This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
spiritual americana.......2007-01-06
I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!
Rich Heritage.......2006-10-11
Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.
Superb .......2006-08-07
This collection of American Christian music is not only an enthralling musical experience but a spiritually uplifting one as well. Anonymous Four have transferred their luminous vocal quality to a new space with perfect success.
Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07
My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.
These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.
Mana from Heaven.......2006-05-08
I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

The 1970s were fruitful times for single-name instrumental artists. Expressing a Magellan-like inquisitiveness in their mostly electronic works, composers such as Vangelis, Kitaro, and Eloy attracted followings by leading torch-lit expeditions into fresh-sounding audio terrain while searching for more sublime emotional experiences. Deuter emerged during that period, though his subsequent involvement with Eastern philosophies reshaped his approach, leading him to construct works on a more internal, less cinematic scale. That style remains in place here in Deuter's first recording for the new millennium, and the result is a gentle charmer that may not dazzle you at first but will over time reveal simple pleasures and subtle satisfactions that make it worthwhile listening. Flutes and piano, plus occasional synths, strings and harp, are the dominant sounds at work here, and Deuter combines them in ways that capture a world as peaceful and sun-warmed as the golden detail from Van Gogh's Olive Trees used as the cover image for Sun Spirit. Overall, the music is probably too dainty for some tastes, but minor gems such as the softly pulsing "Sunlight Dancing" and the delightful title track (which recalls the David Lanz/Paul Speer hit "Behind the Waterfall") should appeal to anyone. Uplifting, yet not excessively cheerful. --Terry Wood
Album Description
Internationally acclaimed musician and composer Deuter has become known as a pioneer by creating music that is both meditative and inspiring. This album celebrates the essence of the sun with captivating melodies brought to life with spirited flute, synthesizer, and drum. Listen to Sun Spirit and be illuminated.

JOY Overdose.......2003-07-05
I bought this CD on a whim after hearing it mentioned in a magazine article - forgot which - as a good CD for a pleasant ambience.
'Pleasant?' Talk about understatement.
You will want to tell others about it as soon as you hear the first four or five tracks. But then when you get to track 8, there will be a door opening inside you that is marked "To Heaven". Track 9, the last track, is the best on the CD, in my opinion, and the one that removes the usefulness of the English vocabulary to try to describe it. It's the most intoxicatingly ecstasy-promoting music I've heard.
There is an NLP (neurolinguistic progrmaming) technique that involves you thinking and feeling about a highly positive emotionally charged past event, and then you create a physical anchor such as applying pressure to a finger while thinking about it. (It's good for job interviews or other anxiety producing times.) Track nine is my background music when I go through the process of creating an anchor, and it works so well!
Pure Joy!!.......2001-09-04
I have been inspired by Deuter's music ever since I heard his album Ecstacy in the early 80's. All of his music puts me in touch with my spirit. And this one is no exception. Once again Deuter enfolds with his enchanting embrace. All nine selections are infused with the feeling tones of joy and upliftment. If this music was a wine I would have to say it is champagne -- pure sparkling golden effervescent bubbly.
Each of the nine vignettes makes me feel as if my spirit has taken a holiday to a lush and idyllic tropical island where the sun shines all day long while little billowing white clouds float along in the sky. Then at night I sense the full moon casting is silvery rays off of the calm ocean waves, shimmering and iridescent.
Apres La Pluie, track 4, is one of my favorites. Opening with the beat of tabla drums, as if waves are rhythmically lapping the shore, it sets the stage for the entrance of Deuter's recorder flutes. At first, one magical songbird starts singing while the sun's rays poke over the horizon at dawn. In a little while more birds join in with their songs. Then, as if a warm gentle breeze is rising up off of the ocean, the synthesized strings add their lush texture.
Whether you want to relax or daydream or take an inner journey, I can only give this work my highest recommendation. You won't regret it.

