5 out of 5 stars Like reliving a childhood!.......2007-07-19

I won't deny that the primary attraction of this rerelease is the amount of nostalgia I felt for the first release--it was released during a bad time in my life, and, in addition to being the first rock album I ever purchased myself, remains one of the only happy memories of the year 1997 for me.

That being said, there is a short piece in the CD's accompanying booklet by band member Nate Mendel, in which he writes, "This is I think the album we'll always be judged against. But, why?"

His answer is that the album is the most "lived in." I agree with that sentiment, and I'll elaborate my theories. Of all the Foo Fighter's works, TCATS has the most depth and range--it tackles issues like loss, relationship struggles, and feeling oppressed--in short, all the topics any angsty teen (as I most certainly was) has no trouble identifying with. Yet, at the same time, the album runs the gamut of emotions. There's the quiet angst of the opening track, 'Doll,' the dramatic reverence contained in 'My Hero,' the whimsical lightheartedness of 'See You,' and the full-out edge of rock tracks like 'Enough Space,' and 'Hey, Johnny Park!' It's as much a roller coaster ride as an album, and while no single song can stand on its own as well as later Foo works such as 'All My Life' or 'Learn to Fly,' every track is an integral part of the whole experience.

The addition of the six bonus tracks on this rerelease only adds to the experience--the four covers are all b-sides from the original album's singles, and the two additional tracks are planned tracks for the album that were left on the mixing room floor, so to speak. The title track, in particular is of note--it's the closest you'll hear Foo Fighters to sounding like Grohl's previous band, Nirvana, with all its fuzz, distortion, and beautiful disharmony.

All in all, it's a highly recommended purchase, whether you own the original or not--in addition to bonus tracks, the entire original album is remastered, and it sounds crisper and more energetic than ever.

5 out of 5 stars classic cd.......2007-07-18

this is the cd that put the foo fighters on the map. they hadn't quite distinguished themselves as a rock band yet, so they were looking for an identity, and got one with this album. there are the popular songs like "my hero", and "monkey wrench", but there are great unknown songs like "hey johnny park" and "new way home" that really bring this album to life. and as if this album wasn't great enough ten years ago they re-released it with great b-sides as extras. "baker street" is a great cover and so is "down in the park." "dear lover" is a nice love song, and "requiem" is a cool, trippy tune also. all in all the foo fighters put out an excellent album a decade ago, and made it even better with the re-release. get this cd if you remotely like the foo fighters. this is their best record.

5 out of 5 stars great album.......2007-07-15

I didn't really buy this again for the re-mastering because lets face it, it didn't really need to be re-mastered(you can barely make out the sound difference except for it being a little cleaned up) I bought this again for the six bonus tracks which were all b-sides. I also bought it for the packaging. Foo Fighters are a great band.

5 out of 5 stars Great album - Exta tracks just a bonus.......2007-07-14

The Foo Fighters' second album, their first as a "real band" (the first was just a Grohl solo project, essentially) has stood the test of time remarkably well. It has the all-too-rare combination of hard rock and melody. From the outstanding "Monkey Wrench" to the dramatic closer "New Way Home," the cd works as individual songs and as an album as a whole.

This edition with bonus tracks doesn't really offer anything new, but only enhances an already excellent cd by conveniently gathering together the b-sides from this era. I wouldn't describe the b-sides as necessary for anyone other than the hardcore fans (though, if you don't already own this album, you might as well get this edition.)

For those new to the Foo Fighters, this is a great place to start, but don't let the "special edition" stuff fool you: the real greatness of this cd is the main album itself.

5 out of 5 stars So glad I bought this!.......2007-07-13

To say that I am a big fan of the Foo Fighters is an understatement. I have all their albums, and a few singles. This is definetly worth getting.

Now I will be 100% honest. There Is Nothing Left To Lose is still my personal favorite cd. The Colour And The Shape is a very, very close second. Don't get me wrong. I love Colour, and some people like this album the best.

This cd however is still one of my favorite cd's of all time. My hero and everlong are just so perfect, not to mention see you and new way home.

The extra tracks are awesome. I don't like requiem and drive me wild. Never have. But the rest I love! Very great b side tracks.

If you are a border line fan and don't really have one of their cd's, get this one first. You will be blown away. And even if you have the original, this is definetly worth the buy.

