Album Description

EXPERIENCE THE BRAIWNAVE STATES OF ADVANCED MEDITATORS

In cooperation with the Dalai Lama, researchers have investigated the brainwave patterns of Tibetan Buddhist monks in states of deep meditation. The studies reveal that these advanced meditators produced high levels of a brainwave called GAMMA.

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, a pioneer in the use of sound for healing and altering states of mind, has created a powerful CD program which weaves subtle pulses of GAMMA brainwave frequencies into a multi-layered musical soundtrack. Your own brainwaves "lock on" to these Gamma waves and move you easily into states of deep meditation, heightened self-awareness, and unity with the world around you.

Simply listen in the background as you meditate or use the visualization and meditation exercises included in the enclosed booklet.

The Delta Sleep System has helped me somewhat but the Gamma System has been life altering!!!

I am excited to purchase some newer systems with their new technology!

After Theta meditation, the Gamma meditation system is the next step to take you even deeper. One of my favourites.

5 out of 5 stars Cured my ADD!!!....temporarily anyway.......2007-04-27

I have inattentive ADD and like most ADDers (lingo for ADD sufferers) it has been the source of much misery and suffering in my life. Especially in my case since conventional ADD medications never worked much for me. I had great success with Ritalin...for only a few days, then I developed an immunity to its effects. Adderall didn't work at all. Had some mild success with Concerta for a few months but eventually developed an immunity to it also, and the side effects were bad. Even tried antidepressants with no luck.

As such, I've had to find alternative means of treatment. I did some research and found out how meditation can aid to relax and focus the mind. Many ADDers have claimed that meditation helped them better cope with the disorder. One article I read even went so far as to claim that meditation could completely cure ADD, but I was skeptical as there have never been documented cases of ADD being cured, let alone by meditation.

I have been a meditation practitioner for a few years, but a sporadic practioner. I have never practiced meditation regularly due to my lack of discipline caused by my condition. Still, I have had mild success with it, and would probably have had greater success if I had the discipline to follow a daily regiment. Nevertheless, meditation has remained a subject of much interest to me. Over the years I have amassed a rather extensive library of books and CDs on the subject. This brings me to this wonderful CD (finally). On the second try of this CD, after meditating for just half an hour, I opened my eyes and felt the same way I felt when I took Ritalin for the first time. I felt focused and attentive. I experienced mental clarity I had not experienced in years. My moodiness, irritability and mild depression were gone. I felt cured. This is without a doubt the best meditation CD I have.

I couldn't believe it and still can't quite wrap my head around it. All the research i've done on meditation indicated that it would take years of regular, disciplined practice to get anywhere near the results I got with this CD. I still can't believe how easily it just happened. As of this writing, I have only used the CD twice. However, as mentioned in the subject heading, the mental clarity only lasted a few hours, after which I gradually reverted back to my foggy, scattered mind. But I am filled with hope that with regular listening I will be able to attain a state of mental clarity for longer periods. I write this review with the hope of helping my fellow ADDers find another means of treatment. But please bear in mind that things affect different people differently, so I cannot guarantee that you will be able to duplicate the degree of success I had with the CD. But if you do decide to try it, I sincerely wish you the best of luck!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best CD!.......2007-03-22

I bought this CD not knowing what to get for meditation. I was looking for the best! I got it! This is my first and if it gets any better than this I would be surprised. I have spoken to people who have taken years to get to where I am now in meditating. I am hooked! After about a week of listening to this 15 minutes a day I am now meditating to this for an hour a day. I feel the vibration in my body. I see things, people.. its awesome!

Album Description

“chasing the ghost” is haunting and captivating, with an essence that cuts to the core. Its hypnotic lull of orchestrated sounds and heartfelt emotion reveal a journey reaching deep into the psyche that will grab you and not let go. Recognized as innovators in sound, Collide prefer to cut their own path. This album, although decidedly different from their previous CDs, once again treads on new ground, combining new elements into a powerful whole.

5 out of 5 stars I am impressed........2007-07-04

Rarely in the darkwave genre do I find anybody that I consider to be interresting, however this time around, I'm satisfied. Collide is a collition of trip hop and goth that sounds like a terrible idea, but actually works out quite well. Collide will trip you out big time!

