Album Details

Today More Than Ever, Buenos Aires is a Tourist Capital on a Par with the Most Beautiful, Intense and Seductive in the World, and Tango, as We Already Know, is Its Most Distinctive Sound, the Sound Realization of the 'porteño' Spirit. "Tango Chill Sessions" Celebrates this Tradition by Combining Wandering Pianos, Melancholic Bandoneons and Guitars from the Poor Side of Town with Slow Electronic Percussion, Producing an Original, Sensual, Landscape Effect. "Tango Chill Sessions" Uses Tango Vocabulary Without Losing the Essence of the Sound that Expresses the Taste of Buenos Aires Like No Other. It Includes Versions of "Adios Nonino", "Libertango" and "Verano Porteño" which Reset the Context for all the Once Expressed Feeling by the Master and Composer of Such Illustrious Pages, Astor Piazzolla.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD to mellow out..........2005-11-13

This is a very nice compilation of Tango classics that has been remastered perfectly. You'll enjoy all of the songs this CD contains. The CD is very good, and if you had a bad day, it'll actually calm you down, since it's very jazzy. Overall, a good CD you must have if you collect Latin American music.

4 out of 5 stars "The Day Tango Met Chill Out".......2004-11-20

If you like electronica chill out and tango this is a wonderful blend of the two. I personally cannot vouch completely for tango because the most of it I hear is much older so I cannot determine the quality of it. But I do know chill out and honestly most of it does bores me but the beats and melody are so different because of the tango part of it it's like something new. This mix is a very smooth, and relaxing. Not necessarily a must buy, but in it's own right it is very good and mostly a good purchase.

4 out of 5 stars A great successor to Vol. 1.......2005-10-03

(...)

The first track (which is a remix of the last track of the album) "Abasto Sunset" by [G-Spliff] is a dark, melancholic instrumental song, that does introduce the album, but does not foreshadow its mood at all. But in its own way this short intro is very intriguing, very deep and very fascinating, if it were just longer. The second version of this track, namely the "original" version of "Abasto Sunset" is far less powerful. Nevertheless it leaves you with some sort of an aftertaste wanting you to start the album all over again.

The second track (Tango Tripping Project - El Exilio del Tango) reminds me very much more of the various TangoFusion / Electronic Tango CDs that were out in the first wave of new tango music 1-2 years ago. It is then where you realize this album will definitely follow in Volume 1's footsteps. And I could just go on praising almost every single track on the compilation. The tracks meld into each other as if they were meant to be on that compilation. Definitely an album that has a permanent place in my iPod.

But then I would prefer you to go out and listen to it yourself.

A side note for tango dancers: this album is very much danceable, although it is a lot slower than Volume 1 - but I think you might actually prefer Vol. 2 for dancing.

3 out of 5 stars A good, but dissappointing followup to the first..........2005-09-14

I own the first vol and expected this to be more of the same, which would of made me a lot happier. I felt that the tracks on this album were slower and over-simplified (not enough instruments or variety) compared to the first. Picking slower tracks just took out the energy that the original had. Still, the slower pace of this CD makes it a good chill album. The tango element is still there, yet I heard a little bit more piano that I wanted. And there are a few tracks with vocals - that's just something I don't ever want to hear in something like this(the first didn't have any).
Overall, good to listen to but doesn't compare well to the first. A lot better than other tango chill albums (not like there are many!). If you haven't listened to the first yet, BUY THAT ONE. Then consider this.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix of Brazilian Music.......2003-11-04

This is a wonderful, eclectic collection of bossa nova, funk, MPB and even one example of bossa nova's current fusion with bass music. It was put together by legendary artist, Marcos Valle. Some songs are better than others, but overall it's a wonderful CD definitely not worth missing!

    5 out of 5 stars GRAN COMPILACION!!!.......2003-08-26

5 out of 5 stars True Brazilian Chill with Brazilian Jazz & Bossa Novas * * *.......2003-03-03

This is a true Brazilian Gem, especially since these cuts were picked by a true legend: Marcos Valle. We have here a little bit of everything for everybody; Brazilian Jazz cuts, Bossa Nova classics performed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto; MPB (Pop-type of music from Brasil), etc. etc.
But what I think is the most important factor in this compilation is the introduction Marcos Valle does to many of us of great Brazilian groups and artists that hardly make it outside Brasil.
If you are a TRUE Brazilian music fan, get this CD, it's a gem..............

