Things don't get much schmaltzier than a Dobro played Hawaiian style, which is why it's fitting that Cowboy Jack Clement offers one up on "The Blue Side of Lonesome," Leon Payne's dated but charming classic--only one such excursion into blue-haired reminiscing on an album of over-the-top sentimentality. It was the legendary Clement who paired smart-ass folkie Prine and bluegrass totem Wiseman, but the singers themselves chose the repertoire, which reads like songs people of a certain age might pick on a dry drunk. The tunes range, believe it or not, from religious hymns to covers of Patti Page's 1957 hit "Old Cape Cod," Kris Kristofferson's underrated "Just the Other Side of Nowhere," and Tom T. Hall's "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," with a little Elvis and Ernest Tubb thrown in for good measure. It's fitting that Prine and Wiseman revisit the Hall standard, since oddly, both singers vocally favor the Nashville storyteller from time to time. But one has to question their use of the Grand Ole Opry's Carol Lee Singers, who show up on several cuts and seem, well, just bizarre on a John Prine record, even as they evoke the lushly famous Nashville Sound of the 1960s. Suffice it to say, this is a quirky project, and if Prine's scratchy baritone and Wiseman's melodic tenor sometimes overlap to where you can't tell who's singing what, it doesn't much matter. You're listening to two new pals having what seems to be the time of their life. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Prine and twang.............2007-07-03

I first caught the wind of the country & western direction in John Prine when I heard his earlier CD "In Spite of Ourselves." The Nashville influence has laid a noticable twang on his voice to the extent that the vocals are sometimes hardly recognizable as Mr. Prine. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, on my first listening, I also thought immediately of Tom T. Hall. For long time followers more accustomed to John's rebellious angles (and the wry title, at least, is pure Prine) this CD might be quite a shock. But I accept it as simply the mark of a mature artist stretching himself artistically, not "selling out" for the sake of sales to a mellower audience. My apologies for not commenting more about Mac, I am less familiar with his work but I assume that stylistically this is more in his comfort zone. His vocals bond nicely with John's and this is definitely equality in a duet. A nice relaxing work, accept it for what it is, not what you expect of John Prine.

4 out of 5 stars I guess I'm an "average people.".......2007-06-27

I heard John Prine and Mac Wiseman on NPR one afternoon
and fell in love. Their song choices are wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointment ...and so sorry to say it.......2007-06-26

This was such a disappointment. I had looked forward to this for months, having admired Mac Wiseman for over fifty years, and Prine for thirty or so. But this just doesn't work.

The songs are such classics that each singer could do them well while singing by himslef. But there are just no strong emotional tugs from these "collaborations." Mac has done some great work singing with other bluegrass singers, and Prine has been terrific in his work with women singers ... but these two great men never seem to feed off one another. The feel suggests that these guys were not even singing together. I'll lay this away and go back to the many songs that I have by each that are so terrific.

5 out of 5 stars John Prine Love.......2007-06-14

I don't think there is anything John Prine could do to diminish the love we feel for his music in our family. We think he might be America's poet, or one of them anyway. This CD is sweet and lovely and seems like two great guys sitting down playing and singing some nice tunes together and we all get to listen or sing along. "Standard songs for average people..." - the title says it all. Just a sweet ole time with John Prine and, in this case, with Mr. Wiseman, too. I gave this to my husband for our anniversary, along with the recently released John Prine DVD, and we are always just so grateful for great artists and John Prine is surely one.

1 out of 5 stars Awfully corny.......2007-06-12

Sorry, love nearly all of JP's output but this is the worst I've ever heard, schmaltzy, corny, cringe-inducing, hurts me to say but it's the way I would see it. Bought it blind on the strength of all John's other stuff and regretted it immediately. If everyone else thinks it's great, maybe I can get my money back on ebay...

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment Modest Mouse started sounding like a real band. For the longest time, singer-songwriter Isaac Brock seemed to exist solely to defy the established rules, forging forward on sheer momentum and ingenuity. Even Pavement looked relatively ordinary in comparison to the band's early releases like 1996's This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. But on Good News for People Who Love Bad News, the frontman sounds like he's finally touching the earth, and the band--minus founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green--follows suit. A relaxed mood prevails, not so much in volume but in attitude. On the follow-up to the group's 2000 major label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, big sloppy melodies battle it out with brass on punky epics like "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." The lyrics are simpler, the arrangements tamer, but the vitality remains. The prevailing mood is that Modest Mouse has pulled off something extraordinary here: a well-rounded, lovable record that doesn't sound anything like David Gray. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars One hit song does not a sell-out album/band make.......2007-06-20

Yes, "Float On" was a smash hit. Yes, it's pretty poppy. But what about "3rd Planet" and "Gravity Rides Everything" from "The Moon and Antarctica"? To a (possibly much) lesser extent, what about "Heart Cooks Brain" from "TLCW" or "Dramamine" from "This is a Long Drive"? You see, MM have generally had more "mainstream-palatable" songs on their album, and just because this one was a hit, does not mean they sold out.
OK, you've heard that rant before, but not in such an *ahem* eloquent fashion. Now onto the review.
As usual, the hit is by no means the best song on the album. Other songs like "The World At Large", "Ocean Breathes Salty", "Bury Me With It", "Bukowski", "The View", and (ESPECIALLY) "The Good Times are Killing Me" (which, by the way, if you did not know, was remixed and tampered with by one of the best bands of all time, the Flaming Lips) not only give "Float On" a run for its money, they take the money and use it to buy cigars.
I mean, the fact that supposedly hardcore fans are nitpicking this great album because it has freakin' "Float On" on it more points out their own stupidity and narrow-mindedness than it does the band being sell outs.
So, in conclusion, if you want to keep your rather dubious "indie cred", do not buy this album. If you enjoy Modest Mouse as much as anyone should, however, than do.

