Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

2 out of 5 stars Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

2 out of 5 stars More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

2 out of 5 stars Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

I bought this CD without seeing a review of it, so I felt I should help other customers out if you are, like me, flip-flopping between this and another of her CDs. Especially because this isn't an artist you hear on the radio or anything. I bought this only about six months ago and she is now one of my favorite artists; I own three other CDs by her. It's sometimes hard to find a female vocalist who's not too...nice, for lack of a better word. I feel like Holly's songs are really honest, uninhibited, what women *really* think. Besides that, it's just good music, great to sing along to. This is one of my favorite CDs though Truly She Is None Other is more conventional and may be better to start with. I think the best songs are "Just Once", "I Thought Wrong", "King of Everything" and "The Better of Me".

          Album Description

BENNECH LYNGBOE made an early mark as a singer / songwriter. It all started in 1987: After a few years of honing his talents as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, he tried out ideas with local rock bands, both as a live and a recording artist. In 1995, he released his self-financed EP "Leaves Of Fall". The entire first edition of 1000 copies sold out in Bergen music stores, and the EP enjoyed 3 weeks on the Hordaland Top Ten. The next 5 years were spent, among other things, raising a family, working on different projects and what was to become the follow-up album to the EP. In 2001, Bennech Lyngboe and Terje Eide met through a cover-band. After a while, Bennech wanted to focus on original material, and on Bennech's proposal, Terje Eide agreed to form a duo project. A 5 song demo was recorded with the assistance of Eirik Grønner and the full length album was released under the name ON THE RISE. On Melodicrock.com OTR were predicted "newcomer of the year 2003", and reached as high as #7 and #20 with the songs "Lift you up" and "Pride" (both written by Bennech) on the 2003 Award. Due to "musical indifferences", Bennech left ON THE RISE in fall 2003. After leaving, Bennech wasted no time: He took a few songs, which had already been written for the next OTR album, and made that the starting point for what eventually would become his first full length solo offering called MAIN ATTRACTION. Together with long time writing partner Marc Farrano he came up with well over a dozen new tracks. The new material had a slightly rougher edge to it, but was still melodic and catchy as hell! Finding musicians who would do the music justice wasn't too hard: Bennech brought in Zsolt Mezaros (drums) and Jan Martin Klevland (bass), who did a superb job on the OTR album. Completed by the fantastic guitarist Ronny Heimdal (D.I.M), they began recording some demos in Heimdal's studio, which aroused the interest of labels from The States and the U.K. interested. In the end Bennech decided to go with MTM Music, based in Germany, because of their overall enthusiasm and professional attitude. In 2006, Bennech is determined to promote the album to the max and will try to play live as much as possible. If you liked ON THE RISE, you will definitely enjoy MAIN ATTRACTION!. Mtm. 2006

Producer Creed Taylor was never accused of leaving any rough edges on the 1970s recordings released by his CTI and Kudu labels, many of which are now being reissued for the first time on CD by Epic/Legacy. Guitarist Grant Green's The Main Attraction, originally released in 1976, could have benefited from a little more fire and a little less precision, as the normally captivating guitarist is almost buried under a cadre of New York session musicians. The album does showcase some tasty guitar soloing from Green, but it's in short supply. Fans of Green's classic albums--whether the jazz brilliance of Solid or the white-hot funkiness of Alive--will likely be disappointed that his fluid and soulful guitar style barely pokes through the slick production of this release. While the musicians here are solid--especially flutist Herbert Laws--the material is generally uninspired, and the album features only three lackluster tunes--the funky but bloated 19-minute title track, the dated-sounding "Future Feature," and the meandering blues of "Creature." CTI, with its trademark sound of heavily produced and orchestrated albums, did produce some gems, but unfortunately this isn't one of them. --Ezra Gale

If there ever was a Grant Green cd you could afford to skip, it would probably be this one. Definitely not one of his better recordings, even if you like the funky stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Not for purists.......2004-01-09

This is a record that have divided jazz listerners for years. Either you are stuck with jazz purism or you understand that music constantly evolves. If you belong to the latter camp it might be the case that you'll appreciate this music. For what we have here is one of Green's contribution to later music styles.

In short: this is stylish jazz funk at its best.

If you grew up during the early seventies the music will remind you of the soundworld of that time. Recommended, even if it is not Green's best album. Nonetheless essential for Green collectors, of course.