3 out of 5 stars OKAY BUT NOT STELLAR.......2007-05-18

I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Witching Hour.......2007-04-13

This album is so darkly ethereal and richly textured that I yearn for the poet's ability to paint a vivid word picture of its seductive sound. Sadly, I am not the world reknown poet any review of this album demands, but simply your average music lover, and after musing over it so long my brain cramps, the best I can come up with is something like. "Hey, what do you get when you cross a goth chick with a computer geek?" So you will just have to use your imagination.

Imagine the perfect song for a lovesick vampire. Imagine what moonlight peeking through gathering stormclouds sounds like. Imagine a Hammer horror movie with a Moby soundtrack. Imagine the distant music that haunts the dreams of some half-mad hero from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Imagine the perfect CD for your date with that fair-skinned lovely with the black lipstick and fingernail polish.
Imagine closing your eyes and feeling the sound sweep over you, setting you hair on end and your soul on fire.

Then stop imagining it and order this CD. Wait for a dark and stormy night and slip it in. Set your imagination free on midnite wings...

5 out of 5 stars Chasing the Ghost : one of Collide's best!.......2007-04-13

I highly recommend this Cd to anyone who loves to be swept away in imagination. I find all of Collide's music highly moving and inspiring, and Chasing the Ghost is one that truly grabs you and carries you away. I can't say enough about this cd really.. but it's definitely one of my all-time favorite cds. Dark and alluring.... perfection!

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizingly Hard!!.......2007-04-12

This album is definitely a haunting series of songs!! The bands ability to add that certain haunting nature to Karin's voice is, in my experience, rare!! Defintely a must have for your hard core gothic/industrial/electronica collection!!!

3 out of 5 stars Great voice.......2007-06-09

Sweetly broken drew me to this cd. Great song at that, but much of the cd failed to impress me. But saying that, "sweetly Broken" demands a lot to live up to. Jeremy Riddle has a great voice and a great future. The album itself is not a bad album, in fact it does grow on you a little, but I did expect more.

5 out of 5 stars Several Five Star Songs on this CD.......2007-05-21

yes I love this CD. Especially great are song #3 and #7. Our radio stations have been playing Sweetly Broken for months and it's very popular. It is a great song. But I have to say that I love song #3 even more. It's my favorite song right now. This song is about awe of God in worship. It's about His grace. The musical tambre and vocal qualities express broken, humble and passionate intensity that is rare. It's a GREAT song.

I first heard this song #3 Stand in Awe at a conference in California. I was sent a free copy of this cd (cuz I'm a pastor I guess) and I started listening to it. Between the conference (where Jeremy led it live) and this cd I have been blessed over and over.

We keep this cd in our car right now and are listening to it on the way to the church office every day....and I've found that I can listen to Stand in Awe three times in a row and want to hear it again (am I hooked or what?). I don't like any of the other songs nearly as well, but most of them are really good. I just don't listen to a lot of worship songs repeatedly...but this one I can't get enough of right now.

FWIW-I studied music at Wheaton Conservatory of Music for a year before switching to pastoral training in college. I think I do have a good ear for musical quality..and Riddle has a raw and humble quality to his vocals that really fit well with worship music. I give this cd a five star.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-05-20

The music and songs on this CD are simply beautiful. The song "Sweetly Broken" will get etched into your brain forever once you listen to it. Powerful lyrics and excellent music.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE Jeremy Riddle.......2007-05-14

I received my CD on time and it is one of the best CDs I own!!

5 out of 5 stars Get your heart and head vertical.......2007-05-07

Really good CD, musically and spiritually. I love it when you listen to praise and worship and can tell that the worshiper actually spends time in their bible. Some of the lyrics are references to not as well known bible passages that are very profound. The music is top notch, which only adds to the incredibly well done way of getting your heart and head in the right place....looking vertically toward the creator.
Great stuff for starting the day driving with a cup of coffee....especially good for a monday morning : )

4 out of 5 stars Awesome - as expected.......2006-07-18

While this new album is not as good as the other two, expect to hear more of M's awesome vocals, Mike's raw guitar, Gabe's fantastic drumming, and Jay's debut album with the band. The album does not seem to have as much drive and ambition as its predecessors, its still fun to rock out to.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as the older stuff.......2005-10-18

I usually don;t listen to a lot of punk rock. But a friend turned me on to Tsunami Bomb and we saw 'em live at this little dive bar near me. I became a fan, and i think that the lead singer Agent M is totally sweet.