From Amazon.co.uk

Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you've just crept into someone's bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia's voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There's certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener "Rewrite" works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while "Sunday" turns "Strawberry Fields" harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. "Sweet Potato" sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but "Bully", a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. --Paul Tierney

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great to chill out to.......2007-07-21

I am vaguely familiar with the musical stylings of Sia. I have heard some of her collaborations with the downtempo duo Zero 7. She was the only good thing that I liked about Zero 7 whose music I find rather dreary and uninspiring. I recently came across Sia's 2006 re-release of her album COLOUR THE SMALL ONE. I thought I would check it out. I have to say that I definitely like her solo work than any fo the stuff she has done with Zero 7. Her music is a pleasant mix of pop, folk, and trip hop music, perfect music to listen to while enjoying a cup of coffee while reading the morning paper. The only flaw with her music is that it sounds pretty much the same like her stuff with Zero 7. Still I find her solo music more pleasant to listen to. I really like the delicate melodies and her fragile vocals on songs like "Re-write" and "Breathe Me". The one song I really wasn't too fond of is "Sweet Potato" because of the melody (or lack thereof) and Sia's voice which sounds out of tune. The remixes were alright but I could have lived without them all the same. For all its minor flaws, COLOUR THE SMALL ONE is a very good chillout cd, much better than any Zero 7 cd IMO.

4 out of 5 stars New mold of songwriting.......2007-05-08

I'm docking a star for 2 tracks where Sia tries to sing like Nelly Furtado. Otherwise, a pretty great album for the following tracks at the very least:

Rewrite
Sunday
Breathe Me(wow)
The Bully
Don't Bring Me Down

What some people are missing about Sia is that she doesn't belt out the showtunes like Barbara Streisand, and that was NEVER the point! Sia follows directly in the line of intense, moody confessional singer-songwriters like Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan. IT's about baring her soul to the audience, and she definitely does it here to great effect.

Also to a previous reviewer who said that Sia ripped off Tori Amos in "Breate Me", well that's some neat trick to be able to sing write and sing like that, no? Besides, Tori never wrote such straightforward lyrics, the Queen of Obtuseness.

5 out of 5 stars Her name drew me in first.......2007-04-05

I went to the store to buy a Zero 7 CD. The clerk asked me if I was familiar with the female singer on the CD named Sia. I looked at him with a smile and asked "Who?".He repeated her name. I was smiling because her name sounds exactly like what my sisters call me, although my name is Cecelia. It is written "Ceya" when they've written their version of my name. Needless to say to all who are reading this: THE GIRL AIN'T PLAYIN'!! She struck me like an open-hand slap when I heard her sing "You don't know me...." on the opening of REWRITE. I am a Black 46yr old female who may have lived every song on the CD. 'SUNDAY' has a rolling, lazy funk about it. 'NUMB' ain't lyin'....'THE CHURCH OF WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW' has Sia pleading "Go away yesterday" as if they're her last words. I just fell in love with her. I consider her a Master Wordsmith. She is a voice I find myself having to hear every day since buying this CD. She speaks to me. Oh! and I can't forget those fantabulous musicians who are doing a hellified job crafting those melodies. This Ceya LOVES Sia!!!

3 out of 5 stars A little slow and boring, but once known, worth the time........2007-04-02

Sia is hard to get attached to. Her music is slow, and not all that original. Her voice is what drew me in on the single, Sunday, but on most of her other tracks, she doesn't stretch it, and it gets kind of boring. On the whole though, once you get used to the melody (if they have one) of the songs, it becomes comforting to hear them. Almost like going home after working all day.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, acoustic-esque style with hints of Dido and jazz/blues overtones.......2007-03-22

Very satisfying purchase. "Colour the Small One" has a simple, near-acoustic rock style which, along with Sia's vocals, are reminiscent of Dido's "Life for Rent" and include many jazz and blues overtones. Guitar, brass instruments, synth organ, and even the xylophone are tastefully blended with both fast and slow percussion in amounts that are often quite complex, yet carefully avoid the "noise rock" effect. Unlike Dido, the lyrical content avoids any edgy or potentially offensive territory, making this album safe for any casual listening audience. Presently lingering near the top of my playlist rotation.

