Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Like being there.......2007-07-05

Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.

5 out of 5 stars A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05

My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04

I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.

For many listeners, Little Voice will be their first exposure to this soulful singer/songwriter, but it's actually Sara Bareilles' second record. Her first, the self-released Careful Confessions, led to a deal with Epic. Since then, Bareilles has opened for Marc Broussard and Maroon 5. She's also become a bonafide soundtrack queen with tracks featured in female-centric films Girl Play, Loving Annabelle, and Monster-in-Law. As with her out-of-print debut, the UCLA grad wrote every song on her first major label recording (Little Voice features re-worked versions of several demo numbers). Like the portrait on the back of the CD--Bareilles in strappy black dress and lace-free high-tops--the piano-playing chanteuse combines the sweet with the scruffy. While her jazzy pop melodies are radio-ready, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty ("Bottle Up" and "Come Round Soon" wouldn't pass FCC muster). A little profanity here and there, however, doesn't indicate tough-girl attitude--Amy Winehouse can rest easy--so much as a desire to express herself freely. As Bareilles explains in "Love Song," "I'm trying to let you hear me as I am." (Not surprisingly, her degree is in communications.) Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alicia Keyes will find much to like here. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!.......2007-07-18

That is all that can be said for Sara Bareilles' "little voice" although when it comes to Sara neither her voice nor her talent is little. She is a Fiona Apple meets Sarah Mclachlan and add a dash of kelly clarkson (wierd combination right?) That works so well. With catchy lyrics and songs you want to dance in your swivel chair at work for, Sara Bareilles has made a huge acheivement and a even bigger impression on the Music world!

5 out of 5 stars She is good.......2007-07-18

I was net-surfing for a CD I would like to buy on Amazon, and 5 stars customer reviews cought my attention. I listened all free-sample songs and felt in love with her album. Next day I rushed to a CD store and bought this album. I can tell you all that I love every single of her song in the album "Little Voice". She is so talented artist. Lyrics and sounds perfectly harmonized and made each song so cool. She will not make all of you disappointed. Strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Emotion, intellect, attitude, and talent to spare........2007-07-17

This album shows Sara Bareilles to be one of the great storytellers of her generation of singer/songwriters. Her lyrics are universally accessible without being trite, innovative without being inane. She weaves beautiful yarns that display emotions from anger to excitement to peace to fantasy all with an overtone of hope and positive energy. Songs like "Love Song" and "Many the Miles" may make you want to dance while "Between the Lines" and "Come Round Soon" may break your heart, but all of it is uplifting, smart, and multilayered enough in lyrical and musical content that you can listen again and again, always finding new things to appreciate.

As many probably know, some of the songs on this album were featured on her earlier independent relase, Careful Confessions. I hesitate to compare the versions on Little Voice to those earlier takes, simply because I think the aesthetic is different and each version of each song seems to function in its own way. I loved the stripped down, piano-only "Love Song", and yet I think this new arrangement is tasteful and interesting and fits perfectly on the new album. The same goes for her long-time favorite "Gravity" -- I fell in love with this song in the form it took on Careful Confessions, and yet I view the new arrangement with strings here as the form this song was always meant to take, at its best. The only track I'm not crazy about is "Fairytale" -- I think the simple story of this song was better matched by the keyboard-only accompaniment from the earlier recording. But it's a small quibble on a big album from a BIG new voice in music.

Meanwhile, the songs that were NOT released in another form earlier are, with few exceptions, my favorites. "Vegas" is playful and cool, "Morningside" is full of rhythmic dynamism and attitude, "Many the Miles" lilts and grooves and invites you to sing right along.

If there is any justice or taste in the world, this woman will be a hit.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Happy and Moving.......2007-07-14

As a music fan of all different Genres, I discovered this CD from a friend who heard it was the next Vanessa Carlton. Being a fan, I ventured a listen. She has a unique style that is full of warm vocals, with a piano accompanying her as she takes you through a journey of music. I personally love the CD, and can't wait for a follow up. My favorite songs songs on the CD are "Love Song" and "Gravity." If you are fan of incredible songwriting, as well good someone who really can show off their music, This CD is just for you!

