Lesser bands might have been put off their stride by the death of their lead singer, but not AC/DC. No sooner had Bon Scott met his whiskey-sodden end in 1980 than AC/DC recruited a new singer, Brian Johnson--who sounded almost exactly like Scott--and released, in Back in Black, the biggest-selling album of their career. For Those About to Rock...We Salute You is a suitably triumphant follow-up. The cannon-punctuated title track--the most auspicious marriage of music and artillery since Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture"--still provides a spectacular finale to AC/DC concerts. For Those About to Rock also confirmed that Johnson's lyrical preoccupations were broadly congruent with those of his predecessor: "Let's Get It Up" and "Inject the Venom" are as subtle as their titles sound. This is a record Beavis and Butthead would describe as "cool"--and, as usual, they'd be right. --Andrew Mueller

5 out of 5 stars Best AC/DC album hands down.......2007-06-06

I've never claimed to be a big fan of AC/DC, and my best friend loathes them. However, I've been able to tolerate them and respect them from a musicians' point of view, and who could forget the classic tracks on the multiplatinum Back in Black LP. However Back in Black was still 80s heavy rock mainstream garbage to me in my mind. I couldn't get past the cliche lyrics of sex, wine, women, drugs, and the AC/DC cliches such as guns, fire, and hell.

Well, one night I was at a gig, with a band that I'm really great friends with. In between sets they threw on the track "For those about to Rock". I forgot how great that song was and I hadn't heard it in so long. I decided to pick the album up within the next few weeks and surprise, it dropped in price and it came with all of the original LP art.

However! There was a sticker on the front that said "remastered" and I was a bit skeptical. I mean, why fix something that isn't broken? Nonetheless I bought it and popped it in my car stereo. The explosive sound of this album just floored me. The masters sounded so good and the songwriting on this album is top notch.

I decided if any AC/DC album was worth picking up and mentioning to friends, FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK was the one to recommend. No euro-trash here. No cheesy 80s drivel here. FTATR is actually a very modern sounding record! Nothing wrong with classic albums, but this was a nice touch. Every song leaves with a hard hitting ending, and the next song punches you right in the face not a second later. The tracks glide into each other seamlessly and without flaw. I have no complaints here.

I lost Back in Black a long time ago and I haven't really missed it much. The same with The Razor's Edge. But if I lost this one I would probably pick it up the next day. Great songs, great sound, great price.

5 out of 5 stars most creative chording and drumming the band ever did.......2007-04-26

I agree with almost all of the positive comments on this great album but wanted to add my own two cents worth.

As a guitarist and drummer myself I have to say that this is malcolm's best album by far as a guitarist/songwriter (even if the songwriting isn't as exciting as that of back in black), his chords are far more interesting than his typical work.

Angus too, his contributions to the songwriting are excellent throughout the album, and his lead playing is full of intense raging emotion in this album, if such a thing could ever be said of his playing.

the bass playing is typical ac/dc, great playing, great tone, really simple and dark, occasional cool bends and riffs, but sitting perfectly in the mix with rudd/s drumming and malcolm's excellent playing.

Also definitely worth noting is that compared to everything else I've ever heard by one of my favorite straight ahead classic rock drummers (talking about Phil Rudd of AC/DC), this album has by far the most amazing drum playing of any ac/dc album. Not something one generally thinks of with AC/DC, but Rudd is largely responsible for the tone, feel and memorable rhythm riffs. Throughout back in black and most of the band's career up to and including for those about to rock (after which he frustratingly left the band for many years causing AC/DC to lose a major character of their signature sound until his relatively recent return), Rudd has been vital to the success of AC/DC with his incredible feel, understanding of the songs, and great tone (this is a man who's always known how to tune his sonar drums perfectly, listen to their live stuff from the bon scott days, his drums still sounded incredible even with low budget unproduced small venue live recordings). Throughout for those about to rock Rudd is permitted to contribute more than his typical creativity into fills (or, as I understand it, just forced his musicianship onto the recordings against the will of the young brothers, which is part of why he eventually quit due to the young brothers not understanding how unique and important he was to the band's sound). Also the engineers and producer (Mutt lange) did a great job of bringing his sound to the front of the mix while still leaving plenty of room for everyone's sound to come through evenly. This is an album you can play air drums to with the best of keith moon's and john bonham's triumphs. Well done Phil Rudd! I take off my hat to you.

Also this is the last album where Brian's voice sounded brilliant. After this is really did start losing it's tone and becoming more of a noisy scream, albeit still the best noisy scream I've ever heard.

Compared to later flops like flick of the switch, fly on the wall, the terribly produced who made who soundtrack (talk about inconsistent engineering!), and even the best of their later work such as thunderstruck (by now on their third drummer I believe after rudd's departure, AC/DC still wondering why their feel just isn't as good after "for those about to rock" hahaha), I would put this album at the top of the heap, equal to back in black in many ways, slightly better in a couple of ways, and a little bit less great in a couple of other ways notably, songwriting isn't quite as amazing, but still really good).