5 out of 5 stars "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?".......2007-04-19

I am becoming more and more of a fan of this kind of off-beat, different music. I guess I can't help myself. I liked the single "Float On" when I heard it a few years ago, but again, I didn't pursue the album until later. Good News is interesting because of its contrasting moods. The plucky guitars and catchy harmonies conflict with the cynical lyrics that attack religion and certain kinds of people. The vocals range from pleasant sounds in the background to aggressive, near shouting tirades. The singer isn't all that great at singing, but he's great at using his voice to convey any mood he wants.

"The World At Large" starts off the album about as happy as it gets, with flutes and meaningless vocals in the background. "Bury Me With It" is about as angry as the band gets musically, though not lyrically. That would be "Bukowski", which is completely pleasant musically. "The View" sounds like kind of like dance music. "Satin In a Coffin" uses prominent drums and older sounding instruments to create a very interesting sound. "The Good Times Are Killing Me" finishes off the album while perfectly illustrating the conflict of sound and message, and it's produced by The Flaming Lips, which is cool. Modest Mouse is a unique band, and a good one at that.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe I heard this on the radio........2007-03-27

The first time "Float On" came across the radio I almost $#!? my pants. I fell in love with Modest Mouse after I heard "Dramamine". Not immediately, but after listening to the "Long Drive" record repeatedly, the band grew on me. And grew. And grew. Now 8 or 9 CD's later they're still growing on me. I'm glad they've found radio success and hope they are able to keep producing new music.

My highlights for this record include Bukowski, Black Cadillacs, and Satin In A Coffin. If you truly love the band and aren't just in it for the image, you'll love this record. The whole album is great. Yes, even Float On.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you're an old school MM fan, listen to it with an open mind.......2007-03-12

This album is the worst Modest Mouse album, in my opinion, but it's still really great. That's the beauty of Modest Mouse.

What I love about Isaac Brock is that his music reveals a lot about who he is and what life has taught him. Good News for People Who Love Bad News is no exception.

The only track I don't like on this album is "Satin in a Coffin". After hearing a live recording, which I love, I can't stand to listen to the one on gnfpwlbn. It lacks passion and intensity.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another masterpiece from Modest Mouse.......2007-01-21

These guys have released so many great albums that the expectations are always incredibly high for their next one. And every time they release one, I listen to it, and I'm a bit disappointed, and I say to myself, "it's good, but it's not as great as the last ones."

Then I listen to it more, and it begins to grow on me, and soon I can't stop listening to it and I'm raving, "This is their greatest album!".

That's what happened to me with this one. Didn't blow me away at first. Now? I am like an addict. As soon as a song ends I need to hear it again immediately. And I can't stop listening to the album, and I don't want to listen to anything else....

I give it huge props, even though they diss my beloved Charles Bukowski.

Continuing to specialize in the art of curve-throwing, R.E.M. followed up its 1991 smash, Out of Time, with this fragile album of soft melodies and string arrangements. The sympathetic ballad "Everybody Hurts" must have prevented countless suicide attempts, while the Andy Kaufman tribute "Man on the Moon" (with Michael Stipe affecting an Elvis Presley imitation) and the rock-into-oblivion "Drive" are among the quartet's strongest hits. (The opening line, "Hey, kids, rock and roll," isn't so much a rallying cry as an expression of anxiety.) It takes a few listens for its charms to unfold, but Automatic is the gem between bigger hits Out of Time and Monster. --Steve Knopper

4 out of 5 stars The last worthwhile R.E.M. album.......2007-07-05

For all the angst and harrowing depression that seemed to be the vogue of the time, few tried making it as soft and beautiful as the arrangements found on Automatic For the People. Several of these tracks are quite affecting even after multiple listens and even the overplayed hit, "Everybody Hurts," is good in small doses. "Man on the Moon" is one of their all-time best tunes, "Drive" a fabulous opener, and "Nightswimming" one of their most underappreciated singles.

One must wonder how much credit is due to John Paul Jones, who does the strings on several songs, but consider this something of a comeback for R.E.M. after their last two limp efforts--sadly, the comeback would NOT last. A bit overrated (some call it the band's best album), but still a very solid effort all around, and the last R.E.M. album worth picking up for anyone except hardcore fans.

Best cuts: "Man on the Moon," "Nightswimming," "Drive," "Try Not to Breathe," "Sweetness Follows," "Everybody Hurts," "Find the River," "Monty Got a Raw Deal"

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING...Enduring...everlasting...a musical giant!.......2007-06-29

It was the summer of my lost youth, and my cousin and friends were diving on the cliffs in Newport, Rhode Island, and we knew we shouldn't have been there, and I was bringing a boom box with us everywhere. They wanted LL Cool J and the like, and I pumped out "Out of Time" and they all gave me dirty looks, but moved their heads and got into it just the same.

When 'Automatic for the People' came out, it was if I had found my place in the world. I was an older, (much older) teenager, but I seemed to find my niche in this busy sector of life, and Michael Stipe seemed to portray in no uncertain terms, what it was like to be alive.

I was alive. 'Everybody Hurts' is an anthem for a lost culture, not just a generation. How splendid the video was, how utterly bewildering the song was, still echoing somewhere in my minds eye today, stood sinister and barren on the wooded knoll of my future; and I thought, with so much energy, that things couldn't be that bad. That with some thought and drive, anyone could really get through anything that this cruel world throws at them. That is what this album meant to me friends.

