that appear on this disc. Perhaps my favorite is Patti Page's 1954 #2 smash "Cross Over The Bridge". I doubt that Sarah Vaughn was capable of making a bad record. You will find two of her memorable hits on this disc including her rendition of "Mr. Wonderful" as well as the flirtatious "Make Yourself Comfortable" that also made the Top Ten in 1954. And of course the great Teresa Brewer had any number of big hits in those days. You will find both "Let Me Go, Lover" and "A Tear Fell" included as well.
As I mentioned earlier, "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" also includes about a dozen songs that had virtually disappeared years ago and were impossible to find anywhere at any price. Among these is the original version of "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" which was a #5 hit for one Karen Chandler on the old Coral label back in 1952. And then there is Jaye P. Morgan's "The Longest Walk" from 1955. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind I remember hearing that one when I was a kid but I had not heard this song for over 40 years! You will also find hits by great female vocalists like June Valli, Rosemary Clooney and Gogi Grant and many others. And in the category of "hidden gems" I would recommend to you track 21 "Blue Star(The "Medic" Theme)" by Felicia Sanders, a cabaret singer I had never even heard of. That one just might be the best song in the entire collection. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits" concludes with the legendary British songstress Vera Lynn belting out her 1953 hit version of the great World War II classic "We'll Meet Again". It doesn't get much better than that!
For those who might be concerned that these might be cheap re-recordings let me assure you that these are all the original hit versions you would remember from the radio. Also included is a neat 8 page booklet with information on all of these fine ladies as well as the Billboard chart information on each and every one of these tunes. "Fabulous 50's Divas Sing Their Hard To Find Hits' was a great addition to my collection. I eagerly look forward to more releases from this label. If you love this music, it would be a great addition to your library as well. Highly recommended.
Give this one a try also.......2006-07-03
Another gem from the people at Eric Records, home of the Hard to Find series. As with the Crooners CD this one has excellent sound quality; better than the compliation and individual artist CD's that I already own.
A great selection of arists and songs with mostly big hits from the 50-55 era including two songs that I have never before found on any CD - "If I Give My Heart to You" by Denise Lor and "I Understand" by June Valli.
Being a child of the 50's and 60's and being around to witness the birth of Rock 'n' Roll, I have always been a collector of the Rock music of the era. However, I have now found a new appreciation for the early 50's music of my parents and it's great to have series such as these to help me relive the old songs.
There are still lots of songs out there that are not available on CD so I hope that this series will continue.

Customer Reviews:
Great music, low quality recordings.......2007-04-17
As a DJ of 20 years I was happy to find such a great quantity of extended mixes on one disc. Unfortunately the copy I purchased seemed lacking in sound quality to the point that I could not use it in a professional setting. Although for personal use what a great collection
not always extended versions as it says..........2005-08-09
Disco Nights is a pretty good series, but it always promises Extended Club Play Versions on front, and that's not always the case. You sometimes get 7" versions--and sometimes they even EDIT the 12" versions, which is a shame, because there are a good number of long versions on each volume. This volume gives you:
1. Shame (6:35)
2. Heaven Knows (5:58) (This incredible extended version is actually an edit of the even longer version available on Disco Nights: DJ Pix!!!)
3. I Will Survive (6:31) (edit of the 12" version)
4. I Love the Nightlife (5:40)
5. If I Can't Have You (4:04) (a poorly made "extended" version)
6. I Need A Man (4:59) (not the 12" version!!!)
7. Ring My Bell (6:17) (edit of the 12")
8. Got to Be Real (5:09)
9. turn the beat around (5:34)
10. Fame (5:16)
11.What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin (4:42)
12. Last Dance (5:51) (edit of the 12")
5 PLUS******STARS! SO MANY GREAT CUTS!.......2005-04-21
I agree with another reviewer that this is probably the creme-de-la-creme of this series. Contains killer dance cuts like Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Shame," one of the absolute hottest 70's dance tracks, if not the all-time greatest. Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," also ranks as one of the very best, and is incredibly moving. Vicky-Sue Robinson's original "Turn The Beat Around," is also one of the all-time high points of 70's dance music. And, great dance classics like Donna Summer's "Last Dance," Alicia Bridges' "I Love The Night Life (Disco Round)," and Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell," are included here, also in their full-length glory. What fun! The remaining tracks are just fine, with absolutely no clunkers. GRAB THIS ONE!
