5 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories from the early seventies..........2007-05-13

In my opinion, this is still one of John Mayall's best albums ever. He is called the master of British Blues and proves it on this live gig. The alto sax solos in several of the songs are wonderful. Get it and listen to it, is all I can say!

5 out of 5 stars Another one left behind...........2007-03-14

Over the years i have left some great and classic LPS at 'close friends' homes. My friend Gloria was the earth mother for our 'band of gypsys'. Her apartment was the place to party and crash, and above all listen to those forbidden albums you could never hear at home. This and Aqualung, plus all the Moody Blues, released at that time, were played alot. Gloria was a Janis Joplin Fanatic. There was some great times and smoke had by all when the stereo was cranked up. From start to finish this was a great album, and from this we moved on to Mark-Almond's first LP. John Mayall talking about
chiky-chiky what had us laughing and the mouth percussion put us over the
top. But as much as i loved this Album back then, hearing it alone is not the same. Invite some friends over each of you play what you like and include this one, too. Fans of the newest tween-age hotty will not be impressed-the more fool them. Fans of the Blues, and those who did not know they were, caught on to John Mayall and never left him behind. Catch
him here and all that he has done. This would be a good start. I left this behind and it was my loss and her gain. The CD is in the mail for me as we speak.

5 out of 5 stars I Saw Mayall Live at the Fillmore.......2006-08-26

But it was the show at the Fillmore West, and "Room To Move" knocked everyone off their feet. Well, they were already sitting on the floor (no chairs, then!). They say that if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there, but I think this show was SO memorable, it made it through the filter of time. You didn't have to be there. You can just buy this, and .... imagine.

5 out of 5 stars John Mayall's The Turning Point.......2006-08-12

This is one of Mayall's first and best CDs or records a we used to say. I never tire of listening to Mayall's harmonica and voice. His music has lasted through time. He's as popular as ever.

2 out of 5 stars Yes, it is THAT bad.......2007-06-08

Why, why is it so difficult to reissue the originals, in full? The music is wonderful--well, if you're a fan, you know that already--but the sound effects really are laughably bad. And as the sound effects were integral to the atmosphere of several tracks, it really does matter. Now, instead of the jungle sounds that accompanied the original track, you get to listen to some house sparrows chirping and flitting cheerfully from tree to tree, as if you were sailing toy boats in the park instead of slogging through the jungles of New Guinea. If the original sound effects are missing, minimal effort from RCA could have secured at least reasonably realistic substitutes. Instead, we get this pathetic garbage. Really a shame. That second star is only because the original music is so good.

2 out of 5 stars More victory at sea.......2007-03-26

It's ok, but much of it was cut from the original album. I have the complete set of 33 1/3 albums, there were three, the cd is ok but lacks the original sounds put on when recorded.Sounds were added that were not originally there. It can't compare to the original.

5 out of 5 stars Victory At Sea.......2007-03-09

This time honored musical composition is without a doubt the best in its depiction of war in the Pacific. The music tells the real story!!

5 out of 5 stars More Victory at Sea.......2007-01-04

The quality of the digitally remastered music on this CD is far and above what I was expecting. The entire CD plays flawlessly without so much as a hint of unwanted background noise. My experience in purchasing this CD was very good. Shipment was almost immediate and delivery prompt. I can find absolutely nothing to complain about and am very happy with my purchase. Thanks a million.

2 out of 5 stars Victory at Sea Volumes 1 and 2.......2006-12-14

What an utter disappointment. I've got the originals on vinyl, and this sad excuse for a reissue was not worth the money I spent. Most of the sound effects from the original have been left out, and the final 10-minute-plus piece, "Symphonic Scenario", bears not even a passing resemblance to the original. Don't waste your time and money.

    Album Description

Turning Point' is teenage R&B sensation Mario's second album, and the follow up to his 2002 eponymously-titled release. Featuring slick production and smooth vocal stylings, the album sticks very rigidly to the contemporary R&B formula that has proved so successful for his peers. Includes the single 'Let Me Love You'.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Turning point is MOST DEF on point.......2006-10-30

Mario's last album was nice and catchy but very young at best. On Turning Point Mario takes the more grown up approach with not only his songs but his image. When "Let me love you" hit I couldn't believe how much range he had in his voice. When the album came I quickly got it. It's very unfortunate that Usher had the year he had because Mario is gonna be put in the "Trying to be like usher" list. This album has many high points such as "Let me love you" "Couldn't say no" "Call The Cops" "Nikes fresh out the box" and the rock filled "Here we go again". Mario is only 18 as he states and if he keeps improving his music like he did with this album there really won't be any more "like usher" talk.