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better!.......2003-02-05

I am little angry about this double CD set. A lot of the tracks sound like adult contemporary lite FM or something like that. More bland than innovative. If you want some real chill out grooves just go for the real thing and listen to Verve's Bossa Nova Brazil compilation.

3 out of 5 stars too much jazz and not enough house.......2003-07-23

I have the first two of this series and both are regulars both by the pool and after dinner with friends. They are fantastic. I put all four on in a row and they provide consistantly good music either background or upfront depending on the volume set. So I bought this one as soon as I saw it. It isnt as good as the others. CD1 takes forever to find a groove. Too much fluttery flute and dischordant sax for me. Deep grooves with a sax or flute on top that doesnt seem to meld with the beat is not chill, it is distracting. There is some good stuff in there, but a mood making cd to play all the way thru, it is not.

    ...

5 out of 5 stars Superior quality deep house.......2003-03-10

Very little to say other than it's one of the best deep house sets I have... and I have MANY!

Bruno outdoes himself once again, weaving soul and latin rythms together in a beautifully executed set (on 2 CDs), beginning rather lively yet still chilled at around 124 bpm on CD1 and picking up to no more that 127 bpm and keeping it steady throughout CD2.

My favorites "Mahal Kita (I Love You) (Sounds Of Soul's Funkessential Remix)" on CD1 and "Music for the People" on CD2 are gems (10 rating). The rest of the tracks I would say hover above 8 in my personal rating. If you weren't sure whether chill-house is more loungy or danceable, this work definitely drags the pendulum towards danceable as it progresses.

This is deep house music... thanks Bruno.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent, latin-flavored chill out.......2005-08-11

I have a lot of CDs and this one has moved to the top of my playlist. On this two-CD compilation, there are 23 tracks that are mid- to downtempo: some have a flamenco quality, others a Balearic or a bossa quality. But all of them work together pretty well and deliver relaxing, melodic tracks with a laid-back groove behind them. You can listen to them again and again...

If you already like the styles of José Padilla (think early Café del Mar) or Nacho Sotomayor, then you'll probably enjoy the artists on this CD. I hope they release a "Flamenco Chill In 2." I want more!

5 out of 5 stars hot, hot, HOT!!.......2005-02-10

This is a fantastic CD that I picked up one day in Buenos Aires. When I walked by the CD store and heard incredibly sexy music blasting out, I asked what I was listening to - the duenyo handed me this CD and I've been hooked ever since.

    5 out of 5 stars Great album!!.......2006-08-09

The other reviews are good enough, but I just wanted to give this CD 5 stars because it is so good. I like Chill 1, but this is my favorite of the 3 CD's in this series. Several of the songs (by Preta Gil & Joyce) were so good that I got their individual albums. Some songs are new (to me!) and some are old songs remade, but all are terrific!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Double Disc CD of MPB.......2003-11-15

I find the previuos review very helpful - however I actually enjoyed this one a bit better than the first. The first one, compiled by Marcos Valle, was solid but had some pretty iffy tracks on there. This one, compiled by Joyce, is a bit better than that one through in through. The compilation is made by WEA International, is a double disc set of some musica popular Brasil (MPB) and some older Bossa Nova.

It features some of the legendary singers and songwriters of Brazil along with some of the not so publicized contemporary artists or popular artists through the years. You'll see Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Milton Nascimento, Hermeto Pascoal, Gilberto Gil's tunes in there along with Bebel Gilberto, Kaleidoscopio, Preta Gil, Sonia Rosa, Tania Maya, Zuco 103 and the like. The musical styles range from MPB to some classic Bossa Nova and in the end, CD 1 is stronger than CD 2.

In the end, this is a solid compilation which I think is stronger than the first Chill Brazil. I like how some of the old tunes are mixed here, and the classic Jobim sound. My favorite cut is, well, the Joyce exclusive which has hints of her classic "Feminia" written all over it. Gilberto Gil's "O Lugar Do Nosso Amor" is also cool - I liked the hint of "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce" in it even then. My gripe? Well, again, it's not the strongest of MPB, and was including Marcos Valles "Crickets Sing for Ana Maria" an oversight? (it's track 12 on his Chill Brazil). Finally - WEA released a few other cd's mixed by Eddy De Clercq titled "Boss-A-Troniq" and "Boss-A-Troniq II". They're pretty solid new Bossa Comps which feature Towa Tei, Nicola Conte, EBTG, Truby Trio, etc. - music popular in 2000-2001.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad....Not Great........2003-11-04

I was disappointed with this CD, because I got the previous release, "Chill: Brazil 1" and enjoyed that thoroughly. This collection is not bad, however it's not nearly as good as the first one released. It was compiled by legendary singer, Joyce (whose songs are by far the best of the CD). There is also a great song by Azymuth on here, "Tamborim, Cuica, Ganza e Berimbau", which is definitely worth checking out, however it's probably better to buy the Azymuth CD that has that song, then to buy this whole album. There are other really good songs on here, but it all depends on if you want to buy a CD for ony 5 or 6 good songs (out of 38 - remember it's a double disc set).