This and back in black are the best two brian johnson led ac/dc albums period. After this things went down hill with occasional good songs but nothing outstanding and many filler songs in albums that were just not interesting to listen to at all. They've gotten it back together recently with Rudd and the original lineup and the sound is back, but sadly the young brother's just don't write like they used to, and johnson just doesn't have the tone any more, so a great rhythm section and great players just are getting a little too spent now to come up with the magic even if they now sound almost like they did in the highway to hell days (oddly, but that's what I think they sound like anyway now).

4 out of 5 stars Another level.......2007-03-21

Brian Johnson helps take the band to another level after the mega successful Back in Black. Though not as much of a commercial hit as the former, this album showcases some extraordinary guitar work by Angus Young.

4 out of 5 stars Play This On 10.......2007-01-25

Ac/Dc is amazing....they have been around since the 70s and have never changed their sound...they still do heavy blues tinged rock better then ANYONE in the business
this is the 2nd release with Brian Johnson fronting the band...to those that thought the unbeatable Back In Black was a fluke this is proof that Brian has what it takes...this CD is powerful! If you play it at a low volume it still sounds good but it loses over half of it's punch...the guitar tones really only come out when you crank it up to 10...which is how rock and roll is meant to be...the title cut 'for those about to rock' is rock and roll perfection...a call to all rockers to unite and sing loud and proud, complete with cannon sounds...very powerful...followed by 'put the finger on you' extremely catchy and melodic and full of power,'let's get it up' more sexual charged lyrics backed by very melodic rock fury...'inject the venom' more power...unfortunately the rest of the album doesn't quite keep up that pace...but come on,how can you follow up a start to finish perfect album like Back In Black with another album that is absolute perfection...they come close...snowballed,breaking the rules, night of the long knives and spellbound are not quite up to the beginning tracks but they still ROCK with power...and evil walks rocks hard and is right up there with the beginning of the album...and then there is c.o.d which in my opinion is ac/dc's most underrated song...it is awesome....this CD is a great example of what rock should be

upside - C.O.D..the title cut 'for those about to rock' let's get it up,put the finger on you, inject the venom and evil walks...great rock...great production...great solos and rhythms and Brian Johnson screams with the best of 'em

the downside - the second half has some songs that get a little slow and lose a little steam but it still rocks

the bottom line - a fantastic follow up to the unbeatable 'Back In Black'..if you are just starting out with Ac/Dc start with Back in Black and Highway to hell and then check out this one and Dirty Deeds...honestly,rock doesn't get much better then this...this is powerful and you should run out and buy it...donutman says so!!!

1 out of 5 stars Review #100, Baby.......2007-01-10

I have now listened to all but a few of AC/DC's albums, and I would probably declare this one the second worst (with Highway to Hell being a painfully obvious last place). This was an absolutely horrible follow-up to the phenomenal "Back In Black"; it deserves every ounce of its low ratings and isn't the slightest bit underrated. I don't even know how this band ever got popular; their style is horribly repetitive and simple. If nothing else they were able to influence the future awesomeness of Jet and other such bands, but it's releases like this that make me wonder why the heck classic rock bands even have fans. I don't care for Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Rush, Styx, or other such bands. Oh, I also loathe The Who more so than any of those bands. People need to stop being so trendy and liking all the albums considered "classics" and find some more recent albums to consider classics since the 2000's are shaping out pretty good as rock music goes. As for this specific album, though, it has one good song; the title track. Bands use this technique often when they only have one good song on the album; they make it a hit. The rest of this album isn't as heavy as "Back In Black" and really it's boring enough to be classified a "snoozer". One star is what I'd give it; the AC/DC albums that you should buy are "High Voltage" and "Back In Black". Didn't like the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Solid tunage!.......2007-05-10

Good CD, good tracks. Not the Toronto Cast that I saw; and it was missing a couple of the songs from the musical, but it captured quite well the essence of the musical, and the singers have strong voices. All in all I'd give it a 4/4.

4 out of 5 stars Queen fans will be entertained by this Ga-Ga World Musical!.......2007-01-16

When I first listened to this soundtrack, I was blown away by the sheer variety and vocal talent of the performers. By the time the last track was finished, I felt the urge to see the show live. Imagine blending Queen and Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four into a musical. A very interesting concept, to say the least.

Queen fans will be entertained by the futuristic story of the Bohemians' struggle to reclaim the unfeeling, unthinking, cyber-controlled world of planet mall, formerly known as earth, against the massive mega-corporation, Globalsoft and its leader, the Killer Queen. The only things that matter in this world are marketing and commercialism, all musical instruments are banned, and all music is computer generated. No need for free thought, because the consequence of expressing it is a punishable offence.

Although the critics seem to be disappointed with the performance, any fan knows that many critics in the past never seemed to "get" Queen to begin with. And this product is for the fans of Queen, like the ones that fill the Dominion Theatre for this show regularly.

The music is great, the cast of singers are spot-on, and the story will make you think twice about "the establishment" and the internet-culture lifestyle. It may also make you stop to remember the ones that rocked and are no longer with us.

