Pure Pop Brilliance.......2007-07-01

I'll never forget the first time I heard 4 ever 2 gether over the headphones of my walkman while i sat on the bus on my way to work all those years ago. I ran out right away and bought the Cassette, and at the time, I had no idea how many times I would listen to this Cd and what it would do to me. I still listen to it often, it is simply pure pop brilliance! Oh, and the lyrics are catchy too.

2002 U.S. Reissue Is The Same As The U.K. 1998 Reissue And It Sounds Better Than The 2004 'Deluxe Edition' Remaster!.......2007-06-28

After doing some research I discovered that the U.S. 2002 digitally remastered reissue of ABC's classic 1982 'The Lexicon Of Love' album is the exact same as the U.K. 1998 digitally remastered issue. I own the U.S. release, which has a 1982 and 1998 Mercury Records Ltd. (London) copyright. However, the disc is manufactured by Island Def Jam in New York.

So what does this mean for the fans? Those hoping for a newly remastered 2002 issue won't find it here, yet that doesn't matter because the digital remastering here is simply the best I've heard for this album as a whole. After browsing through my ABC collection and comparing sound quality on a number of the releases I was surprised to hear that this 1998 digital remaster sounds better than any other ABC release, with the exception of the album material on the 2004 'Ultimate Collection' 3-disc set from Universal Netherlands ("All Of My Heart" being the lone exception).

Additionally, the sound quality presented here is MUCH better than the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' of the album. It's a shame I have to say that because the 2004 edition has a bunch more goodies on it. Usually I find more recent remasters sounding better than remasters from the late 90's, but this is simply not the case here. The difference is the result of different mastering engineers. This 1998 release was remastered by Dick Beetham at Tape to Tape. The 2004 'Deluxe Edition' was remastered by Gary Moore. It's a shame Univeral didn't throw the 2004 edition back at Dick again because he did a nearly flawless job.

In my review of the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' I stated how the songs sound flat by today's audio standards. This is simply not the case here. The songs are rich, full, wide, and clean. Listen to those drums at 3:18 in '4 Ever 2 Gether' and it's clear that this one is the winner! Honestly, I had completely forgot how well this album sounded after being stuck on the 2004 'Deluxe Edition' for a few years now.

"All Of My Heart" sounds the best here out of any ABC CD I've heard. I mentioned the harsh sound in the 2004 'Ultimate Collection' review. It sounds rather flat in the 2001/2002 'The Very Best Of' and of course 2004 'Deluxe Edition', but it's just right here! Perfect dynamics, presentation, and range. Moreover, unlike the 'Deluxe Edition', "The Look Of Love (Part IV)" does not annoyingly fade out early and sound cut off. It's presented completely here and in better sound, to top it off!

Usually, I'm not one to go back to late 90's remasters and give solid reviews. This is, of course, one of a few examples in which I can actually praise an earlier remaster over a more recent one. It's a shame that Universal didn't bother reissuing this album as a stand alone disc in 2005 with the other album remasters, perhaps this time including extra bonus tracks beyond the 1 presented here, such as the 12" of "The Look Of Love", which seems to be skipped on several ABC collections.

As for the album itself, read the reviews here. It's a classic! I need not explain any further. This album was originally released on June 25, 1982. Twenty-five years later, it still sounds as striking and fresh as it did when originally released. Do yourself a favor and add this crisp remaster to your collection, if you haven't already.

Here it is: ABC's "The Lexicon Of Love." It's my all-time favorite album. I remember buying this with my allowance in my early teens (during those ancient vinyl years) and falling in love with it. I played it so much, the grooves started to turn a bit white. I always had a weakness for disco, new wave and strings and this album had it all. Trevor Horn is a producer that's so unique and creative. The man inspires me. Then there is, of course, the very talented band. What can I say? They had some serious chops!
This Deluxe Edition is wonderful! The only thing I regret about it is that it doesn't include the 12-inch mix of "The Look Of Love."
Nonetheless, get this cd. It's a true blue classic!

ABC's the Lexicon of Love is the ultimate Valentine's Day album, a pop masterpiece, a thinking (and pretty funny) man's disco party. That man is lead singer Martin Fry -- a silver-tongued devil in a gold lame suit.