'Automatic for the People' is pure, refined Stipe at his finest. Those days where REM was splitting ears all over the globe, and the baby boomer generation asking 'wow, who is this.'

I miss those days of wonderment and fine music. I miss those days of knowing and anticipating your favorite bands next album, and not wondering, not hoping, but KNOWING, that it would be magical, tangible, and that it would speak to you. That every song would be your favorite and you would know each one word for word, just like 'Green'.

Songs like, 'Find the River' and 'Try not To Breath' told me that things are what they are, and REM proved beyond all recognition and understanding, that they, all four of them at that time??? were the band to be reckoned with......

.....Michael Stipe has given us poetry in motion and I thank him for his prose and talent, and for that, for that small, simple part of this gigantic metaphor we find ourselves in, is worth living...just to hear this poetic album of solitude and understanding....

As others have stated before me, "Automatic for the
People" is one of the most enduring musical achievements of the 1990's.

In fact, I would put it in the leagues of the finest albums of all time, on the run with RadioHead's 'Ok Computer'.

Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums ever released!.......2007-06-08

Automatic For The People is REM's 1993 album released as follow up to the successful Out Of Time. The album is unique in REM's discography in that it relies heavily on string arrangements, which gives the album a nice, cozy, and sentimental feel.

The albums kicks off with the outstanding Drive before driving us through 11 tracks of pure excellence that includes the brilliant Try Not To Breathe and The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, the heartbreaking hit single Everybody Hurts (a song once dedicated to the late Nirvana frontman, and Michael Stipe's friend Kurt Cobain), the politically charged Ignoreland, the elusive Sweetness Follows and Star Me Kitten, the Andy Kaufman ode and hit single Man On The Moon (the song that would eventually become the foundation for a movie of the same title in 1999 starring Jim Carrey as Kaufman), the ethereal Nightswimming, and the folksy album closer Find The River.

REM went on to release other powerful albums in the years that followed Automatic, most notably Monster, but Automatic stands out as an album that really pulled me in, and made me appreciate REM to this day.

One of the greatest albums ever released!

3 out of 5 stars I'm not getting it..........2007-05-12

This was a massive success, completely dwarfing even Out of Time - not to mention each of the group's previous albums - in terms of units moved. And I can see why. It's a very accessible collection, much easier to listen to than the murky early records. And Stipe's clearly enunciating his words, rather than mumble his way through. Which is where the controversy sets in. Depending on who you ask, Automatic is either a brilliant masterwork of an album, among the best R.E.M. ever put out, or it's an abomination. At first I put it in category 2 - initially, only Man on the Moon and Everybody Hurts grabbed me. Now I think it occupies the vast territory between the two, much like Green.
The beginning and end of this record are as strong as any - the orchestrated Drive sets the tone nicely, and the ballad Try Not to Breathe continues to. I assume you've heard The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite (AKA callmewhenyoutrietowakeher), and it's a brilliantly stupid song. And if you've turned on the radio for the past decade you know Everybody Hurts, which is brilliant but NOT stupid - a surprisingly emotional power-ballad. Great, great, GREAT song.
You might as well skip straight ahead to track ten, though, because there's nothing of value coming for a long stretch. New Orleans Instrumental #1, Sweetness Follows, Monty Got a Raw Deal, Ignoreland, Star Me Kitten... No, no, no. What are they doing here? Get rid of 'em all. In fact, let's forget they ever existed.
Okay, now we can get back to the good stuff. Man on the Moon was overplayed as hell back in the '90s, but circa 2007 it's much easier to appreciate the mature lyrics, deeply layered harmonies, and the song's atmosphere. I think this is my favorite off the album, maybe even the group's best of the '90s. Love it. Same with the lush, nostalgiac Nightswimming, the fourth ubergiganto radio hit. Another favorite of mine. And Find the River brings the whole thing to a lovely close.
So, not a bad album, and thankfully there's nothing as bad as Shiny Happy People or Stand. But this is unbelievably far from R.E.M.'s greatest achievement - even if it kicks the crap out of Out of Time.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Love Affair!.......2007-04-26

R.E.M. had had a difficult job following up the success of Out Of Time but they had finally managed to produce an album equally as good and commercially more successful. Its commercial success had laid in the fact that the album had more songs which appealled as singles and the success of 'Man On The Moon', 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite' and of course 'Everybody Hurts'.

The album starts off with two songs which lead the listener into the album nicely; Drive and Try Not To Breathe. Just as the middle tracks are sometimes overlooked by the brilliance of the three major songs and Nightswimming, the first two tracks can sometimes be forgotten, but both are excellent and well placed as lead ups to The Sidewinder.... and Everybody Hurts. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite is one of REM's happy songs and is in beautiful contrast with the sombre Everybody Hurts. Although the lyrics for the latter suggest it is about overcoming problems it is only occasionally that the music matches this and it is impossible to describe Everybody Hurts as anything other than, in contrast to The Sidewinder, a sad REM song. This may be the sort of description a child would use but the songs themselves are plain and simple - one fun and happy the other sad and sombre.

Althought the middle of the album lacks the greatness that sparks the rest of Automatic For The People, the tracks are still of a high quality and in particular Monty Got A Raw Deal and Sweetness Follows. Ignoreland has good lyrics and is the groups political song on the album but the music lets it down somewhat - however it still adds an extra dimension to the album.

