The double-disc soundtrack to the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever (available on a single CD) marks both the zenith and the nadir of disco. It was such a popular sensation that it catapulted the music to stratospheric levels of mainstream popularity, and the album was the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time (until The Bodyguard, and then Titanic). But "Disco Fever" became so hot, it could only flame out just as quickly (along with the careers of the Bee Gees). With this record, disco became a phenomenon and a fad. The Bee Gees' contributions are the strongest, especially the once-ubiquitous "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," and they still hold up. Then there's Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven," a trivial piece of pop ephemera that may have set new standards for ephemeral triviality. How often will you listen to this record--and how much will you play when you do? There's no telling--but it remains a classic piece of pop history, and when you're in the mood it's a good thing to have around. --Jim Emerson

Save your money. You are better off purchasing the BEE GEES greatest hits CD. There are too many songs on this CD that the BG's didn't sing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great disco classic.......2007-07-24

This masterpiece has lost none of its appeal after all these years, proving the critics wrong and the BeeGees right. Part of its popularity must be due to the clever mix of fast dance numbers and lovely soaring ballads. The frenetic pace of e.g. Staying Alive and Night Fever is balanced by the serene pace of How Deep Is Your Love.

For fans of the old-style BeeGees ballads, this new direction with the edgy falsetto vocals and the nervous beat came as a shock initially, but those hits like Jive Talkin' and You Should Be Dancing soon enough swept one up in the disco fever. I love Yvonne Elliman's poignant ballad If I Can't Have You, while the tracks by Kool & The Gang, MFSB and KC & The Sunshine Band are great too.

But the real underground classic here is Disco Inferno by Trammps, nine minutes of burbling, bubbling, stomping, storming, gripping funk that is as anthemic as any great rock song by for example Bruce Springsteen. Come to think of it, most of the BeeGees tracks here can also be considered as anthems of the disco generation.

Besides serving as bridges between the classic hits, the filler tracks like A Fifth Of Beethoven and Salsation add authenticity to the overall listening experience and serve to strengthen the ambience. This album and the movie took disco out of the underground and reinvented it as a mainstream phenomenon.

While rock music was going through the convulsions of the punk and new wave revolutions, disco was having the party of the decade. And this album, along with the music of Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Chic, Giorgio Moroder, Boney M, Village People and others, provided the soundtrack to an era.

3 out of 5 stars The music is definitely 5 Star but the rerelease merits a big fat zero!.......2007-07-23

This rerelease has to be the biggest DISAPPOINTMENT of the year!!! Where's the bonus cuts? How about some unreleased demos? How about the limited edition DJ only 12" promotional single versions of "Stayin' Alive" (6:55), "Night Fever" (4:50), "More Than A Woman" (4:43), "If I Can't Have You" (by Yvonne Elliman) (4:00) & "You Should Be Dancin'" (4:47)[RSO catalog # PRO 033]? How about both the live and studio versions of "Jive Taking", each released on various editions of the vinyl soundtrack (studio version on early copies, live on later)? How about the '83 medley (entited "Saturday Night Mix") only released before in Europe [B side of "The Woman in You" UK 12"]? How about the DJ only Ultimix remix of "Staying Alive" or the Hot Tracks remix of "Night Fever", neither ever released commercially? How about the Ben Leibrand remix of Taveres' "More Than A Woman"? How about the songs from the David Shire score that didn't make it on the original album? How about the label doing some research and uncovering these lost gems? How about Rhino blows it AGAIN!!! Sorry, Rhino but YOU HAVE REALLY LOST IT!

4 out of 5 stars Boogie Down.......2007-07-10

With the years of movie musicals arose in recent times around Hollywood and at the movies, the music seems to be just as important as it was years ago. Films like Dreamgirls and the upcoming Hairspray with John Travolta, remind people of just how important the music has to blend into a great film. That also can be said about the classics too in Travolta's dyas back in the 1970's. With Grease and Saturday Night Fever, he was everywhere, and just a darling with the music. However, the musical icons of last year, The Bee Gees have often been overlooked in recent years, in favor of wannabe acts that're more about gloss like Kelly Clarkson, and the irritating Paris Hilton who is just a singer who acts like a jerk. But, their music has received a big overhaul, and one of most popular records has too.