3 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT SHOW, BUT NOT A TOO WORTHY CAST RECORDING.......2006-08-15

`We will rock you' follows the suit Abba successfully made in the past with their musical `Mamma Mia': putting excellent household-known songs on stage in the form of a musical. There is no need to ramble too much over the meaning, impact and place the English rock band `Queen' and their lead singer Freddie Mercury have in the history of modern music: millions of sold records, an everlasting fan base and hit songs ranging from `Bohemian Rhapsody' to `Those were the days of our lives' are enough to mention.

Two out of three original surviving members of the band, Brian May and Roger Taylor teamed up with a well know English writer and comedian Ben Elton and Robert DeNiro himself as a producer to transfer `Queen's' hits to the stage in form of a story. The result is an entertaining and vivid 3-hour show called `We will rock you'. After its premiere in London's Dominion theatre, it has been filling the seats of this huge place (one might even consider it as a concert hall) night after night and the show was successfully transferred to Spain, Las Vegas, Russia, Germany and Japan.

Ben Elton wrote an interesting futuristic story. The action takes place 300 years in the future. The completely globalized world is run by a cyberspace company called `Globalsoft' presided by The Killer Queen. All the musical instruments and music composing, apart from the one created by the computer programs are banned. A group of young rebels oppose such state and led by a young Galileo Figaro and his girl Scaramouche try to find the instruments and introduce to the world the sound of rock and roll that has been long gone from everyone's mind. This may sound as a trashy plot, but it works surprisingly well on the stage. The actions of the main characters are told through numerous `Queen' hit songs: `Killer Queen', `I want to break free', `Who wants to live forever', `A kind of magic', `Another one bites the dust', `Radio Ga Ga' and `Bohemian Rhapsody' to name just a few. Apart from that, Ben Elton wrote the additional dialogue to further explain the story and for this he has come up with some of his most funny lines. The theatre audience kept bursting into giggling during the performance I attended, whether it's about the mentioning Brittney Spears, Victoria Beckham or Lord of the rings.

This cast recording featuring the original cast members was recorded live during one of the performances at Dominion Theatre. And even though it includes all the main musical numbers and somewhat evokes the great atmosphere of this show, it does not satisfy completely. The main problem stems from the fact its singers do not have the top vocal power this kind of music simply must have. Tony Vincent, who plays Galileo here, is not a bad vocalist, but here he is too thin, and almost unnoticeable, very much unlike the current Galileo in London, the Swedish-born Peter Johansson. Vincent also makes a habit of singing with a deliberate and rather annoying echo in his voice. Sharon D Clarke's Killer Queen is only a slight improvement, yet miles away from Mazz Murray's freezing vocals in the current cast. Hannah Jane Fox makes a very good Scaramuche, one must admit. One of the unwritten rules of the musical theatre has been that inappropriate (or shall we say for this occasion, a rather average) casting can hurt and ruin the best of materials (if you want the best of examples, try the 1994 LA recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's `Sunset Boulevard' with Glenn Close singing the lead). This recording alas confirms that fact.

But if one can put aside all that, what you do get on this CD is a very good instrumental rendition of `Queen's' greatest hits delivered by a disappointing cast. It would be interesting to hear this material with different people singing the roles. The CD comes with the production photos, cast and creative time listings, but with no lyrics or a synopsis. `Queen' aficionados will note some minor lyrical changes made to fit the plot.

The show is a miracle to see and hear live on stage and the experience will stay with you for a long time. In the end, however, it deserves a much better recording if it wishes to match it.

1 out of 5 stars Just dire.......2006-07-04

I struggle to understand who would actually want to buy this CD. It's far too "musical" to appeal to rock fans and far too "rock" to appeal to the traditional fans of musical theatre. Queen devotees would deplore what's being done to their favourite tracks and nobody who doesn't already like their music is going to be won over buy this over-hyped waffle. Surely this is targetted at those who saw the musical, who are the one group of people that would never want to be reminded of it. I'd say it was Ben Elton's lowest moment but it appears he's trying to sink even lower lately so it's too early to make that call. This sort of stuff is just fodder for those "wasn't that decade crap" TV shows. Watch for its appearance in the "What were they thinking in 2005" video podcast released some time next decade.

And is anyone else suspicious that the early reviews for this release not only give it five stars but also read like an advertisement for the stage production? Especially the ones written by people who have never written an amazon review before but feel the need to tell us about how sexy the actors look and even tell you about their past credits. Hmmm. Do I smell covert advertising?

3 out of 5 stars It's passable, but the good JUST outweighs the bad........2006-05-05

It really is a shame that the album released here is so uneven. Apparently, trying to stuff as many Queen songs into a musical as possible wasn't a very good idea.

"Radio Ga Ga" is a the songs that's been unfortunately altered for the worse, which is a shame; I like the SOUND of this version, the vocals in particular, but I just can't get past the idiotic new lyrics that were added to "update it." It would have been nice if "update" entailed more than referring to the Internet as much as possible, but I digress. "Killer Queen" is in the same boat; it sounds good (although I'm not a big fan of the Queen's vocals), but the lyrics just wreck it.

Actually, scratch that - I don't like the Queen's vocals in general. "Play The Game" almost works, but the rest of the tracks that the Killer Queen character is featured on? Avoid like the plague.

I don't quite get the point of including "Ogre Battle" and "Flash" here; they really add nothing to the album, beyond making the track list a bit longer.