3 out of 5 stars Exactly where is Mario turning?.......2006-07-09

Mario has a lot to prove on his sophomore effort - transitioning from musical teeny-bopper-ish prodigy to sex-symbolic R&B/Soul entertainer; setting himself apart from the rest of today's male R&B singers (especially Usher); living up to the hype & the success of his smash hit single "Let Me Love You". Mario's only 18, yet he's got to accomplish all of the aforementioned tasks. While Mario's ambitiousness is written all over this album, "Turning Point" doesn't entirely succeed with flying colours.

Ironically, Mario is unquestionably at his best when he sticks to the script. The silky-smooth lead single "Let Me Love You" is definitely the best track on the entire album. With sweet, creative lyrics (courtesy of Ne-Yo & others), a smooth, laid-back beat & Mario's soulful vocals, this song oozes sex appeal without the sleaze, and is perfect for any occasion involving love. "Like Me Real Hard" is also another beautiful, soulful ballad where Mario empathizes for a female who is afraid of re-experiencing heartbreak, whilst riding over the guitar work that plays gently in the background. Other high-quality ballads like the sensuous "Directions", the musically raw "Nikes Fresh Out The Box" (warning - the "women-are-like-shoes" metaphor might turn some ladies off) & the soulful second single "How Could You" (which has him question how his ex-lover could be so unfaithful & deceitful to him) also keep the running smoothly.

Unfortunately, Mario's urge to turn up the "raunchy factor" ruins many tracks on this album. Take "Call The Cops" & "Shakedown" for example. While the beats on both tracks are great, the lyrics on both songs suck really bad ("Cause I got a little horny/ Lil' mama put it on me" & God knows how many clichés on both songs, respectively). As a matter of fact, Mario's attempt at glorifying himself in egotism & materialism on the latter track falls flat on its face (assuming that it has one!). Check this verse out, and you might see what I mean:

    Verse 1:
    Yeah I caught you peeping
    Corner of my eye
    Me I'm never sleepin'
    Guess you think I'm fly
I'm tryna take ya girl home tonight, ya see
    Tonight, V.I.P. belongs to me
Entourage, fresh whips and you already know
Got the tweedies chirpin', just turned out my show
All you gotta do is shake that thing for me
Ladies, if ya feel me just come holla at me

The only time Mario's...ahem..."gangsta"-esque persona works are on the tracks "Couldn't Say No" & "Boom". The former track tells the story of a man confessing to his ex-girlfriend about cheating on her "in between that week we split up", and Mario pulls off this track surprisingly well with the support of an introductory piano, some dark violins & a hot beat. The latter, on the other hand, is a straight up club banger with an absolutely hot beat, with Juvenile dropping a nice verse. Not only that, but Mario seems to be genuinely having fun with this track, whereas "Call The Cops" & "Shakedown" felt forced.

With two great tracks that manage to break away from his more successful ballads, you'd expect this album to turn out great...guess what? WE HAVE ANOTHER PROBLEM! Both tracks seems to be awfully reminiscent of Usher's "Confessions (Part II)" & "Yeah", respectively. While "Boom" may be more anthemic than Usher's "Yeah", it simply has nowhere near as much energy, and lets face it... both Ludacris & Lil' Jon are a lot more energetic & generally more interesting than Juvenile. Whether his emulation of Usher on "Couldn't Say No" & "Boom" were intentional or not, the fact is that Usher's overpowering influence is present on both, which is rather disappointing.

That didn't seem to worry Mario though when he co-wrote album opener "18", an autobiographical track where Mario's telling niggas not to compare him to others. Strangely, Cassidy's less-than-average verse blows all of Mario's lines out of the water. Not only that, but Mario's unconvincing attempt at sounding "thuggish" on this track takes away from the song's already-weak feel.

Now all the tracks we have left to check up on are the R&B/Reggae ballad "Girl I Need", the hard-edged R&B/Rock track "Here I Go Again" & the "Let Me Love You" remix. The former track is a breezy summer tune where Mario describes the credentials his dream girl needs. Cham also drops by to drop a nice verse on the track. The only letdown to this song is the horrid chorus (honestly, how many times do we have to hear the ride-or-die cliché on a non-gangsta artist?).