Most of them are great.......2003-08-14
Ah, disco. A music which saw women take center stage on many occasions. I love to put on this collection when I'm biking, it gives me energy to workout and I can sing along. The variety is pretty good, in fact, some of the selections are rather horrible but we can't like everything. This was the second of this series that I purchased and I'm very glad I did. Think I'll go bike and sing "I Will Survive" right now.
Dance Dance Dance the whole time! Great CD!.......2002-09-25
Personally, I feel that this is the best of the Disco Night collection. The best disco artists are on this CD with Donna Summer singing 2 songs. A great start for any disco beginner.
You can't help but toe tap through the entire album. The CD appropriately ends with Donna Summer singing "Last Dance." brings back memories of those last days of disco, eh? Closin' out the place!
Everyone will wonder what you are singing and dancing to in the car when you listen to this CD. A wonderful collection of songs from disco's greatest Divas!

Customer Reviews:
a very good buy ................................2004-02-02
A pretty impressive album and the use of the word "Diva" is aptly used here with maybe the exception of Toni Braxton (who is a great singer) but has she had the longevity to justify a Diva title? of course an Ultimate Divas II might address the omission of Celine Dion,Cher and as a personal note i would like to have seen Nina Simone's "My baby dont care" as a footnote Artetha Franklyn performing "Nessun Dorma" was/is incredible and a nice ending treat.
From Billie, Lena and Judy to Patti, Whitney and Aretha.......2003-07-24
Clearly there are two standards for evaluating a hits collection such as "Ultimate Divas," which proclaims that it has assembled the greatest female vocalists of our time (The first caveat is that you have to have been around for about a half-century for Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Judy Garland to be a part of "our" time). The first and most important standard is whether or not these are indeed the greatest female vocalists that you could put together on one album (the second caveat seems to be that the singers are of child bearing age as of 1999, since the wunderkind of the bunch is either Toni Braxton or Mary J. Blige, but I am not looking up dates of birth). This album starts with Billie Holiday and ends with Aretha Franklin, it has Lena, Horne, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, you get Tina Turner and Diana Ross, there is Annie Lennox and Toni Braxton, and you have Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston and that still leaves four more. Who is missing? Well, Barbra Streisand is the obvious voice choice for me; my kids would probably say Mariah Carey and if you are talking women of power there would be Madonna and Janet Jackson. But even if you do not think the talent level grades out at A+ it still has to be a solid A.
The other criteria is what the Divas sing on this album. Of the 17 Divas less than half are signing their signature tunes. Getting "yes" votes on the topic would be Billie Holiday's "My Man," Lena Horne's "Stormy Weather," Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow," Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It," Annie Lennox's "Why," Diana Ross's "Touch Me In The Morning," and Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart." This is not to dismiss the rest of the tracks. Ella Fitzerald's "Someone To Watch Over Me" is a personal favorite, and "I Have Nothing" shows off Whitney Houston's voice as well as anything. The rest are fine, but the treat for me is Aretha Franklin's "Nessun Dorma," which I remember from the 1998 Grammy Awards.
The Queen of Soul was already scheduled to sing one song and when Luciana Pavarotti bowed out at the last moment she not only agreed to sing another song in his place, she sang his song. If you have ever heard Pavarotti you have probably heard him do this tenor aria from Puccini's "Turandot" because it is his standard encore piece. I thought hearing Franklin do "I Had a Dream" from "Les Miserables" on the 1992 Inaugural show was a treat, but this was just awesome. I would have graded "Ultimate Divas" out at 4.5 overall but I have to round up just because you get this track. For everybody else my best advice is to pay attention to the first criteria and not the second. On this collection you probably have the songs you really like, so picking up this album is your opportunity to example your notion of Diva-ness. Give Britney, Christina and the rest of the youngsters and go for the finely aged voices from the past.
What Is In A Diva?.......2003-05-24
Sometimes, various artists compilations seem to click in, once you feel that certain kind of rhythm. In the case of a diva, you have to let it touch you straight from the heart. With this case of divas collections, you must enjoy all of them, not a couple like I do. This Divas collection, is just another example of what should try to make up a various artists compliation, a good head, and a good knowledge of what a diva is.
