Album Description

Mondo Generator was originally formed by Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) in 1997. Recorded by Producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver, System Of A Down) at Dave Grohl's Studio 606, Dead Planet: SonicSlowMotionTrails picks up exactly where the group left off: creating thunderous, raw rock 'n' roll. The album takes the listener on a sonic journey that steamrolls through musical boundaries. The band is co-headlining the second stage at Ozzfest 2007.

4 out of 5 stars The Return.......2007-07-20

Only a month after his former band released the killer "Era Vulgaris", Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator upped the ante with "Dead Planet". This album is easily the best release by Nick and the band. Not a bad track in the mix. This album was previously released in the UK but does not contain the final three songs. Listen to this along with "Era Vulgaris" it is like Nick never left. Not to compare it to much to QOTSA because this stands on its own as a very good piece of work. I look forward to seeing the band perform these songs live.

4 out of 5 stars A mazing!.......2007-02-25

After hearing the title track, i was very impressed. and after all these listens that song still remains to be my favorite. very catchy, unique melody. I pretty much fell for this album, listening to it every-day for a week when i first for got it. This album has a lot of gems and a few duds. "like a bomb," "life of sin." But the others stand out. " lie detector, all the way down, she only owns you, so high," which so high was also on [drug problem] titled "so high, so low." Two short maniac songs, " all systems go, basket case." And you have guessed it, lots of screaming on the majority of the album. but when nick's not yelling his voice is melodic and clear. I have always enjoyed his voice, screaming too but regular, he has good pitch. As heard clearly on track 13," paper thin." Which actually is probably the 2nd best song on the album. There's also three cover songs. Including the ramones, " mental hell." and, Johnny cash's, " sam hall."(hidden) Johnny cash you say? But believe it or not, it sounds cool. Enjoyable, different. If you like quotsa and some of nicks vocals on quotsa tracks, " Another love song, quick and to the pointless, wake up screaming, six shooter, jet pilot, etc." You shall love this. Yes because its an import, its a bit pricey. Almost 30. But in the stores, its 20. It is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to a Singer/Songwriter/Finger-Picking Monster.......2006-01-27

Drawing from many of his previous albums, this recording is a great introduction to Brooks Williams' music, music that will have you laughing, dancing (in a folky kind of way), pondering big questions, and saying "Wow!" (when you hear his finger picking guitar style). Not a bad mixture!
Some of his earlier work will make some people think of James Taylor (Brooks has said that his record company at the time was pushing him in that direction), but that is only a jumping off point. As you listen further you'll hear Brooks developing his own voice and refining his MONSTER guitar chops.
Many of his songs have a "story-teller" feel to them ("Late Night Train","Caves of Missouri", or "Seven Sisters"). The lyrics and guitar work draw you in and remind you of a comfortable conversation with an interesting old friend. Other of Brooks' songs relay a more spiritual message ("We will Dance Someday", "If I Never") that celebrates and challenges at the same time. And, for you guitar freaks, Brooks lets loose with some tasteful fretwork on several instrumentals ("Before Coffee", "When the Dentist Dreams").
Simultaneously relaxing and stimulating, this is a great CD for feeding your head and your heart. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best unplugged CD's this year........2001-09-19

Dead Sea Cafe is the best of Brooks Williams. The CD features a collection of some of Brooks' songs from the past decade. I would not go so far as to call this a greatest hits collection as I just learned of this artist a couple of weeks ago. Most of the CD is just Williams and his guitar, however he is such a good guitarist that he fills the soundscape. Brooks has a very nice voice and his songs are very literary. The CD reminds me a little of early James Taylor or Kenny Loggins. Very nice discovery - .

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I bought this year!!.......2001-04-04

If there were one word to describe Brooks Williams, it would be amazing. This man is one of the most talented guitarists I have EVER heard. I saw him perform 2 times over Christmas and he is a virtuoso in every sense of the word. When he plays his guitar, he does not play one part, but two or three parts at once. His music is relaxing and enjoyable to listen to. If you love folk music, you NEED to have this album. Dead Sea Cafe is a collection of Brooks's best works. I LOVE THIS CD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very fun stuff!.......2006-03-20

I have had this CD for a while now, having bought it from the band at Dragon*Con. I must say first off that the band sounds much better live than on the CD, as the production sounds a little muddy. All in all, though, this is a very enjoyable cd. The songs are catchy, and may stick in your head. The sound is deliberately Western (as you should have figured out by the title and cover art), and the band is from Texas. My friends call this a "Goth Cowboy Band" - and that is pretty much their look as well as sound. Misfits meet Johnny Cash here. Kitschy? Yes, but very, very fun. See them live if you can. Their other cd's are good too.

4 out of 5 stars the Misfits go western.......2004-01-28

I think the title says it all. Combine the Misfit's love of B movies and mix in the american western. While Ghoultown is every bit as alternative country as it is punk, I think it is a good combination. This isn't a CD you will listen to every day but it still finds it't way into my CD changer on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2003-11-30

After reading the first review here, I felt like I should defend these guys. I personally thought the western theme was refreshing and well done. Sure it's got influence from old westerns, but this is not some kind of Tex Ritter or Gene Autry outfit. They play in the creepy stuff like ghosts and zombies to make it modern and interesting. The band overall are good musicians and the music is well delivered, even the vocals. It's probably not everyone's thing, but if you like a little Glenn Danzig along with your Johnny Cash, Ghoultown is it!

1 out of 5 stars not worth my dime.......2003-11-04

I bought this on a whim. bad move. it's definitly unique, but annoying. it's a western, and i mean the whole album. they sound like an old western movie, and his voice is nothing to write home about, in fact i'm wasting my time with this. if your into goth rock and dark stuff, do NOT waste your time with this.

I picked this Cd. up at a record store for the art work. Besides awesome artwork, it also contain's some awesome material too. The music buuilds like a wave throughout the Cd. It is VERY HEAVY. Not fast, just slow churning riffs that remind me of Black Sabbath on mescaline. Buy it A.S.A.P. You will not be dissapointed. This is the best band in the underground.
