Product Description
Bianca and Sierra Casady return with a new CocoRosie album filled with charm and otherworldly elegance and a street-performers view of the world! Noah's Ark is a beautiful tapestry that unravels along different threads. Like the sound of a child's bedroom come to life, the creaking of music boxes, tinkling of toy pianos and quirky doll squeaks dot a gorgeous musical backdrop for the girls' virtuoso vocals to fly, sometimes like an opera singer, sometimes like a world-weary street urchin. Includes tremendous, show-stopping guest performances by two of the finest new names in music, Antony (Antony & The Johnsons) and Devendra Banhart. Australian version includes the bonus track 'Oh Sailor'. 13 tracks in total. Rogue. 2005.

A unicorn, a rainbow spitting zebra and what looks to be a horse sprouting a third eye are engaged in group sex on the illustrated cover of CocoRosie's second album. If that leads you to expect something playful and magical but also starkly screwed-up from the recording inside, you are on the right path. With assistance from Antony and Devendra, Ark is easily one of the most rewarding releases of 2005. The core of the music is made by singers/multi-instrumentalists Sierra and Bianca Cassidy, formerly estranged sisters who bonded over music and made their magical debut in a Paris flat. Their music has a lunatic music box feel that ought to appeal to fans of Bjork and Joanna Newsom, while the lyrics mine transgressive territory more often found in a book by JT LeRoy than a pop song. The true stars of the album are the singers' lovely, ethereal voices, which refract a '30s jazz-blues idiom through a strangely deadened, forever-sad delivery. It's the vocal equivalent of the toymaker's creations from Blade Runner and it is simply beautiful! -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Since the mysterious and beautiful "La Maison de Mon Reve" surfaced in early 2004, CocoRosie have spent months traveling the world with the likes of Bright Eyes, TV On The Radio, Antony And The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, and Blonde Redhead. Along the way, "Noah's Ark" took shape, where heart-offerings of friends, family, loved ones and lost ones surface gracefully, contributing depth to the narrative journey. "Noah's Ark" is the result of a rootless reality, a drifting consciousness across state lines, date lines, time lines...connected to the past, vague about the future. But the heart of these songs is always issued from a tender present.

4 out of 5 stars Some rough spots, but a great album overall.......2007-01-04

Despite the couple of songs I don't like (yet?), this disc has several outstanding songs, especially beautiful boys and noah's ark, but also KHole, and bear hides and buffalos. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars this band is much better live!.......2006-10-13

Let me start by saying, i respect these girls immensly. Cocorosie are in a class all their own, they are 100% experiemental. But sometimes as a musician, that either pays off or not so much. In this case, not so much. Although some of the songs are pretty, most of it just sounds like a bad acid trip at a circus. Which makes them really fun to see live. Throughout the whole concert i was mezmerised by their theatrics, their voices, and their stage prescence. Will i put their cd in my player and listen to it alone? No, not in less i want the scary clowns to come out and attack me. Yikes.

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2006-07-27

This is a terrible album. Cocorosie is one of those bands that are fun to throw in with a bunch of other bands in a music related conversation to make your taste and knowledge of hip and independent music sound that much bigger than it really is. The cover artwork is pretty funny and cocorosie is a cool name, the only problem is that they make music that sounds like it does and they charge people money to listen to it.

1 out of 5 stars No.No.No.no...no...no...no...no.......2006-05-08

A sorry excuse for an album. This is not 'different' & wonderful; this is simply annoying noise.

2 out of 5 stars just too weird really.......2006-04-21

There's weird but listenable (see: Bjork).

Then there is acquired taste (see: Stina Nordenstam).

And then there is quirky but endearing (see: Joanna Newsom).

And after all that we hit Coco Rosie who are weird, quirky and an acquired taste but, if we are being brutally honest, there is not enough of the listenable and endearing about their music to make you tolerate the oddities.

For some this will be a delight and they will rave about the album till the cows come home. But most should be warned, this is eclectic in the extreme and simply does not have enough good tunes to make it a worthwhile listen.

A shame, really.

5 out of 5 stars Must for your collection ~ and your childrens collection.......2003-09-23

What a wonderful introduction to classical music for your children this CD is. My children love it and I do too. We use it as bedtime music now (ages 4 & 7). However, if your children really tune in to the music it can be a bit unnerving in parts so we used to only listen to it at home or in the car......they had to gain a few years to become comfortable with it in the darkness of their rooms at night. Buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Teddy Bears a Must-Listen!.......2000-09-06

This is the first CD by the New Columbian Brass Band I have ever purchased, and I can't wait to own them all. This virtuoso group is a joy to listen to. Owning this CD is a must for lovers of brass band/turn-of-the-century music. It's a delight!

5 out of 5 stars The cat's meow!.......2000-05-16

Dorian Recordings should be given some kind of award for the most imaginative releases of not only great historical but great musical value. (DOR-93201) features the New Columbian Brass Band under George Foreman playing 15 pieces written from 1900 to 1921 and inspired by animals.