Some of the songs fare well, though. I like "I Want To Break Free" and "Somebody to Love," and if it wasn't for the fact that I can't justify giving the album four stars, I'd tack on an extra one for "Seven Seas of Rhye." That one song is how I justify owning the album, though that's more reflective of the album's quality than that of the song.

This album might have the only version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" I've heard to date that I'm not a fan of. It's not bad, but the Queen's overly hammy vocals (again) ruin the end of the song and there's no explanation why there are three different characters singing the song.

This isn't Queen, but you shouldn't be expecting that if you buy this album. Eveb so, save for some of the lyrical atrocities that were commited to give the show a semblance of a plot, I feel that the cast does a capable job with the material.

That said...this won't be replacing the Queen CDs in my collection anytime soon. Not by a long shot.

5 out of 5 stars The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

5 out of 5 stars A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

5 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

One could get worked up over the fact that this is effectively an EP of new songs rounded out by another bunch of coconuts from Roddy's hyperexploited catalog. But what's to complain about really? The single "If We Fall in Love Tonight" purrs like a Porsche. The ripe cover of the Leo Sayer hit "When I Need You" is vintage fromage. There's a reminder or two from the '70s that our man's never been anything but an ol' romantic. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Love hits.........2007-01-28

"If we fall in Love Tonight" is a very enjoyable Soft Rock Collection from Rod Stewart's previous releases, with 3 additional new radio songs; A very relaxing ballad. Almost all Stewart's nice old love songs exist on this album and although this is a great CD, it surely does not offer a good overview of all his past good songs and hits.
`Never a Dull moment', `Atlantic Crossing' and `A night in town', is where any new fan of Rod Stewart should really start.
I am very happy owning this CD.

5 out of 5 stars BEST.......2007-01-10

I happen to be a huge Rod Stewart fan. This is probably my favorite!

2 out of 5 stars Thank You Rod.......2005-12-30

I don't know if I could ever fully express my gratitude to Rod.. A couple of years back, I had a blind date.. Well, she was more attractive than I ever could have expected; I was at a loss for words and I simply just froze up. I had gone into this date with no expectations; I didn't bring flowers; I simply just honked when I arrived at her place of residence.. When we started to leave for our destination(on the phone,I had originally flat out lied and told her I was broke and could only afford Subway; and to go dutch at the dollar cinema)she was cold. When I was able to compose myself and actually attempt to make conversation, I got nothing. She clearly wasn't impressed with me. I attempted to smooth things over by telling her that she didn't look anything like I had expected; she expressed the same sentiment to me, but unfortunately, before we met, she told me that I had a gorgeous voice.. Anyway, there we were driving; her head turned towards the window; I'm quickly grasping for any possible solution to pull me out of this hole.. Then, I remember, I had taken my Grandmother out to lunch earlier in the week, and she had left a Rod Stewart album in my stereo. Normally, I wouldn't think twice about it, but this was no ordinary Stewart disc. No, this wasn't his humdrum work from the early '70s, or that lame duet with Jeff Beck.. this was the sensual guarantee of being asked in at the end of the night.

I started with the first track, "If We Fall In Love Tonight"; I needed to get the message to this girl that it was okay, She could let go, and who better to help me express this sentiment than Rod? As the vocal started, she actually turned her attention away from the passing traffic and commented that she thought she had heard this one before, but couldn't put her finger on the time or place.
It didn't get me very far, but at least she was talking..
Then, I skipped ahead to "For The First Time"; at that point, she spoke again, and said that this one always reminded her of a root canal. I didn't understand, but then she explained that there was a version of this that the guy who did the song "Footloose" did, and when she had some dental issues a few years back, she heard the song, over and over again while sitting in the chair.
This wasn't going at all as I had planned, so I moved ahead to "When I Need You"; all of the sudden, I felt an arm come around my shoulder- she giggled and whispered in my ear, "you know what this one is really about, don't you?" Well, I had no clue what she was talking about, but what difference did it make? I was finally getting somewhere, so I smiled and nodded, and let the track play in it's entirety.

When, "Have I Told You Lately" began, I felt her hand on my knee. She told me that for some reason, this remix took her back to high school, when a video by the group "Color Me Bad" was popular, in which a man and woman were trapped together in an elevator.. I couldn't believe how much this girl could blab, but I didn't care, the CD was working, she was getting increasingly heated up.

By track eight, we were kissing rather intensely, and no, it's no coincidence that the song playing was a slow jam like "The First Cut Is The Deepest".
The deal was pretty much set with "Tonight's The Night", but when my date didn't hear the French whispers at the end, she cooled off a little bit. I almost panicked, but then "Sometimes When We Touch" closed the deal. It went back to the whole elevator scenario again(shrug); only this time it was a connection to an Aerosmith song.. Whatever the case, it didn't matter, she asked if I wanted to pass on our plans for the evening and just go back to her place for a drink.. Thank you, Rod..
Oh and no, you don't have to ask, we finished the CD once we arrived at her place- it all went well until the last two tracks: "Forever Young '96" started her talking about her need to start a family before she was too old; and I'm sure "All For Love", featuring Bryan Adams and Sting is self explanatory..