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour & the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There's even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars," whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars rock on dave grohl.......2007-07-18

ya dave was the drummer for nirvana but he still went on to form his own band and make GREAT music. he is a true musical talent. on the inside sleeve of this album it states he does vocals, drums and guitars! (with the exception of bass). that is a true musician. surprisingly his voice is pretty good. the big hit here is monkey wrench but they are all pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars The second album=same excellent rock.......2007-03-08

This album it is the beginnig of the big success of this band, you will find songs like MY HERO and EVERLONG, Foo Fighters mix the fun with rock with sad love history, if you like an alternative rock music buy this album

5 out of 5 stars The second best alternative band ever.......2004-09-18

Oddly enough I thought that Nirvana, the band that Dave Grohl drummed for from '91 - '94 was the greatest grunge\punk\alternative band of all time. When Dave decided to be a frontman I was a bit concerned since he was such a great drummer and I thought thats where he belonged. When Dave released the Foo Fighters self-titled debut album it went platinum even though Dave didn't have a band and the album was just made up of demos written by Dave during the Nirvana era. There is no question that Dave learned some things from grunge god Kurt Cobain, but in this album the student becomes the master.
This album is much more powerful and melodic than Daves first, now he has a band! Dave Grohl has now decided to be lead vocalist and rythem guitarist with Pat Smear, a person who used to tour with Nirvana on lead guitar and some other great musicians on rhythem. A songs that really stands out is 'November Stars' which in my opinion is the albums best song, mainly because its a ballad! I've really never heard a ballad from an alternative band before. Dave is one of the most talented musicians ever, like Alice Cooper said before me, quote "Dave... What a drummer and then he puts down the drum sticks and decides to be lead singer" unquote, that alone makes him great. This is probably the second best Foo album next to 'Theres nothing left to lose'. Buy it if you like Nirvana, grunge, late eighties\early ninties music, alternative or just rock in general.

5 out of 5 stars Magnitude warps space and time..........2004-07-20

"Colour and the Shape" is plain and simply one of the best albums I have ever heard. Dave Grohl's musical genius should never be discounted, and his talents far surpass almost anyone in the business today - simply put, he is a living legend. CATS is simply awesome, from the mellow opener 'Doll' to the sonic assault that is 'Monkeywrench'. Sonic assault is the perfect word to describe this album. The setup is interesting, as it goes from a series of short songs, that lead up to big ones. 'Up In Arms' is one of the small songs (great one at that) but its message and length is perfect as the drum intro to 'My Hero' begins. The last 4 tracks are an absolute treat and 'Everlong', 'Walking After You', and 'New Way Home' is about a strong a 1-2-3 punch to finish of an album as I have ever seen, rivaled by none other. "Colour and the Shape" is an absolutely essential album. Many years from now, the ripples left behind by Dave Grohl will be alongside names such as Dylan, Lennon, and Morrison, as the true legends of rock music. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Foo Fighters.......2004-04-14

I thought this was a great album. I have heard many of their albums but the guitars on this are splendid. In some ways after listening to Nirvana for so long I hear a bit of them in this album. Even the drumming sounds a bit the same. I could never compare the two. Kurt will be sorely missed, but Dave is still going strong.

5 out of 5 stars My First Time.......2007-04-01

I remember, back when my older brother got his first car and popped this cd in when I rode with him. I fell in love with this cd so much that I knew when the skips happened(and still do till this day) and was sad when he lost this cd. Years Later, I had my own collection but it was missing something. So I searched and searched and finally found it! I've seen the movie but I will always love this album. There's heavy, hard, laid back, funky, and truly bizzare, all are great.

1 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-03-12

I hated the music on this CD. The only track I liked on the whole CD was track 2 and I love it - I play that track over and over.

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack from a forgettable film. .......2007-01-10

If I remember correctly around the time this movie came out is when the film industry started to realize with a good soundtrack packed full of kick butt artists they could really draw in larger crowds and make more money off soundtrack sales. Well, this CD is one of many victims of that film industry marketing genius that came about in the early 90's that took some great artists of the day, and in my opinion made one of the must have movie soundtracks of its time for anyone who is a fan of rap, rock, metal, or alternative.

Sure the music itself is now going on 14 years old, but at the time this was one earth moving rap-rock masterpiece considering that the now classic Aerosmith/Run DMC and Anthrax/Public Enemy duets were the only real previous rap-rock collaborations in the public eye.

