its definately hard to fill in "La Voz" shoes... this album was the beginning of Willie Colons "expanding" on his music and i personaly dont like it that much.yo me quedo con lo bueno salsa y bomba y plena. They Willie and Ismael's chemistry was not there...like i said no one not even Ruben Blades was as good as the Dynamic Duo of Lavoe and Colon.

I would disagree that the program is too varied. This is a bit like an hour-long radio program devoted to the chamber music of Chavez; you wouldn't want it to all be the same. I atually like having the Suite juxtaposed in this way against the other works that are admittedly different in character. The opening work is indeed an "imagined" music and a comparison with anything might seem jarring. The percussion is well recorded, though much of it is delicate rather than powerful. I had thought that Eduardo Mata was a student of Chavez at one time, but can't find any evidence of that after a brief Web search. But this was one of Mata's valedictory albums, and it does make one miss him. Recommended for fans of Latin-American music, or devotees of percussion that can tolerate the other instrumental combinations here.

4 out of 5 stars Good exploration of Chavez' chamber works.......2002-07-11

This is a consistently satisfying CD, and a good introduction to the music of Chavez. If you know Chavez only through his symphonies, then this will prove a worthy exploration indeed.

It also serves a yet another reminder, if indeed we need one, of the great loss the music world has suffered in the premature death of Eduarto Mata.

Like the previous reviewer, my only quibble with this CD is the arrangement of pieces. To place the Suite for Double Quartet right smack dab in the middle of a collection of works that are overwhelmingly percussive in nature simply makes no sense. When I play this CD, occasionally I will simply program the player to move past the Suite, so as to maintain a certain continuity. Perhaps it would have worked better to put the Suite at the end of the CD. How you program your concerts can be just as important as how the pieces are played.

4 out of 5 stars Good yet divergent pieces.......2000-05-27

Being an ardent fan of Chavez' music I must first say that this is a great CD. I have no particular complaints regarding either the works or the performances. My only concern, and thus the reason for four stars instead of five, is the lack of commonality between the selections in the program. I have yet to understand why the ethereal "Suite for Double Quartet"(the best of the CD by the way) was included with the highly percussive and, aside from "Xochiplli", somewhat serialistic works that compose the remainder of the program. While all the works have their merits, the lack of any logic in their inclusion on this disc is somewhat annoying. Yet for true Chavez fans this a must have all the same.

3 out of 5 stars Rather Pallid, Conservative Romantic Italian Orchestral Music.......2005-09-16

On this side of the Atlantic, at least, Riccardo Zandonai (1883-1944) is a one-hit composer, namely for his opera 'Francesca da Rimini.' He was indeed primarily an operatic composer of the late verismo, following in the footsteps of Puccini and Mascagni; he studied with the latter. He wrote non-operatic works primarily, one is told, to fill the time between operatic projects. The two works included here are the Violin Concerto subtitled 'Romantico' (1919) and 'Paintings of Segantini' (1931).

The violin concerto, in the usual three movements, is a rather crude work whose orchestration seems, except in the Adagio middle movement, to be punchy and almost a caricature. The ensemble in this recording, a provincial orchestra from Zandonai's northern Italian Trentino region (in the southern Tyrol), is a bit rough and tumble and that doesn't help the overall impression. Further, the soloist, Stefano Zanchetta, has a small, somewhat acidulous tone. Not a distinguished work nor performance.

Far better are the later 'Quadri di Segantini.' Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899) was an impressionist painter from the Tyrol whose pictures of mountains and peasants have drawn a certain admiration over the succeeding century. There is a Segantini Museum in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Zandonai chose four of the pictures to paint in sound: 'L'Aratura' ('Plowing'), 'Idillio' ('Idyl'), 'Ritorno al paese natio' ('Return to the Birthplace') and 'Meriggio' ('Noon'). Reminiscent in intent of Respighi's 'Pines and Fountains of Rome', the tone poems depict rather nicely the four scenes. (The striking 'L'Aratura' is reproduced beautifully on the cover of the CD's booklet.) Most appealing for me are the last two pieces. 'Ritorno al paese natio' depicts 'a cart slowly driving across the wide plateau, taking back the one who died far away and returns forever.' Impressionistic smears of harmony, using frequent tritones, convey the sadness and inevitability of the procession. 'Meriggio' is a wash of bright orchestral colors calling to mind similar instrumental technique heard in Respighi's 'Pines of the Villa Borghese.' Zandonai has a rather weak gift for melody in this set, alas, and most of the interest in 'Quadri' is in orchestration.

