Customer Reviews:
Not Bad Nu-Bossa.......2007-03-07
Scenario had a little franchise of their own here with the Bosas N Go series. It spans 4 volumes now with the last one released just last year. One of the highglights to this series is that it usually features mostly original acts with songs that you won't see on other albums. There are a few reasons for that, however. For starters, in the older volumes, some of the acts weren't that original, copying the melodies of some songs... like the intro to Janice's "Caipirinha", Isabella Antenna's "Antenna" mixed with Batu's "Seasons of my Mind" and several others.
But this one's a bit better... or maybe it's that I just haven't heard most of the songs sampled (or haven't heard this one enough to pick it apart!). It starts out promising with "Vou Voltar" by Ludmilla and it's rather nice. A little jazzy, nice instrumentation and a light bossa highlighted by the guitar. "Little Rose" follows, and while it wasn't the most captivating song to me, it was nice enough. "Esse Samba" shows what direction Ludmilla clearly prefers - a more jazzed up affair with an intimate piano. I actually liked her works here. S-Tone Inc's song was a little of a head-scratcher - not because it lacked quality. But because it's a more charged up track in comparison to the laid back vibe the majority of songs here portray. Les Hommes "Vista Do Mar" was a good decision though - very smooth. But old habits die hard. Mono Deluxe comes in with "The Loungin' Style" and immediately I recognized the Easy Access Orchestra's trademark baseline repeated over and over again from EAO's remix to King Kooba's "Fooling Myself", a lounge masterpiece. And on "Apaixonado", I recognize the Rosalia De Souza/Nicola Conte bossa line from their rendition of "Canta Do Ossanha".
The verdict? Well, this isn't so bad. It's about on par with the second volume and the individual acts featured exclusively here have grown and become more interesting. But it's still not necessarily at the top of the class and has some ways to go before catching the likes of fellow Italian labels Ishtar/Schema or Irma. Break & Bossa's still a ground-breaking franchise and the Sister Bossa series has also gotten pretty good again. Still, this is a nice little sampler of tunes that you can put into the background & if you like it, know that they came out with a fourth one.
