Album Description
The Norwegian guitar and synthesizer duo Solefald (Cornelius Jakhelln and Lazare Nedland) were formed as yet another Norwegian black-metal project. Given the school's precedents, The Linear Scaffold (1997) was mostly irrelevant, and would remain their heaviest album. However, Neonism (1999) began to steer towards brainy compositions and philosophical lyrics, that eventually led to the increasing complexity and technical exhibitionism of Pills Against The Ageless Ills (2001), possibly their apex, and In Harmonia Universal (2003), works that evoke King Crimson's and Yes' progressive-rock. The quality of the band's music continues to evolve on Red For Fire, and is sure to a set new precedence in the extreme music realm. 9 tracks. Season Of Mist. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
...And I thought my 2005 metal album of the year choice was made.......2005-12-18
I've heard that Red for Fire: An Icelandic Odyssey, Pt. I is different from any other Solefald release. And if that is the case, then I am truly intrigued, because just minutes into this newest venture, you can tell that this is a band of many influences that subscribes to the philosophy that the best music is bound by no rules or conventions.
A soothing saxophone welcomes the listener into this so aptly titled odyssey. Three chanting voices follow before the eerie, gothic atmospherics drop into doom-driven distorted guitars. I knew I was in for a startling adventure when this sludge pace suddenly morphed into a more traditional metal cadence, while still utilizing the distinct mood and saxophone undertones.
Truly lifting my spirits was the beginning of track 2, which sounds absolutely nothing like the first track. A Chaos A.D. thrash riff blasts forth from the opening note, but this style gives way to Arcturus-like post-black flourishes off and on through the rest of the song.
It is this variety in style, technique, mood, genre, and rhythm that will have you continually pressing play upon the album's completion for at least...well...I don't know, I still have yet to figure out how many times one must listen to this album before cravings for anything else strike.
Aside from the more traditional metal soundscapes, Solefald includes plenty of classical instrumentation, ranging in effect from prog rock/metal, to Viking metal, to the chilling temper of black metal. One of the most unique tracks on the album, "White Frost Queen", actually contains a synthesizer passage of a middle-estern influence, in addition to what seems to be a full-orchestral string section playing more conventional classical sounds. Tracks like this, while too varied to be described with any blanket analogies, call to mind theatrical Ayreon, mixed with melodic Borknagar.
In the end though, comparisons do this album no justice because you will not hear anything like this anywhere else. Undeniably rooted in the realms of metal, Solefald is still best defined by one term: music. Without hesitation, this duo from Norway, once driven by a heavy black metal sound, now allows itself to be led by the muse of innovation and style. Not since hearing Opeth's Blackwater Park have I been so enthralled by my first exposure to a band. Until I can get my hands on the rest of Solefald's catalogue, my endless search for new and obscure music is being put on hold. As for your own search, do not take another step until you experience this Icelandic odyssey. You have my guarantee that this adventure will cast a new light on all your future musical endeavors.
Always ingenious they have been, but now consistent they are, too!.......2005-12-14
I am Lenore's husband.
These guys are my favourite band. They are composers and not just musisicians. However, I found that in Neonism and Harmonia Universali, although the ingenuity was there, the energy was decreasing with increasing track number.
Here, we have their best album. Still experimental, still mindblowing, and this time the power and energy are there undiminished with each track.
This album is heavy, epic, and unrelenting. Cornelius' vocals have improved by becoming even heavier with less screeching while Lazarus just shines. It is also a great intellectual accomplishment: it is true epic poetry in its finest tradition.
It is strange how this album sounds avantguarde and ancient at the same time.
A great musical accomplishment.
PS. I love Neonism and Harmonia Universali, but this one is even more complicated and rawer at the same time.
A Viking odyssey worthy of the Norse gods themselves.......2005-11-02
Solefald is a band that is known for writing music COMPLETELY different then they do on Red For Fire. In fact, they're a band known for writing really odd music. On Red For Fire, they continue to do so, but it's majestic, epic, sweeping, beautiful, and everything in between.
If you enjoyed their use of saxophone in past albums, you'll love the first track, "Sun I Call". There's a saxophone solo, and it fits it perfectly, along with the lush keyboards and chugging guitar.
"Survival of the Outlaw" displays two of the great things on this album. 1. Lazare's improved vocals, and great use of them. 2. Cornelius's ever changing throaty vocals, and here they change from a raging wolf to screeching creature. The end of this song is also very notable. If you loved the end of "Evacuation Code Deciphered", damn, you're gonna love this.
This album has a great concept as well, and fantastic story. I won't tell you much, because I don't want to spoil the story, but it's great, and definitely stays true to norse story telling. I can't wait till the sequel, "Black for Death" arrives. By the way, it features a guest appearance by the master, Trickster G. (Garm).
Overall, Solefald have created yet another different album, while being one of their best ever. I highly recommend Red For Fire, especially if you love viking metal. Thanks for reading.

