The great appeal of this 18-song collection, however, lies in its scope. By the time he'd signed with RCA in 1964, Nelson was established as a proficient Music City songsmith whose own recordings were frustratingly underappreciated. While the likes of "Nite Life," "Hello Walls," "Funny How Time Slips Away," and "Crazy" (all represented here) may have been country hits for others (Ray Price, Faron Young, Billy Walker, and Patsy Cline, respectively), young Willie's takes reflect his remarkable talents as a vocalist. Then, too, there are the likes of the obscure "Opportunity to Cry," as dark a song as ever came out of Nashville. I guess Nashvile was the roughest........2007-04-11

Willie Nelson didn't become a country music superstar until 1975, when he was 42 years old. He had been trying to make it for over 20 years before he had his breakthrough hit, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain". Before that, he was best known as a songwriter; having written hits for Patsy Cline, Ray Price, Faron Young, Billy Walker, Roy Orbison and others. He had some moderate success as a recording artist, with his biggest hit being "Touch Me" in 1962, which was a #7 Country hit. That song is on this CD, along with a few other minor hits and several non-hits. This material shows that Willie's unique singing style had been there from the beginning. Because he was so unique, prodcers often didn't know what to do with him, and sometimes stuck him with arrangements that didn't really suit him. Most of the material here works well, although not as well as when Nashville just gave up and let Willie do his own thing. This is a good sampler of Willie's early years. My personal favorite is the autobiographical "Me and Paul".

I ordered this for a member of the family looking for a few particular songs. This cd had them all and then some. He was very satisfied with the quality of the cd. I was very satisfied with Amazon service and fast shipping of seller. Great cd for all those long time Willie Nelson fans!

An Eclectic and Visionary Collection.......2006-09-25

This fascinating collection of early singles, rarities, and album tracks off of early Liberty and RCA recordings of Willie finds him searching for his voice, yet is entirely satisfying and remarkably consistent. It's a great record.

The early recordings of some of Willie's best known songs -- "Nite Life," "Crazy," "Healing Hands of Time," "Hello Walls" -- all benefit from the spare, open, and nuanced arrangements found here.

Willie's early rockabilly efforts are particularly successful -- "Rainy Day Blues" sounds a bit like early Mose Alison, and "Everything But You" could have fit easily onto a Johnny Cash or Elvis Sun Session recording.

Willie's bright and tasteful arrangement of "Bring Me Sunshine" -- perhaps the only song here that is not about a lost love and feeling blue and lonely -- clearly presages the work he would do a decade later with Booker T and the MGs on Stardust. I hope the album that track came off of is re-released in its entirety soon. Finally, his clever and economical songwriting style is highlighted in "One in a Row," one of his finest songs on an otherwise superlative album.

Fans of Willie would be well-served to pick up this early collection, it does not disappoint.

Outstanding Album.......2006-05-15

Let me start by saying that I'm not a big fan of Willie Nelson's voice and delivery of a song. But, I doubt if there will ever be (or has ever been) a songwriter of Willie's caliber....well, maybe Don Gibson? Still, this collection of early Willie Nelson is amazing, and in my opinion, his best vocal work. I'm especially partial to "Mr Record Man", "One in A Row", and "Man With the Blues". There's also an assortment of Willie Nelson penned numbers made famous by others, including "Hello Walls" and "Funny How Time Slips Away". While his take lacks the smoothness of Faron Young and Ray Price, it is interesting to see how Willie envisioned their delivery. It would be worth your time and money to grab this CD while it's still available. It presents a glance into a Willie Nelson that most folks didn't realize existed; a Willie Nelson that didn't quite fit into the Nashville Sound formula.