Anyhow, i was excited as hell when I found this album. But as I listened to it, I didn't get into it as much. Something about the earlier ones was really catchy, sing along stuff..this album doesn;t have as much of that. It's still good, and I do really like the song 'Being Alright' (which is real positive), but the rest just felt less polished or structured to me. I still recommend it for punk fans, tho.

5 out of 5 stars better than "the ultimate escape"........2005-10-10

when I first heard "20 going on.." from "the ultimate escape", I knew I had to get to know this band. From that CD, there were some awesome songs in the vein of "20 going on..", but also a couple fillers. With the definitive act, TB has done away with the fillers and put out an album where you can listen to every song with skipping tracks. this band is very unique because their lead singer is a girl and she has a better vocal range than most of the guys in her genre. this is great stuff, and if you liked "the ultimate escape", you'll LOVE definitive act. they just keep getting better!

5 out of 5 stars mindblowing, a must for anyone with a pulse.......2005-08-21

I stumbled upon Tsunami bomb's first record "the ultimate escape" at a local music store last year, and after hearing 20 going on... (which left me floored), I bought the record. It was simply amazing. To make a better record than "the ultimate escape" seemed impossible to me, but a year later TB arrived with "Definitive act", which could almost be, dare I say, better? If you like music, you must hear Agent M's killer vocals combined with TB's signature dark melody. it's freakin' spine-chilling man! I can't imagine my life without tsunami bomb in it. I can't wait until they come to my town! Please, PLEASE find someway to get both of their records. they'll change your f**king life!!! Highly, HIGHLY advised for purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Transcending the Harder Elements of Rock.......2005-05-23

I know there are people out there that hate punk, dismissing it as childish and immature or simply dont put the effort into hearing some of the better bands instead of just generalizing the whole genre from the bands the media markets like to force down peoples eardrums. But as someone who loves every variety of music out there, to the uninitiated Tsunami Bomb is an excellent punk rock band with one of the best female vocalists I've heard this side of R&B, Gwen Stefani has nothing on her. When she does her solo accapella's and then right after comes a nice whiff of guitar and beatwork it will get you two looks everytime you're stopped at an intersection, first WTF then the second time around "hey thats pretty good, who is that?"

I was in the record store today and was getting pretty frustrated that they didnt have anything I was looking for but when I picked up this album 'The Definitive Act' used I thought I would give it a go since I loved their first cd 'The Enemy Within..' that I picked up way back. On my way to work, not even having the volume at very high, I was simply blown away by the first two songs, very addicting punk melodies. I came to find out nothing on this cd is horrible, there might be some subpar songs but they are certainly listenable and far from annoying. In my opinion 'A Lonely Chord' is the pick of the litter, coming off with a modern style beat of old school big city jazz infused with melodic guitar riffs and of course Agent M's ever so highlighting voice orchestrating it altogether. They have more of a poppish feel to their music on this then previous albums, not radio friendly just something thats more appealing to the ear then a good majority of the punk bands out there.

Normally I dont recommend music to others since everyone has such a pathetic undertaste for dismissing certain bands/groups/singers for not being their type of music. But I would think their style transcends, at the very least, all of the harder elements of rock. If you like Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, or anything with a nice attitude to it I would definately recommend Tsunami Bomb to you.

5 out of 5 stars world's greatest rock and roll band. .......2007-03-18

attention amazon shoppers! you have to have this record! this is the 3rd greatest rock and roll album ever recorded, behind only the band's debut and coliseum rock!

4 out of 5 stars Searching for Airplay.......2005-10-30

After the commercial disappointment of their second album "Violation", Starz decided to court AM radio with a more tune oriented, less aggressive approach. "Anyway You Want It " was the single that brushed the charts, and that was about it. The rest of the album has some good stuff ("Hold On To The Night", "She", "Don't Think", "The Third Time Is The Charm"), but nothing that would grab a radio programmer's ear. It was also a let down for fans after the classic "Violation", and the solid debut album. Rather than building their core audience, Starz grabbed for the brass ring, and came up empty.

