D'Angelo is obviously inspired by the progressive soul of the early '70s, but he has also borrowed carefully from the hip-hop of his own generation. Like many of his contemporaries, he has recorded a tribute to marijuana--the album's title--but it's far wittier than most. It takes the form of a conventional love song ("Brown sugar babe, I gets high off your love ... that's why my eyes are a shade blood burgundy") and mimics intoxication in its throbbing bass lines and reverb-heavy organ. Another song, with a title too profane to print, is a blunt tale of infidelity and murder, but in contrast to most rap fantasies, D'Angelo's blues-like narrative acknowledges such acts have serious consequences. Best of all is the Prince-like "Higher," which combines the spiritual love of God and the carnal love of a woman into one dizzying, organ-fueled hymn. D'Angelo is still rather clumsy with lyrics, and he leans too heavily on ballads over dance numbers, but he has enough talent to grow in any of several directions. It will be an exciting story to follow and one would be foolish to miss the first chapter. --Geoffrey Himes

D'Angelo - Brown Sugar.......2007-06-11

D'Angelo's (A.K.A. Michaela Eugene Archer) debut album was "Brown Sugar" (1995). D'Angelo is a multi-talented musician- singer, song writer pianist, guitarist and record producer. This short ten track release is an impressive groundbreaking album full of excellent music. The album's opener is the smooth title track "Brown Sugar", a feel good love track with a great vibe to it. The laid back "Alright" follows, D'Angelo laces the track with some soulful vocals. "Jonz In My Bonz" was composed by D'Angelo and his former girlfriend Angie Stone, who is also the mother of his son. One of my early favourites is "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine", D'Angelo croons away. D'Angelo sings about the scenario of finding his best friend with his wife on "Sh*t, D***, Motherf**ker". "Smooth" is just that, while "Cruisin" has D'Angelo doing a cover on a Smokey Robinson classic - delivering another highlight track. Soulful ballads follow in "When We Get By" & Lady". My personal favourite track on this album is the closer "Higher", D'Angelo does take his audience higher with this exceptional song. It would take D'Angelo, five years to deliver another album, with Voodoo (2000) a solid album worth checking out. D'Angelo has dealt with some battles in recent year's whether it be with drugs and rehabilitation or nearly dying in a car crash, heard hes working on a new album wish him all the best with that. "Brown Sugar" is definitely the D'Angelo album to have, full of soulful feel good music, D'Angelo took his audience on a journey to remember.

A Classic!.......2007-06-08

I don't know why I didn't purchase D'Angelo's CD when he first hit the airwaves, but this CD has become on of my all-time favorites! Between this and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite you can't miss!

D'Angelo- Brown Sugar.......2007-06-07

Where did D come from??? He comes on the scene and just shakes everything up with is smooth sultry neo soul style that no one else could compete with in the day. Regardless of what i say in this review this album will be an all time great because it started the neo soul movement. But if you like the dance/party r&b of today, you probably will not like this type of album because it is sticktly soul music with a band and all music is played not engineered. Which is very good for a change. And ontop of that D's vocals are unmatched. He has such a silky smooth falsetto that is uncompareable. This album will move you. Because he just gets deep down in the soul with his music, that you swear its his soul singing. I mean the shere grooviness to the single "Lady" alone makes the album worth purchaseing. Then the laid back, rolling track "When We Get By" you will find yourself grooving to weather you like it or not. From the opening song "Brown Sugar" takes you on a laid back ride that you wont forget in a long time. I can assure you there will never be another album unless its from D like this. He just knows how to get in your soul with his music. And i heard it took him 6 years to finish recording this album which explains why it is for the most part perfect. But like i said dont by this album expecting Usher R&B, because you will be mistaken. But none the less it is worth buying for your laid back chill nights with your girl!