A Curiosity, Yet One of Willie's Best.......2005-12-03

Admittedly, I haven't heard everything in Willie's huge cataloge. But listening to this, I'm struck by how strong his voice was in the early '60s when these seminal tunes were cut. These are all wonderful genre-bending songs, relaxed, down and full of soul, with Willie's trademark, just-behind-the-beat vocal phrasing, the kind of thing jazz singers have long done. Accompaniments are generally just right, spare, bluesy and loose. Nothing here is dated. If you're a "Stardust" fan or a newcomer to Willie, you'll be greatly surprised by just how right this collection sounds. Pick it up, by all means. It's a total classic glimpse of, yes, a genius just starting out, but sounding like he's got the wisdom of an old man.

Halloween is upon us, and it's time to fire up the VCR for some primo fright-fests. True lovers of the blood & gore genre know that Italian filmmaker Dario Argento and Pittsburgh's one and only George Romero are two of the best in the biz, and both turned to the Italian art-rock group Goblin when they needed otherworldly sounds to match their nightmarish visions. Goblin is one of the only rock bands that exclusively recorded soundtracks, and this collection includes some of its most inventive and creepy work. The jazzy, percussive, synth-driven tunes will be instantly familiar to anyone who's seen Argento's Profondo Rosso (1975) or Suspiria (1977) or Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead (1978). That's a fine triple bill if you have an adventurous video store in the neighborhood, but the music works just as well on its own, especially as background music for your Halloween party, or for a little vampiric necking. awesome horror prog from the italian masters! all the "hits" are here, the themes from Profundo Russo, Suspiria, Tenebre. Goblin's songs are full of haunting atmosphere and creepy hooks, but also plenty of songs feature romantic ambience and even some funky disco influence creeps in on a few numbers. now that is scary.

A Perfectly Creepy Mood-setter.......2005-07-31

If you're a horror fan of either George Romero or Dario Argento, you probably have this CD already or will soon buy it regardless of how highly I recommend it. I'll try and tailor this review to those of you who are curious about this Goblin CD and would like to know more before buying.

Despite their association with horror films, Goblin is not a heavy-metal band. This CD contains mostly keyboard-heavy instrumental rock that goes back and forth between jazz-rock and progressive rock. There are a lot of vintage keyboards to listen to here, from warm string effects courtesy of the Solina synth, to a variety of electric harpsichords and organs. Goblin wrote music with unusual syncopations and interesting dissonances, which often remind people of either the 'Tubular Bells' LP or John Carpenter's soundtracks. In other words, it hypnotizes you and then shocks you.

Two of the strongest tracks are "Suspira" and "L'Alba dei Morti Viventi." "Suspira" starts off playful and mischievous, almost like the music from a "Harry Potter" movie but then gets darker and scarier as the rhythms and instruments change and our attention is focused on a throbbing bass guitar. "L'Alba" is from the original "Dawn of the Dead" and features a heartbeat-like bass drum and intentionally plodding chord changes on the synth. It's the perfect score for a film dealing with the Living Dead (which is what 'Morti Viventi' is translated to in English).

No compiliation is going to be perfect, but if you're looking for suitably eerie mood music to listen to while reading horror novels you cannot go wrong with this.

Excellent!.......2005-01-15

This is an amazingly creepy sound but wonderfully composed! Goblin are masters at their art. This is the perfect halloween soundtrack. This is a great CD and if there's any hestitation in your mind, then you must be insane, listen to some soundclips and see if you like. My personal favorite composition is easily the Susperia Segments.

If you love Goblin's groundbreaking horror-film scoring as much as I do, then you're gonna love my second favorite soundtrack of all time, "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" which is as furious, mysterious and driving as Goblin in the classic "Profondo Rosso" (Deep Red) and as never-wrackingly insistent as Goblin in "Tenebre."

Composed by David Shire at the same time as "Deep Red," "Pelham's" heart-stealing, mood-changing eleven-tracker sits nicely beside the Goblin Collection.

And truthfully, I throw the Beastie Boys' "Ill Communication" into the mix, 'cause their funk-jazz samples compliment these two masterful soundtacks!!