Customer Reviews:
Deserves the credit it is given.......2006-05-09
Rage Against the Machine is all about singles, EP's, bootlegs and, really, a live band. Even though there studio releases are great, nothing beats a live Rage Against the Machine show. Well, since they have been disbanded for 6 years now, so the closest you can get now is Audioslave (no thanks). Anyway, whenever Rage Against the Machine releases a single, the import versions contain a bunch of live tracks, b-sides, live covers and even a music video here or there. These singles are available on Amazon, eBay, or maybe you can get lucky with a small, more underground record store. Never try chain stores, because the chance of them having an imported single from 7-15 years ago is slim to none. As for "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt. 1", I have to say that these live songs and the original are, of course, great. But, that is a given when it comes to Rage Against the Machine.
The single, which is the second one off of their monster "The Battle Of Los Angeles", which was released in 1999 as Rage's third studio album. This is the infamous "Sleep Now In The Fire". The track starts off with the main riff, which is one of the coolest riffs Tom has ever made up. The thing about this song is it is so catchy from the start that you have to continue to listen to it. It's just that good. The verse is really Zack just doing a slow rap, or just talking, and the lyrics are very political, of course. The music in the verses is nothing special, but the chorus saves the whole song. This single was propelled to new heights on mainstream radio rock charts, and so was "The Battle Of Los Angeles". This song is a fan favorite, and just one of the many great songs released off of their last album with original songs. (Renegades was next, but it was a cover album). It is also one of my favorite Rage songs, and a live favorite as well.
Now for the extra's. Track 2 is "Guerrilla Radio", probably their biggest mainstream gem (and a great song) performed live. Of curse, the live performance is great as well. Guerrilla Radio owns live, and I am glad that they put it on here. Another live fan favorite, "Bulls On Parade" from their 1996 sophomore album "Evil Empire" is also one of my favorite songs. It sounds great live with that scratchy riff and Zack de la Rocha's sheer anger at the world. Another great song performed live. Of course, "Freedom" is live. Every Rage thing has a live performance of "Freedom", which is from their first album released in 1992. A personal favorite of mine because it brings back so many memories, and I can't help to love that sheer anger and aggression at the end (even though the vocals live are a little annoying). There is a live version of "Sleep Now In The Fire", stuck in there, and this is the best I have heard them perform on any live CD's or bootlegs. Another very good live track.
Yeah. So, even if you own the legendary "Battle Of Los Angeles", you have to pick up this single. This is essential if you are a Rage Against the Machine fan, and even if you are a fan of rap-metal, nu-metal or 90's alternative rock, this band and song are for you. Nothing beats a live Rage concert, but these live songs are above-average. Also, look for their bootlegs. This album should not cost you much used, and it is easier to come by. If you could find "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt.2", then you get more live tracks and a music video. I am also going to clear up this issue with this single. There are many versions, but this is clearly the best one. The live songs sound great, it is easier to get and there is more of a track selection, even though these songs are on "The Battle Of Mexico City" DVD. These singles are out of print, so pick them up while you still have a chance, because it is worth it even for the higher prices that they charge for rare, discontinued singles, especially imports.
Unreleased Live Material Worth Having.......2004-12-29
All four live tracks on this release are from the DVD "The Battle of Mexico City." They are previously unreleased on CD and not from "Live & Rare" or "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium." I give this a five star because it's worth collecting the unreleased live material.
What an awesome song........2000-07-26
Sleep Now in the Fire is such a great song. You will love it.

Essential Elmore.......2004-04-12
Now, if I were you I would get the sublime box set "King Of The Slide Guitar" from Charly records, recently reissued in a handsome three-disc version. That one has got all the songs and various alternate takes from these four "Complete Fire & Enjoy Sessions" discs, plus a dozen more.
But if you prefer to invest in the individual CDs from Collectable Records instead, make sure you get all of them! They're all excellent, albeit a little short at just 12-13 songs each, and this one is as good as any of them.
Elmore James' sizzling, high-octane electric blues is some of the best of its kind, and his reputation as the most important and influential electric slide guitarist is well deserved. Backed by a full band which includes drums, piano, occational bass, tenor saxist J.T. Brown, and cousin "Homesick" James Williamson on second guitar, Elmore gives it his all on every song.
The slow burner "The Sky Is Crying" and the ultimate boogie "Dust My Broom" are of course the best-known songs on this album, but everything here is worth your while, and lesser-known songs like "Done Somebody Wrong", "Early One Morning", and the slow lament "Held My Baby Last Night" are pure joy as well. "Bobby's Rock" is one of Elmore's best instrumentals, and his rendition of "Rollin' And Tumblin'" gives Cream's high-octane version a run for its money.
I'd go get that box set. But either way, it doesn't get any better than this.

Rage against the recycled.......2000-06-19
I know that this is mearly a single containing a few songs, but I can definatly say that this is not rage against the machine's finest work. I only have one question. What happened to the days of the b-side? Many bands decide to contribute a rare song that would be somewhat new to a single. Instead Rage Against The Machine compiled a few live tracks and called it a day. When I bought this disc I really didn't expect much. I merely collect rage propaganda. I do appreciate their live sound, but I really do need something new and interesting to listen to because "the battle of los angeles" just wasn't all to great. So unless you're a die hard rage fan I wouldn't suggest this single, but if you are, good luck collecting all five versions of this single. You'd better stick to amazon.com if you want them all.....

Javine sure can sing, but this song has no melody, is very repetetive and was meant to get her career back on track...which failed, because at the Eurovision contest it didn't win many points and was rather unnerving