1 out of 5 stars One of Grant Green's lesser efforts.......2003-02-18

            For the collector...Nice reissue.

For the jazz listining public: This is a throwaway recording...enough to feed a habit and nothing extra. Unfortunate.

5 out of 5 stars Electric Disco Funk.......2002-08-31

Actually if you like Alive, you'll love this. Grant Green blends blistering horn parts over electric guitar funk on this late seventies "gem"! The mix on this recording is great and now it's finally available on CD.

I am sure that anyone reading this review will agree with me on the fact that m. Jarre's status as a composer is beyond legend. What a pure genius. HOWEVER, I simply have to write this review to warn his fans what a huge disappointment this album is. Frist, the quality of the recording is tinny and insipid [I am not some picky audiophile, but live albums usually leave a lot to be desired]. Most important is that the arrangements and their performance by this orchestra is just totally unsatisfying. Lets face it, what we all love about Jarre is the power of his music in relationship to the films for which it was done. We want the evocative quality of the real scores, pretty much as they were for the films. You wont find it in this album[close your eyes and think of your favorite film score. You can hear it in your mind easily. now imagine hearing an album where the arrangement of it that you hear bears little relationship to what you lovingly remember. Thats the reason for my profound dissatisfaction]... So just buy the 'real' soundtracks and enjoy!

            5 out of 5 stars "Ageless Composer..Legendary Icon Extraordinaire..Jarre".......2002-01-21

Highly skilled composer one of the "Old Guard" film scoring Giants...belongs to a very exclusive club of longivity...creating some of the most brilliant scores ever to grace filmland...Mauice Jarre can write music for any story-line...from any country in the world...one who fits the bill of legendary icon in his most worthy profession...FILM COMPOSER EXTRAORDINAIRE!

Not being one so taken with LIVE RECORDINGS, but this 2-CD-Set has much merit, quality and enjoyment, all music composed and yes, conducted by MAURICE JARRE, with very capable musical organizations~ BBC Concert Orchestra,Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, how's that for a Grand Slam line up...but let's see what musical scores make the grade of "stand outs" and the ever popular "highlights".

Starting with the stand outs ~ "A PASSAGE TO INDIA"(1984), string section opens with counterpoints from percussion, giving you a sense of traveling through India, brass takes over with a main theme, gives the ten minute Suite body---"FATAL ATTRACTION" (1987), solo piano sends chills through your memories of the story line, almost textures of "Classical Jazz", blending eerie strings with muted brass joining in for substance, reminds me of some of 1940's murder mysteries with Bogart or Mitchum---"RYAN'S DAUGHTER"(1970), haunting theme with melodic overtones, give way to the percussion section, moving within the unforgettable melody always stumping the music fans, where have I heard this before?

What you've all been waiting for...the HIGHLIGHTS ~ "LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"(1962), exceptional score for this stunning film, won an Oscar for "Best Original Score 1962", percussion and brass draws you into the desert, living each passage from an unforgettable arrangement that sits high on the composers list on his achievements---but the one everyone remembers for orchestration, originality and lasting impression of "Classic Soundtracks" is "DR, ZHIVAGO"(1965), sweeping Russian melodies with poignant blends of the windwood sections, listen as the counterpoints abound reeking with passion as the love of two women for one man, the Main Theme is probably one of the most recognizable in the world.

Milan Records has given us an additonal score "SUNSHINE"(1999), a beautiful haunting score that has Jarre's signature in place, the chorus gives off a heavenly sound of "Pure Harmony", counter balanced by the orchestration, gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Don't Be The Fool Anymore, So BUY IT!.......2003-09-13

This was the first release from Main Attraction, and it consists of mainly 50s and 60s covers from The Tokens "Lion Sleeps Tonight," from James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," some slight diversity there. The group also covers Sam Cooke's "You Send Me," and The Impressions "It's All Right," into a very popular at the time style New Jack Swing, which is very interesting to hear, nothing like a new jack cover. Ben Goldfarb's mixing is wonderful, and John Goforth and Denny Goodhew get down on the sax on a couple numbers, while Julian Priester's horn arrangements are perfect. This should appeal not only to oldie lovers but also to Urban, Adult Contemporary, and New Jack Swing fans as well, the brillant effort from Main Attraction is more soulful and sweet then anything After 7 or Al B. Sure did.