Awesome Italian Horror Soundtracks.......2003-12-27

Goblin is one of those rare bands who are famous only for soundtracks. (Ala Tangerine Dream.) After seeing a number of Italian horror flicks, and appreciating some of the music Goblin scored on them, I had to give this CD a shot. Lo and behold I got it for Xmas and popped it in right away. What can I tell you? This CD is superb! I've had it playing non stop pretty much since I unwrapped it. For me, the tracks on the second half of the CD are my favorite but I love them all. Like the other reviewers said, some of the tracks are spooky jazzish while others rely heavy on uptempo beats and synthesizers. As a whole it's a balanced CD with a good mixture of eerie styles. You can't go wrong here if you like this sort of music.

Hey Dels Fans, if you like del amitri albums like some other sucker's parade or twisted i'd be surprised if you will even recognise this album as a dels album. I couldn't believe it when I heard it and thought that it must be a mistake. My advice is to get all the other albums and forget this one. Instead, try The Wallflowers bringing down the horse, same style more polished music.

Not Where It's At.......2006-08-04

Hate to be the lone dissenter but I'm gonna be honest here. I became a Dels fan around the time of Twisted and Some Other Sucker's Parade. I'm sure I'm far from the only one in that camp. I picked up this album long ago (I've long since sold off the CD). When I gave it a listen, I thought it was a different band!

I can't say the album's bad, it's just a completely different genre of music. More Elvis Costello-ish than the melodic alt-rock balladry of sorts that filled the later releases.

If you're like me, a word of caution, this disc may not be for you. Buyer beware.

Justin Currie, in the liner notes, isn't kidding.......2005-09-11

about no choruses and too many words in these songs, but he's also right about the charm of this first album. This stuff isn't very sing-along-able (without a lot of listening and practice), despite the devotion to melody and harmonizing. Several of the songs are rapid-fire tongue-twisting soliloquies or jaded poetry rants molded by the beat and jangly guitars and a sort of punk attitude if not sound. Yet the music is lovely, poignant, affecting. Currie's younger voice is higher, more earnestly intense, but even here a talent to be appreciated. The long-winded lyrics are angry, agonized & naive sometimes but not stupid or (entirely) clueless. (I have no doubt "Crows in the Wheatfield" was inspired by Van Gogh's painting Wheatfield with Crows.) Already there are the plays on words and twists of meaning we've come to know and love in the Dels' songs.

I love the breathless adolescent rush of "Hammering Heart," "Sticks and Stones Girl" and "I Was Here"; the hopeless, sweet sadness of "Former Owner"; the biting, world-kicking, self-dissatisfied "Crows in the Wheatfield"; the hurt frustration of "Lines Running North"; and the beautiful but terrible "Keepers." Terrible in the sense of its subject, which isn't love but controlling, abusive obsession: "you may be bleeding though you're not dying, but you are dying to go/stop teasing me/I'm not seeing you leaving me."

All in all, this is a separate curiosity from the later Del CDs, is more than "mere" entertainment, but it has grown on me quite a bit since I first played it, and I go `round humming bits of this, too. The final bonus track of this reissue is a cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl." It sort of grates on the ear and they're horsing around with it-can't quite tell whether they're sending it up or they like it (or both), but it leaves you smiling.

Glasgow does it again.......2005-08-09

Recently I re-listened to this debut which I was fortunate enough to discover when it was released. What is still arresting is just the very high quality of the music - the very warm rich sound, the sophisticated songs and beautifully Beatlesque (yet utterly Scottish - passionate, ironic) harmonizing, the witty literate lyrics, the wonderful pastoral/urban melodies. This is one of those rare records you play then find yourself putting on again an hour later. A striving comparison might be early James and the English Beat minus the beat if that makes sense. I also think of the Lilac Time and Stephen Duffy's rueful village romanticism. It's astounding how utterly different this is from anything Del Amitri went on to make. It seems after this failed commercially a decision was made to change direction in a drastic way towards the commercial end. I've yet to hear anything this brilliant in the intervening years. Good stuff.