For the general Joe public I would say keep browsing and save your money. As for the fans of some of the artists that just need to hear those extra songs, like myself, or the genre that might be interested in hearing the tracks I would say go for it, but like any other CD not every song is a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Forgot about this one.......2006-02-20

The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was a concept album that sadly went unnoticed. Before morons like Limp Biskit and Linkin Park ruined the rap/rock genre, this was probably the best all-around album of its kind, up there with the first couple Rage Against the Machine records. Standouts include what I consider Helmet's best song ever, "Just Another Victim," which is really two songs cut in half, with House of Pain borrowing the riff to make the latter minutes into great old-school hip hop. Slayer and Ice-T, Cypress Hill with Pearl Jam (the latter whom I usually HATE), and a brilliantly disturbing teaming of Faith No More and Boo-Yaa Tribe for "Another Body Murdered" (the first FNM song recorded after they fired original guitarist Jim Martin) are among the tightest and most intense here. Just stay away from the retarded title track by Onyx and Biohazard, it blows.

5 out of 5 stars The only good rap-rock ever recorded.......2005-12-11

Good rap-rock is rarer than giant diamonds. This here is the Koh-i-Noor of the genre. What?

Album Description

The Maccabees deliver a stunning record crammed full of sparkling indie pop that bites deep and just won't let go. There's something deliciously dreamy about Colour It In. It has a poppy edge, but there's nothing contrived about it.

The band say they don't have any control over their music, that the songs just come out that way. "It's not like we've been playing our instruments for ten years," says Orlando. "Any naiveté is genuine." What The Maccabees want most of all is to make people feel special. "We get kids at the front of our gigs and they look at us the way I used to look at bands," says Felix. "You can just see it in their eyes. It means something to them. And that means something to us."

In a year, for me at least, where all the major "indie" releases have been disappointments (from Wilco to Bjork) this hits it out of the park on nearly every song.

It has a kind of contsant nervous churn that sounds familiar (early REM, Interpol, Clinic) but feels new, if that makes any sense. The standouts are the fast/slow "Mary" and (single?) "First Love."

"The Power of Love" was Celine Dion's first chart-topping song in America, but it was a career-defining moment in more ways than one. It established her as a dependable hitmaker and also fixed the pattern of her biggest successes to come--songs that begin with delicate melodies and spare instrumentation and build into big, powerful productions over which Dion's incomparable vocals hit stratospheric heights. Dion attempts other directions on The Colour of My Love, such as the light dance-pop of "Misled" and "Everybody's Talkin' My Baby Down," but they don't ring as true as her duet with Clive Griffin in "When I Fall in Love" (from the film Sleepless in Seattle) and the title track. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars there are moments.......2007-06-18

There was a time when it seemed there would be no getting past Celine Dion's overwhelming voice. Vocal music would end, then and there, along with the 20th century and the millennium. No higher musical peaks worthy of scaling appeared on the horizon.

This album was a watershed in the career of a woman who sang so strongly and then appeared to disappear suddenly from the recording world. From the opening lines, 'The whispers in the morning ....', Celine put us on notice that her diminutive size in no way correlates to the sound that flows with what looks like effortless ease--artists know that it is nothing of the kind--from the skinny songstress.

Some found the highly produced quality of this cd worthy of their scorn. But in the tradition of big stage music, Celine's style is - unapologetically - just what it is. When she announced her transition to a grueling feet-on-the-ground commitment to Vegas, no one could be too surprised. She sings from the stage even when there is no stage.

It is difficult to choose the best track on this CD. Certainly 'Next Plane Out' would Compete'. Though laurels may go in the end to 'Love Doesn't Ask Why', that piece--an existential untruth but a marvelous piece of singing--would have to edge out 'I Remember L.A.':

'I remember L.A.'
Seems a lifetime ago
We were stars on Sunset Boulevard
What a move we made

There were days in the sun
That have stayed forever young
Nights when passion was invincible
We thought love would never die

There were moments in that lifetime
That my heart still replays
There were minutes, there were hours
There were days
There are moments I still love you
That same way
When I remember L.A.'

Who can not place themselves in Celine's L.A. with a lover who is now just a memory, though - in moments - a living presence? The almost imperceptible passage from 'were' to 'are' as the heart replays tells the whole story.

