Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Back in 1969, Muddy Waters and Otis Spann teamed with young guns Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield to create Fathers & Sons. The idea was to match the sagacity of the "old timers" with the flash and commercial muscle of the upstarts. Nearly three decades later, Jimmy Rogers (like Spann, an alumnus of Waters's commanding '50s group) holed up in the studio with Butterfield-Bloomfield contemporaries Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, and Stephen Stills; the result is Blues Blues Blues, the late singer-guitarist's swan song. Here's something to ponder: Waters was 54 when Fathers & Sons was recorded, the same age as Jagger when he cut his two tracks for this set. So maybe this collection should've been called Great-Grandfathers & Grandfathers. That said, Jagger's two contributions to Blues Blues Blues highlight this effort; he sounds invigorated dueting with the steady-rollin' Rogers on "Trouble No More" and gooses up Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me to Talkin'" with studied nonchalance. With other rock-era titans (Taj Mahal, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page) and blues stalwarts (Carey Bell, Johnnie Johnson, Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers drummer Ted Harvey) along to lend support, Blues Blues Blues is a star-studded sendoff to one of the blues' noble patriarchs. --Steven Stolder

I am very happy with the choice I made on this CD. I have many Blues CDs in my music collection but I listen to Jimmy Rogers All-Star most often. I never get tried of it!

5 out of 5 stars all-around excellent blues-rock disc.......2005-05-09

I tend to stay away from collaborations and stick to the original blues recordings, but I read a few good reviews of this disc and when I saw the line-up of the artists on it, I thought I'd give it a try. Let me tell you, it doesn't disappoint at all. This CD has a good drive, a strong rhythm, excellent production values and will definitely pick you up. This CD has blues classics laid on a British rock foundation. It doesn't get too much into the rock territory, though. I thought a really nice balance was achieved between blues and rock, such that the strong drive is always there, but at the same time, this is unmistakably blues, with excellent piano and harp to add to solid guitar work. Even though there are a few prominent rock guitarrists assembled in this CD, there is no guitar shoot-out here. The guitars provide a solid, pleasant, easy-to-listen backing but never take over the songs as is often the case in pure blues. This is a great CD for driving - you will never get any highway hypnosis if you have this CD on. If you've stayed away from blues but like classic/British rock, give this a try. If you are blues purist and are suspicious of this all-star line-up, give this a try. If you are looking to ease smoothly into the blues scene, give this a try. If you like country rock, give this a try. I think you can't go wrong with this disc. This a good value for the money.

Anyone put off by the "all-star" supporting cast on this tribute to the late Chicago blues legend Jimmy Rogers, which is an understandable thing based on other such offerings out there, is missing the point. The point is this is a good, solid effort throughout the disc. If you're new to the blues, this is a good, accessible intro. If you're a longtime blues aficionado, this is still strong; this is not "blues for kids". He gets help from the best: Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Taj Mahal, Robert Plant, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Jimmy D Lane, Kim Wilson on harmonica, Johnny Johnson on piano, even Stephen Stills. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the last track, John Lee Hooker's "Gonna Shoot You Right Down (Boom Boom)" is good stuff. Rogers himself sings the vocals and plays guitar on the tracks and sounds great. He passed before the album was released, but musically, he went out strong with this one. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the blues.

I've always been a bit sceptical about these superstar collaborations...they don't always work too well, and sometimes the guest stars overshadow the supposed main artist. But Jimmy Rogers and his various all-star combos manage to pull it off really well.

Sure, the arrangements are generally very similar all the way through, which does perhaps detract a little bit from an otherwise fine performance, but this is actually a very accessible and fun blues record. It doesn't just appeal to hard-core blues fans, more mainstream rock- and R&B lovers can certainly enjoy it as well, and Rogers and his guest musicians have hand-picked some real blues classics, and they generally do very well by them.

The album opens with a faithful take on Muddy Waters' "Blow Wind Blow", with excellent harmonica by the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson, and lead guitar by white blues-rock guitarist Jeff Healy.
Jimmy Rogers' own "Blues All Day Long" has Rogers sharing lead vocals with a certain Mr Eric Clapton, who also plays lead guitar. Carey Bell lends a hand on the harp.
On a gritty reading of the classic "Trouble No More", Rogers shares the lead vocals with Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards plays lead guitar.
"Bright Lights, Big City" is another Jimmy Rogers-original, with Taj Mahal behind the microphone (he is also featured on Rogers' "Ludella"), and Lowell Fulson appears along with harpist Carey Bell on Memphis Slim's "Everyday I Have The Blues".

The all-stars also do the inevitable take on Robert Johnson's "Sweet Home Chicago", with Stephen Stills (!) contributing lead guitar and co-lead vocals, and Stills pops up again on Big Maceo Merriweather's "Worried Life Blues".
Mick Jagger can't quite match Sonny Boy Williamson II on "Don't Start Me To Talkin'" (Keith Richards plays lead guitar again), but "Goin' Away Baby" is pretty well suited to his voice, and Eric Clapton and Jimmy Rogers do a fine rendition of Rogers' "That's All Right".