This collection of mostly extended and alternate takes is a rewarding, amusing, and sometimes insufferable collection of themes by the band most famous for underscoring the films of Italian horror director Dario Argento (Goblin's discoverer). At their worst, Goblin sound like a bunch of pre-goth druggies jamming in a dreary fusion, but their best moments spawn almost Biblical images of dismembered bodies, Satanic masses, and defiant souls forever damned. Included are longer versions of themes from Profondo Rosso (with more than a nod to Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells") and Suspiria. As the liner notes suggest, this collection attempts to demonstrate that Goblin had a musical identity independent of their famous mantle of soundtrack provider, although the tracks work best as augmented movie cues than as a concept album. --Joseph Lanza

Goblin were an italian progressive rock band who became best known for their scoring of numerous horror films,most famously for Dario Argento's(some say)best work.A casual listen might lead one to believe they were listening to an old Genesis album,but these songs worked behind scary scenes in movies.And very well,too!This volume has 6 great cuts from Profondo Rosso(DEEP RED),3 from Suspiria,1 from Squandra Antigangsters,2 from Contamination,and 4 from their rock albums(that were plundered for use in films as well).This is a great CD!

Good Compilation But Some Repeated Tracks.......2001-03-26

Here's another good compilation of Goblin's music but be forewarned: the first cut Profondo Rosso is not an alternate take but the original version we all know and love which is on The Goblin Collection. Death Dies is also on The Goblin Collection so there is some repetition here (four other Profondo Rosso cuts are also included). For me, the main reason to have this CD are the three excellent tracks from the Cherry Five debut album which to the best of my knowledge isn't available on CD. Rounding off the CD are good tracks from Suspiria, Roller, Squadra Antigangsters, and Contamination. Overall, this is a good CD to have in any collection.

Interesting, but not indispensible.......2000-06-29

This album offers a plethora of various (previously unreleased) outtakes, different versions and theme tracks from different films. This in itself is an interesting collection, albeit with a few negative aspects:

Many of the outtakes and variations have later been included on the re-releases of the various goblin soundtracks (e.g. "Profondo Rosso" and "Suspiria"). One track ("Il Resvegno del Serpente") is NOT a part of an original soundtrack but a "plain" Goblin track from their debut LP "Roller" (though it has been used as part of a soundtrack in the italian release of the film "Vampyr" later) - still, it has a very different feel to it than the other tracks and thus sticks out in an unpleasant way.

Furthermore, since some variations (e.g. tracks 3 and 4, "Deep Shadows", part 1 and 2,respectively) are slightly repetitive, it can become a bit boring to listen to the complete album in one go.

That is not to say the featured material were not interesting - far from it! However, the order the featured songs have been arranged could be optimized - well, what's a programmable CD player for?

Not the best, but worth having.......2000-04-07

If you're a budding Goblin fan, this is not the album for you. I would recommend Vol. 1 higher because it has a sampling of just about every soundtrack they worked on. This centers on the "Profondo Rosso", "Suspiria", and "Contamination" soundtracks. While a lot of the "Profondo Rosso" tracks are great, especially "Death Dies", "Profondo Rosso", and the remix of the title song, "Suspiria" is not represented very well. The main title theme for "Suspiria" is on Vol. 1 and the tracks here are not very good. "Contamination" takes an acquired taste to appreciate, but "Connexion" is complex in its simplicity. Overall, this is for die-hard Goblin fans only, not for beginners delving into the world of Goblin.