The 2007 re-release of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, was in regards to last years overhaul and move of The Bee Gees catalog from Universal and MCA, to Warner Brothers in the U.S. The albums sound great, and the music from the popular 70's film still are just as exciting to listen too, as they were developed 30 years ago. The songs on the soundtrack take you back to a time when everybody went to discos as an escape from everyday life, and the music was full of rhythm and life. The songs here including all of the Bee Gees classics like Night Fever, the soulful How Deep Is Your Love, and the cult favorite Stayin' Alive. Although the soundtrack is mainly about The Bee Gees, there are other great songs here as well including The Tramps Disco Inferno, and Yvonne Elliman's one hit wonder track If I Can't Have You. Although there aren't any new tracks that were added like the original was made, the songs here really sound better than ever, and still are great to whole new dancers everywhere.

All in all, the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever is a great buy for anyone who is into classic movie soundtracks. I absolutely love the songs here, and if you're a fan of John Travolta, or love The Bee Gees, than I definitely recommend this album a whole lot. It still makes you want to feel like you're Stayin' Alive no matter what!

5 out of 5 stars There is dancin' out there........2006-09-05

This is undoubtably one of the best soundtracks ever released. Ten of the 17 songs here were hits, including seven #1 hits. Of course, only about half the music here was specifically recorded for the movie. Specifically, the first four Bee Gees songs, the Yvonne Elliman song, the Tavares song and the instrumental score by David Shire were especially recorded for the film. The rest of the songs are a year or two older, and some of them had already been hits long before the movie came out. Of course, none of that detracts from the quality of the album. It's really fun to listen to, unless you're one of those people who insist that "disco sucks".

The trend of making stage musicals out of dance movies from the late 1970s and early 1980s continues with Saturday Night Fever, which debuted with this London cast in 1998 and moved to Broadway in the fall of 1999. Like Footloose, SNF has the task of taking a score that was essentially background music and transforming it into songs performed by onstage characters. For example, "How Deep Is Your Love" becomes a romantic duet, and "If I Can't Have You" becomes Stephanie's (Tara Wilkinson) vow that she'll only dance with Tony (Adam Garcia). In addition to most of the familiar songs from the movie soundtrack, the cast recording adds some other Bee Gees hits ("What Kind of Fool," "Tragedy," "Immortality"). It's all a pleasant listen and a useful souvenir of the show, but those who just want to listen to the music might do just as well to stick with the original soundtrack--unless you're allergic to falsetto. --David Horiuchi

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Bee Gees.......2006-04-28

Yes that's right! How can you possibly better the 2nd biggest group since the Beatles? The answer - you can't. There are no interesting arrangements here, just a load of pointless revamps, which change hardly anything except the voices. Which makes you wonder why the even bothered recording this CD in the first place!

5 out of 5 stars Catch the Fever!.......2005-09-15

Unfortunately, because the critics trashed the Broadway run of Saturday Night Fever, a Broadway recording was never made. Therefore we must settle on the London cast recording. However, I do not consider this purchase settling because it's just FANTASTIC. The voices are great. The music is great, and fun. The recording is super clear and you can hear the detail of every musical instrument used. My only complaint with the CD is most songs just fade out instead of ending as they did in the show. For some reason they didn't want to put the music written for the ending in the CD. My only guess was so because they wanted to leave the integrity of the songs intact and play what people know. If you like the sound of 3 men singing like women, this CD is not for you either. Lastly, if you know the show you will notice the tracks are out of order, in which they appeared in the show. This CD is great to listen to in the car. You find yourself singing along to familiar tracks. Wait till you hear track 6; Who's Sorry Now?, It's just incredible! I love this CD and highly recommend it to any Bee Gees fan and/or fan of the show and/or movie. Catch the Fever today before they are all sold out.