It is in conjuring up the colours of love, as she did with such surging prowess, that Celine carved out a place in our memory. A fine album.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up.......2007-02-28

I never listened to Celine Dion's music much. I happened to check this album out from the library and had to go out and buy it after it was returned. This album has just the right mix of sad, slow love songs and up-beat ones. I would buy all of her CD's simply based on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Cd....Love/ Romantic Ballads.............2006-12-24

I am a die-hard Celine fan and yes, this cd is mostly romantic/love songs ballads but this Cd does have some variety a little pop and dance ballads (song choice is why its 4/5 stars because there could have been more variety, some of the songs sound the same*).

Yes most of the songs are sappy and that is why a lot of people don't like this cd, but love is what this cd is all about.

Just to point out a few songs on the Cd:

Refuse to Dance(a good violin ballad in background) sounds like A Madonna song, its kind of a dark deep song.

The best song is The Power of Love, Celine's vocals are amazing! It has more of a rock edge to it.

The Colour of My Love is the most romantic song and if you a romantic at heart it could make you cry (some would also find is sappy/cheesy as well).

*Think Twice(excellent guitar ballad in the background), *Next Plane Out and *Only One Road, are very romantic ballads just as *Colour of My Love. All are good.

Remember L.A. is a sad song, remembering back to a previous relationship.

Anyway, this is a good cd to add to your collection just for the Power Of Love alone (the original verison).

WARNING if you are not into sappy songs this cd isn't for you...

After listening to it for awhile it might grow on you (I first thought it was ok and then each time i listened to it I liked it better and better).

That's all for this Album..

2 out of 5 stars Step in the wrong direction.......2005-12-20

I love Celine Dion's music. Even though Mariah Carey is my all-time favorite I still love Celine's incredible voice. However she does have her misses... like this album. I am a huge fan of her Self-titled, "Falling Into You" and "Let's Talk About Love" albums. Unfortuantely I didn't enjoy this. It didn't seem like it was from the heart. it seemed like it was made for mass appeal like her debut album. The only songs I really liked was "The Power of Love"--one of her best singles. I'm being VERY generous for giving this 2 stars. The only reason I'm doing it is because of the "Power of Love." I'd reccomend "Celine Dion", "Falling Into You" or "Let's Talk About Love" over this anyday. D-

Having scored massive USA college and independent station airplay and a video in rotation on MTV Europe and Japan, and having been dubbed a Myspace.com "Artist Of The Week," the Pinker Tones, a Barcelona-based electronica duo, are gaining adherents the world over. On their second album, the cheeky, musically larcenous duo incorporate everything from hot-wired, Super Fly-esque 1970s soul and muscle-headed but endearingly fluffy hip-hop to organ-glazed, beat-trussed bossa nova, with lyrics in English, French, German, and Spanish. "Piccolisima Descarga," 33 seconds of Kraftwerk-like mecho-madness (a relapse occurs during "Maybe Next Saturday"), feeds into "In Pea We Nuts," a wah-wah-frosted instrumental Barry White would have loved. "Pink Freud" reveals what the Beatles might have sounded like if they were still living in Hamburg during The White Album. "Love Tape," with its Ian Anderson-like lead flute, is both intricate and studiedly silly, while "Pinkerland Becaina" is a faux-tropical hallucination. Mister Furia (Salvador Rey) and Professor Manso (Alex Llovet) obviously have a fondness for hand percussion and retro, comparatively cumbersome sonic technologies like the Moog synthesizer and Theremin. But the way they employ them is as new as yesterday seemed while it was happening yet as old as tomorrow will feel the day after. Seductively disorienting, the tunes caress the ear and galvanize the hips like kaleidoscopic sequences of multi-culti déjà vu. --Christina Roden

Album Description

This dynamic duo from Barcelona have enjoyed success around the world with their intoxicating mix of electro, pop, dance, Latin, and lounge. Their stateside debut contains infectious beats laced with lyrics in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. "One of the most talked about bands of the year" - Loaded, UK. "A cult sensation taking the world by storm" - FHM, South Africa. Their sensational music video, "Sonido Total", is stirring up interest around the globe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly a color revolution.......2007-05-09

If you like funky dance music then, this is the CD for you. The Pinker Tones' Color Revolution is a wonderfully fun collection of music. It is an album you will certainly be humming long after you've played it or, jumping up to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars really impressive.......2007-01-10

I am really enjoying this CD. I love the broad range of musical styles that the Pinker Tones employ on this record. "Karma Hunters" has been influenced by punk, while "Welcome to TMCR" has a 70s soul feel. Many of the songs are infused with electro-pop-hooks, and are incredibly catchy...I find myself trying to sing along, even though there is one song each in French, Spanish, and German. I'm looking forward to hearing more work from this band.