At least it's not as bad as the third single "Here I Go Again", a lyrically clichéd R&B/Rock power ballad where Mario talks about repetitively returning to a bad relationship. I love the lyrics in the chorus, but there's not much else to it. As if Mario's hollow-hearted vocals are bad enough, you have screeching guitar riffs counteracting his usually smooth voice to make things even worse. Thankfully, "Turning Point" ends on a great note with the "Let Me Love You" remix. With a harder, more street-edged beat, along with a few nice verses from King of The South (T.I.) & King of The Lox (Jadakiss), this track is clearly a highlight, and definitely reaches the quality standard set by its original counterpart.

Altogether, "Turning Point" isn't too bad, but there are too many flaws to make this album truly great. To make things worse, Mario seems "artistically troubled". Whenever Mario tries breaking away from his true strength (ballads) by experimenting with other genres & ideas, he tends to fail miserably (excluding "Girl I Need"). However, by sticking to balladry, he leaves himself in a limited space for creativity, which is something most genres desperately need. Mario clearly has potential, but it must be safe to say that I expected better from someone so talented. THREE STARS!!

3 out of 5 stars what turning point?...Nikes fresh out the box.......2006-06-28

I copied (thank God) the contents of this album from my sister. "Turning Point" is completely thoughtless; most of the songs are so cliche' filled with corny hip-hop lyrics that could not even charm a cat. The three stars are for 3 good songs: "let me love you"(the hit single), "Girl I Need" (a fairly nice reggae/hip-hop tune), and THE best song on this entire wretched album which has hit single potential, "Nike's Fresh out the box." His smooth vocals work well with the R&B rythmn of this track.
I absolutely hate it! when artists have a "hit single" with the purpose of manipulating individuals into purchasing their record, when the record itself sucks! skip this if you can or simply download "Nikes' Fresh out the box."

    3 out of 5 stars What a Turning Point.......2006-05-07

    Gee,
What can i say? I really like Mario and I loved his FIRST cd but I can't say the same for this one. Maybe it was the production. Maybe I need to listen to it again
I Liked a total of 2 songs from that cd and thats not enough for me.
I will give Mario credit, I was able to see him sing live and to be a newbee, he did a very good job. I was able to keep me very entertained with is voice and almost good moves.
I think he is trying to transition his self for a boy to a man, so i will give him the benefit of the doubt for that.

3 out of 5 stars it was alright.......2006-04-04

For this to be his second album it wasn't that bad. The CD starts off with him singing about he just turned 18 featuring Cassidy. At first I thought the song sounded weird but it grew on me and I kind of started to like it. Other songs I thought were good on the album were "How Could You", "Here I Go Again"-I just love the beat, "Like Me Real Hard"-the best song on the album, love it, and "Let Me Love You Remix"-this one is way better than the original. There were other songs on the album that were okay but those were my favorite. There is this song called "Nikes Fresh Out the Box". At first I liked this song a lot because of the beat and it kind of had that 1970s feel to it. But when I closely listened to the lyrics he is actually comparing a pair of sneaks to a girl. What a complete turn off and its rather corny. Definately could have done without that track. But overall this CD wasn't that bad. I really don't recommend it to add to your R&B section because it wasn't all that. It was just average.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-04-19

I came across this title at a used record store, and I love it. The CD is creative, smartly crafted, and beautiful. The assembly of musicians playing here pretty much leaves nothing else to be desired - they really ignite your soul from the beginning and keep the fire burning to the end. 8 out of 9 songs are Kevin's own compositions, and it's pure jazz right up there with the best of them.

Kevin's guitar workouts are brilliant: smooth, quick, and beautiful, with varying styles and sound textures. He uses both electrical and acoustic guitars, and I thought they were well-chosen for the styles of the songs he's written. Some of his acoustic tones sound like a Spanish guitar.

The rhythm section is excellent throughout. On the hard-driving jazz tracks, they really set it on fire. I was quite impressed, even having heard some of the biggest names in jazz. These pieces have character and spunk. This is my first record of Kevin's, and I think I'll be looking for more.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Recording.......2006-10-16

I could tell from the first cut that this was a great jazz record. The music on this disk packs a real edge with some excellent drum and bass work. His guitar sound on this record is very unique and the accoustic sound works as a great front to the hard charging bass and drums. He has two driummers and two bass players Marvin Smitty Smith on drums and Dave Holland along with Charnet Moffet on bass. The other drummer is very good but I am unfamiliar with his work. Kevin got to a very cutting edge place on this recording and plays some solos with amazing speed. Anyone who likes the sound of Pat Metheny or John Scofield will be amazed at how good of a guitar player Kevin is.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2000-03-20