This issue is only for those who are Zandonai completists or those who wish to acquaint themselves with the orchestral works of Italian opera composers. By the time Zandonai came along, though, some Italian composers - like Pizzetti, Casella and Respighi - had specialized in orchestral music and had written more memorable works.

    Energia is fantastic! It is a crossover album with a contemporary, classical feel. What I love most about this CD is that Jose sings in five different languages (Italian, Spanish, French, Catalonian (his native language), and Portuguese. My favorite song on the CD is #6 Passione (Italian). In the chorus part of the song, there is a note that Jose sings that every time I hear it I literally clutch my heart. You can absolutely feel the "pain of passion" in this song. #10 Haja o que Houver (eu espero por ti) (Portuguese) is my second favorite song. Jose sings a duet with Portuguese singer Teresa Salgueiro. The first few times that I heard this song I would cry because it is just so beautiful; the way that their voices blend together is fairy-tale like and so romantic sounding. #3 La chanson des vieux amants (French) is another passionate song where I always get so caught up in Jose's interpretation of it. #4 La Joia (Catalonian) - I always feel very inspired while listening to this song. In addition, it is such a pleasure to hear Jose singing in his native language. Lastly, #1 `Na sera 'e maggio (Italian), and #2 Herido de amor (Spanish) are two more songs that are full of romance and passion! Ladies, you will absolutely enjoy this album!

    This is music that practically makes your spine curl. Each track on this cd is a special gift - wrapped in José's mature and sensual voice and sung in the different languages of the Mediterranean.

    All the songs are sung in languages that I normally have some problems understanding, but actually, you don't need to understand a single word because José's singing will make you understand all you need to know to appreciate the songs. Most of the songs are melancholic love songs, but they are by no means depressing, just achingly beautiful. And this kind of songs fits Carreras's voice like a glove. In "Herido de amor" (hurt by love) you can easily hear his pain and in the song "Haja o que Houver" (No matter what happens, I'll be waiting for you) which is a duet with Teresa Salgueiro from the Portuguese group Madredeus, you really believe that he's waiting for you.....And "La Joia" (the jewell) really is a jewel that's sung in Carreras's mother-tongue. All the tracks are actually "jewels", each in their own different way.

    My absolute favourite track on this recording is "Mandulinata a Napule" which is sung in the strong Neapolitan dialect and accompanied by a Mediterranean choir. It's sung with such emotion and involvement as well as energy that if you close your eyes you're immediately transported to Naples.... It's one of those songs where you want to hit the repeat-button on your cd-player and just let it remain there.

    This cd is a real gem and not to be missed by any of his fans, or anyone else, for that matter. It's not opera; it's not cross-over or anything else. It's beautiful music from Catalonia and Spain, Portugal, Italy and France sung by one of the most beautiful voices in the world. I can only say thank you, Josep. More of this please. And may you never stop singing.

    First off I like to say that I have know Grupo Fuera de Liga since 1998 even though they recorded their first album in 1993. This cd was their best cd. My faviote song is the first song Par de Anillos. This group comes from Puerto Rico and they sing very good songs. For people who do not know Fuera de Liga they are merengue. The singers are lead singer Manuel Arce and Edward Olvio and Georgie Iglesias. These guys have been aroun for 12 years and almost 3 months. They know what they are doing and that is to release great cds to the public. If you have not heard of fuera De Liga you will like theme so bye this cd. Don't speak alot of spanish who cares I don't ethier. So just go bye the cd now !!!!! I also recommend from Gruopo Fuera De Liga Quiero Bailar and Dame Un beso. Thank you.