2 out of 5 stars They never made it for a reason.......2005-06-15

Since 1980 I have tried in vain (and hard) to really like this band. Although Starz are comprised of competent players, their songs are simply bogawful! Sorry, it's as simple as this.
(Two star rating for the nice guitar sound)

3 out of 5 stars Their weakest album but it's a good late 70's rock album.......2005-05-30

Of all the Starz albums that I own I would say that this is my least favorite album but it does contain some classic songs like X-Ray Spex, Good Ale We Seek, Hold on to the Night and the 7 minute epic Johnny All Alone, at first when I listened to this album I remember feeling really dissapointed by it and it almost made me gave up on them, fortunately I decided to check and see how good the Coliseum Rock album and I thought that it was a great album, it made me become a bigger fan of them and I went out to buy their first two albums.

I think that Starz should've been as big as KISS, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent and Cheap Trick.

5 out of 5 stars What a masterpiece!.......2005-03-29

You want to know something. Back in early 1978 Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti was entering its swan song. With hits like Kasmir and Trampled Under Foot topping the charts of Heavy Metal consumption, there seemed to be a void in the Hard Rock world. Yes, Van Halen was to release their debut album that year. However, there was a group that had already paid their dues, already put out two albums of New York flavored Hard Rock, and already to put out a kick ass new album. Yes!!!!! The band is known as STARZ!!! The new album? ATTENTION SHOPPERS! Pay attention? Hell yes pay attention, because this is one of the most important rock album debuts ever! Beginning with the intro X-Ray Spex through Waitin on You, this album is stunning! Every single song is catchy and will burn into your synapsis guaranteed! It is definitely one of the greatest Hard Rock albums of all times. Do me a favor. The next time you're in your ride and are doing over 70 MPH, have X-Ray Spex blaring through your speakers and you will get it!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST.......2006-06-23

I've got every Terri Hendix CD, and with each one I think - Wow! This is the best ever! Playful, introspective, thoughtful, funny - with music and lyrics complimenting each other to a 'T'. This is one of my favoite CD's of all time - Can't wait for the next one!

3 out of 5 stars Some Very Good Songs on a Misfire Album.......2005-12-18

Like many folk and indie artists in the last few years, Terri Hendrix has been moved by the muse to craft a social/political album. And like many social/political albums in the last few years, this one has some very good songs, and clunks in between.

If you've heard tracks like "Breakdown" and "Monopoly," you know that Terri Hendrix has some sharp, incisive views. She has the ability to cut through the chatter and get right to the heart of what's wrong in our world today. But if you listen to the album cuts that haven't been released to radio and podcasts, tracks like "It's About Time" and "Judgement Day," the lyrical content becomes leaden and declarative. She feels the need to spell everything out, like she can't quite trust her audience to follow what she's saying and come to their own conclusions. It's as though she lapses into a professorial mentality, lecturing to students who are hunched over their composition books taking notes.

Sonically, this album is sterling. Hendrix doesn't abandon the guitar-driven Texas country sound that has characterized most of her music to date. But she does incorporate a little more of a peppy pop aspect that steers her ringing voice into more Mariah and less Loretta Lynn. Reading over what I've just written, I realize that could sound like an insult, but I don't mean it that way. Rather, Terri uses the mainstream like a buffet, picking and choosing what serves the very individual hybrid sound she's trying to create.

Late in the album, she slackens on the political drive, and a sturdier, more organic lyric crive comes through. I admit to not liking Luka Bloom's version "I Need Love" from a few years ago, but Terri Hendrix makes it her own, and it works well. "Quiet Me" and "Long Ride Home" were both written by other artists, but Hendrix makes them her own, adding a welcome dose of personal introspection at the end of the disc.

Fans of Terri Hendrix will find plenty to like about this CD. So will fans of indie folk and lo-fi country. Even the weaker political songs have good musical resonance, including some violin and cello, and supporting vocals from Ruthie Foster. This album isn't a future classic, and it isn't even going to be remembered as one of Hendrix's better efforts. But it is going to be heard and remembered, and that's what really matters.

5 out of 5 stars She's the nicest person in the world........2004-11-11

She has a dynamic voice, great songs, and a great personality. She is very witty, and her songs showcase her wit well. If you like a great variety of music, you'll likely enjoy this album -- her diverse interests shine through brightly. It's a great cd (as are all of her others). I even like her live cd's, which is entirely out-of-character for me. Hope to see you at another PA show!