5 out of 5 stars Long time coming,,,.......2007-07-13

Sara has had the talent for many years to create someting like this, and the recording lables are behind the times as far as signing Sara is concerned. Someone as creative and talented as Sara should have had an album out 5 years ago. Never mind the delay in release, this album is the jackpot in up coming artists. The voice, the lyrics, the rhythm and the feeling all mesh into twelve tracks called "Little Voice". This album is a must have for those of you who like jazz piano, strong powerful female voices, and music you can listen to over and over without it ever getting old.

First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. The title of this CD (pronounced bal-on-SAY) refers to the equilibrium necessary for balancing her mixed, Crioulo culture that stretches from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Blessed with an angelic voice, and a knack for writing accessible compositions that are global, yet ancestral, Tavares is closer to Les Nubians than to Evora, as the title track makes clear. She's more about adapting her homeland's musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on "Poka Terra," with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on "Planeta Sukri," co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on "De Nua." With this heartfelt, autobiographical work, Sara Tavares emerges as a new dark and lovely diva for this decade. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

In Portugal this singer is very famous, you can see her face everywhere, is the star of the edge of Europe, this second album is the best this singer had made, happiness and energy, this artist is great!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious joyous and warm enfolding beauty!.......2007-03-02

Cape Verde gives us a great gift in Sara Tavares! I saw a video without sound on an airplane for Balance - I was trying to guess the tempo or the style of music, but I got caught up in watching the dancers. Then I listened to a sample online, and was sold! After I bought this album, I listened to it 7 times in a row that first day. It is lush and varied and her voice is delicate and strong. The complex rhythms and instrumentations, the gorgeous Portugese language, and the general buoyancy of this record are addictive. I listen to it at least once a day and I have had now for about a month. Support this artist and buy her work, don't download!

......I first heard Sara T on a local Public TV program, and of course she played Balance' ! I just fell in love with it, and went to listen to her at our "World Music Festival" in Chicago last October.....again I was blown away ! I finally got hold of the CD as a Christmas present ...and immediatly bought another copy for a friend of mine who lives in Wuhan, China...unfortunately, the Chinese censors allowed the CD "wrapper" to go through, but removed the CD itself. :-( ......I really like every track on this one !

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-02-09

I have followed Sara Tavares from the beginning of her career and I must say that her music is getting better with time. I recently saw her in a concert in Boston, MA and was moved to tears. Her voice is absolutly beautiful and you feel the love that she has for her country in the songs that she sings. This is an album that you will never be tired of listening to. I promise!!!

GREY GARDENS proclaimed the #1 Show of the Year by Time Magazine is preserved here in its Original Broadway Cast Recording. The show had been previously recorded following its off-Broadway premiere in the spring of 2006 (and its cast album released by PS Classics in August of 2006), but this new recording features the new songs and new cast members that were added for its Broadway transfer last fall. The new GREY GARDENS opened on Broadway on November 2, 2006, to rave reviews, led by Ben Brantley in The New York Times, who called it an experience no passionate theatergoer should miss! Starring Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole and Tony Award nominee Mary Louise Wilson, it subsequently appeared on over 25 Best of 2006 lists, including #1 Show of the Year (Time), Best Musical of the Year (USA Today, Entertainment Weekly) and Performance of the Year (The New York Times, New York) for Ms. Ebersole. In addition to the new songs and new performances, this Original Broadway Cast Recording also features an all-new 32-page full-color booklet complete with lyrics and Broadway production photos.

Amazon.com

Based on the Maysles brothers' cult 1975 documentary of the same name, this musical is an endearing—-and sometimes genuinely heartwrenching—-oddity propelled by Christine Ebersole's exceptional, for-the-history-books performance. The movie followed the kooky duo of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Little Edie Beale, as they lived with their 52 cats in a derelict East Hampton mansion. The show's first act, set in 1941, is a prologue of sorts, while the second act, set in 1973, follows the movie closely. Ebersole plays Edith in Act I (which she concludes in dazzling manner with "Will You?") and Little Edie in Act II (when Mary Louise Wilson comes in to play the mother). And while Wilson is superb, this is Ebersole's show. Technically, she is flawless—-just listen to the way she changes her voice between the acts—-but she also makes Little Edie a poignant eccentric, a lost soul stuck in a world of deluded, decaying grandeur. It all peaks in the poignant "Around the World," the show's best song and an Ebersole tour de force. Note that this recording documents the Off-Broadway production; the show transferred to Broadway in the fall of 2006 with a slightly altered first act. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The Broadway musical lives on.......2007-07-17

