These Brit-POWER "Pop"sters GREATEST HITS 1990-2003.......2007-04-02
I'll admit I am normally not a fan of GREATEST HIT albums; but to me - Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Six Seconds: A Short Cut to TEENAGE FANCLUB...exceeded all my past expectations on that account. Many "Best Ofs" feature the band's recordings in chronological order from a debut through the band's last album, which may not have much variety in between. That is not the case for Teenage Fanclub though, they mix up and rearrange MOST of their best tracks on this Jam-packed 21 songs; clocking in at a GOOD 79 minutes worth of music!
So of course the band had to make some omissions, like "Metal Baby" - "December" - "I'll Make It Clear" and others.
It did however include my favorites: "Ain't That Enough" - "Star Sign" - "Sparky's Dream" - "Neil Jung" - "Radio" - "My Uptight Life", really all of them!
This is really all you need if you are at all interested in the absolutely brilliant songwriting skills of this trio: Norman Blake, Gerard Love & Raymond McGinley. Three talented minds heavily influenced by Big Star (you'll see the resemblance once you hear them) putting forth their best all on one Cd. 4766 Seconds...also include 3 new "hits" to add to this release(2003), along w/ 3 each from "Bandwagnesque"(1991) & "Howdy"(2001). There are 2 songs from "Thirteen"(1993)
< considered somewhat of a low point in the Fannies' career, but Thirteen has my favorite song "Radio" on it, also on this. Four songs...from "Songs from Northern Britain & Five songs from "Grand Prix"(1995)
If you are a fan, like me of Big Star #1 Record/Radio City, than I do believe you would REALLY like this. I still get chills once this Cd plays all the way through from opening track to closing track. - 5 STARS!
4766 Seconds of Pure Pop Genius........2005-03-10
4766 SECONDS is one of my all-time favorite cds, and in a world of dumbed-down popular music, Teenage Fanclub has never sounded better. This definitive "best-of" compilation is a work of pure pop genius. The band's warm, feel-good harmonies are reminiscent of a Sixties' band, a sweet blend of the Byrds, Beach Boys, and the Beatles, only with an edge, and the instrumentation is filled with fuzzy guitars, psychedelic riffs, and catchy hooks. The tracks on this compilation cd include "The Concept," "Ain't That Enough," "The World'll Be OK," "Everything Flows," "Star Sign," "Mellow Doubt," "I Need Direction" (my favorite song on the cd), "About You," "What You Do To Me," "Empty Space," "Sparky's Dream," "I Don't Want Control Of You," "Hang On," "Did I Say," "Don't Look Back," "Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From" (my second favorite tune), "Neil Jung," "Radio," "Dumb Dumb Dumb," "Planets," and "My Uptight Life." For the full effect, I recommend listening to this cd on an Apple iPod.

Simply the best!!!.......2004-11-10
I am not going to bother you lot with too many superlatives about this Scottish band. Needless to say there are ommisions to this 'Best Of' compilation such as Mount Everest and If I Never See You Again, and yet it is a quality retrospective of their work. They remind me of The Beach Boys, not only because of the close harmonies, but also the fact that a lot of the songs are very understated in tone. But also Nirvana, as they could prove just as comfortable with an accoustic guitar as an electric guitar. The MAIN reason why I purchased this album though is because of the 3 new tracks available on it. Of the three new songs I would have to rate 'Did I Say' as not only the best track on the album, but quite possibly one of the most beautiful and uplifting tunes of the last ten years by anyone. Forget Travis, Coldplay and all the other British music chancers of recent years, Teenage Fanclub are the real deal!
exactly what i was looking for.......2004-08-04
it's true: when placed up against some of the 70s punk and 80s college rock bands that influenced them so profoundly, teenage fanclub's 90s alterna-pop songs can sound hopelessly thin. but we can't fault the fannies for that. this is as good an assembly of guitar pop songs as any other band that ever saw a stage could put out. teenage fanclub did for me what matthew sweet never could: they made this inherently flawed (and often transparent) genre emotional and significant. i'm glad i got this record: it's sunny, it's catchy, it's uplifting, well-constructed, easy to listen to, and good for those nostalgia trips...and, let's be honest: it means i don't have to buy any more teenage fanclub records.
A brilliant collection.......2004-07-30
This is a well thought out collection of the band's music. A few songs are taken from each record, and so the less catchy songs from Songs of Northern Britain are placed alongside the very melodious earlier songs. The listener is thus aware of the increased maturity of the band with time. Songs like Your Love is the Place I Come From can be ignored on a single listening, but with a few listens, become favourites from the album. Rather in the same manner that Dylan's One Too Many Mornings can be ignored at first.
An essential piece of music for anyone who loves melodies and one of the best cds I've heard in a long time.