It is the last three tracks that really confirm the albums place in greatness however. Man On The Moon is simply Stipe at his best as an entertainer and the song just pips The Sidewinder as the most upbeat song on the album. Again, as they had earlier on the album, REM follow up a happy song with a tragic one and for me, personally, one of their best ever. Nightswimming is the song sums up the album personally and also has the advantage of not being played countless times in the media. Without doubt the highpoint for anyone buying this album who is familiar only with REM's major commercial successes. The album closes as quietely as it began with Find The River, and it is these three songs which end the album that show REM at their very best.
In its time, Automatic For The People had been voted 6th by the public for a book by Virgin acclaiming the top 100 albums ever in England. Although there are often these polls a closer look shows why this demonstrates how good this album is. The Beatles' Revolver had claimed top spot and the group had had two other albums in the top five. In second Radiohead had had The Bends and in fourth they had Ok Computer. When coming only behind the most acclaimed group of all time and the most acclaimed group of nineties Britain, it is clear that this album does appeal over a wide circumference of people. Along with Out Of Time this is REM at their original best and a must for even the very slightest of fans.

Public Enemy is not the kind of group that does compromise--either you own It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back and its explosive follow-up Fear of a Black Planet in their entirety or you simply hate music. So use this all-too-brief primer merely as a map to find your way to the albums that actually shook the world, mixing blunt politics with hard-hitting beats and Chuck D's prophet-like zeal for affecting change. If nothing else, tracks like "Bring The Noise" and "Fight The Power" serve as timely reminders of how much power hip-hop can wield when not tripped up in name-calling and bitch-slapping (D famously dubbed the genre "CNN for black people"), while on "911 is a Joke" Flava Flav proves there's a fine-line between laughter and tears. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars If you don't have this, you're your own enemy.......2007-07-20

Public Enemy had one of the more distinct and unique sounds of any major rap group from the late 80s/early 90s, both as to the music and Chuck D's raps. They were big into social and political commentary with Chuck D blasting away at injustice and other BS over often disonant and clangy music, which actually served well to mirror and underlie the chaotic situations described in the lyrics. Flavor Flave played well off of Chuck with his interjections, which added "flavor" to a number of tunes. Some reviewers dissed this a bit because it didn't have a certain particular tune that is their favorite and they just can't imagine it not being on a compilation. O.K., if you're that hardcore, buy all the individual albums. This CD is just a great overview of a rap group with one of the more unique urban sounds and insistent messages. Particularly worthy raps:

3 out of 5 stars ok, wanted a little more variety.......2006-11-11

not bad, but i thought it'd have some of the other well-known hits on it as well. good for reminiscing about my youth!

5 out of 5 stars This is what got me into Public Enemy!.......2006-08-01

Without a doubt, hip-hop was in its prime during the late 80's and early 90's. Unfortunatly, I didn't even exist untill '91...I was born into the generation of cookie-cutter "gangsta" (c)rap like 50 cent and lil john...oh, how lucky am I...

Anyway, I had heard a few samples from p.e. on tv and the internet, and decided to look for one of their cds. They sounded so different than anything I've heard before. Chuck D's vocal energy and style grabs your attention right away, while Flava's crazy wierdness keeps you hooked. While looking through Wallmart's cd selection, I came across this cd and decided that a greatest hits cd would be a perfect introduction to a group I had never really listened to before.(It was only 10 bucks, so what harm could it be?) Lemme tell ya, after listening through the cd once, my jaw was dropped, and I was floored.

First off, for any fans of pop-rap with candy-coated beats, this cd is NOT for you. Public Enemy are raw, hard, and abrasive. They're definatly not for everyone.

Second, their lyrics are political, and confront many serious issues that were being ignored during that time. Pay close attention, and you'll see that they actually have something important to say and aren't just grunting about their cars, money, hoes, bling-bling, whatever.

Finally, while their music may sound somewhat cacaphony at times, they were definatly way ahead of their time. They have the rare ability to make seemingly clashing noises work together in an intriguing and almost harmoneous way. For example, "Rebel Without A Pause" uses a repetitive screeching tea kettle in the background, which would be ear-drum-breaking in any other circumstance. However, combined with the song's heavy bass and Chuck D's lyrical wit, the kettle becomes less of a nussance and more of an actual instrument that enhances the song's quality. (Yeah, that sounds really stupid, but I don't have any other way of describing it.)

So yeah, that's another one of my rambling reviews. I would recomend this cd to hip-hop fans who are open-minded and ready for beats that are rough and different from anything else. I've become a huge fan of p.e. because of this cd, and I plan to buy more of their work. That's all for now. PEACE

5 out of 5 stars PE Keep Bringin That Noise! [and sonnin' Viper].......2006-07-06

What else can be said about this release? The entire collection of singles (from their Def Jam period) from the most important and influential group ever. It doesnt get much better than this.

Public Enemy albums are consistent affairs with segues, inserts and instrumentals acting as the musical glue for each release. Some have therefore argued that listening to the singles in isolation is a less cohesive affair. I disagree. While Chuck D maintains that the group has never been singles orientated, their discography begs to differ: throughout the early 1990's, Public Enemy single releases were massive affairs accompanied by groundbreaking videos and fantastic cover art. Remember that "Fight the Power" only appeared on "Fear of a Black Planet" some several months after it "hit" - as did the B side release of "Rebel without A Pause" prior to "It Takes a Nation of Millions...".

This collection of singles reinforces their creative output, musicianship and legacy. The groups most commerciably accessible offerings are all here in their high-rotation-strong-unit-sales glory: the aforementioned "Fight The Power", "Hazy Shade of Criminal", "Shut Em Down", "911 Is A Joke" and the hugely popular "Give It Up", arguably the groups most successful single in terms of retail sales.