The soundtrack of Grey Gardens is modern, yet echoes of a Broadway heritage are present. Some parts reminded me of Sondheim and the lyrics were very clever. For one who has no chance of seeing the show, this is the next best thing and after a few playings, I can already recall the tunes and lyrics. I haven't seen the documentary upon which it is based but am an avid Kennedy-Bouvier fan. I was expecting a dark almost despairing collection of songs but was pleasantly surprised at how much light and shade is in it. What a shame it is closing so soon. I guess it doesn't have enough helicopters on stage to sustain it but I am sure it will be revived when people become aware of what an important addition it is. The characters come alive on this recording and you can almost hear them acting. A very authentic and haunting soundtrack, highly recommended to any lover of Broadway musicals.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational Musical at a time when Musicals are suffering.......2007-07-14

I saw Grey Gardens in New York last month without knowing much about it and the Documentary it is based on. By the end of the show with the audience on their feet screeming and cheering the cast lead by Christine Ebersole who plays 2 roles in the show, I became an instant fan.
The recording is one you all need to hear as it has a booklet with great pictures and all the words but the songs are the type you remember as soon as you hear them. Unfortunately I heard that the show comes to an end at the end of July so the only way you can hear this amazing cast will be by buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Savoring the cake I had .......2007-07-14

What a wonder! This cast recording of "Grey Gardens" makes each listening a recollection in tranquillity of the theater experience which becomes deeper and more enlightening. Christine Ebersole's dual roles as mother Edith Beale and Little Edie, daughter, together with Mary Louise Wilson's as the older Edith Beale spiral harmonically between love, competitiveness, shared loneliness and tragic interdependency. The cast recording immortalizes so many nuances of the musical characterizations with lyics and music that put one in mind of the flint and spirit and loneliness of Emily Dickinson's poetry. If you loved and admired the performances, you will treasure this cast recording. ( Grey Gardens - A New Musical (2006 Original Broadway Cast)

1 out of 5 stars I want to take my ears off now.......2007-06-29

Grey Gardens got good reviews? I honestly don't know why everyone is raving. I have listened to it a few times now and I don't get it. Well I get it, what it's about and what is going on but I don't get why people like it. The music kind of reminds me of Annie, but worse. Don't get me wrong, I like Annie, but it's...Annie.

You might tell me its one of those shows you have to see on stage, but if I don't even like the music why would I even want to sit through it? Please. I can't stand this cast recording the only good thing about it is Christine Ebersole.

They could have done SO much better. I get what they tried to do and I see where they could have improved. I've turned off the music now and have left it for another day, maybe on a day when I can't hear properly.

5 out of 5 stars Isn't she amazing!.......2007-06-28

I mean, can you believe her? I mean, Christine, not Edie. Well, Edie, too. And her mom. But then Christine is both of them, isn't she. I mean...

5 out of 5 stars Such a great album!.......2007-07-24

If you are hesitant about buying this album, don't be!
It is a GREAT album and definitely a must have for any indie music fan.
Tegan and Sara have grown into some really outstanding musicians/lyricist. It's inspiring to see how much they've grow since "This Business of Art" and ""If It Was You."

Songs like: Back in your head, Hop a plane, and Nineteen WILL get stuck in your head!

Songs like: The con, I was married, soil, soil, like O like H show exactly how much this band has grown musically and lyrically.

Listen to this whole album 2 times and I GUARANTEE you'll be hooked!

This album was like a breath of fresh air that I so desperately needed.
The Con is definitely worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5; .......2007-07-24

Sometimes as an indie fan, you get sort of cautious about recommending a group to new listeners. It's not that you take on an elitist persona and nobody but you can listen but rather people might get too criticizing of the music, calling it too "simplistic" and they'd get drowned out over the other popular rock bands. With the case of Tegan and Sara, 2 twin sisters from Canada, they have their fans and have been steadily increasing in popularity but without that MTV-ish quality other bands have such as Good Charlotte. After the release of the immediately-catchy album So Jealous, they're back with the Con and while the hooks aren't as pronounced as last time, it's definately a grower album and it shows maturity which is a great development to have.