With the various artists collection Ultimate Divas, is a sampler containing some of the biggest hit divas in the music industry. Although in my case, I would buy it, if I can find it. There are so many divas to really choose from, with some of their biggest songs, from Patti LaBelle's If Only You Knew, to Annie Lennox's classic ballad, Why. There are also some of the greatest movie ballads on there, including Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing from The Bodyguard, and the late Judy Garland classic, Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
Although this collection is nice as part of the clearance rack, there could be a second volume of this Divas collection in the works. There were so many overlooked divas that could've been added like Vanessa Williams, Mariah Carey, Natalie Cole, and even Anita Baker. Hopefully, Arista will put that into consideration.
Disappointing Divas.......2002-12-19
Okay so many of the important women pop singers are represented but they aren't singing their best songs and it's a stretch to call some of these singers Ultimate anything. If you want ultimate, look for indivdual albums or the ultimate Diva record:
Lena Horne, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, that's cooking.
Nessun dorma ! Hair on fire........2001-09-06
Nessun dorma is a more than beautiful aria, but sung like gospel soul...? That was different. If you like gospel, you will love it. If you are an opera singer, you will run down the street screaming with your hair on fire!

This long-overdue collection shines a light on the lesser-known side of James Brown's musical empire: the ladies. And what ladies--seriously soulful songbirds like Lyn Collins ("The Female Preacher"), Vicki Anderson and Yvonne Fair, bawdy blues shouter Elsie Mae ("T.V. Mama"), and the unheralded Marva Whitney, who unleashes the hip-hop sample staple "Unwind Yourself." There are also two tracks from a young singer named Tammy Montgomery, who after leaving Brown's tutelage would sign with Motown and emerge as Tammi Terrell. From big hits like Collins's "Think (About It)" to obscure singles such as Elsie Mae's "Do You Really Want to Rescue Me, Part 1" (an answer to Fontella Bass's "Rescue Me"), this two-CD anthology is sheer R&B heaven and essential for fans of gritty, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, "You better think, boy" anthems. --Amy Linden

SIMPLY AMAZING AT FIRST LISTEN.......2006-12-29
this one dives deep, now. everytime i hear this double cd, i think of two hip hop joints: IT'S MY THING by epmd and NO TIME by lil kim. the two songs they came.....................WAIT A MINUTE, IT TAKES TWO by rob base and dj easy rock of course!!!!! the THREE songs that these three classics came from plus kay robinson's funky version of THE LORD WILL MAKE A WAY SOMEHOW just does it for me. i love blowing dust off rare stuff, now. you like doing that too, check this one out.
Roll Over Rover.......2005-07-16
This is the missing 4th volume to James Brown's legendary "JB's Funky People" series - although there are actually more tracks on this CD set than on all 3 Funky People albums combined, and many of the same female vocalists. The two CDs are roughly chronological, with disc one representing more of the 1950s and '60s bepob era, and disc two moving into the heavier '70s funk. Disc two is some of the funkiest music you will ever hear, and the tracks are taken from some incredibly hard to find albums: you'll really have to pay through the nose to track down playable copies of Vicki Anderson's "Message From A Soul Sister," or Lyn Collins's "Think (About It)." It's unfortunate that only early work from Yvonne Fair makes the collection, since tracks from her later LP "The Bitch Is Black" would fit right in with the other disc two material.
Of course, you have to pay through the nose for THIS album on Amazon, too. If you are not a collection fetishist, and just want the music, you can actually download the album for a lot cheaper through MSN Music or even the new commercial Napster (roughly $18-$20 at either of these). Sorry Amazon!
mothers of the funk.......2001-07-30
these are the most famous funky divas who sang for james brown, all of these are long lost treasures, another branch of the jb funk tree few even knew existed, history is included as well, lyn collins think about it is a classic that song has been sampled to death like anything else james brown made, vicki anderson soul sisters is good bootsy on bass, funk gelore then supergood that is so funky, bootsy bumps on the bass tip, plus catfish rocked maggot brain style, the cut we want to party love the bass line, maceo jams the sax in waya only he knew how. i like take me just as i am, lyn collins goes off -plus maceo blows another sax riff legendary. if you like james brown music please get this to explore some real long lost funk classics.
