5 out of 5 stars what could have been.......2005-08-12

A review needs not be that long. This album is hot, scorching hot. Worth every penny new and a steel used. I strongly believe that if Jerry had stuck with this style and really worked at producing every one of his albums to the musical caliber of this one, he'd be more than just a headliner.

3 out of 5 stars One song worth the money. 3-5 stars.......2004-05-06

This Cd is a veritable plethura of energy, spun in the United States largest club, Spundae, by one of its resident dj's; arguably its premier, Jerry Bonham.

Most anything that Bedrock puts out (AKA Jon Digweed) is going to be solid. Song #5, Heavenscent is no exception, reaching anthem status near the same time as Expander (Sasha) and Three Drives on a Vinyl, (Greece 2000).

This cd an early conglomerate of mainly west coast trance being from San Fran, and most of it honestly is mediocre at best. The cd was recorded I assume in the peak of the millenium trance explosion where the rave scene really solidified in its transformation into corporately sponsored venues. It is mixed extremely well, but then again, how hard is it to mix trance? The motonous 4/4 backbeat makes the genre's percussion the most simplistic out of all the electronic music types.

Lost in Love is the other note-worthy song on the album, due to its epic remix by Starecase, a remixer who later was found by Paul Oakenfold and subsequently vaulted onto the international stage.

*****HOWEVER, the last song on the cd makes the entire transaction fully worth your money. I have professionally and closet dj'ed for over six years, and to this day I have never found a trance song that even compares to Octavia Project's, "Katria," the surreal mix. This is the only cd it was ever recorded onto, so good luck finding it on vinyl.

The song begins with a killer tribal breakbeat that rhythmically is an oasis of refreshment after the monotonous recycled trance beat that is the cardiac thread of the cd.
The Tribal Breakbeat cascades to beautiful ambient sections in the down-time and phenomenal percussion variations and fills. The most incredible thing about the song, however, is its swell and chorus. There is about a 70 second ambient filler of some incredible comp noise, dissonat chords and such, backed with some melody and counter tempo beats.

Simultaneously the song begins a pregnant swell that amounts to a macro-atomic explosion with more kg's than anything on wax I have ever heard.
It builds something sinister, pulsing, stretching thematically and literally until there is a conflagration of female voices in classic choir "awwwing" accompanied by incredible chordal progressions and some nasty tech build that crescendo the pitch and melody. The bass thunders a B flat 6 hit and a minor chord and then 'enter' the most serious, epic, resolution and recycle I have ever heard. "Katria" is an aural euphoria, a utopia of sounds, beats, and melody. Literally it is the single masterpiece the pre-2003 trance genre has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars High Quality.......2001-08-16

This cd was at one point one of my most over played. I have moved on to brighter prospects. The cd has many slow moments of relentless repetative sounds that blend together so effortlessly due to their lack of individualism. However the last track Katria is a wonderous magical piece that creates an awesome world in my mind. The beats are very basic and driving, but still get the job done. I feel as far as compilation discs go, it is above average.

5 out of 5 stars Hall of Famer.......2000-09-19

This is one of the first trance CDs I purchased, and now ~30 trance CDs later, this will always remain in the Top 5 of my collection. Not only are the first three tracks probably the best transitions ever, but the first track practically illicits a psychosomatic response from me (first time I heard it was New Years Eve in Vegas @ Club Utopia). This is an excellent showcase for JB's phenomenally smooth, catchy style and I can't wait until he comes out with another CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite trance albums.......2000-06-24

I bought this last year with little knowledge of what Trance is. This CD blew my face away(or ears rather). If I'd pick a CD that open the trance scene to me it would be this. Out of 60+ trance albums this is one of my top 10. This is one of those rare album that you'll keep going back to. It's full of so much pure energy its awesome especially right now with all these dark trance making into the scene. My favorite is the last track: Octavia Project-Katria (sureal mix). This is just pure poetry. 8 minutes of poetry translated into music. I'd would buy this CD just for that track alone.

5 out of 5 stars The Best I've Heard So Far........2005-01-03

Of all the Trance music I have listened to over the past seven years, I would have to say this is the most memorable that I have had the pleasure of hearing and then later owning. These songs(in my personal opinion and I'm sure some of you will disagree) are the clear defenition of trance. Since I find nearly all of the tracks are enjoyable, I feel it would be easier to list which tracks I don't like; those are:

02 If I Were You [Michael Woods Remix]:
Not a lot of emotion, but still has a powerful beat that you can dance to.

11 C:/Del*. MP3:
I do like this song, but I think I should say that it's first impression makes it out as the emotionless techno stereotype, which is true to a point but doesn't make it any less of a song.