The album opens with "I Was Married", a really short number and it's really subdued compared to You Wouldn't Like Me. It's a nice little ditty but I doubt it'll be anything more than a nice introduction. "Relief Next to Me" is a good rock track but it never really builds to anything although some will probably like it. However, the best track of the record and one of the group's best overall is the title track. There's just a great energy and from the vocal delivery, its dynamics and the good use of arrangements, it's definately worth a listen.

Another highlight is "Are You Ten Years Ago" which seems like a progression from So Jealous' title track. Missing guitars, it's more like T&S's techno track but I doubt it's going to be lighting up the dance floor but at least it's enjoyable in its own right. Then we get first single "Back in Your Head" which is an ironic title because it probably won't leave your head. From a simple guitar line and the chorus to its catchy "I'm not unfaithful but I'll stray" ending, it's one of the album's better tracks.

Ultimately, one problem that doesn't really plague the record but brings it down ever so slightly is that some tracks probably just seem too simple or hooks don't sound as obvious. "Burn Your Life Down" or "Like O, Like H" are enjoyable to listen to but they kind of lack that enjoyable quality that separates the tracks from stuff like the title track or the emotive "Nineteen". "Dark Come Soon" is another great song which starts with great vocal melodies until it becomes more energetic and a rock song we all know the girls can do well. However, closer track "Call it Off" doesn't really have that vulnerable quality I Can't Take It had.

Can be packaged with a DVD that shows the making of the record (and also how hilarious these girls are when they're not singing), it probably won't get the attention like Smashing Pumpkins' half ***ed comeback but it's still a solid rock record.

5 out of 5 stars Tee and Ess are the greatest........2007-07-24

This cd is good, not just good, great!!. If you thought Tee and Ess weren't mature or grown up (as on so jealous) this cd puts all that to rest. One can definetley hear that death cab for cutie guys influence all over this cd. But that is not bad, I have never been fan of death for cutie I always said they would better if they had female vocalist instead of a whiny male vocalist. Well Tegan and Sara took theyre love Dcfc and put it to good use on this new album. Theyre some crazy trip hop sounding songs (are you ten years ago) and some great songs that sound like they would be a DCFC song (you know the ones that go on and on for like 6 minutes) Well Tee and Ess Have songs like that but they are all just 2 minutes. Well, this cd is just perfect and is friggin soooooo much better than so jealous. So, buy it now!!!!!!!!!!! or download a leaked copy but one way or another obtain a copy of this wonderful cd

4 out of 5 stars Tegan and Sara mature, and blow me away in the process!.......2007-07-24

How do you follow an album like "So Jealous," an album that not only helped solidify Tegan and Sara's place as one of the decade's most notable indie pop/rock acts, but also helped define their career? How do you follow the sheer, raw enjoyment that was found over every second of such a fantastic record? For the Quin sisters, the answer is "The Con," their newest and, in my opinion, best album.

On "The Con," Tegan and Sara show that they've matured a lot since their last outing, not only musically, but lyrically as well. Whereas "So Jealous" was largely a fast-paced rock album, this one is much more balanced. There are clearly songs that sound like classic Tegan and Sara, but at the same time there are also some beautifully composed and executed songs. Almost every track on the album features multiple layers of guitars and synthesizers. "Relief Next To Me" showcases this addition quite nicely, as does "Knife Going In" and the absolutely awesome title track. "Are You Ten Years Ago" forgoes the typical drum set for an electronic drum track, and the end result is a more effective song than it would've been otherwise.

It's clear that the Quin sisters wanted to make an album that branches out from their previous sounds and explores new territory. For any artist, it is always a tricky path to walk. However, Tegan and Sara have achieved their goal flawlessly. They no longer sound like little girls but women. Every second of "The Con" showcases their maturity as musicians and as lyricists, and I couldn't be happier.

"So Jealous" was always sort of a guilty pleasure for me. As a grown male, you better believe I faced some opposition from friends when I tried to show them Tegan and Sara. No longer. "The Con" is an album that I'm not only proud to own, but I'm trilled to say that it's one of the best, most surprising records to release in 2007. If you've ever been a Tegan and Sara fan, you absolutely have to check this one out!

