Like Rainbows.......2005-12-07

This album contains some very pleasing music. There's a selection of famous Christmas carols, the majority of which are played as instrumentals, with Liona Boyd on classical guitar, Georges Zamfir on pan flute, and a fine team of other musicians, including Toronto's Children's Chorus and the Orpheus Choir.

Five of the selections include lyrics. The first is the title song, "Christmas Dreams," which begins "Christmas dreams are like rainbows." The others are "Song of Peace," "Silent Night," "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," and "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear."

It's a good choice for the Holiday season, maybe even more so on the evening of, say, December 6 (Saint Nicholas' Day) or December 24 (Christmas Eve, of course).

If you are a Pagan, the Holiday season is a great time to invite one's Christian friends over to celebrate Yule, sing "O Tannenbaum," and put presents under the tree. If you want to go, um, whole hog, you can even perform the sonargoltr (sacrificing the Yule pig) for the feast. But don't do that in front of the guests! Instead, get this fine album and use it to promote togetherness.

A fine Christmas CD for your collection........2000-05-22

Guess what my wife gave me last Christmas? It was "Christmas Dreams" by Liona Boyd.We played "Christmas Dreams" over, over, and over.... Georges Zamfir plays pan flutes to provide a lovely blend with Liona's beautiful classical guitar playing of Christmas season tunes. Other guest appearances are by Roger Whittaker, The Toronto Children's Chorus, and The Orphius Choir. I enjoy all 14 tracks and highly recommend this CD for this Blessed Christmas Season.

Some New Modern Music From the Ancient Rome.......2006-04-16

This is CD-hypothesis. You would hear the modern "newly imagined" music written mainly by Walter Maioli for Ancient Roman instruments. You would hear the sounds of the antique music, not the music from the Roman sources itself. And the music performed by Syanaulia on this CD is very lively, interesting, theatrical, visible, so you would start to believe that this music is really authentic. It would help you to understand the spirit of the Pax Romana (Peaceful Universe of the Roman Empire). Beautiful booklet with the colour illustrations is included with this CD. So as a modern art form this record is very impressive. Well, it is a kind of fantasy music, but it gives you 3D vision of Roman Empire. Second CD by Synaulia with the music for strings is less interesting - this record sounds more fresh and emotional.
But it wouldn`t satisfy your hunger for the real music of the Antiquity. I highly recommend you CDs by ENSEMBLE DE ORGANOGRAPHIA "Music of the Ancient Greeks", "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks"!!!

Also try other CD with modern "newly imagined" music in Ancient Greek style -"Melpomen" by Conrad Steinmann and Schola Cantorum Basilensis.
Try also European CDs with the music from the Greek and Roman sources (I think that Ensemble De Organographia - the best performers of this music, but to compare different approaches to Antique music is also very interesting):
Ensemble Kerylos and Annie Belis "Ancient Greek Music" (label K 617);
Musica Romana "Mesomedes" (maxi-single with the music by Mesomedes of Crete) and "Symphonia Panica" (label Emmuty Records; these CDs available only directly from this label).

AWESOME!!! - The best representation I have ever heard!.......2005-08-20

Cranked all the way up, Synaulia has made writing my history research papers (all about ROMA) for school a new experience. After listening to many things - even, shamefully, watching Gladiator to create a stimulating mind set for my papers (as I CANNOT work in silence) - I thought I would never find anything that could come close to Synaulia's two albums.

If anyone is interested in the cultural aspects of Ancient Rome, I would, WITHOUT HESITATION, recommend you buy both the Strings and Wind collections by Synaulia-you will not be disappointed.

Music was real important in te past. It is part of there religion and way of life.
the Synaulia; music from ancient roma cd, is a great help to historian and people how want to understand a little more the life in the roman times.

Ancient Rome Comes Alive.......2005-06-02

This CD is a wonderful collection of music for wind instruments from ancient Rome's imperial period played on accurate replicas of various Roman instruments. This is a great buy for anyone interested in ancient music or the study of ancient Rome.

There are unfortunately few direct sources on the composition of Roman music. Most of the work in this CD is a recreation of what the music would have sounded like based on the range of the instruments, various classical sources, and anthropological studies of present Mediterranean cultures. I strongly disagree with a previous reviewer's giving of a low rating on the basis that the music is not the direct product of Roman sheet music. Although there may be certain inaccuracies in the recomposition of such music, the number of different scholars who participated in producing this work from various disciplines probably makes such inaccuracies rather slim. Furthermore, since there is no direct source for such music nor is it likely that we will ever uncover any, it's better to have this than nothing at all. The music is primarily brass and percussion but it also has string accompaniments for certain pieces. The music is charming and makes one feel as if they are reclining on their sofas, eating dates, and drinking wine in praise of Baccus. The package makes this CD worth every penny as it has a very detailed synopsis of all the instruments, the works themselves, and the work that was involved in this music: the pamphlet is also filled with photographs and drawings of the instruments as well as various Roman frescoes from Pompey depicting Roman social life and the instruments in question.

This is a great contribution to the study of antiquity and a valuable tool for teachers of ancient music, antiquity, or anthropology. This also a great buy for anyone who has broad interests in music and its development. For what you get with this CD it's a steal.