Anyway, after this release, I thought we almost lost Rod; he actually put out an album in '98(When We Were The New Boys) that featured rockers, where he was attempting to go back to his roots(yawn).. but it's always darkest before the dawn; he then did a motivational song for the "Patch Adam's" soundtrack- and then the flood.. "The Great American Songbook". With this exceptional, four volume set, we realized Rod hadn't lost anything; and I'm sure I don't have to explain my good fortunes on subsequent dates.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-09-17

5 out of 5 stars Scandal feat. Patty Smyth.......2007-05-12

What more can be said about Scandal? With Patty Smyth's sizzeling vocals and sultry delivery, she is the epitomy of the 80's female vocalist. Every song on every album is golden. I listen to her at least once every day. If only they were still together. 10 stars for any Scandal/Patty Smyth material, no questions asked.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Scandal, you'll like this........2007-01-10

How many Scandal greatest hits CDs can they put out when they only technically released one album? They released one EP and one album and this is the second greatest hits CD. I wished they would have just rereleased the EP as a CD (they did back in the 90's, but you can't find the CD any place). Buy this CD because it contains all the songs off the EP, then buy the Warrior album and you'll have all the Scandal songs.

5 out of 5 stars this cd is awesome!!!!!!!! i love scandal!!!!.......2007-01-03

i have previously purchased the cd scandalous which at the time was the only way to find most of the material from their EP. that cd contains 4out of 5 songs. so it was a good collection. Then i purchased Patty Smyth's greatest hits featuring scandal because i was trying to get the rest of the group's material. while it is also a great cd and contains alot of their material ,it still left you wanted more. Now we have it! This cd is awesome. not only do you get all 5 songs from the EP but 4 never released tracks. I have to agree with the other reviewer, why didn't columbia just release all 9 songs and make a full LP?,and yes it would have been wonderful if they would have just put the rest of the warrior material on this release and completed the scandal collection they are all great. this is a real treasure. I also own The Warrior Cd. NOw all i need to complete my collection of Scandal/Patty Smyth is to purchase her 1987 self-titled solo album, which currently at amazon runs at about $25. i guess that isn't bad considering what a rarity that album is. highly recommend this to anyone who is a scandal fan!!! even if you own other scandal or Patty smyth CDs you will not have these 4 unreleased tracks. it is a must have!!!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of a short lived & underrated band........2006-11-09

Scandal burst onto the scene in 1982 with a 5 song E.P. that quickly put them on the map. This was partly due to their low budget video for the smash single Goodbye to You that featured an amazingly sexy, strong and talented Patty Smyth dancing around & singing her little heart out. MTV played the living heck out of this video. The backing band was great as well. What was cool about Scandal was for the most part they were a guitar based band with a twin guitar attack that made their music not quite as overblown as a lot of similar stuff coming out at the time.

By the time they released their 1st full length album "The Warrior" in 1984, the band had already featured some lineup changes and in fact only Patty Smyth and one of the guitarists from the E.P. appeared on the album. The record label had seen an attempt to turn them into more of an arena rock type act. This is evidenced by the title track single written by Holly Knight & producer Mark Chapman (who had worked with Blondie and Tina Tuner on her Private Dancer album). Some fans of their debut E.P.'s were a little let down by the more bombastic nature (and some might say typical 80's) sound of the album though it did have some really good songs on it. Sure, the chorus of The Warrior is more than a bit silly, but when you've got a singer like Patty Smyth belting out those words, YOU BELIEVE HER!

The band would then splinter apart due to constant label interferance in the form of them wanting to constatnly push Patty Smyth to the forefront of the band much to the upset feelings of her backing band.

She would then go on to release some fairly successful solo albums before settling down in the 90's by marrying John McEnroe(!).

This new compilation is part of VH1's "We Are the 80's" package tour from this past summer that Scandal participated in. Other acts who are part of this collection are Rick Springfield, Eddie Money, Loverboy, Bow Wow Wow, Flock of Seagulls & The Bangles.

What sets the Scandal CD apart though is that this is more of an anthology of sorts rather than just a greatest hits package. This is due to them only having a 5 E.P. and The Warrior album to draw from.

You end up getting all 5 songs from the 1982 E.P., 3 unreleased tracks from those sessions, a B side from 1982 and the 5 songs from The Warrior.

All have been remastered in crystal clear sound.

Now, my one beef is that this CD comes just a hair shy of being 58 minutes long. Why not just put the rest of the Warrior on here and make it a true and complete package? Just think about it, on a single CD you could have had their entire recorded output!

But VH1/Sony saw fit to only include the 4 singles from The Warrior. But to be honest, their strongest stuff was from 1982 anyway. And the fact that you get 3 unreleased tracks from 1982 (which are really strong and I can't understand why they were put on their e.p. to make it a full album) in addition to the B side to Goodbye to You makes this quite a buy in terms of fans seeking rarities.

There was a compilation released in 1998 that featured songs from both Scandal and Patty Smythe's solo career.