What makes the CD so great is the juxtaposition of the glittering sheen of the music with Fry's head-spinningly witty, sarcastic, and self-aware lyrics. "More puns and allusions than Elvis Costello had managed in a career," says Spin Magazine in its Alternative Record Guide, and it's no overstatement.

Here's some of the best quotes on a CD full of em:

1. "If you judge a book by its cover/then you judge the look by the lover."

2. "Look but don't touch in paradise/Don't let them catch you damaging the merchandise."

3. "Everything is temporary, written on that stand/Looking for the girl who meets supply with demand."

4. "I stuck a marriage proposal in the waste disposal."

5. "No I won't be told, there's a crock of gold/at the end of the rainbow. All the pleasure and pain, sunshine and rain/might make this love grow."

6. "Skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers."

7. "I get sales talk from sales assistants/When all I want to do, girl, is lower your resistance."

8. "When she's gone all I've got to learn/is the law of diminishing returns."

9. "The 12 disciples might kiss and tell/But you can tell me much more than they can."

10. "Then I say I love you, foul the situation/Hey, girl, I thought we were the right combination."

Woo-hoo!

At first blush, the thing that stands out is the music, specifically Trevor Horn's impeccable production. Xylophones, glockenspiels, synths, a string section, cash registers, and probably a couple of kitchen sinks, are the order of the day.

The smooth production is probably what got ABC (mistakenly) lumped in with Spandau Ballet and Wang Chung back in the day, which was maybe part of the joke. Fry's bitchy Vegas-singer-with-a-brain shtick points to satire, but it says something about the quality of the writing that these songs also pack an emotional wallop.

The big hits here are the Look of Love and Poison Arrow, great songs both, but for my money the overblown orchestrations on All of My Heart, the happy ca-ching of the cash registers on Date Stamp, the opening fanfare of Show Me, and (of course) the Mr. Roboto intro ("Evil!") on 4 Ever 2 Gether" make these tracks equally deserving of your time.

ABC has never had an album as good as this one, but fans should check out Be Near Me, Between You and Me, Ocean Blue, How to be a Millionaire, and 15-Storey Halo (on the underrated How to be a Zillionaire CD), When Smokey Sings (the band's tribute to Smokey Robinson from the Alphabet City CD), and That Was Then, but This is Now (from the otherwise awful Beauty Stab CD).

If you like this CD, I also recommend the Divine Comedy's "Casanova" and the Magnetic Fields' "69 Love Songs."

pleasing bass lines hop skip and jump all over this disc. drums and synthesizers are cornerstones. the singer has a wonderful voice, full of emotion and emphasis. great songs, too. and great production. pure pop bliss.

Great Album.......2007-02-06

What else can i say about this album that hasn't already been said brilliant piece of music, this remaster has improved sound over the last remaster.

Unprecedented, but not the first!.......2004-12-11

Before I even knew what a "trevor horn" was, i was in awe of this album and Frankie's "Pleasuredome" within the same year. "Lexicon" set the standard for my pop/rock ears. It was truly the very first album i would obsessively listen to over and over without skipping a single track and all the while wondering "Why aren't all albums made this way??". Later, I would discover "Avalon" by Roxy Music (which actually came first, but not to my ears). ABC's original killer lineup (Fry, White, Singleton, Lickley, and, most of all, Palmer) had hammered out (with Horn) the ulitmate distillation of what HAD been great 70*s music to form the pinnacle of New Romanticism for the 80*s.

The songs are an endless stream of witty couplets, like Satan himself had possesed your average dictionary of qoutations and was using it to sing the evils of love! The lowbrow take on highbrow lyricism all the while laughs at it's own haughty pretension, and Fry's ever-straining (though succeeding!) vocal delivery is emotive and leavening all at once! Tessa Niles (then Webb) made her mark as the angel of the New Romantic bands with her cameo parts here. Duran Duran would allude to her spots on Lexicon with their "Come Undone" single (that record seeming to mourn a bygone era).