Rome is alive! But did it ever die?.......2005-04-29

Synaulia's CD "Music of Ancient Rome: Volume I" is quite a good reproduction of what Roman music may have been like. Being a student of Latin for 4 years, I was interested when I stumbled across this CD. I bookmarked it and to my suprise and delight it was given to me as a Christmas present. The plastic holder that the CD rests in is very durable and the booklet had many interesting facts, some of which I didn't even know. While the songs may be a bit weird, they're quite good, and some of the songs remind me of some Celtic tunes. The opening track "Pavor" which in Latin translates into the word "panic" or "terror" (I think it would have been more appropriate to have used the Adverb "Pavide", "in panic" but that's just me) is probably my favourite of the tracks. This song is basically of the god Pan inciting panic among people who disturbed the peace of his forest. While this music isn't an exact reproduction of what may have been listened to by the Romans, it brings these tunes from folk sources, poetic rhythm, and others. This is a fantastic CD and I recommend it for people who have historic interests in the Ancient World and don't mind listening to something a little different.

Juilliard-trained Viviana Guzman, who plays over fifty varieties of flute, including glass, bass, gold, nose, Lapp, and Native American flutes on this album, is joined by her talented ensemble to present haunting, otherworldly music, based on folk melodies. Showing the "diversity, ritual, and connectedness" among peoples, the tracks include pieces of Andean, Celtic, Mexican, Afro-Cuban, Spanish, Native American, and Australian origin.

From "Seventh Veil," a Middle Eastern melody with insistent drumbeat, conjuring visions of Salome and belly dancers, to "Forest Voices," which calls to mind the sounds of birds and animals in the Australian outback and features an instrument called the bull roar, Guzmann and her ensemble reinvigorate aboriginal music, giving it a fresh sound and interpretation. "Painted Cave," inspired by a mysterious place in the Santa Barbara mountains still containing the spirit of the Native Americans who left their marks there, features Guzman on the Native American flute, accompanied by bass drum, clay drum, didgeridoo, and shakers. Her powerfully rendered "Amazing Grace" on the bass flute, closes this remarkable collection of Guzman's arrangements.

Most of these tracks are quietly played in minor keys and include a stirring beat, with the single-toned didgeridoo playing subtly in the background. Though the inspiration for these songs is simple, the musicianship Guzman and her group brings to their arrangements is amazing. John Villa, the expert on didgeridoo, has worked with aboriginal elders in Australia and has made his own instrument. Richard Patterson, who plays guitar on two tracks has studied in Spain with Andres Segovia. Jason Fann, who studied drumming in Ghana, and Peter Maund, an expert on ethnomusicology play aboriginal instruments here ranging from dumbek to riq, djembe, berimbau, and jun-jun. Guzman herself has advanced degrees and has studied with Jean-Pierre Rampal and James Galway.

The stunning cover art, which is also sold as a poster, suggests the back-to-basics approach of this group in getting at the essence of their music, paying homage to traditions of the past while thrilling the souls of performers and listeners alike. Mary Whipple

without breaking them so that melody could be enjoyed now in Viviana's soulful rendition.
This is a great earth trip that will always be a fresh experience every time it is listened to. So find a nice quiet
place to hear it, dream it, and keep it on your itinerary

When Viviana performs you can feel a breath of fresh air reaching her audience.Listening to her rendition of "Lagrimas de Mariposa"(Tears of the Butterfly) ,played with the glass flute,or to "Ojos Azules"(Blue Eyes) played with the gold flute,has transported my spirit from the mountains of the Andes to the cliffs of Big Sur and beyond.

I collect alot of flute albums but this one is very special and unique. As I listened to each track, I went to another place in time and another country or culture. There are many different types of flutes and drums played on this album, and the didgeridoo resonated throughout in deep tones.

The flute playing was seemed to come from the heart of the flutist in whichever flute she played and the drums were invigorating and musical.

I liked all the tracks but my favorites were the Seventh Veil (Moroccan influence), Quetalcoatl (Aztec influence), and the Painted Cave (American Indian influence).

This is a unique, if not always successful, recording. Draghici is a master of his instrument, and only a few bars are needed to put away your preconceived notions of "Zamfir Plays Bacharach" and other late-night TV travesties. He comes from a family full of legendary musicians and he does them proud with traditional and original songs that have deep roots in his family's Romanian Gypsy and Jewish heritage. The production is enhanced by the participation of Omar Faruk Tekbilek on baglamas (Turkish lute) and zurna (double reed). Songs like "Beyond the Black Sea," with a trio of Draghici, Faruk, and Randy Crofton on percussion, are among the best works on the album. Others pieces, however, use various instrumental additions centered on creating "accessibility." Their straight-time signatures and simple melodies just add bulk instead of flavor. --Louis Gibson

This wasn't what I was seeking. It's nice, but for me it's too westernized. Authentic Balkan music loses a lot of its verve when softened by western european instruments. The album Folksongs of Rumania did suit me though. If you want the haunting Balkan sound "Folksongs..." will fill the bill.

I first saw Damian Draghici on a PBS special from Bucharest. I must admit, I had never heard a panflutist before and had expected to be changing the channel a few short moments into the broadcast. I couldnt have been more wrong. I saw and heard a performance which was not only moving and passionate, but simply amazing. I was compelled to purchase any CD I could find by The Virtuoso. This CD, while being the only one I can find currently, is just as moving and compelling as his PBS performance. I recommend it highly.

I love this album. This is the best pan flute cd that I have ever heard. I hope that there is more on the way. Draghici is defenitely what i would call a "master of the pan flute". I am blown away by his passion in his playing. I heard Draghici's interview on NPR and I was so impressed with his story that I felt that I had to write my own review. Draghici is on his way to being a star and I am looking forward to hearing what he will have for his audience in the future. I am telling all of you out there who love pan flute or are just looking for a great new sound, go buy this cd. You will not regret it.