5 out of 5 stars Totally engaging.......2004-10-20

This is my first Terri Hendrix album but it won't be my last. Every song is a winner. She's totally engaging with a voice that draws you in, first rate music, and lyrics that are deep and personal.

5 out of 5 stars Terri Rocks.......2004-10-13

This is a great CD. Every single song is incredible. Terri's songwriting skills are only eclipsed by the way she sings these songs. If you have a chance to see her live DO NOT MISS IT. She is even better live.

The producers of Mike Leigh's vibrant Topsy-Turvy took many big studio meetings seeking financing for their film. Word has it all went swimmingly until time for the pitch came--there are apparently no two words as unsettling to Hollywood film execs as "Gilbert & Sullivan." But the studio system's loss turned out to be the indie film's--and our--gain. Leigh's film brought the composers' late-19th-century mounting of their breakthrough The Mikado to an all-too-familiar life, filled with as many neuroses, foibles, and fragile egos as any modern Broadway musical. The film's score, an inviting pastiche adapted from Mikado (and other G&S staples) by veteran Carl Davis, may upset purists with its time-conscious liberties. But then, it might just win over a receptive yet unexposed new audience for whom this music may seem strangely familiar, as well it should: this is where modern musical theater began. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Here's a How-De-Do!.......2007-02-22

It's brilliant, really! I am a self-confessed Gilbert and Sullivan fanatic, and so the release of this soundtrack to accompany a truly delightful movie provided me with an "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!" moment ... many of them, actually! To hear some of my favorite tunes from some of my favorite G & S operetti performed so well makes my heart "sing-o" - and me, too!

5 out of 5 stars Topsy-Turvy is TOPS!!!.......2007-02-21

This is Gilbert and Sullivan like you will never hear again! These performances are so fresh and alive with comedy flourish that my formerly "purist" ears reveled in delight at this magnificeant rendition of these great operettas. It is wonderful to hear excerpts from PRINCESS IDA,IOLANTHE and SORCERER (as well as THE MIKADO) when so many recordings already exist of the other G&S chestnuts,PINAFORE and PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
The actual cd itself fills the speakers and is a true listener's dream.A great soundtrack of a great film.Wonderfully recorded by SONY.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-02-25

This is a fantastic cd, one that I have listened to many many times without growing tired of it. The particularly nice thing about this cd for lovers of the movie is that you get to hear the entire performance for many songs which are necessarily cut short in the film, most enjoyably "A Wandring Minstrel I". As has been noted in other reviews, the vocal performances are not what you will typically find in other G & S recordings: they are far less burdened with mannered belle canto nonsense, to their immense benefit. And I must disagree with one reviewer who disparaged the staging as portrayed in the film. My wife and I saw a touring production of the Mikado which used the costumes and set from the movie, and it was fantastic. Even better, the performers seemed to take some cues from the film actors too, singing and performing in a way that was much more accessible and not a bit less pleasing.

4 out of 5 stars Better than many a G&S non-sountrack.......2003-09-16

I was compelled to get this after seeing the overlong, flawed, but nonetheless all-around amazing 'Topsy Turvy'. (Seriously - almost every supporting actor in the film deserved an Oscar, and Jim Broadbent was robbed; his Gilbert is magnificent and real.)
Inspired then to hear a true G&S performance, I bought several Carte recordings. What broke my heart is that the genuine Savoy performances are not as good as those of the 'Topsy' actors! Contrary to a review here, the articulation is just dandy. And the tenor in 'Wand'ring Minstrel' alone is far, far superior to the thin, reedy, annoying versions on the several concert cds I've heard. As is the riveting soprano on the beautiful 'The Sun Whose Rays...' of 'Topsy'; again, the actual Savoy recordings are merely shrill in comparison.
I remove one star only because of the necessarily abbreviated performances here.

5 out of 5 stars Put on the CD, close your eyes and..........2003-03-02

You are back in the Savoy Theater in Victorian England, watching a Gilbert and Sullivan production of the Mikado, or Yeoman of the Guard, or the Sorcerer, or Princess Ida. The qualiity of the music is superb, the voices are wonderful and I only wish I could have videos of all the G&S productions to watch along with the music.