PE have crammed 18 cuts on to this release - but this just barely represents their release schedule. There are several cuts that have been released as singles and/or videos that are ommitted, including "Livin In A Zoo" (from the CB4 soundtrack), "Get off My Back", "Shake Your Booty", "I Stand Accused", "Louder Than A Bomb (Remix)", "Anti N*gga Machine/Burn Hollywood Burn" and the love-it-or-hate-it Anthrax thrash version of "Bring Tha Noize". A double disc edition with say, 28 tracks would have been nice - but then again, Def Jam/Universal dont want to cannibalise any trailing album sales the groups catalogue may still command!

Oh yeah, the reviewer "Viper" is the embodiment of the typical ignorant white American youth that PE originally set out to educate! Its unfortunate, but he of his ilk will never understand what true hip hop is or represents. "Hip hop" to Viper and most other Generation Y'ers constists of gun toting and talking about how much money you have and how many "biyatchs" youre doing. Grafitti? Breaking? DJ'ing? Beatboxing? Get outa here - that stuff's ancient, right Viper? Cats like Juvenile and Fitty Cent are the truth yeah!? heheheheh!!!!

Not all is lost though - I know plenty of young cats who take the time to check their history and educate themselves. Its just that people like Viper are already a lost cause - this album is the antithesis to his played out, thugged out BS so it will never get heard. But thats okay, cos dudes like me will never check for G Unit or Juvenile - so like PE's ratio of message:music, in the end there is some balance...

5 out of 5 stars Kids, put away your Paul Wall and Nelly albums...this is some REAL rap music.......2006-04-12

Def Jam finally did what was right and released a complete Public Enemy greatest hits compilation. All of the PE classics are here including "Fight The Power", "Welcome To the Terrordome", "Bring The Noise", and "Can't Trust It". If you are not familiar with PE, this compilation is a great opportunity for you to become acquainted with one of the greatest rap groups of all time.

Despite American schools' penchant for introducing foreign language at the middle-school level, research continues to prove that the earlier a child is exposed to a second language, the more likely she/he is to become bilingual. Based upon this tenet, in addition to Music for Little People's strong commitment to multicultural edu-tainment for children, the label has issued Uni Verse of Song as the first in a series of bilingual recordings especially created for children from preschool through fourth-grade levels. Featuring acclaimed artist Maria del Rey, she is here joined by a group of children singing standard American tunes in both English and Spanish. Oftentimes, verses as in "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," are sung in English and directly followed by a translation in Spanish, thus making the language come to life with both fun and content. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!.......2007-06-29

This CD has Spanish and English. I love that you get to hear the Spanish part right after the English in many cases. Then they do a word review after each song. The music is fun and happy.

5 out of 5 stars NOT SUNI PAZ, BUT STILL A MUST HAVE.......2007-05-27

A must have for anyone with kids or grandkids. I really like Suni Paz, but I am glad I have both. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love it! (and me too).......2006-05-04

I bought this music CD for my first child over 5 years ago. 2 more kids later I am buying it again. It has well-known songs in both English and Spanish languages. As a Spanish-speaking mother of three little kids ages 6, 3 and 1 I am very content with the way they translated the songs for the little ears. Despite the fact that my kids speak very well both languages, they love to hear the translation of frequently used words and I enjoy listening to the Spanish songs translated into English. It is absolutely a well spent money.

5 out of 5 stars Had it for years and love it!.......2006-04-11

Lost my original copy on a road trip and ordered another. We can't live without this. Our kids are bilingual and the mixing of the spanish and English in the songs has not been a problem. They know the words without turning off one language to hear another. A true bilingual is not translating in the brain...but is associating in both languages. Arroz is the white granules we eat and so is rice. There is no confusion for our 2 daughters and 6 niece and nephews who listen to these songs (and ALL are bilingual). This is a fun CD and very helpful!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for Children.......2006-03-16

I love this CD. I bought it for my two grandsons. They love it. She has such a wonderful voice. She also explains at the end of each song what the words mean. It's GREAT!

French is probably the only language in the world that can make the most trivial idea sound grandiloquent. Imagine what it can do when the poetic Romance language is set to children's songs. It entertains and educates, bien sûr (of course)! UniVerse of Song: French is the fun and informative follow-up to UniVerse of Song: Spanish, and seems an ideal tool for starting second-language learning with elementary phrases and basic songs. Jean Rene and his versatile backing combo help make a handful of bilingual kids into lively teachers. It doesn't matter if your native tongue is English or French--the record playfully teaches kids both languages by using common French and English nursery songs such as "Frère Jacques," "Alouette," the ever-delightful "Sur le Pont d'Avignon," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," "Wheels on the Bus," "London Bridge," and others. Along the way, listeners can also pick up useful expressions in French that sound, well, almost diplomatic. Now, bring on the Chinese and Russian versions of UniVerse of Song, and soon we can send kids to the UN Security Council. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Among my favorite kid's albums!.......2007-05-22

I think that this CD is so cute! The songs are well chosen favorites and for the most part (Happy Birthday excepted:) really very nicely performed. They alternate between French and English to teach French vocab. They use kids for alot of it and my 17 month old breaks out in a smile when she hears their little voices. It seems to be one of her favorites too.

4 out of 5 stars Useful .......2007-05-04

I found this CD useful for learning French myself and trying to teach my 1 year old son. The English translation is very handy when you are starting out in French and useful for instance while driving or when you are busy and can't refer to the written translations. The music is mostly very nice and some of the tracks are beautiful like "its raining its pouring" and "clair de lune"

As my French progresses I find the constant intrusions in English annoying and I prefer to CDs now that are all in French. Some of the English speaking in the CD is also very cheesy.