05 Crush [PVD Remix]:
It's a good song, it is just placed in an inapropriate position. After "No One on Earth", it's opening lyrics come off as kind of Conceded. That's my only problem with however, as the vocals are, in fact, top notch.

11 Nothing I Won't Do
&
12 Summer Jam 2004 [DJ F.R.A.N.K.'s Summermix Extended]:
These just don't fit in the album at all in my opinion and seem very lowbrow and immiture for lack of a better description coming after something as beautiful and melodic(in my opinion) as "Now That We Are Free"

As for the tracks I like so much that I can't describe why, I've narrowed down my top five(in track order) to:

01 Beautiful Things [Gabriel & Dresden Unplugged Mix]
03 Turn It Around [Extended Mix]
12 Holding Onto Nothing [Original Mix]
03 Newlife [Original Mix]
10 Now That We Are Free [Extended Mix]

in close second:

07 Another World [Original 12" Mix]
08 Santa Cruz [R.E. Mix]
01 Take Me to the Clouds Above [Flip and Fill Remix]
04 No One on Earth [Gabriel & Dresden Remix]
06 Sahara

Please Note that these opinions have been written after listening to both CDs several times and do not reflect my first impressions on them.

5 out of 5 stars Trance Fan Matt.......2004-08-13

I chose this cd out of a few others that i was debating to buy...and i have no regrets about my choice. This cd is great and captures the definition of trance

5 out of 5 stars lives up to its predecessor.......2004-08-04

Trance Nation America 3 seems to pick up right where Volume 2 left off. Although this one isn't mixed as well as Vol. 2, the tracks are just as good if not better. The first cd is highlighted by Lasgo's "Surrender," Angelli & Nelson's "Holding On To Nothing," and Ashavaa's "Sunlight." Cd 2 features Benny Bennasi with "Love Is Gonna Save Us," and "Sun Is Shining," by DT8 Project. This is a tremendous cd and any trance fan should have this one in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars impulse buy.......2004-07-19

Was at the store and took a risk on this cd since i didnt know whether it was vocals or not. Its really good some are vocals and some arent, but still a great cd.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Another Excellent-Sounding Release From Hi-Bias!.......2007-01-09

Once again Hi-Bias goes the extra mile by issuing a number of favorite and rare 12" versions in the best sound yet. All songs have been digitally remastered from the original source masters using their trademark 'Aural Submission' process. The results are incredible!!!

Who would believe that Kool & The Gang's "Celebration" was released in 1980 by listening to this release? This song has been played to death and should have been presented in it's original 12" version. Instead, we get the standard LP version. However, this LP version has never sounded better!

Newcleus' "Jam On It" sounds like it has been recorded in the last year with it's underlying bass and punchy drums. It is easily one of the best-sounding 80's tracks I've ever heard. AMAZING! We finally get the "Long Mix" of Yaz's "Don't Go" from the original tapes here! I've been waiting for this! Again, it shows no age in terms of sound.

So why is Devo's "Whip It" here as a bonus track? It's quite laughable really when glancing at the back of the case. That is, until you place the CD in your player and skip ahead to track 12! Some buyers may cringe at the addition of this track since it never had a 12", but wait until you hear it in it's original album version! You'll probably forgive Hi-Bias for issuing a high quality master!

I highly recommend this volume in addition to the other releases from Hi-Bias Canada! The only reason for the 4 star rating is the inclusion of LP versions over 12" versions when 12" versions exist. Of course, the lack of some 12" versions could be the result of missing master tapes in which the LP version became the substitute. If such is the case then it should have been stated in the liner notes. In any case, buy this for the sound alone!

3 out of 5 stars WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE RARETIES???.......2006-09-26

This great series falls flat this time around--there is barely a track on here that hasn't shown up on other CDs, and there are still so many rare 80s 12" singles that need to find their way to CD. The biggest slap in the face is putting Whip It on here, which never had a 12" version. It's an okay start for those who haven't begun collecting 12" version on CD yet, but longtime dedicated collectors will be disappointed.