The album closes with an alternative rendition of John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" (retitled "Gonna Shoot You Right Down"), with - get this - Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page on guitars, and Robert Plant sharing lead vocal duties with Jimmy Rogers!
Rogers himself is in fine voice throughout, in spite of the fact that he was in his seventies at the time, and died before the album was released. The near-legendary blues- and R&B pianist Johnnie Johnson's dextrous playing belies his age. And finally, as a special treat for Hound Dog Taylor-nostalgics, the swivel chair is occupied by none other than the Houserockers' 66-year old drummer Ted Harvey.

A perfect illustration of the influence of the Blues on Rock and Roll. This is a great CD with the heavy weights of both the blues and Rock N Roll. Where else can you find Jagger, Clapton, Page, Keith Richards, Robert Plant, Stephen Stills, Taj Mahal and Jimmy Rogers together. If you like the blues, the last track itself is worth the price of the CD.

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection

Johnny Nicholas is a genius of the blues and R&B. Too bad his output, typically on small labels, is so sparse. Find "Too Many Bad Habits" on Blind Pig records as an example. He covers a variety of R&B genres here: Texas, New Orleans, hard blues, to great effect, with guest stops by Marcia Ball, Kaz Kazanoff and other stalwarts. Highly recommended.

Album Description

Chicago music buffs eagerly anticipate the second weekend of June for two reasons. First and foremost, that's when the city stages its annual Chicago Blues Festival, bringing hundreds of thousands of fans to Grant Park on the lakefront for four days of free live blues whether the weather cooperates or not (sometimes it's gorgeous, other times cold as hell). And if that weren't enough of an incentive to bring out-of-towners into our city, it's also when the Jazz Record Mart hosts its annual Blues Brunch.

Kicking off on Sunday morning prior to the final day of the Fest, the eagerly anticipated event welcomes customers from near and far to wolf down a tasty continental breakfast while digging through the JRM's massive inventory of CDs, records, DVDs, and other assorted merchandise for hidden treasures. You might even encounter a noted author or two signing copies of a new blues-themed book. And best of all, there's a free concert featuring an all-star array of Delmark's top blues artists going on the whole time.

2005's Blues Brunch was no exception to that joyous tradition. Settling in as house band was Michael Coleman & the Backbreakers, whose 2000 Delmark album Do Your Thing! no doubt turned many a listener's head as he tackled everything from stone-cold blues to Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay." Born on Chicago's West Side, Michael's dazzling guitar technique began taking shape at age eight. A stint backing Johnny Christian preceded Coleman's first big break in 1979, when he joined harp master James Cotton's combo for a seven-year stretch. Michael's crisp guitar technique and burnished vocals are heard here to fine advantage on a moody "The Sky Is Crying" that's well removed from Elmore James' original and a funk-powered rendition of Sammy Fender's "You're Going To Miss Me."

Also appearing that day (and on this CD) were Little Arthur Duncan, Lurrie Bell, Willie Kent, Bonnie Lee, Steve Freund, Zora Young, Steve Behr, Shirley Johnson, James "Taildragger" Jones, and Aaron Moore.

More than 50-years-old and still going strong, Delmark records is Chicago's oldest jazz and blues label and arguably the most important one still operating. They've released stone-cold classics in both genres over the years and currently maintain one of the best rosters of Chicago talent in the field. You can thank Bob Koester for that; a nominee for "Patron Saint of Chicago Jazz and Blues" if ever there was one. He also heads up the world's largest blues and jazz retail store: Chicago's Jazz Record Mart. Every year during the Chicago Blues Festival, Jazz Record Mart hosts the blues brunch, where members of the Delmark blues family put on a free show (and brunch!) inside the store. In 2005, Michael Coleman & the Backbreakers acted as house band, backing a variety of other Delmark artists in a great informal setting, and Blues Brunch at the Mart was recorded for posterity. Aside from the two solo piano numbers (Steve Behr and Aaron Moore), the Backbreakers back all performers giving the album a unified sound, even as the lead performers come and go. But don't think this all sounds the same. You go from an updated version of "The Sky Is Crying" by Michael Coleman to the gritty blues of Lurrie Bell to the gospel-informed sounds of Shirley Johnson to the growling, extroverted Tail Dragger. The late, great Willie Kent takes a final bow as well. From the between-song patter, one gets the sense that this isn't just a group of musicians united by their label; this is the Delmark blues family, and the patriarch is Bob Koester (who turns in a couple of priceless introductions). Part label roster sampler and part historical souvenir, Blues Brunch at the Mart is a fine snapshot of Delmark blues circa 2005.