5 out of 5 stars Infectious.........2006-08-17

..and fun and definitely worth a listen. The guys are having a blast and it really rubs off. There are songs that you'll be humming all day like Karma Hunters and L'Heros and you can't help but smile listening to Pink Freud. Can't wait for their next album.

5 out of 5 stars Great electronica for eclectic tastes.......2006-06-21

I heard about the Pinker Tones on a podcast some time ago, and from that moment I knew I had to get this album. If you dig that kind of retro-loungey, kitschy electro-pop sound from bands like Ursula 1000, Pizzicato Five, Titan, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Kinky and the like, you have to get this CD too. TPT gives a try at everything they can get their hands on - from bossa nova to breaks to space age pop-infused disco beats sparkled with a big heap of orchestral and talk samples for good measure. Depending on how eclectic your taste is, you may either find this album as a weird mix of offbeat tracks, or a perfectly good mélange of songs sharing a common kitsch-pop feel, which I can live perfectly with.

5 out of 5 stars Great all round music.......2006-04-11

I first found this group on my space and I admired one of the members photography and just for the heck of it clicked on some of their songs and they were really good. They are very open minded, unique individuals and you can hear that in their music.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-05-11

I really love this CD. I even bought another copy for a friend.

5 out of 5 stars "Your words are like knives.....they peel my skin and pierce my soul....".......2006-10-26

Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist Dallas Green recently made the wise decision to, on a bit of downtime from his musical priority Alexisonfire, release a solo album. None of this is new material, however. Dallas, being a gifted songwriter, simply picked his 10 favorite previously unreleased songs straight out of his closet. And the results are superb. The name of the artist is Dallas Green but he calls himself "City and Colour", supposedly not intentionally after his name(City/Dallas, Colour/Green). City and Colour is definitely oriented towards the female crowd, with it's emotionally sentimental acoustic sound and Green's pretty vocal stylings. However, if you're anything like me, you'll be right at home with Sometimes.

The majority of Sometimes is driven by Dallas's singing and acoustic guitar, although once in a while you'll hear a piano or violin. This is such a contrast to Alexisonfire(Green's main project), which is a heavy darker sounding screamer/metal hybrid. But it's for the better, because here we see what Green is capable of once left on his own.

The first track off of Sometimes is a short, albeit obscure song called "Off By Heart". Running at just under 2 minutes, I imagine it was just thrown on to create heft. Although it ended up being one of the better songs on the record, and also a good showcase of Dallas's singing abilities. Following immediately after is "Like Knives", arguably the best track on the disc. It has a beautiful soul to it, with an emotional yet at times reserved vocal, ultimately ending in an emotionally charged cry for a lost love.

"Hello, I'm in Deleware" is the third track on Sometimes, opening with an infectious "can't-get-it-out-of-your-head" acoustic melody that really shows off Green's prowess. Again this is more of the emotionally driven lyricism that dominates City and Colour's debut. The next song, "Save Your Scissors" was actually the first single off of the album(combined there are now two), a number one hit on MuchMusic here in Canada, it has an insanely catchy chorus and once again displays Dallas Green's vocals.

There is one song I could have done without, "In the Water, I am Beautiful", which I find sort of annoying and lyrically cheesy. Probably his weakest lyrics on Sometimes. Other than that the rest of the songs range from good to fantastic. "Day Old Hate" is definitely a contendor for best song off the album. Again another amazing lyrical outpouring of emotion and melody. It's a slow burn, at about 6:44, but it's definitely one of my favorite songs, about as good as "Like Knives", another beautifully written/arranged song.

I debated with myself over whether Sometimes was worthy of 5 stars or not, but after having listened to Sometimes at least 30 or so times, I can safely say that I think it's worth 5 stars. Even if a few of the tracks aren't as inspired as the rest of the album.