funky they are the divas.......2001-06-12
overlooked divas, good collection of james most well known female singers. hell for the whole entourage would take another double cd. my favorite is supergood catfish bangs the guitar maggot brain style and bootsy rips the bass as well. like they did on the gospel cut the lord will make a way somehow. you don't work features marva whitney and james. this is soul maceo blows up but the sound is low you don't care caues it still kicks. lyn collins we want to party bumps too.too bad these jams are long lost.r.i.p yvonne fair, and tammi terrell, and st. clair pickney, cheese, jimmy nolen, country kellum,
funky they are the divas.......2001-06-12
a part of the james brown legacy few explored, includes some of james best divas, liner notes include history on the divas, the jb's work their ...off, brown does some cameo's himself, tammi terrell sings i cried i love that she was best known as marvin gaye's duet partner, marva whitney, and the godfather show us how to funk on you don't work you can't eat i like this better than bobby byrd's version, the groove is funkier and maceo rips even though it's low you are still feeling this. vicki anderson comes in with message from the soul sisters love the piano ghetto right here, but supergood was vicki at her best bootsy kicks booty on the bass but catfish plays guitar like he heard funkadelic was in town, vicki, and husband booby byrd did a nice remake of you're welcome stop on by, lyn collins was on here with think about it one of the most sampled songs in history, listen to it and folks 25 and over will agree weith me, take me just as i am is the bomb maceo on sax took me to funkland, then we want to party i love how lyn sang that at the end, another sax solo by maceo, those are my favorite tracks on this double cd if you love james brown and want to hear how some of his best divas sounded this is for if you can't get enough of maceo parker, and fred wesley this is for you though i recommend the jb's horns, and the jb's doing it to death.

Like the Supremes, En Vogue were the perfect mixture of fabrication and fabulousness. On their blockbuster second CD, the four women set the standards for female black pop. Blessed with killer vocals and a sizzling set of songs that married funk, rock, and slinky soul, Funky Divas remains the career highlight of a "girl group" that transcends the label. --Amy Linden

En Vogue - Funky Divas.......2007-04-09
So I was inspired to buy this the other day because lately, I've just been craving some good ol' 90's R&B music, you know? I really wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do. Some songs go on a little too long and there were one or two songs I just didn't care for, like "Hip Hop Lover." But the rest is great and I really enjoyed it. These are some talented women and they can truly harmonize! Unlike another reviewer, I actually enjoyed the spoken word sections and I think they add a lot of personality to the disc. I especially love the little dictionary bit at the end of "What Is Love." I highly recommend this.
Another girl group doomed 2 split, but oh how they sang!.......2006-04-20
Of all the girl groups to blossom in the 1990s, this one by far and away was the best at singing (yup, TLC and Destiny's Child might've been more popular but neither group could touch En Vogue voice for voice among group members).
That being said, En Vogue really should get credit for, much like Salt-N-Pepa and Mary J. Blige, blending elements of hip hop, girl power and overwhelming sassy-sexy-soulful femininity into urban music where it hadn't been before.
If Mary bridged hip hop to R&B, En Vogue pretty much did the same to that 1950s doo-wop style that was masterfully resurrected and appreciated circa 1991.
"(My Lovin')You're Never Gonna Get It," "Free Your Mind" and the remake of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" are all classic En Vogue flava.
I guess groups -- and girl groups in particular -- are doomed to split up when they go on tour and have to hear fans critique everything about them (who's the prettiest? who's the best singer? blah, blah, blah).
But unlike so many imitators to come along and try to pimp the En Vogue hip hop/R&B sound, En Vogue really was the real deal.
TLC, Destiny's Child and the Supremes are probably the super groups of the 20th Century, but En Vogue blazed a trail that laid the groundwork for two of the aforementioned to follow.
Recommended LP.
Funky Divas Indeed!.......2006-03-05
Back in the early 90's En Vogue was a quartet that consisted Black California Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, Dawn Robinson, and Terry Ellis, and just like many other early 90's groups they blended Hip Hop & R&B and En Vogue did it with great results. They were one of the most succesful girl groups since Supreemes, but apart from the 60's group En Vogue didn't have 1 leadsinger but 4. The 1990 Debut album was a decent success, and it gave them 2 hits "Hold On" that hit #2 on the Billboard charts and "Lies", but "Funky Divas" from 1992 was clearly the album of their life and the hit singles were only getting more and richer. Funky Divas delivers a great blend of diversity (Soul, Pop, Hip Hop, Dance and Rock), intellegent pop lyrics and hit singles, it also completely filler free. Infact it gave them 5 hits.