1 out of 5 stars Okay, but not that good........2006-06-04

This CD is okay for parents who want to teach their children French. But Jean Rene's voice sounds like that of Chuck E Cheese. Mr. Rene probably dressed up in the costume to record this album, so I am not a fan of it. I do not recommend this album to parents who do not like taking their kids to Chuck E Cheese's.

5 out of 5 stars Tried Many - this is one of the best.......2005-11-11

I took French immersion in school for a few years and have fortunately retained some of it. I wanted my kids to have some base in other languages in case they ever wanted to pursue such learning. Besides - most of the world speaks several languages! Kid's songs seemed like a natural way to start to do it. I tried several CD's, and this one is by far the best. The kids immediately recognized songs they knew in English, and began to learn the French words as well. The voices are very good, the kids especially. It is very engaging to my kids when they hear the other kids sing.

I have found the mix of some English and French to be very good for learning, and the quick lesson in the children's voices between songs is good, and fast (and you can always skip it right away too).

If you were more advanced - the English and French might be a bit intrusive. For those with bilingual children - I have also enjoyed the 100% French set called, "Mes Chansons Preferees" - by Kidzup. It has almost no recognizable English kid songs - but the French folk songs are surprisingly excellent and fun. My kids have a few favourites there too.

Overall - this is the one my kids enjoyed the most and gets played frequently.

2 out of 5 stars another disappointment!.......2005-11-08

Ugh! If you want to buy this to help your children learn French, be forwarned that there is VERY LITTLE French on this album. The female vocalist's voice isn't all that lovely and there is way too much English sung and spoken (and I can't quite understand why -- there doesn't seem to be much logic to when and why it's spoken). Sure, wheels on the bus is cute and fun, but it's mainly in English. What's the point??

"I've been to hell and back, I'm still looking good / I've found the fountain of youth, I've got the blues in my blood," sings Guitar Shorty on "Blues in My Blood"--one of the more autobiographical tracks, albeit one he didn't write, on his second Alligator album in three years. After working for decades with little to show for it, Shorty makes up for lost time, charging through unapologetically tough blues rockers such as "Sonic Boom," "Can't Get Enough" (not the Bad Company tune), and "What Good Is Life?" with the rough-and-tumble enthusiasm of someone half his 67 years. There are few surprises here--Shorty's throaty voice pummels through these tunes, pausing only long enough to make room for his fat, fluid leads to slice into the powerhouse rhythm section. Subtlety is not Shorty's strong point, and even when he accompanies himself on "Cost of Livin'" with just guitar and a tapping foot, it sounds like he's a caged tiger before feeding time. The title track concerns the average laborer's tough life, but this is primarily a blues album tied to the usual subjects of nefarious women doing Shorty wrong. In fact, his ex's phone prefix in "I Got Your Number" is 666. But nobody need look for profound lyrical insights when Shorty slings his molten guitar, pouring his psychedelicized solos like lava over anything in his path. Just push play and get out of the way. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings. Through the years, Shorty has performed with blues and R&B luminaries like Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, B.B. King, Guitar Slim and T-Bone Walker. Although he had recorded a handful of singles for a variety of labels, it wasn't until the 1990s that the wider world opened to one of the blues' most exciting performers. His albums since then all received critical acclaim, and his legendary live performances have kept him constantly in demand all over the world. His 2004 Alligator debut, Watch Your Back, became the best received, best selling album of his career. With his new CD, We The People, he's prepared to continue what he's started, taking his music, and his fans, to deeper places and even greater heights.

Guitar Shorty delivers a moving and soulful statement with We The People, featuring some of the most fire-coated fretwork he has ever laid down and the most thought-provoking songs he's ever recorded. He's playing with a passion and dedication almost unmatched in today's music scene. Always a celebrated live performer and now a top-selling recording artist as well, Guitar Shorty will no doubt find that We The People will once again make him the people's choice.

Produced by Wyzard and Brian Brinkerhoff, We The People finds Guitar Shorty singing and playing with ferocious urgency and a fierce righteousness. We The People burns with heavy rock and roll fire from start to finish, putting Shorty's infectious energy and guitar pyrotechnics on full display. And more than ever before, his songs tell the story of the harsh realities of everyday life in terms both stark ("We The People"), pointed ("Cost Of Livin'") and poignant ("Down That Road Again"). What he began with Watch Your Back, Shorty accelerates with We The People, creating an album that is as memorable for its menacing guitar work and defiant vocals as it is for its incisive and wide-ranging stories.

5 out of 5 stars Top Blues Album.......2007-03-09

3 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "SHORTY NEEDS TO STRETCH, TO MATCH "WATCH YOUR BACK!".......2007-02-28

As the "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", Shaq shouldn't have to apologize for his honest, hard-hitting blues reviews! I have liked Shorty ever since the first CD of his that I bought, "WATCH YOUR BACK". (See previous Shaq review's.) Shorty is truly a blues man, but as I've said before, he has a limited voice, that if not integrated, intelligently, with his guitar playing, results in a picture, that's not very pretty. This CD has a number of songs that just miss the target. I listen to electric blues constantly, and could not listen to this more than a few times. SUMMARY: Would I recommend buying this? No. But with that being said, If Shorty released another CD next week, I would buy it, knowing there's a 50% chance it would be better, because Shorty's heart is always in the right place, and that place is the blues. SUMMARY 2: If I knew someone, that knew electric blues like I (Shaq) do, and they wrote a review like this, I wouldn't buy it. (But, I'd read his next Shorty review, to see if the next one is recommended!)

