Feeling and warmth..........2007-04-22

There some rare circumstances where some people who have less than perfect singing voices can deliver a song on feeling, some may call it "heart'. Jimmy Durante, Loius Armstrong and George Burns were among those I am talking about. Though I don't think that I have seen any of Ms. Dietrich's movies, this CD is quite impressive. Even though it is all in German (which I do not speak) and even though she talks her way through some parts of some songs, Dietrich sings with feeling and warmth; especially a kind of "pathos".

I thought I heard something about Dietrich leaving Germany under the shadow of the Nazis, militarism and war; that might explain her identification with American folk songs such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Blowin' in the Wind"-

P.S. "Blowin' in the Wind" is one of my favorite songs and I have many interesting versions to compare: Bob Dylan; Peter, Paul & Mary; The Kingston Trio; Eddie Albert; Percy Faith

Marlene.......2005-07-04

I have many of her CDs but this is the first where all the songs are sung in German. She's the best!

not so great.......2002-09-12

The last 3 or 4 songs are old, good recordings. The other songs were more recently recorded and it sounds like an old lady with a 2 pack-a-day habit of no-filter camels was singing. Yuck.

So I ripped the last few songs and burnt them onto another CD.

Where have all the flowers gone?.......2000-10-12

This is an all-German CD of Marlene's. The German version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" (Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sin) is on this CD; the French version (my favorite) and the English are on "The Essential Marlene Dietrich" CD available from Amazon.com UK.

Nostalgia in black and white.......2000-01-31

Don't think of « Lili Marlene » only as a popular song among german soldiers during World War II. It's mainly the story of a girl standing under a street lamp in front of barracks, while the fog is darkening the streets of a little town ; and who will stand with her when the night falls and the shadows are swirling around? Although there are a few « modern » songs on the CD, most of the songs recorded here are nostalgic of bygone days, of men who wan't come back, of flowers on the graves. The voice of Marlene Dietrich is a bit hard and hoarse, a voice in black and white. It reminds you of all these fascinating movies in black and white of the thirties (think of Lang, Murnau,...). Technically speaking, the rythm, here and there, is too fast, and the recording is not very good, but it's not so important. Just listen and and take a dive in the crooked and foggy (and disturbing) streets of pre-war Europe and the smoky cabarets of Berlin.

Very pleasent discover.......2003-09-11

I used to know only 3 songs of this group : "Rome", "Dschinghis" Khan, and "Moscow". I discovered the other songs of this CD with very big pleasure. The german language is difficult (for me) to listen, so this why I put only 4 stars. The melody of the songs is very easy to follow, and even my son of 5 years old (french educated) use to sing with me when I listened to this album.
The songs are the originals +++.

Old Memories.......2003-04-04

I was stationed in Germany in the 70's and 80's, when Dschingis Khan was at the peak of their performing. This CD brought back old memories, and I could actually feel the ambience of the smokey Gasthauses I used to frequent. The songs were all favorites, except for Verrater, which I never have liked. I have played this CD enough so my wife is sick of hearing it!

Catchy tunes, even if they aren't the latest thing.......2000-07-02

The members of this band were hand-picked and put together, much like the Monkees were. In fact, their music is sort of a mixture of the Monkees and Abba. Most of these tunes are from the 70's and 80's, but they're still great. My favorites are "Dschinghis Khan" (written for the Grand Prix Eurovision contest) and "Klabautermann" (a sea spook). They may not be 90's-type songs, but virtually every one is a real toe-tapper.

A miracle well worth waiting for........2001-03-16

It's a happy situation that the Comedy Harmonists are still very much a presence in the world of cinema and CD. I give a special welcome and recommendation to the five volume series of which this CD is Volume 2.

As a music lover who can remember buying and listening to the Comedy Harmonists on the original little quickly-spinning 78s, I can assure all those reading this that CDs such as the one here under review give the best possible recreation. Apparently the group sang at only moderate volume. All the 78s I once possessed had only a low sound signals on them. The grooves barely moved. Sometimes the surface noise was more audible than were the performers. So it has been a miracle, worth waiting for, to discover that modern restoration work can remedy all this, allowing the group's vocal balance, blending and sonority to be easily and clearly appreciated.

sweet and endearing..........2006-04-09

Imagine someone singing a song like "Er heisst Waldemar"..
I laughed so hard...basically its about love being blind..apparently she falls in love with a knucklehead, no class, a total bungler...Everywhere she looks she sees Waldemar...she names her dog and her car and chauffeur Waldemar...

What makes her so good is that I was able to understand her German perfectly after 6 months in Germany because she was originally swedish the words don't come too fast...

but Kann die Liebe eine Sunde sein? Bei kussen beginnt eine Frauen zu bluhen! Davon geht die Welt nicht unten...and the more idealistic..Auf einer kleiner Welt..and of course.. Erzaehl Mir Ein Maerchen

I can't find the CD i had in Germany anywhere..but she is a blow me away artist..heralding back to a more idealistic era

WONDERBAR DIE LEANDER!!!!!!!.......2002-03-01

I bought this cd from the german Amazon.And it's one of the best Zarah recordings i have ever heard.I am from Sweden so i have been able to get my hands on some vinyl-Zarah but this cd tops everything.The sound is clear and Zarah's voice is dark.My absolute favorit is "Cabare Paris".
I really recommend you all Zarah Fans to buy this cd...

Not the original recordings.......2000-03-10

This set of recordings, on BMG/Ariola, was originally issued in 1975, and all her hits were re-recorded some 40 years after Zarah was in her prime. Only buy if you are interested in listening to drab versions of once-great songs. The same record company also released a one-CD version of this album, titled Die Grossen Erfolge von Gestern, which is just as bad only shorter. Nowhere on the jewel box does it mention these are not the original recordings, so I assume BMG is just interested in parting people with their money rather than showcasing what made Zarah great in the first place.

Clean sound, cool voice.......1999-11-24

This recording is of an astonishingly clear sound (it has been digitally remastered) and it includes some of the best known songs attached to ZL: e.g. Die Rose von Novgorod and Schatten det Vergangenheit. They show her sensual voice at its best. Recommended!

When his Political Stances Inflamed the Peronistas, He was Deported in 1966 and Fled to Europe, Eventually Settling in East Germany in 1973. Careful---It's Mostly in German!.......2007-05-01

This collection gives a fine overview of Dean Reed's later (1970s-1986) music career. It's even finer, if you happen to speak German, 'cause all the songs, with 4 exceptions, are in German. That's because Dean spent the last 20 years of his life living in East Germany. Still, for those curious to hear the "Red Elvis", this is well worth their time.