1 out of 5 stars SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER?.......2002-10-10

        Hardly...
If you like broadyway go see the show but skip the recording...this ones not the inspiration that SNF was.
Bad vocals and a bland re-recording of orignals.
the only hope here stems from 'Immortality' a great Gibb song but wait for a better recording of it on some best of broadway cd.

5 out of 5 stars Love This CD!.......2001-12-20

Being a huge fan of the movie, was very interested to see how the musical sounded. Bought this CD after finding out Adam Garcia was Tony Manero. I was blown away! Although different from the original Bee Gees recordings, the versions are fun, funky, have a good beat and are easy to dance to. My personal favorite is "Night Fever" followed closely by the duet "How Deep Is Your Love." A must for any Adam Garcia fan and a must for any Bee Gees/disco fan. You will truly enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Saturday Night Fiasco.......2001-12-02

If, and that's a HUGE if, you're a Bee Gees fan, or a Donna Summer fan, then perhaps you would like Saturday Night Fever: The Musical. However, if you are a theatre afficionado who religiously listens to Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim, then back away from this atrocity. Having seen the show live, I must admit the choreography was incredible, however that was the only redeeming factor I picked out in it. The London recording is also a bit different than the Broadway/Tour run. While the vocal talents they chose for it are all right, it appears that they were hoping to ride on the pretty faces and familiar tunes for a Broadway hit. The ennunciation is also incredibly off, making many words hard to understand. The "plot" was incredibly weak, especially considering the writers had a movie to refer to, and at times I was wondering what purpose certain songs served in the plot. The incidents that occur (ie: Tony's brother leaving the ministry, Annette's affection for Tony) are never strongly connected, making for 5 or 6 subplots but never one strong central premise. I wouldn't reccomend this to a huge Broadway fan, given the hype that this has received, they might be scared that it set a precedent.

        5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
        beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
        songs! Come on, Paul!

        3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

5 out of 5 stars For Fans of the Film, or Sakamoto, a Worthwhile Purchase.......2006-11-13

As with most soundtrack albums, you'll buy it because you really liked the film and want an aural souvenir of it. "The Sheltering Sky" certainly works in that regard. It even has the Lionel Hampton number used over the opening credits. Unfortunately, the tracks are not sequential, which lessens the souvenir value a bit, but it's still a good buy for lovers of the film or for fans of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2005-11-14

This is a timeless, haunting soundtrack. One of Sakamoto's best, and thanks to a supporting cast of great music - this is truly a soundscape best heard in totality. Any fans of Sakamoto's work or even those who love movie soundtracks - you absolutely have to get this. Penetrating and atmospheric.

        5 out of 5 stars Stunning Sky.......2004-10-25

The Sheltering Sky is one of my favorite scores. The film itself is flawed but fascinating, and its score is one of its highlights. The Sheltering Sky Theme is so moving and haunting that it ranks up there with "Once Upon A Time In America" and "The Mission" as a brilliant theme music.

This soundtrack is hard to find but worth seeking if you love score music.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only!.......2000-01-05

this Bertolucci movie was really beautiful and so is the soundtrack. It is simply brilliant & in my opinion Sakamoto's very best! A mixture of ancient sounds, slow strings, islamic chants and heartbreaking melodies, just BEAUTIFUL !

Buy it, it's a must! Rik

          Album Description

His name and face might not grace many album covers, but Cornell Dupree's guitar playing has touched millions of people. The funky two-note string pop at the beginning of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," the serene lead and refrain on King Curtis' "Soul Serenade," even the rhythmic underpinnings on Mariah Carey's Emotions album -- they're all the work of Dupree. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. In a remarkable career now entering its fifth decade, Dupree has played on an estimated 2,000-plus albums, and worked with a staggering list of artists that includes James Brown, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Elvin Jones, B.B. King, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Simon and Barbra Streisand. Also known by guitar fans around the world for his work with the instrumental funk combos Stuff and the Gadd Gang - his unique, funky fat-back rhythm and blues meets jazz style is in a class of its own. This CD release of the rare late 70's sessions he did for the short lived! Versatile label will be reason to rejoice for Cornell's fans and marks the first official CD release of this classic material.