The folks at The Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center with their Artistic Director, Clarinetist David Shifrin, have produced a splendid recording of music written expressly for them. All performances are top-notch. The CD opens with John Corigliano's hauntingly beautiful dialog between violin and clarinet entitled "Soliloquy." Following is what is probably the finest work on the program, the clarinet quintet of Ellen Taffe Zwilich. It's a substantial and well-proprtioned work that really has something to say. It is chamber music in the true sense; everyone involved shares in the musical exchange. Joan Tower's quintet follows, and is of high quality, as one would expect from a composer of her calibre. It is fine music, but does suffer at times of being a bit clarinet-centric. The other two composers represented on this release, Bright Sheng, and Bruce Adolph, have completely fallen into the trap of treating the wind instrument as a soloist, and therefore cannot be considered to be quality chamber music pieces. Their music is enjoyable, however, and one hopes that next time they will consider composing chamber music instead of chamber concerti.

5 out of 5 stars Musicianship At Its Best!!.......2006-12-04

What can I say? This group (in my humble opinion) is a diamond in the rough, with a very bright future. Their musicianship, and their collective compositional talent, are exemplary! My recommendation: Treat yourself and others to the music of this outstanding band!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one!.......2006-03-11

I heard a cut from this CD on satellite radio. WOW! So I bought this and found their previous two CD's and bought those, too. What a welcome change from the normal rehashed "processed cheese" that passes, lately, for C-Jazz. Inventive, upbeat, great mixture of different (well played) instruments and (here's the best part) each cut rides on a different mood and sound. Even the few slower tracks are tastefully done and fresh. Tired of a whole CD's worth of mind-numbing, synthesized repetition? Check this one out! (And, BONUS, you get a cool sampler CD as well.) Keep 'em coming, guys!

    5 out of 5 stars Invigorating!.......2006-01-26

Turning Point is a talented quintet of smooth jazz artists who hail from Phoenix, Arizona. Music from their previous CD has been highlighted on our radio station play list for the last 6 months, via the Live365.com Music Library. To describe their style, they've patterned their music based on the group, Spyro Gyra. However, their style of music is original and satisfying. Their latest CD, "Matador" mixes it up with Latin, Flamenco & Native American rhythms. The group sounds uniquely invigorating. The track, "Quisiera Ser" is the highlight of this release. It's an invigorating track that will remind you of the southwest. It's a great piece of work that will become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Shopping with one click.......2005-11-17

Matador is a great record. I'm sending this CD to all my friends for Christmas... I love this band because although they are incredibly talented, they don't take themselves so seriously, and the resulting music is spontaneous, passionate, and fun. If you ever get the chance to see John Herrera play live -- don't miss it.

    5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-09-16

From fusion-funk to flamenco, Arizona-based Turning Point has created its most dynamic album yet, and covers all the hues of contemporary jazz within the scope of MATADOR's eleven tracks, nine of which are originals. In the same way that Hiroshima has successfully melded their Asian heritage and contemporary jazz, so, too, has this outstanding band deftly combined elements of brothers Demitri (bass) and Thano (guitar) Sahnas' Greek heritage and the band's Southwest Latin jazz heritage with progressive jazz, rock, R&B, and blues. The result: an energetic, compelling collection of amazing performances. The rest of this popular band: Steve Culp on keys and John Herrera on drums/percussion, plus, featured sax man Domenic Amato. The first radio hit from MATADOR is a flamenco-funk cover of the Latin Grammy-winning "Quisiera Ser" from South American superstar Alejandro Sanz's songbook.  In addition, you need to check out the killer "salsa meets hummus" treatment of the classic, "Spain," which features Charlie Bisharat on violin. My favorites also include the festive "Despues de Manana" and the way hip retro-soul "Suburban Safari." Good stuff indeed, and if it sounds like this band has fun making their music, it's definitely by design. To quote John Herrera, "The reason we're successful is that we are committed to having fun, no matter what." MATADOR is not only fun, but also a quality project from a quality band. One listen and you'll be able to see why Turning Point is the hottest thing going in Arizona outside of the sun! ~Scott O'Brien

    5 out of 5 stars I was there too.......2006-02-08

Unlike the other reviewer who was there, the show I attended
(Saturday late) was absolutely sold out.The innovative sound mix- minus drums and, for the most part,
heavy electric guitars- became very natural after a very short while. The highlight of the CD, and of the show, was the magnificent sax work of Johnny Almond- especially on the odd timed (6/4) "California" and "...Roxanne". His flute playing is a little above average (see Ian Anderson of Tull for way above average) but the sax work is very strong and melodic as are Steve Thompson on Bass and Jon Mark on finger guitar.
A great listen, even 36 years later.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic From The Godfather Of British Blues.......2003-11-13