Funky Divas starts with a funky number called "This Is Your Love", although it got a long annoying interlude it's a very catchy song that mixes, soul, funk and pop. The lyrics say "This is your life, You Got To Live it Your Own Way", second song is the well known "My Lovin',(You're Never Gonna Get It)" a catchy girl power pop-soul song that I bet most people have heard. "Hip Hop Lover" combines what this early 90's Soul era was famous for, R&B and Hip Hop, it also feautures a guest rap. The rocky "Free Your Kind", is a song about prejudices and differences in the society, it came after the Los Angeles Riots and the lyrics couldn't make more sense "Free Your Mind and the Rest Will Follow, be Colorblind, don't be so Shallow". "Desire" is a fabolous slow paced exotic song that feautures horns, and gives a passionate and laid back feeling. "Give Him Something He Needs" a cover of a Curtis Mayfield song, the girls version is cool and jazzy.
"It Ain't over Till the Fat Lady Sings" another Hip Hop Sounding song, but they sound more like Salt N Pepa then a soul group on this song. "Give It Up, Turn It Loose" is great and resembles "My Lovin" alot. "Yesterday" is a cover of the well known Beatles song, (probably the most covered song in history!), This version is completely diffrent though, it doesn't sound like the same song, they make it their own with this soulish version for sure. "Hooked On Your Love" is incredibly catchy musically with it's horns, the song itself is a laid back sexy soul number also a Mayfield interpretation. "Love Don't Love You" another uptempo soul/pop song and "What Is Love" sounds like a mixure of Soul and Dance, ready for the clubs.
Overall, A fantastic album that I'll give 5 starts for it's catchyness and 5 for it's diversity and mixure of genres. This is truly a unique but a little overlooked album from the early 90's when Soul sounded fresh and full of new ideas. Credits to En Vogue and producers Foster/Mc Elroy cause this album got it all.
a throwback to another time.......their strongest album...........2005-10-18
What set En Vogue apart from the numerous other "girl groups" of the 1990s, was their ability to blend, with their outstanding vocal abilities and songs that sound like they came straight of MoTown circa 1960. This album is a stellar example of their ability to make us feel like we were truly listening to the best of "old school."
The most outstanding songs worth mentioning include:
Track #6 "Giving Him Something He Can Feel"
This is one of the slow, sexy tracks that they sing so well. This is actually an old r&b song that was featured in the cult film, SPARKLE, about an all girls group (similar to Diana Ross and the Supremes).
Track #8 "Give It Up, Turn It Lose"
This is more upbeat, and greatly utilizes their wonderful vocals and expression in a song about getting over a man who is no good.
This is timeless music that stands the test of time, more than ten years later. I don't think they have another album that quite measured up to this one.......
great talents.......2005-06-11
these ladies are great talents, though all the songs are not representative of that. Free Your Mind, Never Gonna Get It, Desire, Hip Hop Love are the best jams on this CD but I don't really care for the rest though the vocals are superb. The sounds in the music are beginning to show their age and this album was a period piece, but it sure does bring back memories of enjoying the raw vocal talent and killer grooves and sassiness of en vogue being en vogue. I truly believe that salt n pepa started the girl group hip hop trend, but en vogue started the girl group r&b trend in the 90's(since the supremes) and since then, many r&b and/or hip hop flavoured girl groups with amazing voices followed in the 1990's such as TLC, SWV, Jade, Xscape, Zhane, 702, Total, it's like every music label had an r&b girl group and they were all competing, but en vogue paved the way for it and for that they will be treasured as modern-day supremes. I can't wait to hear their comeback album in 2006 with the original members, it'll be great. I also recommend the best of en vogue and masterpiece theatre, which samples hooks from classical music over r&b melodies.

Still the best of the lot.......2006-12-15
This initial offering in the VH1 DIVAS series remains the finest of all of these live concert albums issued by that cable TV company. High power performances, great sound quality, excellent musicianship and song selection make VH1 DIVAS LIVE as fun to listen to today as watching the concert was back in 1998. A terrific document of six* marvelously talented true-to-life divas. That means you, too Gloria!