But I would recommend this over that one if it's more Scandal you're after. This is much more than just a simple greatest hits package.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sacndal 80s CD is excellent.......2006-09-09

I very much enjoy this CD, especially with the previously unreleased tracks. I recommend this disc for any Scandal fan. It would have been nice to have released some covers they have done live in concert like "Second that emotion" and "Good Lovin".

An excellent introduction for one of the bands that set the standard for heavy metal. We Sold Our Soul for Rock & Roll features the original lineup of Black Sabbath, including Ozzy Osbourne on vocals; the songs are selected from the band's recordings up through 1975. The album features several classic songs, several of which are still on rock radio play lists: "Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man," and the ballad "Changes." There's also the humorous "Fairies Wear Boots," the vaguely psychedelic "Am I Going Insane," and the dark, macabre "Black Sabbath" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Most Sabbath fans will already have the albums from which the songs on this collection are taken. However, for the listener new to Sabbath, it's the perfect place to start. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars If you've only got room for one Sab album, make it this one!.......2007-06-16

This is all the Black Sabbath I own. Yeah, I've heard the classic Paranoid at a friend's house and liked it, but I decided to go with this instead because I wanted the basics outside of Paranoid. And man, did I get 'em! 14 classic Ozzy tracks, and 13 are great - my favorites are Iron Man - with one of the best introductions ever (thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... DOO DOO... I AM IRON MAN!) and that pentatonic riff we all know so well (six minutes of head-banging goodness), the thrasher Paranoid; slow-burning antiwar epic War Pigs (Even if it commits the cardinal sin of rhyming by rhyming "masses" with "masses"), the acoustic/electric, Led Zeppelin-like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; the infamous band title track, which may have a better intro than even Iron Man (the rainfall, the churchbells, the tritone - I'll never hear AC/DC's totally awesome Hells Bells the same way again), the bluesy Wizard, pot ode Sweet Leaf (with my favorite Sab riff ever), and the resident simple headbangers Tomorrow's Dream and NIB.
But what the hell is Changes? No more sensitive piano ballads for Sab, the DEFINITIVE heavy metal band out of the "Big Three" of early metal (the others being Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin). Zeppelin doesn't win the award, because Jimmy Page's guitar tone can't touch Tony Iommi's, and in truth, I find Deep Purple too boring to be definitive anything. And while I personally prefer Zeppelin, who overcomes their Achilles heel (Robert Plant, who sings like he swallowed something and can't write a decent set of lyrics when he isn't plagarizing Willie Dixon, AKA the best American composer EVER) with their pure instrumental skill, I very much dig Sab. They aren't your typical testosterone-laden metal band - their lyrics touch on Satanism, drug addiction, war, the occult, horror, sci-fi, all kinds of fun stuff. The lyrics sometimes read as stupid - there wasn't exactly a Bob Dylan in this group - but the way Ozzy delivers them, in that infamous monotone, is perfect. And as I said before, nobody can match Iommi's perfect tone.
One more thing I'd like to point out is the album's title. "We sold our SOUL for Rock 'n' Roll". Great concept, yeah, but note the funny little grammar violation - that implies that the group all shared a soul, and they agreed they'd sell it for rock and roll. I mean, Ozzy never struck me as that bright or anything, but come ON! Oh well, a minor quibble. So even though Changes sucks, this should be in any rocker's collection. Throw up those devil horns and ROCK OUT!

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-10

Lots of great material here. The only major issue is that you've probably heard many of these songs on classic rock radio a million times. They're still great songs, though. The album comes in at just over 74 minutes, so you're getting a whole lotta sabbath here. This is probably a great disc to buy for someone who enjoys Sabbath, but has never bought any of their CD's (e.g., maybe they only own stuff on tape or vinyl).

5 out of 5 stars We Sold Our Soul............2006-10-15

This is a compilation album that covers the original Ozzy years of the band up through the "Sabotage album. The original vinyl version was a 2 record set, that has been reduced to a single disc for CD. Two tracks were omitted on the CD version. This is a cool collection and includes some of the band's all time best stuff. About half of the "Paranoid" album is represented here along with "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" from their first one. Every song her is a classic including two of my all time favorite Sabbath tracks "Children Of The Grave" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". The ballad "Changes" is a bit of a change of pace for the band (it was recently re-recorded as a duet between Ozzy and Kelly Osborne). One of the things that I find interesting and is a bit of the sign of the times when these tracks were recorded in the early 70's, is that there are no less than 3 tracks on this collection that are basically love songs devoted to drugs. "Fairies Wear Boots" is about acid, "Sweet Leaf" Marijuana, and "Snowblind" cocaine. The album closes with another Sabbath classic "N.I.B." (Nativity In Black). In more recent years there have been Sabbath compilations released that cover significantly more ground than this one, so if you are just looking to get into the band I would probably recommend one of those, but for the time this one was released it was a very nice collection indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metal Legacy.......2006-07-17

This is where modern metal began. This "best of" CD captures the best of the Ozzy-era Sabbath and includes the band's biggest hits. A great "starter kit" for metal fans.