Trevor Horn (I know what one is now!) assembled the core army that would march forth as ZTT (and the before-mentioned Frankie) around this effort, and the collective genius of all concerned, coupled with an exacting attention to recorded sonics (predicting the digital era to come...) would rise to heights unimagined. This record is every bit as engaging and lofty as any classical symphony or suite. Horn even managed to "tart up' and incorporate a track produced by someone else (Steve Brown on "Tears Are Not Enough") seemlessly. Fortunately for listeners, the original 7 inch single version is here for comparison. Also of note is the FABULOUS jazz mix of "Poison Arrow" (which i long treasured on vinyl) that proves Trevor's chops as an ombudsman arranger and mixer! Some of you may like to know that a "scratch" mix of 'Look of Love" is out there (part 5), it has it's moments, really, but I can see why it missed the cut here...

ABC's graphic sensibility PRE dated Pet Shop Boys and was in no small measure responsible for their success first time out. The Deluxe version exquistitely re-tailors the original graphics (Universal/Polygram in-house art has long been a leader in tasteful treatments, even when assigning such work to outside firms). Lots of Goodies for the eyeballs here, as well. The Live and Demo cuts are great, academically speaking. I only wish disc one had incorporated "overture" and "look parts 2 and 3" and left all else to disc two, it would have been less jarring. The sound has a certain "punched and compressed" quality in the percussion parts that was (like vintage Motown singles) a big part of it's vinyl success. It has obviously been decided to not mess with perfection in the audio approach, and the oddness of this approach is preserved (wise choice in my book!).

I sincerely hope this album is one day given the 5.1 surround mix it so desperately deserves. It would definitely pose a challenge to Mr. Horn, and he may well feel it is too risky to mess with perfection. This album deserves that extra detail every bit as much as Roxy's "Avalon" did, and "Avalon" succeeded as such, so please Trevor, give a try for the old guard! THANK GOD THIS ALBUM HAS GOTTEN IT'S DUE HONOR AT LAST! You will proudly own the very best if you buy it, even the original vanity "Neutron" label is used! Purveyors of Supa-Fine Product, indeed!

REMASTERED AGAIN another happy return.......2004-11-27

When I found out the Deluxe Edition series was adding The Lexicon Of Love to their catalog, I was very excited. Since there was already a remaster, I was more interested in the bonus tracks. Well, both discs are brilliant. This time, The Lexicon Of Love was truly remastered - it sounds better than the first round - you can tell immediately on Show Me. It was a much better job from the master.

The bonus stuff is worth it's weight in gold. The demos are my favorite as the songs are stripped down an a little undeveloped. It's cool to hear the genesis of song without the added production

I have a live show from Germany (same tour) which is excellent. This one is from the Hammersmith 1982. If you have not heard the full live set from this tour - you are in for complete treat. Very classy.

OH - pretty important if you want to save some cash. I bought mine from Amazon UK. For everything, the price was under $30.00. For some reason, our Amazon could not get the price lower. So, go there and save $10.00

I just want to say that I think Lexicon's "Youth is Yours" is a must buy. Sure, their lyrics aren't all abstract and complex, but who cares? Most underground hiphop is sooooo boring anyway. Oak and Nick Fury are fun and have dope delivery's like the great early 90's mc's and the beats are top notch. If you're sick of the bling bling, and sick of boring underground hiphop, this CD is for you. I think true music fans can really appreciate this. It's like the Beastie Boys combined with A Tribe Called Quest. Screw the haters.

great production, good feel, lyrics ARE NOT too simplistic and uninspired... great it you don't really care about multi syllabolic and complex wordplay. Has a great feel to it and is a fun listen. (cool to listen to at your mates getting pissed before your hit the town)

I don't expect this review to get great ratings by other customers/fans, because it comes as an affront to them, but here goes. I personally think the CD is average, but I think I had some preconceptions beforehand. The tracks are unique and original, but most are uninspiring. I'd urge any buyer to really listen to the sample tracks (and the lyrics) more than a few times before purchasing it.

The group reminds me a lot of the Beastie Boys in terms of skill and old school style so if you like that, it's good to go with a nice indie/party sound.