These Rare Tracks Are Out Of This World !.......2006-12-08

Four of these rare tracks are some of most mesmerizing, melancholic, poignant and tender songs that Morrissey has ever written. "Lost" and "Now I Am A Was" are wonderfully sad but brilliantly sung tunes. "The Edges Are No Longer Paralell" is an intense and riveting song. "I Can Have Both" exemplifies Morrissey's melodic mastery. Morrissey is music's most literate lyricist and captivating crooner even when he basks in pessimism. Give him credit, his "Meat is Murder" song induced thousands to be vegetarian. He may brood but he does have compassion.

Brief blush of brilliance..........2005-04-23

B-sides compilation from Japan gives us an idea of what Morrissey had "left over" from the 'Maladjusted' sessions: and what leftovers they are! I'd still like to know whose idea it was to leave "Lost" off the record, it's so strong and trembling an ode to a fragile human condition(without losing Moz's masculine indifference)that it could give non-fans new hope. "Now I Am a Was" and "Edges Are No Longer Parallel" are equally stunning, but the centerpiece of this collection turns out to be "This is Not Your Country", a long, winding, steadily-paced but endlessly intriguing bit of political whiplash. Morrissey really is the king crooner!

How does he do it?.......2004-09-08

It never ceases to amaze me, the quality of Morrissey's b-sides. Here is another example. "Rare tracks" contains 6 absolute gems. There should be nothing rare about them, there too good. "lost" however, is available on the best of Morrissey CD.

As with most Morrissey B-sides, the songs are often stronger and more interesting than songs that made his recent patchy albums. Quite how LOST was excluded from Maldadjusted in favour of He Cried for example is a mystery only the Moz himself can answer. The rest of the songs are almost equalto this though if i were to make one minor criticism, the music on This Is Not Your country is a tad laboured and does not match the bite of the lyric.Definately worth a listen as a whole package. Where is the new stuff !!!!!

Not a purchase I can recommend.......2002-03-04

I bought this CD using the following logic:

I like the music from "Dawn of the Dead" (released as "Zombi" in Italy) but the CD will probably be repeative. I was EXTREMELY pleased with the selections on the first entry in the DRG Goblin anthology/retrospective series, so I'd probably be content with this one, too.

I'm sorry to say that I was wrong. The first disc in the series really DID contain the very best of Goblin's film music. Most of the selections here probably did just fine as support pieces for the movies they were created for, but as independent works they just aren't all that interesting.

The "Buio Omega" cuts are drab--think Jean-Michele Jarre on a bad day--and mostly repeated from the first Goblin disc.

The "Tenebre" remix is cool and rocky in the way the "Zombi" tracks are, and is one of the CDs high points. It's definately one of the better efforts from Gobin. It's a nice revamping of the "Tenebre" theme from the first volume.

The three selections from "Phenomena" are also mostly regrettable; Jennifer is just dull, and the alternate version of the Phenomena theme is a repeat from the first Goblin disc. (A really cool track--very much classic Italian film music and a nice instrumental piece to boot--but it's already been presented in the series!) Sleepwalking is the only worthwhile cut of the trio.

The "Mark the Coakroach" cuts are so-so pieces and I once again think they probably worked in the context of the film, but they come across as weak jazz/rock fuzion pieces here. Not really bad, but not rising above the level of background noise either. (The Dance is the best of the three, but drags on for too long.)

As for what was for me the "main attraction," the Zombi/Dawn of the Dead cuts, they didn't disappoint. I found the two peices I were really looking for--the main title music and the main action music Zaratozom. Unfortunately, they repeated the film's main theme from the first Goblin disc here. So, two out of three tracks I already had... another disappointment.

The "Amo Non Amo" tracks are nice pieces, once again sounding like typical italian film music from the Seventies. They, once again, stand as average Goblin efforts, with "Yell" being the only of the trio that barely manages to rise above background noice status.

I really recommend that you stay away from this disc, unless you're the world's biggest Goblin fan who must own EVERYTHING! It really isn't a good value for the price.