    Album Description

Chill: Brazil embodies the very essence of what Brazilian music is about. Singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil gathered a selection of songs, both old and new that gives Chill Brazil III the same journeylike discovery that Volume II had. The 2-CD classic release is a must-have for music lovers.

1 out of 5 stars Review of Chill Brazil, Vol. 3.......2007-02-21

I was very disappointed listening to most of the songs in Vol.3, especially after listening to Chill: Brazil, Vol. 2. In fact, I've only listened to it once because it's not relaxing at all. At work, I normally listen to music. When I listen to Vol. 2, I feel relaxed like I'm on a beach in Brazil. But, I just don't get the same feeling when listening to Vol. 3. I hope your Vol. 4 is much like Vol. 2. Sorry about the low rating, but I have to tell the truth and also to help you decide what to put on your next volume.

3 out of 5 stars Wake Me When We Get to volume 4..........2005-06-09

There are many Brazilian compilations on the market. Take your pick between what you want - European based, cutting edge, you've got Brazilectro and several knock-offs. Brazil, cutting edge, you've got dozens from MTV pop rips to Brazilounge 1-3. But the "Chill Brazil" series in general had a twist- they would often be compiled by some tremendous musicians. Marcos Valle put together the first, Joyce the second, and this one has none-other than the Minister of Culture of Brasil, Gilberto Gil. Knowing that, I had to get it!

Which is what makes it difficult to give this a lower rating! The good: CD1 starts out like the others, a classic Jobim track "So Tinha De Ser Com Voce", followed up with Joao Gilberto's "Zingaro". Both priceless tunes. Celso Fonseca follows up shortly with "Slow Motion Bossa Nova", taken on his pre- Six Degrees Records album. You've also got a cute track by Maria Rita, daughter of the legendary vocalist Elis Regina. CD Two has a few good cuts on it too - Baden Powell, Elis Regina and Gilberto Gil's own works to name... unfortunately the few. Besides those cuts and a couple of others, I hardly found a great deal of tunes that I wouldn't push the "FF" button on. And admittedly, a good bulk of the cuts here are a little bit dull, to boot.

I have to recommend against this one - especially at the staggering import price listed here. Wait until it's available (if it happens) as a domestic like the others were or just get it from an independent vendor or your local Brasil shop. This has a great deal of filler. I love Gilberto Gil's works and his albums, his message, and especially his live performances which are always very spirited and original. But not all of the tracks here were so great IMO. I mean why not use his own "Refazenda" - it is such a good song! Anyways, I was a bit disappointed but there are still some quality tracks on this. Maybe this series has run its course.

2 out of 5 stars Not really a Chill-Out Trip Hop CD, Not Really a Flamenco CD.......2006-01-16

You would think that mixing the medatitive and soothing qualities of Flaminco with a "chill" trip hop beat and/or background track would be a natural but not with this CD. It delivers neither. It's not a true 'chill out' dance CD - just having mellow music with attempts at soft beats or rhythm doesn't really count. The Flamenco playing is mixed way too low and while I don't claim to be a Flaminco expert, even I can tell it's pretty weak playing so I'm not sure who would really be happy with this CD. It's also not world or new agey enough to use as mediatative as I think most everyone will be displeased with the weak musicianship associated with this CD. Get a soft Flaminco CD and/or stick with the main dance chill CD's series - this one is neither.

5 out of 5 stars Flamenco Chill Sessions.......2004-11-29

The full title reads: Flamenco Chill Sessions - the day flamenco met chill out. ..Well, when it did it, it simply gave birth to some kind of magic. Here we don't just talk about music: this is a real piece of art, an "Acoustic Alchemy" (ohps!, those are great as well!). What an incredible surprise those spanish guitar strings playing along with some of the most pleasant chillout moods around..!!