However, I was looking for something with a more freestyling, wordplay, lyrical arrangement and better, overall rhyming ability. The AA, BB, CC rhyme pattern just gets too old over every track, little lyrical dexterity, combined with so many story telling tracks, it just got too old too quickly. There just doesn't seem to be anything fresh or inspiring about the album. I've tried about 5 times and could not get through a whole sittiing of the album. I honestly wish I could see what others are saying about the album, but if you listen to a lot of hip hop, there are plenty of other indie albums that are much more worth your money than this one.

You can never go over-the-top enough!.......2005-08-17

The New Romantic movement gave us many memorable artists, but perhaps none left as stylish and indelible a mark as Sheffield's ABC. The band first hit the U.K. charts with "Tears Are Not Enough" on their own Neutron label. Interest in the single lands them a deal with a major label and Trevor Horn (Yes, Art of Noise) agrees to produce their first full length recording. The end result "Lexicon of Love" is one of the quintessential New Romantic recordings. A lush paean to love it summons echoes of Roxy Music, but at the same was very original and unique. Fronted by vocalist extraordinaire Martin Fry the crack four man group was ably augmented by Horn's studio wizardry. Equal parts intelligence, flamboyance and swagger Fry commands the show and his lyrics reflect a mixture of ecstasy and agony, treachery and regret, irony and sorrow. Hearing the original demo of "Tears..." you can hear the genesis of what would evolve under the benevolent tutelage of Trevor Horn. Who made who is obvious.

The curtain lifts on with the dramatic opener "Show Me" with Fry soaring to a wonderful falsetto at points amid a lush orchestrated backdrop, the perfect set up for "Poison Arrow," perhaps one of their best tracks. The video of "Poison Arrow" is perhaps most indelibly etched in people's memories for the band in white ties and Martin cavorting in the infamous gold lamé suit with an 80s beauty. On the pulsating track the wonderful Tessa Niles plays vocal foil to Martin who posits "I thought you loved me, but it seems you don't care" to which Tessa counters "I care enough to know I can never love you" to a crescendo of drums. The song is absolute ecstasy and my all-time favorite. "Many Happy Returns" starts off with a spoken into and then rapidly picks up tempo and actually points the direction ABC would go with the following release "Beauty Stab." Fry's lyrics and the raw emotionalism of the song is quite striking and it gives yet another chance to show off his astonishing falsetto. "Many Happy Returns" glides into the rambunctious "Tears Are Not Enough" which kicks off with Martin's highest falsetto. The track crackles with life recalling Haircut 100 (a contemporary New Romantic band) with its lively horns and prominent bass line. While it bears a passing resemblance to the demo version it's clear that Trevor Horn is the mastermind pumping life and energy into the recording. Heavy strings and glockenspiel (or is it fairlight?) open "Valentines Day" with Martin pushing his vocals to their very limits building to a crescendo where Martin implies "I'd be a Millionaire; I'd be a Fred Astaire." There's nowhere to go but the first single that broke ABC in the USA, "Look of Love (Part One)" which summons up images of the dapper band from their music video. Vocally this is a showcase for Martin's full range, from low spoken asides and growls up to his falsetto. Musically its ABCs absolute zenith with full orchestration and once its over its hard to imagine where you could go from such ecstasy, but there's more cards up Martin's sleeve. "Date Stamp" is pure Trevor at the intro pointing at things to come for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Propaganda, and others. Martin and Tessa heat things up in what is practically a duet against a thumping bass line. What follows is perhaps one of my favorite track "All of My Heart" a profoundly felt song on love, loss, and regret reflected in Martin's vulnerable and heartfelt vocals. For me the recording could and should have ended here as there's no way you could top the sentiments and raw emotionality in "All of My Heart." Recalling not so much "Manifesto" or "Flesh and Blood" era Roxy Music as it does "Avalon" it would be the obvious direction for ABC to continue. Instead things resume with "4 Ever 2 Gether" a slight tune with a rather creepy intro and eerie backing track that hints somewhat at where they would go with "Beauty Stab." The rather fitting coda to it all is the closing blast of "Look of Love (Part Two)."

ABC epitomized everything great about the New Romantics and this recording perfectly encapsulates 1982 and that era. ABC were on the cutting edge with sumptuous videos and sterling production. From "Lexicon..." they moved to the perceived misstep of "Beauty Stab" from which they would recover. "Lexicon..." has nary a dull track and will have you enthralled from start to finish. A must for any fan of 80s or New Romantic music!