Buy the DVD of Topsy-Turvy if you don't already own it. It's magnificent. See my other review.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20

Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and simple.......2006-08-04

Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

With a stripped-down list of members and a lean, tech-pop sound, Gus Gus's Attention gets more from less, building a lively, kinetic sound that draws heavily from old-school acid house and new-school electro. Instead of taking the usual crowd of filmmakers, artists, and even some musicians into the studio, only a trio of regular members contributed to Attention, along with vocalist Earth, whose pipes give the record's spare rhythms an edge of diva-funk. It can make for a pretty sexy sound, as tracks like "David" (featuring the provocative refrain "I still have last night in my body") attain a hands-in-the-air momentum. But overall, the diversity of the music is what keeps the record afloat, as Gus Gus piece together an aggressively modern sound from a cleverly chosen selection of early techno influences. Throughout the record, the synths are as bright as anything you'd find at an early '90s hyper-rave, but they're often integrated into synth-pop structures; "Unnecessary" sounds like something Soft Cell might be recording right now in a perfect world. While the record's jumbled approach starts to wear itself out toward the end, Gus Gus have the requisite big ears and open minds to keep it interesting. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars icey hot electro funk.......2005-07-06

I just found out that these guys are going to play live in dc again soon and ended up listening to this disc again. Memories of how this scaled- down group from Iceland thoroughly rocked the 9:30 club a few years ago came flooding back. Apparantly some people still can't get past the fact that Gus Gus are no longer a nine piece mega-circus who make spooky downtempo albums for 4ad. To those people I say please GET OVER IT. Granted "Polydistortion" was a fantastic and timeless release, and in my opinion, "This is Normal" was mediocre. Still, the same electric Gus Gus heart beats strong throughout "Attention", only it's a bit dirtier, nastier, and funkier. This album grabbed my attention from beginning to end with it's raw electro and techno beats more geared for the dancefloor than the fat chair. There are still plenty of beautiful synths and textures throughout, just a bit more minimal and sparringly applied. The production on this recording is superb and they display a well-schooled knowledge of electronic dance music's history. There are very electro-sounding tracks on here as well as trancey and stomping, soaring techno-based songs. And no,these guys are not to be confused with the whole crap electro-clash scene or forgettable trance pap by the likes of Oakey or Paul VanDyke or whatever boring as sin cookie cutter designer hipster drivel is being made currently. There is a very cool Icelandic feel throughout the disc and singer Earth warms things up with some of the most soulful vocals to be found anywhere today. This is a very accessable and extroverted release that should be in any lover of electronic dance music's collection. This is not for people who can't get over the past or have a problem with dancing.

2 out of 5 stars Gus Gus what happened happened?!.......2005-03-07

I've been listening to Gus Gus for a LOOOONG time, I have several of their remix singles, I have every album before this one and I've seen them live once. I was excited to get this album, albeit a bit wary knowing going in that the line up of the group was not the same as the other albums. I'm glad I got this album used and not new because I am really disappointed.

There is really only one great song on this album and that is "David". There are one or two other tracks that are ok, but passable. I like the new vocalist, its a shame the backing beats are so stupid. I'm a electronica freak but one of my biggest pet peeves is overuse of the high hat in the percussion and this album has high hat misuse ALL OVER IT. Not only is it annoying, but it is a completely unimaginative use of percussion. If you want to know who the Masters are of complicated and sophisticated programming, turn to Oakenfold or BT. These songs on this album are like nails on a chalkboard, they are so bad. I tried to like it, I really did. But I simply can not stand the programming done on this album. Like another reviewer stated, they are simple and sound like some beginner high school group playing around with their new keyboards. The tracks without any vocals are simply unlistenable. They remind me of bad happy hardcore back from the day. People, aren't we past that? No depth, hardly any layering, no substance. Just that damned incessant wretched screeching high hat that I hate so much. Sound like hitting a trash can with a stick over and over. With all the advancements that have been made in electronic music in the past 15 years, this is the best you could do?

I bought it, I'm ripping "David" onto my computer and I'm reselling it. Gus Gus, call me when you get the rest of the gang back and can make a decent album.

5 out of 5 stars Gus Gus is On On.......2005-01-15

Don't miss this one, folks. Soooo listenable, over and over. Earth (purrrrr!!!), Biggi, Buckmaster, and President Bongo lay down trippy, frozen beats from trippy, frozen Iceland. Unique, smart, and icy.