There's the requisite number of gorgeously melodic and deeply heartfelt songs here--the addictive "Sweet Surrender," the Hollywood-style ballad "I Love You," the sad, profound "Angel," the flat-out spectacular "Witness." McLachlan's not prolific, but this short, bittersweet album proves again that what she and producer Pierre Marchand do release is cut from the finest of cloth. --Jeff Bateman

3 out of 5 stars Great album, bad recording.......2007-06-17

I really like this album, and have the 200g LP. I'm sorry, but this CD just sounds really bad. I'm not sure if its because of the "enhanced" feature or if its just a bad transfer to CD, but I was disapointed in the sound quality, A great album like this deserves better.

5 out of 5 stars I'm crying from excitement!.......2007-06-16

I love hearing the starting point. My first Sarah McLachlan album was "Mirrorball" and it had live renditions of these beautiful classics. From there I went on to "Fumbling Toward Ecstacy" and "Surfacing." Backward, it may be, but it is no less amazing. I'm listening to "Surfacing" right now and I am experiencing goosebumps upon goosebumps as I hear a younger, lighter voice telling me that I "have the sense to recognize that I don't know how to let you go."

OH MY GOD! THIS IS SUCH AN AMAZING ALBUM AND ARTIST AND I AM YEARNING FOR A LILITH FAIR! I WILL GO ANYWHERE TO HEAR THIS BEAUTIFUL VOICE/PERSON UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect album!.......2007-05-26

How often do you buy an album and you love every song? This is one of those albums.

5 out of 5 stars Sensuous sounds from a pop siren..........2007-05-25

Sarah McLachlan's "Surfacing" is a great follow up album to "Fumbling...." The entire CD is like a journey, and its rare that entire albums can carry you through emotional highs and lows. Every song is moving in its own right and they are put together for a complete emotional journey.

An outstanding album.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly McLachlan's best........2007-04-28

'Surfacing' and 'Fumbling towards Ecstacy' are considered McLachlan's best albums and although the latter had beautiful lyrics and melodies, I consider 'Surfacing' better.

Songs like 'Building a mystery', 'Sweet Surrender' and 'Adia' have soft quitar tunes, still stay in memory, and their nostalgic ambience follows you from time to time even when you don't listen to the cd. McLachlan also has quite a unique voice and she knows how to use it.

In short, this is an album from a real musician. Undoubtedly, the best acoustic/soft rock comes from Canada and Europe.

Fans of small, pretty-voiced soprano Sarah Brightman will not be disappointed by this CD. In addition to some pop songs, Brightman sings high-flying excerpts from Orff's Carmina Burana, Puccini's "O mio babbino caro" (performed better by almost any other operatic soprano elsewhere), and "Alleluia" from Mozart's Exsultate Jubilate. One might call this a crossover disc; others might just see it as a recording featuring a pop singer with artsy aspirations. Whatever it is, Brightman's fans love her; others do not. Two duets with tenor Jose Cura remind the listener what opera singing really ought to sound like. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars make room for Sarah, there's no scarcity of room.......2007-07-22

It's a big world and artistry represents a big world within that world. There's room in all of this, thank the Creator, for Sarah Brightman and her multiple musical personae. You can't fit Brightman into a single genre and you'll only become bitter if you try.

Just enjoy the music.

It's difficult to say whether, if Sarah had not chosen to sing so many duets with male vocal stalwarts, we would have pegged her voice as made for that format. But there's no turning back now. She simply shines in concert with the likes of Bocelli and Cura. The little heart of this reviewer, at the least, soars as she does so.

Some of the ire that Brightman draws from music critics of more defined criteria is generated by her gift for self-promotion, perhaps even as much as by her cross-genre peregrinations. Alas--and I say this as a fan of opera and a lamenter of its declining claim on our Western culture--that reflects more a failing of opera to convince its potential audiences of its need to exist than of a bare excess on Brightman's part. Who is to say? And why worry about it. The world, indeed, is a very big place and music is no zero sum game. I say bring it *all* on!

Just don't bring it on without Sarah Brightman. She's a piece of the furniture now, a beguiling, surprising, melodic piece of the room's personality.

This album is nearly too good to be true. 'Just Show Me How To Love You', with José Cura, is almost overwhelming in its pathos and power. Singing in several languages, Brightman's timbre seems to change dramatically with each. One could almost swear there's more than one female lead on the cd.

There is not. Brightman has simply chosen to lend her voice to the project of making it her specialty to be eclectic. Given the artistic and cultural silos and barrios in which we confine ourselves, we could use a little more of that around here.