80's landmark from Martin Fry & co........2001-07-27

This is quite simply one of the landmark albums of the 80's and one which sounds as fresh today as when it first released in 1982. I first heard ABC through the single Tears Are Not Enough, I have to say that I wasn't all that impressed. The next couple of singles though (Poison Arrow, The Look Of Love & All Of My Heart) hooked me on this band, which sounded like no other at this time. Most albums are essentially the singles with a lot of fillers on (some good, others not so good), this album quite simply keeps up the high standard all the way through - I've even re-evaluated Tears Are Not Enough.

There a number of reasons why this album is regarded so highly. You can start with Martin Frys exquisite lyrical genius, oozing romanticism (not the New kind either). You can add the lush strings of Anne Dudley (Art Of Noise) into the mix. You can then finish off with a polished production by Trevor Horn, although you also can't forget the gorgeous backing vocals by Tessa Webb.

Outstanding tracks on an outstanding album : Valentine's Day, The Look Of Love (the breathy spoken refrain), All Of My Heart. This album was re-released with some extra tracks on a couple of years ago. Don't even think about it, just get this one. The Lexicon Of Love is too perfect to be heard in any other form, all you need is the original 10 tracks and a stereo you can turn up fairly loud. This is an album for all music lovers transcending most genres with its sheer gorgeousness.

A favourite album.......2001-06-24

This is fun, fey, dramatic, pop-inflected pure fun. The love theme infuses the album with continuity, but the stronger theme here is great lyrics "...for all the lips I shoulda kissed, I'd be a millionaire/I'd be a Fred Astaire" and great English light new-wave in the romantic mode. Similar to Scritti Politti in some ways, but less detached and equally wry. Like The Human League, but more pop (and less dance) minded. The "Look of Love" is a crowning achievement of synth-pop. Highly Recommended.

too bad this was their first album as they were never able to pull it together quite as well.

i learned more about the band's troubles afterwards, but when i first heard this album - shortly after it was released - i was torn between playing it over and over again and excited to hear what they would do next.

the album comes close to a perfect one. each track smoothly moving into the next. the songs holding up as singles or as part of a greater work.

hard to pick out a favorite song as they all have merit. i find myself humming many of the tunes. some personal faves include "date stamp", "tears are not enough", "the look of love". i realize as i type this, what a silly exercise this is - i may as well list the entire track list!

The best pop album ever.......2001-04-21

I became an ABC fan in '87, right out of high school. This was the first ABC record I got. What a masterpiece. Every song is wonderful, but the lyrics are even better. Rarely ever have I seen such talent when it comes to writing. Every now and then I still listen to the Lexicon of Love. True, none of the following ABC albums could ever match this one, however Alphabet City came very close. I also still like a good portion of Abracadabra (was that ever released in the States?) I know live in the US and have not given up hope to see Martin live.

I was not sure if I was going to like yet another cd filled up with samples / remixes of "From Dusk Till Dawn" - especially considering that this is the artists' own cd mix. I love the song - but its a little over-exposed at the moment. Anyway, given that this is the only cd I have listened to 4 times in a row, I can honestly say that 5 stars isn't enough. The whole cd is like a vastly improved version of the ok-to-goodish Trendroid Transport 6 (cd1), except with better track selection. Tracks 3 (Chant for Life) and 10 stand out. Own it, and listen to it "All night....all night..."

I just have to say this single is a masterpiece at work! Not since Sven Vath have I heard such a great collection of songs that motive, captivate, and make you want to dance(The title track appears twice as an edit and the full-length versions)!

I heard "My Lexicon" (and his other track "Sacred) on the Sasha GU Ibiza CD where I was blown away by this rising Dutch DJ/Producer. The song on this has several elements that I have always loved: melody, emotion, and great basslines. I love the current direction of progressive house/trance. It has evolved into an surreal identity and not just some redundant, mindless beats.

Sander is has some outstanding talent and I look forward to more of his masterpieces, to include DJ mixes. Sander is the wave of the future and survial or eletronic music!!
