4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff from GP's Vaults.......2006-07-20

No need to get into GP's history. From his radio show to various collaborations to the hunt he's got to collect the obscure and the GOOD tunes, his reputation preceeds him. What we've got here is Gilles' second edition of his Trust the DJ series, which spans about 5-6 volumes. The Trust the DJ series is one of my favorite DJ series and it gives a decidedly different take to mixing and collaborating tunes.

This one's much different from GP's first one yet it starts out like you'd expect a GP album to start. You've got some dark piano work by UFO with Mark Murphy on vocals on the track "No Problem". You know his voice - more recently he's done a lot of work with Schema artists and Was-A-Bee. But you've got Gilles' quality in the dovetail into the next song, which is a neat piano and mix track by Art Konik featuring Bobby Few. The piano tone is a seamless blend - truly wonderful stuff. Then you've got a track taken straight out of Yellow music's "Bossa Tres... Jazz" series titled "Ritual" by Brandy. Tribal chant and echoes, it's everybit as moody as the first two tracks if not more. Afterwards though you get the beats kicked up some more, moving from live instrumentation/sound with effects to effects, sound/instrumentation thanks to Iz & Diz's "Mouth". I like the song... steady, quiet, smooth beat before Moonstarr's "Greed" kicks in. Talk about obscure! I could go on and on, but I'll cut it short - those are the first five songs and I was hooiked after the first two. You've got some stand-outs by Kaori, Abicah Soul, Grupo Batuque and even Trio Mocoto making a splash with some samba soul. But I thought Fragment Orchestra's "Carioca" was a bit of a head-scratcher. Not that it isn't good, I love their album, but I it was a more radical change of pace than even Trio Mocoto's song was to me.

Terrific mix and I highly recommend this album. The collection of tunes is pretty good and it's a nice follow-up to his first and a bridge into his third. The problem is that GP's "Trust the DJ" series and the others for that matter (Patrick Forge, Bob Jones, etc.) are all starting to get harder to find. Many came out from 2001-2004 and are being discontinued. But you can check out other Gilles Peterson mixes like his "Journey's By DJ's" and of course, the Worldwide series and a slew of others. He's evne done some work with Jazzanova this summer with a "Kings of Jazz" double disc set. If you dig this one though, be sure to check out K7's various "DJ Kicks" releases. Gilles Peterson doesn't have one there, but Truby Trio, DJ Cam, Thievery Corporation and loads of others do.

4 out of 5 stars They think it's all over.... it is now!!.......2004-06-02

When I first bought this collection, still in the drool mode from Gilles Peterson INC.. I hoped, indeed prayed for more of the same.. The obvious problem with this collective is that it's over all too soon! Now I can can better understand the female psyche since I'm left yearning for more! The man has talent. Of that there is no doubt, but, like streetwave records from the eighties, this type of ensemble seems to have a limited shelf life, whereas INC has remained playable and listenable over many years now. Maybe it needs another CD a al 2 disc set to complete it