Canticle of the Sun: Excerpts From Published Reviews.......2000-11-26
"The latest recording of (Beach's) work, 'Canticle of the Sun,' has just been issued by Albany Records and features the Capitol Hill Choral Society and a fine group of Washington (DC) soloists, directed by Betty Buchanan... The performances are skilled and idiomatic throughout." The Washington Post
"This sacred music collection represents an important contribution to the recorded literature of American composers... In this performance the text is presented clearly, and fine attention is given to the dynamic extremes of the (Canticle of the Sun). Unison passages highlight the choral ensemble's good blend... A particular strength of this recording is the variety of the selections it contains. Included are large accompanied choral works, unaccompanied selections, two solo songs, and (a) composition for violin and piano." The Choral Journal of the American Choral Directors Association
The singers perform Canticle of the Sun "with clean tone and excellent diction. The orchestra...plays with cohesion and with sensitivity to the projection of the chorus...which has just the right choral sound for this repertory. The work contains many tricky chromatic shifts,...every one of them was flawlessly intoned." Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2005-05-25
"Touch the Sun" is the third installment of pianist Eric McCarl's "Trilogy of Light," a collection of original pieces written over the course of the past twenty years. The fifteen piano solos range from quiet and pensive to upbeat and jazzy, with the majority being more on the reflective side. Overall, this CD has a warmer, more contented mood than the two previous releases, although it certainly isn't breezy. The music has enough structure to hold it together, and enough improvisation to make it feel spontaneous and in the moment. McCarl's playing style is always expressive and full of color, and the sound of his piano is beautiful.
The CD opens with "Journey's End," a piece that has a sense of moving forward and also of looking inward. Perhaps triumph without victory as yet? The title track is a bit more ambient and floating, with lots of open space between the musical phrases. "Alone Place" is also very open and minimal, with the damper pedal creating an echo effect that is both lonely and chilling - this is definitely one of the darker tracks. "Soft Light" is very calming, peaceful, and gentle. Most of the notes are in the upper and middle registers on the piano, but McCarl brings in some deep bass notes here and there that give the piece a different dimension. I really like it! "Walk On Water" is another favorite. The first part is structured and melodic, and then segues into a more improvised section that seems both reverent and questioning. The simple rhythm is quietly intense, creating a sense of peace and calm. Very effective! My favorite piece is "Sun Goes Down," which begins with a bluesy feeling and a slinky rhythm that is infectious. The piece is very free, but weighted by some deep bass accents. Some sections sound improvised, and the second half of the piece is more rubato with the original rhythm weaving in and out. My other favorite is "Blue Blue City," which is rhythmic, jazzy, and very, very cool ( a double-entendre where both meanings are accurate!). The closing track, "Window SIll," returns to a reflective mood with lots of open spaces between the musical thoughts, and passages that are full of passion - a serene way to end this impressive album and the Trilogy itself.
Having spent so much of his adult life working on the music for this project, it will be interesting to see where Eric McCarl goes next, musically. In the meantime, treat yourself to "Touch the Sun," "Atlantis Lost," and "Seeking the Light," aka "The Trilogy of Light." This is music that is meant to be listened to, not relegated to the background. Find a comfy spot, close your eyes, and let the music take you away! Recommended!

Not to be missed!!!.......2007-04-30
This CD is simply excellent! Anybody who ever cared for TV soundtracks should give it a chance. The only better thing is Barry Gray's music for "UFO" TV series, which has been promised from Silva Screen (and has been published by "Fanderson" and since sould out). So, whatever somebody think of the series, this music will not fail to delight. Impressive and nostalgic, mysterious and enthralling, this music really deserves to be heard by everybody.
Great year one compilation.......2007-01-09
This remastered version of Space:1999 year one or series one sounds excellent. It is very clear and you can better appreciate Barry Gray wonderful job.
If you are Space:1999 fan, it is a must have.
An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27
Talk about bringing back memories. The music is crisp-clear & updated. For the 1999 fans-this is a must have.
Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01
Space:1999 - the series - may be one of the most controversial SF shows ever. People either love it, or they hate it... there seems to be little middle ground. As a kid I was thrilled with the series, although even then I could see the weaknesses in science, story, and characterization. But from a purely visual and aural standpoint, the first series rarely disappointed.
Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.
Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.
However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.
Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09
I give this soundtrack 5 stars only because the soundtrack is awesome, but if you want a more complete compilation, you need to find the Fanderson version.
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

nu jazz, broken beat, and melodic ventures - from japan!.......2002-09-19
absolute brilliant release from compost records (japan). for years they have been associated with the creative forces and likes of jazzanova, fauna flash, and the likes of other compost recording artists. their remixes for various hard-to-find compilations only give you the hint of their abilities and talents. spirit of the sun + 1 = is worth every penny. absolute perfection in nu jazz and broken beat - with the addition of vocalists vanessa freeman, victor davies, and bebel gilberto on the japanese release only. this album will be spoken about years from now as a testament to the evolution of nu jazz and dance floor culture.
buy this album. impossible to classify = but undoubtedly a stellar release from the production duo of the far east.
similar in nature to jazzanova's new release in-between. BUY NOW!

