This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

A glorious sharing.......2003-12-14

Although listed as being by "various artists", these two discs were recorded in 1996 and 1997, respectively, by the monks and choirboys of Downside Abbey and School (near Bath, in England).

The discs represents a sharing with the rest of the world of the music which brings together the two communities, of monks and schoolboys, at masses in the Abbey.

The quality of the recording on disc 1 is superior to that on the later disc, but both convey the beauty and simplicity of the religious music and plainsong which lie at the heart of Benedictine communities. You do not have to be religious, yourself, to enjoy the sense of peace and serenity conveyed by the pieces. Relax and let the sound wash over you.

The title, "Gregorian Chillout", tends to belittle the faith which underlies the music, but do not let this put you off. Buy these and enjoy them to their fullest. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent performance (not everybody will like this music).......2000-06-13

Henry Purcell is regarded as the most gifted of England composers of all times. His genius reveals in all his music - ceremonial, operas, semi-operas, secular songs, religious and instrumental. This series of King conducting Purcell's anthems and services follows up the success of King's odes and welcome songs recordings. While all the performances in this series are excellent it's the quality of the music that counts and number 7 of this series arguably includes the best music. The booklet enclosed with King's notes is also very illuminating. The rating of four stars and not five is because not all admirers of purcell will enjoy this music as much as they enjoy his operas, semi-operas and wellcome songs as it's more on the melancholic side.

Stick to No-Man and Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson........2006-06-03

This is some of the most boring music I have heard from an otherwise incredible musician named Steven Wilson. There is no substance at all in this "music", whereas Porcupine Tree has catchy choruses, rocking tunes, great ballads, and Wilson's GODLY voice, and No-Man has infectious beats and the absolutely soothing voice of Tim Bowness. This CD is not worth your money. Anybody who gives this CD above 3 stars must buy a new set of ears. Stick to No-Man and Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson.

Pure Rubbish.......2006-04-05

First of all I am an avid Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree fan, so bear with me on this one. If you want to throw away your hard earned money(as I did)then buy this CD. I have never in my life heard anything this bad dressed up as ambient mood music. Quite frankly it's crap and SW ought to be ashamed to have his name assiciated with. It's just noise. No structure, no texture, no hooks, no melody, absolutly no redeeming quality whatsoever. Whoever gave it four stars must be getting a portion of the money poor saps like me spent thinking they were getting something worth listening to. I threw away the CD and kept the case. Now that I can use.

Drones, bleeps, a Robert Fripp sample - late night snooze.......2006-03-11

Both this one and the other BC disc dealing with alleged "ghost voices" are late night fodder for radio programs such as John Di Liberto's stuff on "Stars End". For all of Wilson's compelling work in Porcupine Tree, these releases and the No Man discs are strictly vanity projects for the completists. They certainly don't have the tension and release of the best of Eno's stuff or from other projects like Channel Light Vessel.
There's nothing really wrong with this stuff, but having stopped smoking pot 25 years ago, I tend to be less impressed. However, were I to be suffering through an interminable night of insomnia, I'd slap this baby right into the disc player, pick up some Willard Quine and I'm sure happy land would follow.
The selling point here, however, are the Fripp samples - that ascending sustain that is Fripp's trademark resounds at peak moments, as it always has, to raise the emotional investment in this music. I feel as though I could likely guess from whence these ascensions were sampled, but if you are familiar with anything like what he did on the Roches' "Losing True", you'll have the idea.
Worth purchasing? That's up to you. I'm heading back to sleep.

What?! No One Else Knows This Band?.......2004-06-18

If you like Porcupine Tree's more ambient and spacious work, you should really like this album. It features the headman and vocalist of Porcupine Tree. Although he provides no vocals on this one, mmostly due to the fact that all of these songs are instrumentals. Now if you're looking for something thats 2 to 3 minutes in length, and conists of a set up like verse chorus, verse chorus Chorus. GO SOMEWHERE Else. This band has no time for ignorant pop lovers. This is very spacious, ambient, spacy, sometimes psychedlicy, electro-y rock. Bass Communion Pwowns you like no tommorow. Because tomorrow's gone (as Porcupine Tree would say).

Yet,another one of Porcupine Tree's main man Steve Wilson's side projects.He's got several,so I hear,like the three releases by Incredible Expanding Mindf**k(check them out).This is my first ever listen to Bass Communion and I like what I hear. In my humble opinion,it's best described as 'ambient progressive'. Tracks that make this import title a true keeper are the spaced out "Advert", "16 Second Swarm" and the thirteen minute, atmospheric "Wide Open Killingfield". Also liked the bonus two-track EP, but I don't understand why they simply couldn't tag those songs onto the one CD. Good release to have,just the same. Might appeal to fans of Flower Kings, Translantic, No Man and Flying Saucer Attack.

Underrated, yet excellent.......2002-11-12

I think this is a brilliant record. Not to over rate the record but it is very good. Not many ambient music makers lately have made an album like this one. I own the new 2002 version w an extra track but the rest is the same.

Trippy project from Steve Wilson.......2001-11-01

Though an avid admirer of Porcupine Tree [S.Wilson`s brainchild],Bass Communion was unlike anything I expected.
The music can best be described as a sonic experiment of ambient nature. Although interesting,the tracks a very long and sleep inducing. I recommend this for; insomniacs,space travellers and curious potheads. I imagine this music to be interesting after you have done some time in an isolation tank, things would get weird quick.
No offense to S.Wilson`s brilliance. If you really want to hear his talents at work check out Porcupine Tree esp;``Lightbulb Sun``,``Sky Moves Sideways``and``Recordings``.

Christian does a very good job of describing this album, so I just wanted to point out the one thing he missed - this is BC's second album. The first one, also eponymous, was released a couple of years ago on the Third Stone label, STONE 036CD, and is now quiet difficult to obtain.