Not just Beatles sound-alikes.......2003-06-23
These guys are doing more than simply channeling the Beatles, circa 1966. They are not just a Beatles cover band.
They are performing original songs with a style and sound that go beyond what the Beatles were doing in the mid-sixties.
The Spongetones have a modern sound, but a simplicity that harkens back to Rubber Soul and Revolver.
For any fan of the Beatles, the Knack, XTC, Marshall Crenshaw, Cotton Mather, the Shazam, the Merrymakers, Nick Lowe, and/or Phantom Planet.
If you love the Beatles..........2001-10-02
After a five year absence, the princes of power pop have released Odd Fellows, an amazing collection of superbly written songs that combine early Beatles merseybeat, hook-filled punchy rock, and classic harmonies. The first impression one has of the Spongetones is that of pre-Sgt. Pepper Beatles having been transported to today. This is much more than just mimicry as these fun-loving rockers have captured the spirit of those early albums and updated the sound and style, much like The Rutles but without the cheese and onions.
Opening with the harmonica laden "You'll Come Running' Back", you'll swear it's a lost Beatles track that was left off Anthology 1. "Dark Brown Eyes" combines more of this retro sound with Everly Brothers harmonies and a dead-on Paul vocal style in a gentle love song. More snappy rhythms are to be found in "Eyedoan Geddit", a roaring up-beat party song that shows a big Cheap Trick influence. The gentle "Home" treats the listener with a great singable George Harrison melody backed with some superb finger-picking. As much as I like the Beatles, my two favorite songs on the album are those that show almost no Beatles influence. "Love Song To Mrs. Parker" is a sorrowful piano-driven song about chances not taken with lyrics such as "I would have held her that night / I would have pulled her from the fight / I could have made her smile just once/ In another time." The album ends with my other favorite, "Much Too Slow" with its heavy, punchy, power pop rhythms that remind me of the best of Badfinger. These four gents from North Carolina have soaked up the best of the last few decades of music and spew forth incredible songs as easily as most people breath. With just one album, The Spongetones have converted me to an instant fan!
Raspberries, Badfinger, Marshall Crenshaw, and Sponetones!.......2001-07-25
Add another group to the list of outstanding, unheralded Beatlesque artists. This collection is absolutely impeccable -- not a weak track to be found. Now if someone would just LISTEN, and not write it off immediately as "old folks" music!
Another great album from the hardest working band in the USA.......2000-08-19
Apparently, most of the earlier Spongetones albums are no longer in print. When I found this out after initially becoming a fan, I was sad. No more. After hearing "Odd Fellows," I am convinced that the only way to go from here is forward. I can't wait for their next release. It's ironic they're better known in Japan than in the US, isn't it? Keep writing those hits, Steve and Jamie. Every song is a keeper from here on out. What a band!!!
Spongetones continue to satisfy! Check them out!.......2000-06-23
The new CD by the Spongetones "Odd Fellows" contains new catchy pop selections with their unique odd twist: two of the lead vocalists sound creepily like Paul McCartney and John Lennon. I first heard them on the radio when "Oh Yeah" came out, and assumed that someone had unearthed some rare Beatles track. The Beatles sound-alike thing comes full circle on Odd Fellows with track #3: "On the Wings of a Nightingale" penned by Sir Paul himself!
But the Spongetones can definitely stand on their own musically and lyrically. Harmonies are tight, melodies are signable (if you're the type who likes to sing along in the car or shower), dance to, and have lots of fun listening to. There's a good mix of ballads ("Dark Brown Eyes") and rockier numbers ("Eyedoan Geddit" --- hint: sound it out... :-)
I'd recommend listing to the music samples and checking the CD out. If it appeals to you, definitely look into finding the group's earlier albums (although in my opinion "What-Ever Land" is a bit of a disappointment).

Album Description
In September of 1999 Flatpicking Guitar Magazine began producing an instructional audio CD to accompany each issue. In preparation for the first audio CD we recorded Kenny Smith and Curtis Jones playing a duet on the tune "Angeline the Baker" for the September/October 1999 issue. After listening to Kenny and Curtis play this tune together I realized the incredible beauty and power the sound of two acoustic guitars played in duo contained and the idea for New Standards was born.
In preparation for this project I contacted fifteen of today's most talented acoustic guitar players and asked each to compose an original tune for this CD. I asked that the tune take advantage of the special characteristics of the guitar. I wanted guitar tunes, not fiddle tunes or banjo tunes played on the guitar. I also asked that the tune be something that would be appropriate for a guitar duo. I paired the players together taking into consideration their unique playing styles and the logistical challenges of getting each pair in the studio together. All songs were recorded live with the exception of "Brittlebush."
The word "standard" can mean "something established and generally accepted" and it can also, among other things, mean "serving as a gauge or criterion." It is my hope that flatpickers will be inspired to learn these tunes and begin playing them at picking parties and jam sessions along with some of the old standards which reside in the flatpicking repertoire, so these tunes will indeed become new standards. I also think that the level of mastery demonstrated in the playing here will serve to "raise the bar" and thus effectively set new standards of excellence for all flatpickers to strive to attain. Thus we give you New Standards for Flatpicking Guitar. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
very odd order.......2003-08-01
I don't understand why this compilation is in this order. it would make a lot more sense, and would be a more interesting listen, if the songs were in chronological order. I agree with the other reviewer, there are some strange choices on this album. Even stranger is the total lack of selections from the album "The King" which, in my opinion, is one of the funniest releases in indie rock history. They definately weren't hits, but it's an important part of the bands' history. Also, only one song from "A Catholic Education" is just not fair for the fans. If you're already a fan of Teenage Fanclub then don't bother with this one. Spend the money on "Deep Fried Fanclub" instead.
THROW IT DOWN BIG MAN! THROW IT DOWN!!
Whoa, Fannies!.......2003-06-05
Wow, a Fannies best of, there's a mouthwatreing prospect.
This album is soooo close to being a 5*, but thanks to e few exclusions (the concept, the cabbage, Kylie's got a crush etc.), and the inclusion of a few dreary new tunes it stays at 4 (though a high 4). Anyone who has or has thought of TFC before HAS to buy this album. Simply the best songs you'll ever hear on one CD (though it's also available in a 2 disk set to allow full track length).
Again, any fan of Big Star, Byrds, Nirvana etc. must by this album. TFC are one of the top 5 bands of the past 10 years, and it's still one of the best albums you'll ever hear, ever. What more do you need to know. BUY IT NOW.