Meanwhile, just enjoy the music. There is most emphatically room for *this* splendid album in this big, beautiful, troubled world of ours.

5 out of 5 stars How to shake depresion.......2007-07-07

I have a bit of sadness in me at times. While driving home tonight to my shangrila in the Wyoming mountains (a 35 mile drive) I inserted this disk in my receiver and listened to Sarah's beautiful voice (and Bocheli's pretty good too). By the time I got home, no more depression.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and accessible..........2007-05-27

I love this CD - Sarah Brightman's voice is exquisite, clear and sweet, it sweeps through my head and heart, clearing out the mental/emotional debris of the day. Fewer than half of the songs are in English, but that is entirely irrelevant to me, it just focuses my attention on the purity and loveliness of her voice. Just the thing for instilling a sense of peace and profound gratitude that a sound so beautiful exists.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed.......2007-04-02

Her voice reigns supreme, but there are just too many selections on this CD in foreign languages. I knew that when I bought it, but...I still find it distracking. My solution? I bought two other Sarah CDs!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and touching..........2007-02-03

Time to say goodbye is wonderful and touching to the mind, heart, and soul. There is nothing greater than hearing a voice of an angel before you sleep our just want relaxation. Not only does this CD sound great but it is super cheap (should cost even more) and delivered 2 days after order. So listen to the CD and feel moments and experience an unbelievable feeling just tingling through you as you listen to Sarah Brightman's album, "Say Goodbye."

Grafted from McLachlan's supremely satisfying 1998 performances, Mirrorball is drawn almost equally from the multiplatinum Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. (Included also is the lovely, hard-to-come-by "I Will Remember You.") Live, a haunting ballad such as "Possession" becomes a fevered, aggressive bit of psychedelia. "Hold On" reveals new depths when performed behind the beat with morphing time signatures and driving piano. McLachlan's warmly expressive voice is still at the epicenter of her performances. She roams through these 14 songs with agile ease, riding the rails between singing for dramatic arena effect--huskily growling, airily trilling--and knowing what to play down with her sensually controlled crooning (witness such gems as Fumbling's title song and "Good Enough"). Overall, McLachlan's vocals match the heavily percussive intensity of her band and the build of her backing vocalists, producing a more spacious sound than the precise pitch rendered on her studio recordings. --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Good, but incomplete........2006-10-24

5 out of 5 stars Great recording!!.......2006-07-11

Many people (such as myself) often judge an artist by their ability to perform their own works live and Sarah McLachlan doesn't disappoint. Her voice is beautiful throughout and there's just enough crowd noise and interaction to get the "feel" of being live without getting bored with it. While I would have preferred the track list that the DVD has, I was very pleased with the quantity and quality of her selections as well as the performances themselves. If there's one song I really wish was included, it would be Ben's Song, but aside from that, you get a great overview of her great career prior to Afterglow. It has everything from uptempo Sweet Surrender and Vox to slower tracks like Angel and I Love You and even includes the fun duet with her husband and drummer Ashwin Sood "Ice Cream" though in the future he should probably stick to drumming. :)

Mirrorball ranks as one of the best albums in my collection and for a live album that's saying a lot. It is also my first choice for anyone who asks, "I want a friend to hear her stuff but I know know what I should suggest".

5 out of 5 stars Near Perfect Live-Album!.......2006-07-05

Though I'm usually not particularly fond of live-albums, this great album may very well be my favourite by Sarah McLachlan. It seems to me it has it all. Great vocals, a terrific band and some of McLachlan's very best songs; moreover the sound is as close to perfect you can expect from a live-album.

The opening song "Building a Mystery" I first heard when someone played the "Lillith Fair" dvd for me. This was the song that opened my eyes and ears for McLachlan and her music.

Among other outstanding songs "Hold on", "I Will Remember You", "Aidia" and the early song "Path of Thorns" deserve a mention. Great to hear the audience sing along on the live-favourite "Ice Cream"!

Pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter--one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to her more recent work but delightfully less polished, these folk-rock songs are surprising gems. If not for McLachlan's poignant vocals, lyrics like "Your love is better than ice cream" (on "Ice Cream") would sound childishly absurd (especially alongside deeper material like "Hold On"), but here they're given just as much respect as the weightier issues she explores. A great album to accompany your moments of introspection. --Rebecca Wallwork

For a rainy day, or a somber mood~ This cd will help you achieve a stress free listening experience

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-16

It is because of THIS ALBUM that I am a true fan of Sarah McLachlan. Her voice is angeling and her lyrics are awe-inspiring. The only grievance I have is the fact that I knew nothing about her until a few years ago. Damned radio!