5 out of 5 stars Work in Progress.......2004-12-24

It's not easy to describe a group comprised of nine members in one record and three in the next, who are alternately jazzy and raucous, whose vocalists range from the sealskin smooth tenor of Daniel August to the puffin blubber mezzo of Earth and who dish out EVERYTHING with no holds barred electronic orchestration. But such is Gus Gus, based on their albums a work in progress from day one. They have been around for about a decade now but I just discovered them in 2004 and I count them my favorite new group. Hands down. Their music is all over the place - smooth jazzy ballads (Desire) to wild falsetto romps (Barry) to contrapuntally complex bleep and pop etudes (I.I.E.) and Matthew Herbert-style eJazz (Cold Breath). But they have produced some absolute killer tracks: Call of the Wild, David, Gun and Barry to name my favorites. Whatever has changed over time with this group, some demonic core remains in full control producing great music. Their website promises a new disk in early 2005 and I can't wait.

3 out of 5 stars Bipolar- It's great! It's not that great!.......2004-10-14

How could an album be so polarized? It seems the members of Gus Gus came up with a few killer tracks and then added filler to make an album. Songs like "David" and "Desire" are completely amazing, in so many ways. These and a couple other songs will appeal to a broad diversity of musical tastes. They give you chills. Gus Gus bridges musical genres to come up with completely original music, and the great vocals are the icing on the cake. There are tweaked guitars to classical piano, then super produced synths. The rest are mediocre tracks, and then some garbage. That's why I had to regrettably give "Attention" 2.5 stars. If only I could rate the singles.

4 out of 5 stars For serious musicians only!.......2002-08-29

On this cd, you really have to understand Michael Manrings,
bass playing and his "bass explorations". Honestly it took
a few listens, but it is a very good cd. The sounds he uses,
are very "inventive" ,with a splash of the late great
Jaco Pastorious(Weather Report). Very interesting cd,"keep
them coming Michael". This CD has some fine guests,
Paul McCanles,of the group OREGON. Its basically Manrings and drummer, and guitar.Like I said."if you are a bass player,
this is a must for a different type of ear candy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Manring, Alexander and Skolnick are awesome!.......2001-11-16

Rating: 9.5 / 10

Tim "Herb" Alexander - Drums (ex-Primus, Laundry)
Alex Skolnick - Guitar (ex-Testament, Savatage, Skolpatrol)
Michael Manring - Bass (no explanation needed)

These players got together on the Manring solo album "Thonk" and decided to recreate the magic of their playing, as a band as Attention Deficit. All three are one the best in their respective fields and they don't let anyone down here. The music can be described as pure experimental at its best. I was blown away from the opening track "ATM" right on through to the final track "Say Hello To My Little Friend"(one of the many references to Scarface). Herb's drumming is great as usual, I think this guy can lay a groove over anything, and I mean ANYTHING! Skolnick shows his influence of the great jazz player John Scofield in numerous places. If you are expecting to hear "Practice What You Preach" revised I would have to say you will be very disappointed. Manring pick up where he left off in "Thonk" and if there is anything sweeter sounding than a Zon bass played by the master himself, I haven't heard it. If your looking for an album that sounds like nothing you have heard before and you love progressive, experimental music, this should be already in your cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Manring is the man........2001-08-22

As a bass player, I appreciate good bass work. Manring is at the top of his field as a bass player. In total control all the time.

Don't play this cd on shuffle. :-) All the tracks work together. It's like one giant tune.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant album!! Give it a try!!!.......2001-03-06

Criminally overlooked 'super-group' tear it up on their debut CD. Skolnick I'd never heard before, he makes nice use of texture and has a nasty tone as well. Alexander's drums sound absolutely huge, like Bonham on steroids. Manring is just nasty, the fretless harmonics and chord work he employs here are a mini-textbook on the future of bass guitar. For three guys who'd never played together before, they mesh well. Very little noodling and some solid compositions, I hope they get a chance to do this again.

4 out of 5 stars a great album.......2000-05-31

A non-lyrics master piece. Great bass lines by Michael Manring, precise drums by Tim Alexander and inspired guitars by Alex Skolnick. This album has atmospheric and improvised songs that shows the talent of these musicians.