How luck one of the other reviewrers was to have seen this concert. This is a absolute masterpiece of live blues. John mayall and all the band at there best and all sound like they are enjoying themselves. And the whole concert with no drums makes me want to listen to other cd's to see if they were really needed. The harmonica work is magically and makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. They is nothing else really to say apart this CD should be every blues fans collection. I have this on vinyl as well and recomend to vinyl fans to try and get a copy. Not sure if i should mention it but bluestorm is the place to go. So buy this CD TELL EVERY ONE TO GO OUT AND CRANK UP THE VOLUME

5 out of 5 stars I was there when this LP was recorded at the Fillmore East.......2001-07-19

My buddy Mike Cinelli and I were big Brittish Blues fans back in the late 60's. We had seen most if not all of the greats...Fleetwood Mac (the original with Peter Green) et al. We got the tickets for Mayall's concert not knowing that he had switched gears and had revamped the Bluesbreakers. The night of the concert arrived (July 12, 1969...the late show I believe...I usually went to the late shows at the Fillmore). The curtain goes up and the announcer fumbled the intro but John made it right...and there before us on a naked stage (no Joshua light show...no diversion of any kind) stood this quartet. What most fans of the lp don't realize is that this night was also the debut of John's old pal, Eric Clapton's new band...Blind Faith...up at Madison Square... John invited the half-capacity crowd to come on closer and make the event more intimate as it was going to be recorded....(surprise to us...a good surprise...because now I have a 'living testament' to the night's events. The music was astounding, breathtaking and immediate. It remains a turning point for me both as a fan and as a musician. John blew our minds with his superlative understated sound. The recording quality (after all it was the Fillmore East...the same place the Allman Brothers and many other bands would choose to record...for it has excellent acoustics.) You not only heard the blues going through its evolution but you felt it...it drew you in...and it didn't/doesn't matter who you are or where you came from. It is powerful music. One I rank as part of my 5 all-time favorite lps...or CD's to many of you. Nylon string guitar, flute/sax, elec. bass and harp/vocals/slide guitar...all in a rich and textural format...no excessiveness at all.....this was one of those times when less proved to be more...so much more... I will never forget the event...the music...the message... This is truly one of the great albums of the 60's...the blues...and of music...period. Vince DeLucia 7/17/01...

4 out of 5 stars A must for Mayall Fans.......2001-01-15

This album show the versatility of John Mayall. Without a drummer, the band still produces a driving sound based on the soaring sounds of sax and flutist Johnny Almond. While not normally a fan of horn based blues, I still play this album after 30 years.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Almond Johnny Almond Johnny Almond.......2000-05-13

Innovative-yes, important-yes but also a one off recording I don't think these heights were ever reached again by any of these musicians. So get it because Jonnhy Almond's sometimes blistering sometimes sultry sax and Steve Thompsosn's unassuming bass playing are essential audio gems

I have been listening to the "cemetary shoes" album. Okay now be warned before you rush into Johnny he is considered to be in the Genre of "PSYCHOBILLY" so if you do not have at least a passsing appreciation of Rockabilly, punk, goth, and alt country. So don't blame me if he scares the hell out of you or you just don't get it, but if you can get past any prejudices or dislikes you initially have of the music and really listen to the man, he has something to say and a very unique way of saying it. you can hear a few samples of Johnny on his website at www.johnnydowd.com Here are the lyrics to one of his songs that I really like the words to,

    Billy Blu

A crooked little man / lives in the underground
Sometimes he goes up / but mostly he stays down

People call him Billy / William is his name
In the coming darkness / he's the keeper of the flame

He repairs radios / with alien transistors
Cosmic commnication / between brothers and sisters

He has information / unavailable to most
He converses with angels / and sleeps with ghosts

Silence is a sadness / a bird with a song
Billy is a sailor / between right and wrong

A world of light and promise / is beyond his memory
In the present he is occupied / preparing for eternity

Lucifer is coming / don't let the children hear
The devil's in the wood pile / judgment day is near

Things that seem simple / are extremely complicated
When you scratch the surface / of things gold-plated

    © Johnny Dowd

I hope the more adventurous of you take a listen and give him half a chance and those less adventurous look at all the pictures of his pretty face (well at least that was the one good thing one young lady could find about him). On another interesting note about Johnny he didn't record his first album until he was 50 years old. Well guess I can't complain I didn't put out my first book until I was 34, and I had twenty odd years of material back logged. Which we can really blame on Bob because I really didn't think much of the "bits" I wrote until I heard SBR and I thought man I want to make statements like that. I look at Johnny's lyrics and it so often reminds me of the ways that I string words together. So take a listen, check out what he says, and always keep an open mind, remember don't judge a book by it's cover (or a book of poetry by it's title).