*(Carole King went uncredited on the CD front cover)
a great potpourri. . ........2006-08-03
No matter what your taste, you are sure to find it here. As the first Divas Live show (the others that followed were pale comparisons), this one packs quite a wallop! This being New York, the energy exchanged and given by the performers and the audience is palpable! Indeed, each of the celebrated Divas were at their best. For me the highlights included Shania Twain (she may play the role of a silly glamour girl at times, but the yearning in her voice is REAL and what a voice, what a revelation)! The dignity of Carole King was great as was that--and the incomparable majesty--of Aretha Franklin. And while I am not really a fan of Gloria Estefan, her performance can't really be faulted--even if she sorely lacks the punch of the other singers. Finally, what can one say that hasn't already been said about Mariah and Celine? They were great, I loved them all and each of them deserved their due. A DVD definitely worth having. . .
DIVAS RULE! ESPECIALLY CELINE!.......2003-07-31
It's all about Celine Dion on this first ever VH1 Divas Live concert!
It all kicks off on rather a mellow note with Mariah Carey singing her ultimate power ballad, "My All". She then continues with her not so great track "Make It Happen", probably the worst song of the night.
The only way is up from there though when legendary latin diva Gloria Estefan takes the stage. She belts out "Turn The Beat Around" and her newest single "Heaven's What I Feel". But it isn't until she performs a medley of her biggest hits that the crowd really gets going! A megamix of "Dr. Beat", "Conga", "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You", "1-2-3" and "Get On Your Feet" really brings down the house and is one of the highlights of the night.
It is then the turn of Aretha Franklin who performs "Chain Of Fools" with Mariah Carey, a classic duet between two huge divas. (Aretha also performed "A Rose Is Still A Rose" on the show but it is not included on the CD).
Shania Twain is next, VH1 were critisised when they added Shania to the show because many said she wasn't a diva, but she silenced all of her critics when she sang "Man!I Feel Like A Woman" and her beautiful love song "You're Still The One".
But it is Celine Dion who steals the show when the normally ballad-associated diva belted out the Tina Turner classic, "River Deep, Mountain High". She then returns to her ballads and performs "The Reason" with special guest diva, Carole King. But it is her performance of her multi-selling hit "My Heart Will Go On" that is the highlight of the night.
Celine then returns with Carole King, Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain to perform the second best song of the night; a cover of Carole's "You've Got A Friend". Beautifully sung by all four women. Then the moment everyone had been waiting for, the all diva finale. Celine, Aretha, Gloria, Shania, Mariah and Carole performed "Natural Woman". It was however rather a disappointment because every diva was trying to out sing the others and it just wasn't working.
It is a good CD and worth the money!
those beautiful girls.......2003-02-01
i couldnt wait till this show airedit all starts with mariah carrey even though i dont care for her she gave it her all and there came gloria estefan singing her best songs then the true diva aretha franklin singing with mariah carrey aretha should have sung by herself.shania twain was next.then came celion dion she sung with caroll king ad then did my heart will go on.but the best about the diva show was when the girls did you,ve got a friend and then aretha said its church time
Mariah, Gloria, Shania, Aretha, Celine.......2002-09-16
5 Divas and as a special guest the singer and songwriter Carole King.
My all: The opener is a wonderful ballad by Mariah Carey
Make it happen: An older one taken from Mariah's second album "Emotions". It sounds different and this version is A LOT better than the version on the album
Turn the beat around: As the title says a funky dance song. It's by the latin-Superstar GLoria Estefan
Heaven's what I feel: I love this romantic song. Gloria sings it with so much emotion
Medley: She sings her greatest dance-hits for instance "1-2-3" and "Conga"
Man! I feel like a woman: By Shania Twain. She sounds live much better than on record.
You're still the one: Shania's "big ballad". I love it"
Chain of fools: By Aretha Franklin and Mariah Carey This is a gospel-blues-song. I don't like Aretha's music that much but she has a great voice.
River deep mountain high: A dance-song by Celine Dion. One of her worst songs
The reason: The power balld. Celine sings it with Carole King who has also written this song
My heart will go on: Is there anybody who doesn't know this? it's still beautiful
Yo've got a friend: A very famous song sung by Carole King, Celine Dion, GLoria Estefan and Shania Twain
A natural woman: And altogether now"gg" This song is by Aretha Franklin. Celine Dion has a nice coverversion on her "Falling into you-Album"
Testimony: Aretha sings most of the leadvocals. Again a Gospelsong.