5 out of 5 stars He is what he is. .......2006-08-31

GS is what he is. Either you like him or you don't. Or you think he's ok. That's my point. If you like his previous music, buy this disc right now, you won't be disappointed. If you don't like his previous work, don't buy this disc. If you think he's ok, wait until someone puts up a used copy on Amazon for half price. Follow my advice and you will be happy whichever group you are in.

3 out of 5 stars Where'd the blues go?.......2006-08-27

Somewhere along the line Guitar Shorty lost the meaning of the word 'subtle" when he hooked up with Alligator records. He just pummels through just about every song - loud singing, guitar playing, smashing drums, etc. Where's the blues? This is a rock CD.He has had some fine releases this past decade that mixed blues and rock but now he's moved to almost all rock. This is not his forte and this big change in his sound might gain him some new fans but leaves old fans like me puzzled.GET BACK TO THE BLUES!

5 out of 5 stars Shorty Stands Tall Among Blues Guitar Gunslingers.......2006-08-18

I stumbled upon Guitar Shorty's previous release 'Watch Your Back' and I have been hooked on him ever since. Couldn't wait to get my hands on his new CD 'We the People' and a 1st listen confirmed my urgency. If you like testosterone drenched blues guitar, this recording won't disappoint. The cuts are raw, the musicianship stellar and the lyrics are contemporary to the difficult times we find oursleves in. I saw him lives at Buddy Guy's club in Chicago this past April and was blown away by Shorty's Guitar playing and the talent of his band mates. An interesting note on Guitary Shorty, he helped school Jimmy Hendrix in his early days. This CD won't disappoint, you'll get more than your money's worth.

Now expanded, this edition features the regular, remastered album as well as a newly produced bonus DVD. Included on that disc are both new stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes of Scott Litt's evocative studio productions and a previously unreleased, 15-minute 1992 documentary featuring band interviews and in-studio clips, as well as song lyrics and a gallery of still photos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-10

Everything everyone else has said. But, I do have to add this one: The song Find the River ALONE could easily make this their best record. I lack the words.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Album, Good Sound Quality, Great Packaging!.......2006-02-26

This is not only R.E.M.'s best ever album but is very probably one of the best ever albums. A classic from start to finish with excellent songwriting, musicianship and like a true classic, the whole is a great deal more than the sum of the individual tracks; change anything about this album e.g. track order, track additions etc and you destroy it.

The whole theme of this album centres on death and mortality and suggests that there may be more to life than what's here on earth and perhaps the afterlife is not to be feared after all. The album's tour de force, "Man On the Moon" even alludes to this, suggesting that such diverse personalities such as Elvis, Andy Kaufman, Mott the Hoople, Isaac Newton, Fred Blassy may all be rubbing shoulders and goofing around in heaven if they "made the list, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah".

John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame has also done a brilliant job with the orchestrations on a few of the tracks and most notably on "Nightswimming". The album ends with my favourite track, "Find the River" which has simply wonderful lyrics that very poetically describes the feeling of a soul leaving this earth to head for the afterlife and an expectation of better things on the other side.

Without a doubt, Michael Stipes' lyrics have never exceeded the heights that they attained on this album. No fillers here as every track is a classic gem. How this album didn't witn the Grammy for Album of the Year, I cannot understand but I suppose like most all-time classic albums, it takes time before the true brilliance shines through and for the mainstream to catch on.

This version of the album has both a remastered cd and a dvd-audio that plays in 5.1 surround sound as well. The dvd sounds excellent and even accentuates some parts that you just don't hear on the regular cd. There is also a humorous short documentary on the making of the album interspersed with funny shots of the proprietor of the restaurant that coined the album title.

Great album, great tracks and great sound plus video make this an excellent buy. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars New Re-Release Package.......2005-11-06

If one album were to be fingered as R.E.M.'s masterpiece, this would be it. Automatic For the People is the most pensive, reflective and well-paced album of the band's career. With nothing really left to prove, R.E.M. could afford to please themselves first - something they've always done, to be sure, but usually with a sideways glance over their shoulder - and this time around, they run with it. The result is an album whose sum is much greater than the individual parts. The ratio of ballads to rockers is shifted heavily toward the former, which provides singer/lyricist Michael Stipe with the basic framework to stretch out lyrically. Mystifying tunes ("The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight", "Star Me Kitten") sit comfortably beside some of his most literal lyrics yet ("Everybody Hurts", "Man On the Moon"), while all are ensconced within creative and contagiously appealing melodies (did you happen to notice the sly four-note allusion to "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" buried in "Sidewinder"?). As the saying goes, death and taxes are the only things in life that are unavoidable, but this record shuns fear and is full of acceptance. Human frailty hovers over the proceedings like the ghost of Christmas past ("Everybody Hurts", "Sweetness Follows", "Man On the Moon"), painting mortality in a light that is downright agreeable. Not many artists are capable of making you smile while contemplating death. Taxes may still suck, but on "Automatic For the People", R.E.M. provide evidence that our ultimate destination need not be something to fear. A Tom Ryan

