Album Description

If you can imagine Portishead, with more accsessible vocals, rich harmonies, classical style piano playing, gorgeous string sections and the most amazing beats ever programmed, then you have Daughter Darling. This project is the culmination of 6 years of beat production, the most talented piano, guitar and string players, a world class DJ battle champion and a girl who knew she was going to be a singer since 3 years old. Every song has been carefully crafted into a masterpiece.

Natalie's unique voice provides a strong basis for music that is dark and moody. The title track "Sweet Shadows" deals with her emotions of moving to a big city, feeling alone with only the shadows to guide her as she walks around seeing many "soul-less" people. Voodoo games, is about an ex-boyfriend who can't let go, and uses a voodoo doll to try and continue to keep his violent hold on her from afar.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah McLachlan Meets Portishead.......2007-02-27

Sara McLachlan-esque breathy, ethereal, yet powerful vocals get a trip-hop spin from Daughter Darling, and it's a case of two great tastes that taste great together. DJ Infiniti's non-intrusive scratching raises the group's moody, folkish, Celtic-tinged singing and tunes from the list of Lachlan-wannabes and helps the group stake out territory of its own. However, the album is not so trip-hoppy that I think it would only appeal to fans of that unjustly overlooked subgenre; the voice and piano work are strong enough to carry the album even without the edge Infiniti provides. The album is consistent in quality all the way through, with numerous highlights, and is enjoyable enough to sustain repeated listens. But beware of listening too carefully: the quality of the music exceeds the quality of the lyrics, and you'll start to notice if you concentrate too hard. The best way to listen to this album is to lie back let it wash over you without reflecting on it too much. Let Daughter Darling hypnotize you. You'll get lost in this album and love it.

The first track on Sweet Shadows, Broken Bridge, was also used in the first episode of Bones, Season One - that's how I heard of it, though it took some internet research to track down Daughter Darling - glad I did!

5 out of 5 stars notice how the people that give this bad reviews sound really pretentious & dumb..........2006-07-15

so dont trust them...all of these songs have a different make up (within the genre of course...there's not as much range as one song being gabber waltz & the other a sadcore country garage techno experiment...who would really wont that?)...the first six are great then the rest are all good as well but it's hard to stomach such a well-crafted cd all at once...might have to take a break, listen to something less interesting for a min. (i.e. lamb, nightmares on wax, k&d whatever whatever)
bottom line people!!!!
...this is the best american trip-hop outfit out right now!

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Shadows Indeed!.......2006-05-10

Daughter Darling has missed the trip hop boat by about a decade. Still, the album doesn't seem dated, and being a fan of trip hop, I'm glad to see a group still out there producing original stuff in the genre. Sweet Shadows may actually be one of the better trip hop albums, as in it is more balanced. It's less depressing than Tricky, but less poppy than Olive. It's got a nice combination of dark melodies that are somewhat catchy, while not being over the top in either direction.

The whole album is quite good and coherent. It sets the tone with the opening chords and doesn't waiver too far from that place of calm, subdued and perhaps a bit sad. This type of music always somewhat borders on the sentimental, melodramatic, self-pitying pit fall, but they manage to skilfully hover the rim without falling in. Honestly I was a bit scared when I saw there was a cover of Dust in the Wind on the album, but somehow they pull it off and make you almost forget it was a Kansas song.

This is a great album if you actually enjoy a rainy day every once in a while. It is quite mesmerizing and hypnotic, but then of course it also runs into the danger of being repetitious. Perhaps it depends most upon your mood when you listen to it, as to what form it takes. Either way, it is definitely worth checking out! And just one more thing, the album title Sweet Shadows is perhaps the perfect description for the mood and tone of this album.

5 out of 5 stars I love pgroove!.......2005-09-25

I just bought this cd about 3 weeks ago, learning from a buddy of mine how awesome they are, and plus they are from my home town of Savannah Georgia, so I knew I had to give it a try. When I got the cd I listened to it all the way, and couldn't stop listening to it for like a week, then I bought tickets to see them on Halloween, and recently just bought their other cd(which is also fab). I am totally excited about seeing them on Halloween I've heard that they are so much more intense live.

2 out of 5 stars Slightly better than Perpetual Yawn.......2005-07-01

With no disrespect to those who wrote positive reviews, I find this release only slightly better than "All This Everything" [...] But hey, at least I enjoyed Teakwood Betz off of this release!

4 out of 5 stars Southern Trance Jam Rock.......2005-04-24

This was the best thing to come out of Georgia in 2003. If you want to get a free taste of what they sound like in a live setting download a free show from the internet archive. Kind of reminds me of early Phish crossed with Micky era Widespread Panic.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2005-03-20

This CD is worth every penny, and is sure to please. These guys have come a long way since J.J. Cagneys in Savannah, Georgia! If you ever get a chance to see them live you'll be hooked...

5 out of 5 stars unbelievably powerful.......2005-03-19

I am in shock at the one listener, R. Pinto, that completely dissed this musical masterpiece. I guess there's always one....
Walking in Place is one of the best songs I've ever heard, so powerful, so beautiful. This is one of the most talented bands I know of, and having been blessed to see them live on multiple occasions, I was blown away at their live performances. All of them. And I am going to go back and see them every chance I get. This is one group of talented boys, and I recommend them to anyone who has taste enough to appreciate some good music.

5 out of 5 stars wow! wynton marsalis continues to grow!.......1999-08-11

with the fifth release in the swinging into the 21st century series, we find mr. marsalis continuing to explore his compositional skills. these two ballets could be easily partnered with "jump start & jazz" from a couple of years ago. the first "sweet release" reflects charles mingus' experiments with jazz ensembles from his jazz workshop era. mr. marsalis reminds us clearly that jazz is dance music, with a swing designed to get bodies (even booties) moving! the lcjo is in fine form here, even with the constraints of a ballet score. the emphasis is, of course, not so much on the soloists, but on the ensemble, creating a group swing. this is excellent! the second "ghost story," is much more thoughtful and introspective, as one might expect. this is not a leap-in-fright ghost, but more reminiscent of a haunting melody on a rainy afternoon. the smaller ensemble captures the mood and atmosphere of the piece wonderfully. as with all ballet music, this makes you want to see how the dancers moved with the music, how it was choreographed, to see what images go with the sounds. not having seen, but only heard, this music inspires the imagination to paint its own pictures to accompany these soundtracks. mr. marsalis is a first-rate composer, continuing to grow and deepen. these are great steps along that journey.

I came across this artist and album because of Kris "Thrash" Weston ex-engineer for the Orb. He produced Felt Mountain by Goldrapp as well as a number of groups in the past 15 years including Fortran 5 and Blue Pearl. She is a great artist, cute, intelligent, and complety nuts. Thats what its all about. Good for any season, but this is my Fall CD to remember.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive Drum & Bass Experimentation...........2002-11-14

....with the splendid vocal delivery and artistry of Coppe. This is probably her most energized album, full of heady beats and unusual background ambience; from Satie-esque piano interludes to full-fledged hyper-beated groove fests. This album deserves the attention of all connesseurs of electronic musical collaborations in dreamtime and vaporspace. Take a deep breath and allow the Coppe-vibes to wash all over your body. An electro-erotic experience for all willing and adventurous listeners.