So we have "The Teddy Bears Picnic," "A Morning in Noah's Ark," "The Two Little Bullfinches," "Turkey in the Straw," and even "Tiger Rag." The Noah's Ark number is replete with animal sounds by a guest expert and links up with an earlier Dorian release called "A Trip to Coney Island: Descriptive Overtures from America's Golden Age" (DOR-80153), which introduced me to a form of musical tone poem very popular around the turn of the century.

This is one of those rare recordings that will appeal to all age levels; and scholars will be delighted to note that "Turkey in the Straw" is actually a Humoresque for Clarinet. Also anyone who has ever seen barnyard chickens in any old Warner Brothers cartoon will have already heard "Chicken Reel." A very definite 5 star Grabbit.

1 out of 5 stars Robotic and Science Fiction Movie Soundtrack.......2005-11-05

This cd contained some bad music overall but some of the really good ones were excellent. So I guess I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy this CD.

1 out of 5 stars IT STINKS.......2004-10-13

Disco sci-fi?? They got to be kidding. Stay away from this mess. The 1 star rating is false. It's the only way I could get this thru. It's really a big ZERO.

4 out of 5 stars Cool variation of the themes........1999-07-13

These are some of the best science fiction movie themes thrown onto one CD. The music is changed into a more jazzy, futuristic tone. Some of the songs suck, but it is an overall good CD.

2 out of 5 stars Too synthetic!.......1999-04-14

This is actually a re-release of a CD that originally offered several more tracks, including "The Twilight Zone" and a jazzy variation on "2001."

This version offers no substitutes for the missing tracks, and the new arrangements of the surviving tunes are lifeless interpretations pumped out of a sytnthesized orchestra.

The kiddies might like the upbeat tempos, though.

Caveat emptor!

This work might well have been the first "crossover," long before the term was invented. Seven composers living in America---all but one European emigrés, all but one Jewish---each contributed one movement to a composition for chorus, orchestra, and narrator, based on excerpts from several chapters of Genesis. The project was initiated and commissioned by the group's only American-born member, Nathaniel Shilkret, in response to a poll indicating that there was much public interest in the musical representation of the Bible. The result is a heady mixture of styles, further accentuated by the introduction of yet another participant, Patrick Russ, who was called in to reconstruct the orchestrations of three movements, the original material having been partially lost in a fire. To his great credit, his work melts indistinguishably into the style and quality of the music. The Suite's bookends are by two composers so diametrically opposed musically and personally that finding them collaborating on the same project is quite surprising. They are also the most famous and the only ones untouched by the influence of film music: Schoenberg, whose "Prelude" uses the 12-tone technique to set the mood of the primeval chaos, but ends in clear C major, and Stravinsky, who, determined to preserve the Bible's mystery, depicts the construction and destruction of the Tower of Babel in purely musical, highly contrapuntal terms, culminating in a return to chaos. The other composers, all active in Hollywood and surrounded by jazz and popular music, produce a kaleidoscope of soaring melodies, surging harmonies, and dynamic instrumental contrasts, colors and effects suitable to accompany a Biblical epic on screen. The music provides preludes, interludes, background and support for the narration, which, divided between two male and two female voices, weaves over, under and through it. The speaking, singing, and playing are excellent, but one of the female voices is seriously underbalanced. --Edith Eisler

      Album Description

A MAJOR 20th-CENTURY WORK REDISCOVERED! The Genesis Suite depicts the earliest Bible stories, including the Creation, Adam and Eve, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, narrated by distinguished actors accompanied by full orchestra and chorus. This unique collaboration of seven famous composers, most of them European exiles living in Hollywood during World War II, was performed only once, in 1945, before much of the music was lost in a fire. FULLY RESTORED from recently discovered original manuscripts, the Genesis Suite is now presented in its first modern recording.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

This Hollywood project was the brainchild of Nathaniel Shilkret, a conductor and very minor composer who was a friend of Gershwin and conducted the first recording of An American in Paris. Shilkret got the idea of telling the story of Genesis by assembling a group of famous composers (and himself) to write music accompanying passages from the Bible. He got the cream of the crop: Schoenberg, Tansman, Milhaud, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Stravinsky, and Toch. But most of them didn't provide the cream of their crops, and the experienced movie-music writers turned out things that sound like pretty good movie music, which fits well behind the narration, but doesn't hold the attention by itself. Schoenberg and Stravinsky are the exceptions, and their contributions ("Genesis Prelude" and "Babel," respectively) have had some independent life.