Top Tracks: "Paranoid", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath"

3 out of 5 stars Great CD...but.......2006-04-29

I used to own the double-album. Remember vinyl albums? Well the double album version had more songs than the CD so I'm giving it 3 stars even though all the songs deserve 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars CHRISTIAN ROCK.......2007-05-16

Fans of rock and heavy metal will not be disapointed with the driving beat and heavy guitar solos. Amazing clairity of notes compared to some songs where you are not sure where the guitarist is going.

The best part is the uplifting message you get without being sappy or uncool. Non-Christian rockers may not be use to the name of Jesus being used in a song (interesting how Satan may be mentioned and no one has a problem with that) These are written with God in mind and still kicks out incredible wrifs and sounds made famous during the "glam" age of rock.

This is definatly a "hair" band of the 80's with powerful presents that you can compare to "Poison, Cinderella, and the like". Lead singer hits high notes many will not try. If you like this - you must get the "Soldiers under Command" album which does all this and showcases more dirty guitar with monster layering I would compare to "Metallica"

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU LIKED TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL.....THIS IS PART 2 .......2005-11-29

This album is To Hell With The Devil Part 2. It starts off with a somewhat heavy song and one they have started their concerts with, the title track "In God We Trust." Then it goes right into the first single from the album "Always there for you". "Keep The Fire Buring" is next and has good vocal harmonies on it. It was also released as a single. And of course the ballad "I believe in you" (that really is a good song) is track 4. So far this is layered just like To Hell With The Devil. Opening track followed by three singles released from the band and also in the same order. A melodic song(Always there for you/Calling On You), to a Heavier song(Keep The Fire Burning/Free) and the ballads(I believe In You/Honestly). And of course you have "It's Up 2 You" that is like "Sing Along Song" and they are even both the first song on the second side of the albums!! I am not saying this is bad, not at all. If you like To Hell With The Devil then you are guaranteed to like this one.

Robert Sweet once said this album is about getting people to want to be Christians for the wonders of Heaven and not the fear of Hell. This album does seem "lighter" than To Hell With The Devil" and just because I said the albums sound the same does not mean these songs cannot hold their own. "Keep The Fire Burning" "The World Of You And I" "In God We Trust" "I Believe In You" and even "It's Up 2 You" with it's radio friendly sound is pretty good. The others on here are what you can expect from a Stryper album except maybe "The Reign" which is a very fast song and one some fans really like. I could never really get into it even after several listens.

This Album will not disappoint fans of To Hell With The Devil or any of the previous albums by Stryper. It is nothing new but it remains a favorite of many Stryper fans. "I Believe In You" could actually be the best ballad the band has made. While not as popular as "Honestly" this one is a very underated song from Stryper as it features some of Michaels best vocals on it. Would be great to hear this one live!! This album was also the last one that had straight forward Christian lyrics. The next album was the controversial "Against The Law" that was unfairly received by fans of the band. I have a review of that one if you want to check it out.

Stand Out songs: "In God We Trust" "I Believe In You" "The World Of You And I" and "Keep The Fire Burining"

5 out of 5 stars Sadly Criticized .......2005-10-15

I have been a Stryper Fan since their debut in the early 80's, from their first album "The Yellow and Black Attack" to their latest "Reborn". And I have to say that "In God We Trust" was truly the peak of the band's career. The album is nearly flawless in every aspect. Michael Sweet's incredible vocals shine throughout every song and lyric. The album's hit "Always There For You" was a huge hit on MTV and in my opinion was one of their most inspirational songs to date. If you know Stryper, you will know some of their incredible ballads such as Honestly, All of Me, My Love I will Always Show" and on this album "I Believe In You", which are all unique. Unfortunately, this CD has received some harsh criticism from other viewers. It seems to me that whenever an artist or group ventures into uncharted territory, fans get fickle and overly critical and narrow minded. But I think if you listen with an open mind, you will appreciate the direction and quality of this album, which is unlike any of their other work.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for Stryper!.......2005-09-05

Stryper did proove itself again with "In God we trust". Excellent tracks of 10 hard rock tunes. Your neck might be sore after you listen to it a couple times in a row. Head bangers get use to it though! There is no profanity in the music which is great for kids that are into the hard rock scene, I saw them back in the late 1980's in a church setting! Although they also played arenas as well!

5 out of 5 stars Single-handedly the greatest album ever made. That's it........2005-03-23

If you haven't heard of the worldwide phenomenon known as STRYPER (an acrostic for SALVATION THROUGH REDEMPTION YIELDING PEACE, ENCOURAGEMENT, and RIGHTEOUSNESS), you must have been hiding in a bomb shelter somewhere during the last two decades. Stryper is, without a doubt, the greatest musical group in the history of mankind. To say anything else would be idiotic and superficial. Composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, and bands like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and The Who --they don't even come close to the musical genius, originality, and burning fervor of STRYPER. They're merely unoriginal, untalented, imitators of these four gloriously attractive, spandex covered men. "In God We Trust" really shows their true musical genius and their penchant for wearing bumblebee-style spandex.