Another Fine Goblin Collection But With More Repetition.......2001-03-26

For those of you who are planning to build your Goblin collection around the four volume DRG Records series (which I did), it can get kinda frustrating with the repeated tracks on some of the CDs. On this the third volume, the first two tracks from Buio Omega are repeated from The Goblin Collection. So are Phenomena (from Phenomena, which is an alternate version, not the album version) and L'alba Dei Morti Viventi (from Zombi). The Tenebre Remix doesn't differ that greatly from the classic title track, either(that might be a good thing). Still, it's another fine collection here, with some rare tracks from the film Amo Non Amo (which, when released in the states, were replaced by Burt Bacharach songs, sheesh!!!!!!!) being the main reason why I bought this CD. It's definitely worth having.

Almost, but not quite.......2000-05-04

This CD does not come close to the Zombi anniversary CD, as this only has three tracks from the Dawn of the Dead Soundtrack, but it is a good starter. I had this CD before the Dawn CD, so it was nice to at least have a few good Dawn songs before my Zombi CD arrived. Other tracks are good, but not as memorable as classic Dawn tracks.

Excellent progressive soundtrack music.......1999-10-14

Goblin is an always-excellent Italian band most noted for their film scores. This, DRG's third compilation, would stand better as part of a larger set rather than on its own. While the music contained herein is for the most part very good, it only offers a few glimpses of the many sounds Goblin offered in over a decade of work. There's not a lot of consistancy here in this compilation, but nevertheless it is all uniquely fascinating progressive rock/electronic soundtrack music.

If I could have given less than 1 star to this I would have. When I first heard them in "Dawn of the Dead" I thought they were a preprogramed track on a keyboard. If you listen to this album, your ears will begin to bleed, your brain will leak out your nose, and may god have mercy on your soul.

Gorgeous music that does the originals justice.......2007-02-23

After years of trying, I finally got my hands on a copy of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "Rare Tracks" recently (I didn't pay $40.99). I was ecstatic and rightfully so. This disc has ten absolutely beautiful songs by the duo I consider to be the best in hip hop history. Nine are remixes of songs from their three perfect classic albums, 1991's "All Souled Out" EP, 1992's "Mecca and the Soul Brother," and 1994's "The Main Ingredient." What's so awesome about these remixes is that not only are they fitted with a completely different beat, but the whole mood and feel of the songs is shifted as well. It's like they're completely different compositions. These all do the originals justice because they're so different. The previously unreleased track, "It's Not a Game," is also wonderful, I'm glad they could dig that up from the vaults. Fans of PR+CLS with a little cash in the pocket should not hesitate to order "Rare Tracks."

The first song is the remix to "Searchin'." Quite honestly I like this remix significantly better than the original, which I always liked but was never one of my favorites. This has a cute keyboard line and great vibes, it is much more upbeat and the female R&B chorus is replaced by Pete chatting with some ladies in his lovable baritone. The result is a much more playful and happy sounding song. Similarly, the "Take You There" remix sounds much less formal, with a funkier and harder beat and the chorus replaced by instrumentals and DJ scratches. While "Lots of Lovin" is one of my favorite songs of all time, the remix on this collection is spectacular. There is not one single element of the original on the remix at all, the two songs are not even remotely similar. Each of the verses are completely fresh and different, the beat is fast yet toned, and the hook is C.L. saying "Lots of loooovin..." It's a great song and I'm so glad I was able to finally hear it. Where the original "I Got a Love" is joyful and romantic, the remix is playful, as Pete's chorus humorously asks, "Do you want to sex me now, or later?" I love "It's Not a Game," the beat is awesome with the vocal sample, it sounds like it could have come from "All Souled Out," and C.L.'s performance is great as always. The "Mecca and the Soul Brother" mix strips the beat down and creates a different sound. The "Creator" mix is actually a one-minute unreleased instrumental. Rather than completely replace the "Straighten It Out" production, the remix simply alters it in a tasteful manner. The remix to "T.R.O.Y.," undoubtedly one of the greatest hip hop songs ever, is interesting to hear. While not nearly as effective or beautiful as the original, C.L.'s words have a different effect over less moving music. I really like the remix to "Get on the Mic," which is full of saxophones and upbeat bass, making the once menacing cut sound joyful.