Good Electronic nu-jazz from the Masters.......2004-10-02
Kyoto Jazz Massive are one of my favorite artists. Hailing from Japan, these DJ's and musicians are some of the finest and have worked with a wide array of artists, from break-beat to bossa to soul to new jazz. They are Shuya Okino & Yoshihiro Okino and this particular release featured some terrific guest performers, one of which being Hajime Yoshizawa who had a heavy, heavy, heavy influence on keyboards and production. Picked this up in 2002 before the new Glucklich had come out and LOVED it.
Check the introductory track "The Dawn Introduction", which has the soulful Vanessa Freeman on vocals. Great track, smooth and then that's Hajime Yoshizawa's magic on the keyboards (remember "I Am With You" feat. Nina Miranda?)! "Brightness of These Days" is an up-beat cut with great programming and vocals. Mind Expansions was one of the cool cuts that was released as a pre-release EP and it features Maiya James, while "Deep in Your Mind" has the popular Victor Davies on vocals, and I really dig that track. It has that classic KJM percussion. Then there's "Shine", which features Christian Franck (Smoke City, Da Lata, Batu, etc.) & Guida De Palma - both with a release titled "Jazzinho" from this year. But this isn't totally new stuff... "Eclipse" is here as is "Substream". But oddly... Calmaria doesn't feature.
I really dig this release and highly recommend it. Kyoto Jazz Massive are on the Compost label (Jazzanova, Rainer Truby, Future Sound of Jazz, Beanfield, Faze Action, etc.) and they fit in PERFECTLY to their multi-national sound and nu-music experience. If you were a fan of "A Calmaria" and "Crossbreed" among others, you'll want to get your hands on this. Likewise just know that Kyoto Jazz massive have loads of other tracks out there but some are VERY pricey imports... like their "Crossbreed" series. But both the ones that I own I enjoy. And... KJM did an ep with Bebel Gilberto titled "The View From Her Room" that has a great jazzy feel with KJM's classic beats. Also check some of their remixes - they've done eveyrone from Ananda Project to Ingocnito to Fauna Flash to Jazzanova to Nicola Conte etc. etc. Also be sure to check out the Bossa Tres... Jazz series; specifically, "Step Into the Gallery"/Bossa Mundo from 2002 and "Bossa Tres... Jazz" from 1999.
Beautiful..........2003-07-07
My love of jazz...
My love tight beats...
My love of picking up a CD without hearing much from them and LIKING IT. Money not waisted here. I had a 45sec preview of "the brightness of these days" from yet, another mixtape. Almost 5months later I come across this name in the record store, remembering the mixtape cut....I purchased it without a second thought. Don't you love it when a whim turns out well?
It's nothing really new here to those who've been around this genre, for me and those who vibe to acid jazz, dance soul ...whatever name you choose, make this CD fit in your collection. Kyoto gives you tight beats over the nicest jazz tunes, riffs and superb production. Uptempo dance gems to get you moving and vocals for the ear to snack on...

Excellent piece of future grooves from KJM.......2002-10-31
I actually have the Japanese version of this CD but with the exception of the last track which includes Bebel Gilberto it is the same. You can get the Bebel track on a separate EP if you purchase the non-Japanese release. Perhaps the Victor Davies track is a bit 80's moonlighting sounding but that is my only criticism.
What a great bit of future Jazz dance music. From the introduction all the way through to the finale (Japanese version)with Bebel's sultry vocals I can't find much fault with this.
It would be just as easy to lie back and enjoy this masterpiece. Not quite on a chillout tip but just enough to evoke memories of nice warm and faraway places. The Jazzy fender rhodes certainly helps with the overall jazzy feeling. Also featured on the CD are Victor Davies, Chris Franck & Guida De Palma, Vanessa Freeman, Maiya James and the aforementioned Bebel Gilberto.
I can't recommend this highly enough as it is really making me toe tap and nod my head at my desk. What a great year it has been for music and this is definitely up there with the best of them.