City and Colour's future is unknown at this point, but going based off of what Dallas Green has said concerning his music career, it sounds like this was just a product resulting from a back catalogue of previously written material and some downtime from what he holds most important right now, Alexisonfire. I can only hope that he will write some more songs and maybe throw in a few more from his back catalogue, because this album is touching, and I will forever consider it a sentimental treasure.

5 out of 5 stars City and Colour, excellent album.......2006-10-09

Dallas Greens work in Alexisonfire has always been their saving grace. The guy can write a guitar riff and vocal hook like it's nobody's buisness and his clean, crystalline voice is not all too dissimilar from Thom Yorke on this album, but with much more power and less of the despair Thom litters about, almost too much these days.

Sometimes is a personal, acoustic foray that is just a well-written, well-played 46 minutes. Highly remniscent of singer-songwriters from the 70's, Sometimes has a largely classic and timeless feel while still incorporating some modern emo elements.

While most band members solo projects end up being a mess, drastically different than their bands material to the point it feels forced, and overall just not very good, City and Colour succeeds heads and shoulders above the rest.

If you're a fan of Alexisonfire, or a fan of acoustic outings, or hell just a fan of a well-written album, be sure to check this out.

5 out of 5 stars My boyfriend hates it. I love it........2006-10-09

I've always been a vague fan of Alexisonfire, and my favourite thing about the band is Dallas Green's voice. There's an interesting kind of clarity to his timbre, and a kind of barely-repressed emotional bite. It was a cool combination for the frontman of a band like Alexisonfire, but in this moody, guy-with-guitar setting it's displayed perfectly.

The album plays like a love letter to a single person, with references to time and distance throughout. It sounds heartbreakingly sincere, painful and comforting all at once. It's got a wonderful, moody atmosphere and a lyrical feeling that sounds unforced and natural. I'm officially addicted.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff from Dallas Green singer from Alexisonfire.......2006-07-31

Again Great stuff from Dallas Green singer from Alexisonfire. Which contrary to the last post Alexisonfire has not disbanded but low and behold will be releasing a new album next month called crisis. I have heard it and it is the best album yet. Check it out people if you like Dallas Green you cannot help but like Alexisonfire.

5 out of 5 stars strength of reviews should tell you something.......2007-07-21

Okay i am almost ashamed to admit but i heard about this band from the Dance Dance Revolution Universe Bundle video game

If "Slam" is not the best D&B song of all time, then i don't know what is. One note though, you need a powered sub woofer for this album or you are only hearing 80% of the music.

5 out of 5 stars hold your color.......2007-06-08

Great D&B album. Check out the essential mix or the breezeblock mix for more.

5 out of 5 stars Best DnB album ever.......2007-01-31

This is genuinely the best drum and bass album ever, in my opinion. If you listened to any DnB sets at all in 2005 or 2006, you'll almost certainly recognize every single song on this album. It's truly a remarkable blend of beautiful vocals and hardcore headbanging bass. Every song fits within the album as a whole, and at the same time they're all very different. Buy this album -- it's well worth it, even at 27 dollars.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-01-20

I'm new to the magical world of Drum and Bass with Trance as my gateway drug. I enjoy that this album has a good stylistic range; some songs are really hard and intense (Slam, Through the Loop, Tarantula) while some are not so hard and intense (Sounds of Life, Girl on Fire, Hold Your Colour). What makes this worth a rating of five to me is the consistency of quality from track to track. I don't end up skipping forward to hear the two or three good songs typically on a CD, but rather listen to the whole thing from start to finish. I highly recommend this album to those with an interest in D&B.

5 out of 5 stars Coloured.......2007-01-12

I bought this CD on an impulse after listening to only one song, and it now ranks as one of the high points in my collection. Each song is distinct and lasts long past the initial "new CD feeling". "Girl in the Fire" and "Hold Your Colour" are epic, while "The Terminal" has a darker mood. "Slam" swings between hip-hop beats and techno soundscapes while the last 3 songs are all softer and surprisingly enjoyable. Vocals are employed on nearly every track, and it feels as if the music had been composed with a certain vision in mind.

Overall, a great CD, and necessary if you have even a passing interest in electronic music.