More perfect music from Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. What more could you ask for? At this point in my life after keeping the original 3 PR+CLS albums on constant rotation for years and listening to those albums constantly, I anticipate getting the same enjoyment out of "Rare Tracks." Highly recommended.

You think you've heard it all!? These are those remixes you've always been missing! It's incredible how they sound 'new' again after all this time!!

I hate to use the word "but".......2003-05-14

Pete Rock and CL, it gets no better, that said this one comes up a little short, but if you truly appreciate the boys as I do maybe it doesn't matter ?

My reasons for liking this album are mainly tracks: 1, 2, and 4. Very solid variations of songs I loved, maybe even improvements ?

If this cd had set me back a normal $15-18, I'd leave it there and hit it with 4 stars, but at [the item price]for 3 songs, well you catch my drift, it's a little steep.

The other productions while interesting don't improve on their predecessors in any substancial way the least of which is TROY.

I have to say when I heard this version of TROY it sorta bummed me out and here's why: I'm gonna go bold here and say that the original version of TROY is one of, if the not the all time greatest hip hop songs ever put to tape. That's a big statement and not one I make lightly.

Be that as it may, the version here is a throw away, it definately doesn't do justice to the orignal and mind you this is a song I like a lot so even if it was close I'd swing for it.

I wonder if the artists, or anyone who worked with them ever check out these comments ? If they do I'd be really interested in hearing what they have to say, what was the motivation behind this ? Maybe I'm taking it all too seriously, but their body of work is so small it tends to invite hyper-sensitive analysis because there just isn't very much of it.

As much as I like the music of Pete and CL the price on this one sets the expectation very high, and at the end of the day I suspect it's a case of two really talented guys screwing around, which again, at $15 bucks would be one thing, at [item price]+ S & H it's another.

Still and all, Pete and CL on a bad day, blow doors on anything I've heard the last 5 years on the radio, maybe longer. So as much as this album didn't do what I hoped you have to take that in context of the garbage currently being played, would 3 cd's of [other garbage] equaling the cost of this one outweigh the negative ? It would be a photo finish.

Rare Tracks should not be looked over.......2003-04-04

Normmally when i think of the word remix, i think of all the Puff Daddy and Nelly remixes of today. These songs involve little change to the original and usually only add an extra rap verse in or have new guest apperances. Take all that you think now of the word remix and go back to the original definition.
This album contains many songs already known and loved by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, yet this album contains all new songs. Each remix is a new creation of the original that can stand completely alone. These songs have great grooves and give a different spin on some great classics. You could listen to this album over and over again. A great album for any real hip-hop (non-pop) fan. Try and get a copy of this album

Steve Henry - Pete Rock & CL Smooth Rare Tracks.......1999-09-24

Like fine wine, this duo get better. As an avid fan of this duo, this album comes at a time when Hip Hop, in my opinion has lost its direction somewhat. These two show what can be achieved when Hip Hop is taken back to the essence. This may be an old album in terms of the tracks on this cd, but I dare you to find anything today that even comes close. Pete Rocks remix skills are second to none and Cl's flow is to quote "smooth & sequential". Favorite track, "lots of lovin'". This to me is what remixing a track is all about. Compare it to the original, which was good by all means and what you have is a kicking track that appeals to both the ladies and the homeboys. The beat sits at a pace that flows and CL's lyrics, in comparison with the original are more direct and hardcore but still maintaining that element that is unique to CL. Every track on this album is a killer. From Take you there to Get on the mike. A lot can be learnt from this compilation. Perhaps record industry bosses will take note and stop filtering the below par compilations they do release and give the real followers of this genre what they want, or even more the point, what they need!