5 out of 5 stars Automatic Classic.......2005-05-07

Automatic for The People is R.E.M.'s follow-up to their greatest commercial triumph, Out Of Time. The success allowed R.E.M. a bigger forum to get their message out. Automatic For The People finds the band exploring such subjects as suicide, euthanasia, Republicanism, lost stars, groupies and pop culture. The album opens with "Drive" which riffs on the David Essex classic "Rock On". "Try Not To Breathe" deals with the subject of euthanasia and is sung from the perspective of an elderly person asking for understanding in his request. "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" lightens the mood a bit. Michael Stipe has fun with the song singing it in a "Subterranean Homesick Blues" style, even affecting an Elvis Presley imitation. He can actually be heard laughing on the track. Things get serious again with "Everybody Hurts" in which they broach the subject of suicide. They could've sounded preachy on the song, but Mr. Stipe sings with such compassion and understanding that song reaffirms life. "New Orleans Instrumental No. 1" is a throwaway track and "Sweetness Follows" is a very pretty number. "Monty Got A raw Deal" is the first song on the album about a late misunderstood actor. It's about Montgomery Clift and is quite powerful with some stirring music. "Ignoreland" is a hard-edged rocker that speaks out against the indifference towards people created by Republicans in their White House years of the 80's and early 90's. "Star Me Kitten" is their ode to groupies and is done in almost sleepy sound. "Man On The Moon" is the second actor song and probably the most famous song from the album. It is about the late Andy Kauffman and served as the title for the recent biopic starring Jim Carrey. It's got a honky tonk sound and some good slide guitar work by Peter Buck. The album closes with two slow numbers. "Nightswimming" is heavily laden with strings and is about longing for days gone by while "Find The River" closes the album on high note. The band finally seemed to be comfortable in the spotlight and they created a personal and enduring classic. The previously unreleased documentary is good and the DVD also contains Mr. Stipe's original handwritten and typed lyric sheets.

4 out of 5 stars Jazzy comforts........2007-02-08

This album marks the return to form for the Collective who release their best album since the classic `We The People'.

After a five years recording hiatus, the New York City acid jazz outfit is back with a leaner sextet lineup, a more Afro-Cuban focus, and the familiar weighty bass lines of Jonathan Maron on his Guild Starfire and Univox Coily.

Maron melds retro funk and terse tumbaos into killer ostinatos on tracks like "What If", the Afrobeat "DFU" (featuring Fred Wesley) and "Outermost".

His playing is chunky but my pick is the aptly titled ballad "Eat No Space".

Listen also to "Forgotten Travellers" and the organ led "6 for Fred".

The Latin cuts kick hard such as "Tito" and "Mambomongo" .

Don't miss the straighter Jazz cuts such as the Hancock cover "Speak Like A Child" that is truly brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Grammy Nominated Album is fantastic.......2006-12-09

I really enjoyed this album and think it is among the best albums they have produced. It is hard to take a band that is so good live and bring it into a studio. These guys have done it and it is fantastic. I just read that they were nominated for a Grammy. Congratulations guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great comeback..........2006-06-06

This release by groove collective feature a more focus approach on jazz rhythms with the already present latin flavor. This may have occurred due to the new signing with the Savoy Jazz label. At any rate, it's good music and still has a lot of the "collective" elements. Standout tracks are the loungy "what if" and the smooth "speak like a child". This one is worth getting.

2 out of 5 stars 4 years for this?!.......2006-05-31

1. I don't know who mastered this album but is has the worst sound quality I've heard in a very long time. For example, you can faintly hear the high hats and cymbals but the (mediocre) congo playing comes through loud, if not clearly.

2. This album features a ton of, well about 5, guest artists that exists seemingly to only water down the music even further. You should also be a fan of (amateur)horn playing because there are more horns on this album than any previously.

3. This album never gets going. They have, for the most part, abandoned ther funk/ soul style and are trying to play a more straight ahead style of jazz of which many other groups play much better.

4. 2 stars - because it's better than nothing.

5 out of 5 stars GC is still doin' it !!.......2006-04-29

Hey all you GC fans out there - it's time for a new groove! This is GC's 6th studio albulm (along with various live set CD's and so forth...). I'ts been 5 years since "It's All In Your Mind", and I'm loving this new one. We've got some worthwhile tracks going on here, and I'm just happy to here from them again. The first track, "Forgotten Travellers" is an appetizer that reminds you who GC is. Now, they're still doin' it with track 2, "DFU", which is a real catchy number, remnant of "Ransome" from "It's All In Your Mind". Of course, they have to give us one full vocal, so we've got #3, "what If", a funky track that actually makes you think about who you are as a person. I truly dig # 4, "Eat No Space". This is a sultry, moody slow song that reminds me of why I fell for this band to begin with. Then, "Tito" begins to wake you back up as a flavorful and melodically savvy track with some cool latin backgrounds. "KOG" is a great number that helps to satisfy the GC addict in all of us, with it's staple horn involvement, along with some intelligent keyboards coming thru (one of the best on the album, in my opinion). "Outermost" is another essential track that puts you in that quasi-spacy mood that we've all grown to love with GC. But just when you think that they've gone soft, the come strong with "Set Up," a spicy, funk-ridden, up-tempo groove that embodies the wild side of GC. "Speak like a Child" again gives us that loungy somber feeling that a true GC fan can't live without. They end with a neat live version of "Outermost" that's certainly worth hearing.
I encourage all GC fans to get this CD. All in all, it's a tad different, but they have lost none of their flavor and talent. As I construct a Groove Collective playlist on my computer, I'm pleased as punch to put these new gems in the mix. The more I listen, the more I appreciate this latest effort. A note to the band: In this day and age of "music" that is simply produced to sell, it is most refreshing to get this highly anticipated CD. Every time I introduce a listener to your material, they are impressed. Know that you have fans in the great state of Indiana!!

Yours Truly,

Eddie from Indy