    2 out of 5 stars Meh........2004-11-12

Man oh man...you know I love JD, but this album is sort of making me question me faith. I question whether two stars is really fair, but I gave three to The Pawnbroker's Wife, and this is definitely inferior to that one, so that's what it's getting. The most obvious disappointment here--and I think most fans would agree with me on this--is the absence of the immaculate Kim Sherwood-Caso's vocal talents. This was always a big part of the appeal of any Dowd album; she made good songs into stunning songs, and I suspect that, even if the ones here aren't as good as usual, she could have partially redeemed some of them. I certainly hope the two of them haven't had some sort of falling out, and that we'll hear more of her in future Dowd recordings.

Here's what's good about this album: the frenzied 'Garden of Delights.' I would say that this is the one song here that approaches classic status; an unnervingly intense tale of murder/suicide. Also pretty good: 'Wedding Dress,' with its entertaining southern gothic lyric (maybe Dowd should write books). That and 'Brother Jim' have a gospel feel to them (even if one's about a crossdressing butcher and the other a clerical murderer). 'Whisper in the Nag's Ear' might be okay on its own, but it just seems pointlessly overdone compared to the spare original version on Pictures From Life's Other Side.

But...most of the songs are just kind of there. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not exactly exciting either. I expect a lot more from the guy who wrote 'Worried Mind' and 'Hell or High Water.' Better luck next time.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, smart, interesting music.......2004-11-09

Johnny Dowd makes me appreciate having ears to hear with and a mind to think with. Here is a man who, in a just world, would enjoy the success that more commercial musicians do today; that he does not is a real crime (then again, the world's loss is his fans' gain). His music is deep, dark and thoughtful, but well crafted, like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The tunes take some getting used to, as does his voice, because they cover material not usually associated with today's homogenized and emasculated pop and radio scene. But like most acquired tastes, you wonder how you ever got along without it. He writes music like the moon casts shadows, makes you look over your shoulder, and consider your fate. His albums, including his recent, Cemetary Shoes, deal with topics from the seamy side of life, a portion of the world that is anathema to the Britneys, the Jessicas, and the other pop tarts of music. If you appreciate artistry, thought and challenge, check out the Dowd catalog. Stretch your imagination a little. Take a chance on his music and experience an enveloping warmth that is cognition and emotion melding.

    5 out of 5 stars Mandalay accident.......2002-09-03

My wife and I attended a Gypsy Kings Concert at Mandalay bay in Las Vegas. Great concert, but a bit short, so we headed inside the casino to have a couple of drinks. We had a tuff time finding seats at the first "lounge" so we headed for another and although it was crowded we were able to snag a table right in front of the small stage. The stage was quite crowded with an elaborate drum set-behind plexi, four guitars- perched on stands, a relatively small keyboard set-up and a six string bass guitar. We settled in and waited for our drinks and the musicians to show up. The drinks were average but the music was incredible. Four Technical masters effortlessly spun a web of riffs and chops that held a lounge full of jaded Vegas hedonists' hostage for their entire set. This included a few of the Gypsy King band members, who I spotted poking there heads in to see where the audio magic was coming from. No flashy light shows, smoke and mirrors or theatrics just a seamless roller coaster ride of notes, rhythm, and musical prowess that dropped my jaw. We heard the name of the band despite the applause and cheers "Turning Point". Well, needless to say I was impressed and had to have more, I think you will too if you appreciate fine musicianship that combines sophistication with the primal rhythms of numerous musical styles. I recommend you buy the CD and try to see these guys if they get to your neck of the woods. I realize now that we were lucky not to find a place to sit in that first lounge, But that's Vegas and "Luck".

Heard about this group while watching the morning news, for things to do in the city. Went to see and met with the group the same night, at an afterwork set. We were knocked off our feet by their smooth jazz style, mixed with a latin twist. My wife and I became instant converts, and would highly recommend any smooth jazz follower to add Turning Point to your must get list. I give them a five star rating, and have added them to my collection you should to.
