Album Details

Containing Some of the Best Songs He's Written, Southern Nights is Allen Toussaint's 1975 "Swing for the Fences" Attempt at a Full-out Masterpiece. Somewhat of a Concept Album, with Reoccurring Instrumental Themes Usually Based on the Title Track Popping Up Between Songs, "Southern Nights" Spawned at Least Two Hits for Other Artists.

His best album, an overlooked classic.......2007-04-13

I don't give 5 stars lightly. I agree with everything that the first reviewer has said. Long admired by music industry insiders, Allen Toussaint is a major American talent. If you don't know who he is, he produced and wrote many hits for New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey, LaBelle, and others, and has worked as an arranger for Robert Palmer, The Band and Paul McCartney, to name a few. This album is the ultimate Allen Toussaint -- great songs, great arrangments and a thematic quality makes it one whole piece of work. This is helped along by the fine New Orleans musicians who play on the recording, including members of the Meters and the great Gary Brown on sax. This record did spawn hits for other artists, "Southern Nights" and "What Do You Want The Girl To Do" where two songs that became very successful cover versions for Glen Campbell, Boz Skaggs and Bonnie Raitt. While not a killer singer, Toussaint's vocals are warm, soulful and intimate, and I've loved this record since it first came out in the mid-70s.

went to see him this year at a benifit concert in New Orleans at Harrahs in an intimate setting and Elvis Costello (who i dont like anymore since he referred to Ray Charles using the "N" word) showed up to do a couple numbers with him)-- Mr. Tousaint is as great now as he was in the 1950's, 60's 70's,80's,90's -- he is as much a part of New Orleans Music as anyone including Louie, Professor Longhair, Fats Dominio and the list can go on and on and on.--- One of the greatest Albums ever made

I enjoyed this CD very much. There was one song I had been looking for since its release in 1981. Thinking that the song was recorded by Frankie Beverly & Maze, I never found it until now. Thank you. This song was called "What Ever Turns You On."

Boogie Nights..........2007-06-04

An 'okay' collection from Heatwave. Don't misunderstand me, at one time, they were my favorite group, they could do no wrong in my eyes. It just that this is just another re-hash, and frankly, there's nothing new on this, other than "Razzle Dazzle." This just begs the question, "Where are the albums 'Hot Property' and 'Candles'?" What are they waiting for? Oh well, I guess I can dream 'til then!! Five stars for Heatwave, three stars for this collection!!

Looking at the songlist, I would say it looks good, but could be a lot better! However, they did put "Razzle Dazzle" on the cd, probably just to take up space, but if I must say, "Razzle Dazzle" is a sleeper of a song. Enjoy the cd, but like I said, they could have done better.

tight Jams.......2006-05-15

I've always dug me some Heatwave be it with the Up-tempo Jams or the Classic Slow Jams they always brought it. the arrangements&overall Production are on point.alot of these tracks are still banging as we speak. some timeless material here that never plays out.trademark Vocals&those smooth in the Pocket Grooves.

very funky.......2005-11-01

before billy ocean turned into pop dimension he could easily groove with the touch of fender rhodes, sleek guitar rhythms, taunted bass lines, prophet claps... aside from uplifting dancefloor burners there are nice slow jams that you would like to hear too.. It was originally released by epic records in february of 1981 and some of the songs were remake taken from his previous album 'City Limit' therefore by the late 80's he recorded all the new songs and remakes for 'Nights'. check out the gentle groove on 'whatever turns you on', 'dont say stop' is my favourite cut here. although this version of 'stay the night' is kinda weak go for the 'city limit' version which is more funkier and hard-hitting. overall it's a highly recommended album if you'd like to dig his early works..

Oh How....Different?.......2004-05-30

I grew up with the 'Suddenly' era Billy Ocean and "Carribean
Queen" and all that but I had NO IDEA he had any stake in the
early 80's R&B/funk world.But that's what you'll be getting
if you buy THIS album;synthesized,uptempo funk grooves with alot
Billy's deep voice veering in and out.It's a whole other side of
Ocean-one that sadly got lost as he gained more fame as a light
pop singer a few years later.But at this stage he coulda'
been IT.Oh well!

Where's Billy????.......2003-02-28

Now this is when Billy Ocean was "Billy Ocean". When he had his stint at Epic/Columbia he displayed a new era of 80's soul, along with Loose Ends, Junior, and Imagination, all who were also from overseas but you could never tell. This album and his second long lost out of print "Inner Feelings" are definite classics. This one was out of print for awhile but there are few copies floating around. If you find "Inner Feelings", which is only on vinyl as far as i know it is a keeper, because soon after is when he signed to Jive/RCA and became more "Commercial" with "Carribean Queen", "Suddenly" etc. Not to say that those songs were not good, and yes they did give him grounbreaking attention. But, his first two albums show us a side that few of us have never seen or heard before. Its a definite listen.

Solid Jams.......2002-07-07

before Billy Ocean became Pop Factory product He had some Jams&this Album showcases the Grooves in His Music.the title cut is a Jam that easily beats the Material He was forced into doing to becoming a Cross-Over Artist in the States.if you can get your hands on His earlier Stuff you will be Bumping to His Jams.a far cry from what He was forced into Becoming.

The sond Shroomz is a very strange song, but very interesting. He is a verygreat rapper, one of the best, i think. He has a talent that most don't have. But, he is a very perverted person as in the song Pussy Pop. I would buy the CD if you dont already have it