Edward Arnold, who played Nero Wolfe and Daniel Webster among his 150 film roles, does a decent but unremarkable job with the narration; he is recorded so close-up that he is very easy to understand. The orchestra, Hollywood film musicians getting a chance to play "real" music, sounds extremely good, and the small chorus sings its minor parts well. The recording, from 1946, holds up surprisingly well. Overall, this is more a curiosity than a major artistic experience. But if you're interested in hearing it, grab it now. Things like this don't last long in the catalogs, and the old Capitol LP incarnation was selling for $100 and up before this CD came out. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars A must if you are a lover of Schoenberg's music.......2004-12-23

The sound is vintage mono but more than acceptable. The music, contributed by several composers, is a uneven. The concept (a soundtrack to The Book of Genesis) is a corny, BUT if you admire Schoenberg, one of the most revolutionary and truly great composers of ths 20th century, then you have to have this CD, even if the Schoenberg section, the Prelude, only lasts about five minutes. This is the only place you are going to find a recorded version of this obscure work, although Schoenberg's Preslude did receive an opus number. I have heard reports that DG is coming out with a new recording of the suite, but this recording is special because of its historical-document nature. The Prelude is good solid Schoenberg.

5 out of 5 stars Bible Narration Set to Music By Distinguished Composers.......2001-11-27

It is a delight to see a reissue of this unusual piece whose contribution by Schoenberg was described privately by Shilkret, who commissioned the work, as "too futuristic to be appreciated." Hopefully, in the 56 years since this evaluation was made, the future has arrived. The music was so much out of the ordinary that reviews differed widely. Schoenberg's contribution was praised in MUSICAL REVIEWS as creating "an intense emotional response, delineated with brilliant clarity,'' and in the LOS ANGELES TIMES it was described as "starkly simple." Slonimsky, in MUSIC SINCE 1900, expressed a strong preference for "Creation," "one of the engaging sections of the work. . . by Nathaniel Shilkret."
The instrumental track was recorded by Werner Janssen on December 11, 1945. Janssen was one of the leading conductors of his time. He was an academy award nominee for a best musical score and the first native-born New Yorker to conduct the New York Philharmonic.
Edward Arnold recorded an accompanying narration in 1946, and Artist Records issued the combined tracks as album JS10. Due to problems with Artist, the album was to be reissued, and Janssen conceived of having Franklin Roosevelt or Winston Churchill do the narration; both declined. Capitol Records chose a clergyman, Ted Osborne, and, in December 1950, he recorded a new narration. Capitol combined the new narration with the original instrumental track, changed the order of the pieces (Schoenberg's contribution was placed last by Artist and restored to its original number one position by Capitol), and issued the new combination as album P8125, reissued with excellent sound restoration as CD 67729.
All of the composers were the finest of the day. Shilkret, mistakenly described in a review by Leslie Gerber as a "very minor composer," composed hundreds of pieces (over ten thousand if incidental motion picture music and radio arrangements are counted), including "Jeannine, I Dream of Lilac Time," which sold almost two million copies of sheet music, the academy-award-nominated score to the movie "Winterset," and his most popular song, "Lonesome Road," recorded by over a hundred top artists, including Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, Al Hirt, Chet Atkins, Trini Lopez, the Four Seasons, and Paul Robeson. The 1927 song has survived well enough than more than ten CD's have included a "Lonesome Road" track, with more soon to be released.
This album should have appeal to two audiences: first, those interested in a biblical narrative, which is enhanced here by pleasant music, and, second, those interested in hearing the work of top composers of the era performed by a top conductor of the era.

      2 out of 5 stars A curiosity.......2001-11-21

I had heard of the Genesis Suite years ago when first exploring the music of Schoenberg and Stravinsky and heard their contributions. Not ever seeing a copy of the LP and knowing it is quite rare, I snapped up this recording. I can see why it has languished in obscurity since the '40s. The Schoenberg is excellent as is the Stravinsky. A rank below that is the Toch,Tansman and Milhaud. The rest is pretty bottom drawer with the contribution of "Creation" by the "arranger" Shilkret almost intolerable. Get it if you want your curiosity satisfied. Surprisingly good sound with some surface noise.

      5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece from a magic artist that I love.......2006-05-04

This work is simply wonderful. I could find it in the U.S.A. in a web-shop after long and several searchs. I think this is a masterpiece; Stewart Copeland's instrumental style is immediately distinguishable at the first listen of the cd.
It creates a magic atmosphere that rarely it's possible to feel listening music. It's very rare to find this cd, but if you can get it, do not hesitate to buy it: you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars the best ever released from Stewart.......1999-05-02

I was very lucky to find this album in Holland, years ago, and what a great score this is. When it would be possible I would give much more stars. This is a real opera score from Stewart and I think it is the best he ever wrote. The brilliant voice of James Earl Jones together with the emotional score of Stewart is unbelievable thrilling. It puts tears in your eyes every time again. There are 4 tracks on this album and track 1 and 3 have the same score, but 1 is with the words of the movie spoken by James Earl Jones and track 3 is only the music about 30 minutes long. Track 2 and 4 are poems told by James Earl Jones It`s sad that it is no longer available on cd, so it will not be easy for real Copeland fans to get it. But if you find one do not hesitate but buy it immediate.