Dance Divas.......2007-07-20
It is a great dance mix. I highly recommend it to those who like variety.
All Mixes.......2006-05-27
This is a great collection of Divas. Aretha, Whitney and Toni among others. They are so famous you don't even need last names. I remember when you had to buy a remix single and pay $7-10. Now you get 15 remixes on one CD. The reason this CD doesn't get 5 stars is that every song sounds remixed. Dido's ThankYou doesn't sound like the ThankYou I've loved. It has a great dance beat but I hardly recognize the song. My favorite mixes are Pink's "You Make Me Sick" and Taylor Dayne's "Tell It To My Heart". Don't buy this CD if you think your're getting the original songs but if you are a fan of dance music then this is a great CD.
Grandes Dames of Dance Music.......2006-04-13
There are divas and there are divas. I remember reading reviews of one of those VH1 Divas concerts (I believe it was the second, the one that featured Aretha), all pretty much saying that Sister Ree pretty much blew everybody else (i.e. all those pseudo-divas) right off the stage.
But is Aretha a DANCE diva. I'm not an expert, but dance tracks may or may not be vocal tour de forces. The Queen of Soul's sole track on this compilation, "A Deeper Love," is a pretty good dance re-mix, and Aretha is in fine form vocally, but even though she is give the honor of leading off the collection, it really is only one of many good tracks. In other words, being THE Diva on stage may still only make you one of many deities on the dance floor.
Which is not to say that Aretha or any other big voiced singer (Deborah Cox and Blu Cantrell come to mind from this collection) is done a disservice by being included in a dance remix album. Far from it, remixes give any singer another forum in which to be showcased. And most of these tracks do show off their vocalists to pretty good effect.
I always used to think that Remixes were just for the dance floor--and for completist fans of given artist. A Dido fan might feel s/he simply MUST by this collection for the Deep Dish REmix version of "Thank You." That wouldn't be me, but as someone who liked Dido's first album quite a bit, I can't say that I'm unhappy to have this track included on this record.
Same with the Annie Lennox cut. I've always liked "No More 'I Love You's'," and while I wouldn't necessarily rush out and buy the remix as a single, it's a treat to have the Junior Vasquez treatment on this release. It's incorporation of "Take Me to the River" is a brilliant stroke.
Bottom Line: Lots of good stuff here. Well worth checking out.
music for the diva's soul.......2003-11-24
This CD is like the diva's soundtrack, containing tracks from some of the most successful, most well known female artists with the most powerful of voices.
Divas have been known for their attitude, and this CD is nothing but...
My favorites being "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" by Whitney Houston, and "Hit the Freeway" by Toni Braxton, both being amazingly remixed to a faster, more funner beat.
This album is guaranteed to get your heart thumping.

Their Name is No Mistake!.......2006-12-22
At first listen, this album shatters the sophomore jinx. Even though this is their debut effort, this entire collection showcases a rare talent unique to first efforts. Why? Throughout this entire collection, it sounds as if these ladies were miraculously brought together by divine providence. As with every perfect combination, each voice blends, compliments and shines on its own WITHOUT overpowering the others. It's as if this quartet already well-versed themselves in the dynamics and virtues of pure harmony.
As if anyone needs proof, take a listen to their perfect debut--yes the SAW/PWL diamond "This Time I Know It's For Real". Although originally brought to immortality by Donna Summer, the Divas manage the impossible. By incorporating the powerhouse vocals of all four, "This Time" becomes not only their first platinum single but, *both* a club anthem and new dance classic for a new crowd and millennium.
As another set of stunning examples, more exhibits in the SAW/PWL masterpiece sound theatre receive this same dynamic treatment-- "Happenin' All Over Again," "Searchin'" and "Say I'm Your No. 1"--all with the unmistakable perfection that these Divas deliver so well. Tracks originally created for Lonnie Gordon, Hazell Dean and Princess respectively are elevated not only to new life and shining brilliance but also give a new character that allows these tracks and the Divas to be immortalized into the next century.
Although young, these Divas live up to their well-earned title!
Highlights include: "Gloria," "It's Raining Men," "What A Feeling" and "You'll Never Stop Me Loving You."