I'm 21 and I've never been to a Lilith Fair....I really wish Sarah, Alanis, Sheryl, and all the rest would just get together and say "Hey, we're overdue for another Fair!" God knows I'd be the first to buy a front row ticket!

This album is seriously AMAZING and it opened the door to many more amazing albums by McLachlan. At least it did for me. This album gives me the feeling equivalent of that of a kid being showered in the best candy.
Better than Ice Cream, I tell ya!

4 out of 5 stars Good acoustic rock.......2007-04-16

'Fumbling towards ecstasy' is considered to be one of McLachlan's most popular pieces of work and along with 'Surfacing' one of her two best-selling albums.

It is a beautiful collection of rock ballads. The lyrics are good, the music is good, Sarah's voice is beautiful, in short it is a very good item to have in a collection. This is mainly material for people that are into rock/soft rock/ folk and enjoy the tunes of Leonard Cohen and/or Sheryl Crowe, although I can't say that any of the two are identical to her.

Next to his CD I would recommend Elisa's "Then Comes the Sun" (which in fact I favour a bit more).

And a small warning: this is exclusively good, relaxing acoustic material. It is not the type of music that will wake you up before storming for an endless night out. It definitely has quality but is not dance material, so don't buy it and then diss it...

5 out of 5 stars An all-time favorite.......2007-02-15

If I were going to be on a deserted island for five years and could choose to have 50 of my favorite CDs with me, I would definitely take this one along. I haven't listened to it in a while, but I am reviewing it because I want amazon to recommend more music like this to me. Sarah is a great talent, which we all know by now, and this was my first exposure to her. I wore this CD out when I first got it quite a few years ago.

4 out of 5 stars All you need to save me.......2007-07-24

The world of pop could use a lot more pop like Tegan and Sara's, and less posturing on MTV with a computerized voice.

And the identical twins show even greater variety in their fifth full-length album, three years after the Juno-nominated "So Jealous." In "The Con," they basically polish their existing guitar pop, but fill the sprightly melodies with confusing experiences and sorrowful romances.

It opens with a delicate piano ballad, framing a pretty, poignant song about the confusion and struggles of gay people. "To my heart confusion rose against/the muscles fought so long/to control against the pull of one/magnet to another magnet to another magnet," Tegan and Sara Quin sing together in shifting melodies. "I look into the mirror/for evil that just does not exist..."

Things get much more sprightly for the swirling pop of "Relief Next to Me," or the songs that it lays the groundwork for: rapid-fire dancepop, mellow piano ballads, bouncy little indie melodies, mellow acoustics, dark urgent pop stabbed with drumbeats, and energetic powerpop that doesn't let its bounciness keep it from staying intense.

Don't listen to "The Con" just once. Listen at least twice.

On the first listen you hear a rush of peppy indiepop that's fun and catchy, even when it's being serious. But the second time around you hear all the delicate interweaving of acoustics and keyboard, and the wistful, mournful look back at love and growing to maturity.

The Quin sisters play some nimble, swirling guitars, with some bass guitar beefing up songs like the rock-y "Hop A Plane." Ted Gowans also underscores some of the songs with sprightly piano pop, and he also weaves ribbons of glimmering synth through the earthy pop melodies. There are moments of messiness like "Like O, Like H," but usually they smoothly twine into a layered, solid pop melody.

They sing everything in girlish, harmonized voices, but the sisters also provide "The Con" with its bittersweet, confusing songwriting. And they've gained more maturity here as well, with lots of enigmatic lines, recollections of the past and lovelorn memories ("If I forget or God forbid die too soon/hope that you'll hear me know that I wrote to you...").

The up-and-down of lyrical romantic angst ends with the painful "Call it Off," which is all about how one of them is in love still, but knows the relationship is doomed ("You take your time coming over here/I think that's for the best/Call, break it off").

Tegan and Sara reach a new level of musical skill with "The Con" -- it's brilliant pop, but filled with heartfelt problems and uncertainty. Definitely a winner.