If you are still reading this review and actually believe me, I not only pity you, I hope that you are hit by a speeding car within 24 hours. (Kidding of course) I know it isn't fair to make fun of an artist because of what they wear, but in this case, IT'S JUST TOO EASY. Go to their website www.stryper.com and look at them. I need not comment more. On top of that, their music....sucks. EXCESS sums them up perfectly. Too much hair, too many cheesy guitar solos, too much pre-pubescent vocal stylings, too many "strypes", too many

SERIOUSLY, NOW. My real criticism of Stryper and most of Christian Contemporary Music (CCM) today is that fact that it markets Christianity like it would market a clothing style or a new product. Christianity is not up for sale, nor should it ever be, regardless if you believe in it or not. It cheapens its value and makes it *less* genuine to the world.

That said, I have to admit that Michael Sweet and the boys of Stryper often make me laugh because they actually think they are legitimately cool.

Happy music hunting. Please, whatever you do, do not take this album, even if you are paid to do it.

Like Fatboy Slim, Asian Dub Foundation, and even Definition of Sound (who show up on "Here We Go," We Rock Hard's anthem), the Freestylers are creatures of the club scene. Their live show is DJ-oriented but involves dancers and rappers; on their debut album, the Freestylers endeavor to layer their music with history (the opening track samples not one but three Public Enemy tracks), big beats, and funky melodies--if they can help it, you're not going to stop dancing for a second. Working with guest MCs keeps the tracks fresh, but if you're not an aficionado of the scene the Freestylers come out of, you might not notice; there's diversity here, but it's subtle. Ultimately, the album falls into a ghetto: it's not quite obvious enough for the casual fan, but it's nowhere near out-there enough for serious crate diggers; fortunately, there are plenty of people who enjoy the middle ground. If you're one, then We Rock Hard is for you. --Randy Silver

4 out of 5 stars Nothing complex...just fun.......2005-02-21

Amazon's tracklisting seems wrong here. There is nothing complex or deep about this album....but I listen to frequently....it's totally rowdy and fun. My favorites are Ruffneck and Hold Up Your Hands.

5 out of 5 stars A bit short of a masterpiece, but.............2003-09-11

When "Don't Stop" was released as a single it really stood out as something different on dance-type radio. Not downloading any of the tracks, I took a chance and dropped the $ to see if the rest of the album (by an unknown band to me) could hold up as well. I wasn't disappointed. The album is not a cover to cover masterpiece, but it is a great piece of work. It falls short on a couple of filler tracks, but definatley worth the investment.

4 out of 5 stars A change of pace, that will change your attitude........2003-01-10

I can't think of a higher complinent to pin to this album than this: from start to finish it's one hell of a ride!

Most artists find a formula that works and either stick with it and become repetitive, or they experiment and lose the magic. Some how the Freestylers can give you an entire album that consists of variations on a theme. Songs seem to span multiple styles within the same genre. Each track is both entertaining and distinctly individual, yet they keep to the original thread. All things considered...it's fun, and it's funky. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong........2003-01-06

Do not miss this CD, I am a big fan of all types of music, and across all generes this is one of my top 5 most played cd's in the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole CD was GREAT!.......2002-01-26

It's rare that you find a CD where you like every song on it. This CD was one of those CD's. The first time I heard one of the songs was when I was in California about two years ago. I'm pretty sure it was "Here We Go". I couldn't find the CD anywhere so I just gave up on it until I watched "Dude, Where's My Car" a few months ago and I heard the song. So I bought the soundtrack and was disappointed not to find it (still a good CD though). Being lazy I just looked up the Freestylers on Kazaa and burned two awesome songs from the Freestylers and I was like like whatever, these songs are so awesome I have to buy the CD. I finally found it and now I love it. Even my least favorite song on the CD I've grown to like. They definitely deserve five stars.

P.S. I'm listening to the CD right now, keep making these phat songs and I'll keep buyin' them.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound!!.......2007-05-29

Wow! Another great CD that sounds far better than the original from Audio Fidelity. Steve Hoffman did another great job. If you are a fan of Deep Purple MkII, this is the way they should sound.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You, Audio Fidelity!.......2005-11-12

This is my favorite Deep Purple album, and while the bonus tracks on the Warner Bros. remaster are nice, they screwed-up the sound, so this is an answer to my prayers. There aren't any bonus tracks, but the original album sounds better than it's ever sounded on CD. I'm going to have to give Audio Fidelity's Montrose and Faces discs a try. I'd love to have a primo version of A Nod's as Good as a Wink!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUND TOO!.......2005-11-02

Deep Purple's 1973 "Who Do We Think We Are" is a fantastic album. It's been shuffled into the background behind some of those other Purple classics "Machine Head," "Fireball" and "In Rock". The great production, the hard driving polished playing and the killer songs make for one really enjoyable album. The Audio Fidelity remastering is easy on the ears, and it also includes the lyrics. The EMI re-mastering was good, but this is great!!! So now, we Deep Purple fans will have to have two copies of "Who Do We Think We Are" in our CD collection.

I've read all the reviews on this album and it seems that the big favorites are "Woman From Tokyo", "Smooth Dancer" and "Rat Bat Blue". While "Mary Long", "Our Lady" "Super Trooper" and "Place In Line" get there share of votes too. All this positive feedback proves something I've known all along, this is one great album. Now sounding better than ever.

Thanks Mr. Hoffman. Bring on the U.S. version of "Fireball" next.
Long Live DP!