D'angelo made a classic.......2007-05-07

D'angelo is another great singer who is in a class by himself. Its kind of hard to ignore the jazz and hip hop influences throughout this album. D'Angelo breathes life into every song and makes it hard for you to dislike it. The brother has talent. For starters anybody who didnt know that Brown Sugar was about weed is kind of slow. Brown Sugar, Chocolate Thai are old nicknames for mary jane but the song is still funky(I cant believe I said the word funky). Other excellent recordings are ALRIGHT, JONZ IN MY BONZ, ME AND THOSE DREAMIN EYES OF MINE, SMOOTH, WHEN WE GET BY, LADY etc. Bottom Line: D'Angelo's Brown Sugar is an album you can listen straight through without skipping a track. D'Angelo holds it down with the smooth vocals over beautiful production just a classic album period. Even though I liked his second album Voodoo, it cant compare with Brown Sugar.

Smooth music devoid of flash but rich in vintage hip-hop and soul dominates the accompaniment to this urban love story. Mary J. WARNING - DO NOT BUY THIS CD. This CD is infected with DRM, a technology that not only limits what you can do with the music but actually affects the ability of your computer to do other unrelated tasks and opens you up to viruses and privacy infringements. Sony has actually recalled this CD and by all rights it should no longer be for sale on Amazon. In general, don't buy any CDs that are labeled "Copy Protected" or are made by Sony.

I like my Brown Sugar WITHOUT POISONOUS SPYWARE!!!.......2005-11-15

This is one of those Sony CD's that contains "XCP" spyware. XCP was written with the intent of concealing its presence and operation from the owner of the computer, and once installed, elements of the software run continuously -- even when no Sony-BMG music CD is in use. It provides no clear uninstallation option.

Additionally, without notifying users, the software appears to contact a remote machine under your control.

Sony has shocked and angered people over this issue. Software that deceives the owner of the computer it runs upon and opens that computer up to attacks by third parties may be expected to come from malicious cyber-attacks; it is certainly not expected nor acceptable to be distributed and sold to paying customers by a major music company.

Sony should temporarily halt manufacturing CDs with XCP and reexamine "all aspects" of their "content protection initiative."

If Sony truly intends to undo the harm that they have caused, they should immediately and publicly commit to the following measures:

1) Sony should recall all CDs that contain the XCP and SunnComm MediaMax technology. It must include removing all infected CDs from store shelves as well as halting all online sales of the affected merchandise.

A recent New York Times article said that well over 2 million infected CDs with the XCP technology are in the marketplace and have yet to be sold.

2) Sony should remove from all current and future marketing materials statements like that on http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html that say the cloaking software "is not malicious and does not compromise security."

3) Sony should widely publicize the potential security and other risks associated with the XCP and SunnComm MediaMax technology to allow the 2.1 million consumers who have already purchased the CDs to make informed decisions regarding their use of those CDs. The publicity campaign should include, at a minimum, issuing a public statement describing the risks and listing every Sony CD, DVD or other product that contains XCP or SunnComm MediaMax. The publicity campaign should be advertised in a manner reasonably calculated to reach all consumers who have purchased the products, in all markets where the CDs have been sold.

4) Sony should cooperate fully with any interested manufacturer of anti-virus, anti-spyware, or similar computer security tools to facilitate the identification and complete removal of XCP and SunnComm MediaMax from the computers of those infected. In particular, Sony should publicly waive any claims it may have for investigation or removal of these tools under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and any similar laws.

5) Sony should offer to refund the purchase price of infected CDs or, at the consumer's election, provide a replacement CD that does not contain the XCP or SunnComm technology. For those consumers who choose to retain infected CDs, develop and make widely available a software update that will allow consumers to easily uninstall the technology without losing the ability to play the CD on their computers.

In addition, consumers should not be required to reveal any personally identifying information to Sony in order to access the update, as Sony is currently requiring.

6) Sony should compensate consumers for any damage to their computers caused by the infected products, including the time, effort, and expenditure required to remedy the damage or verify that their computer systems or networks were or were not altered or damaged by XCP or SunnComm MediaMax products.

I'm not buying any more Sony CD's until they do the above!

Sony has gone too far. Until they recall all XCP DRM discs and hand out free copies to exploited consumers then I will continue to boycott them. Five stars for Don't give Sony a penny till they make a full applogy for this mess. Don't buy this cd.

Can Seriously Damage Your Computer/DANGEROUS/Do NOT Buy.......2005-11-08

*Probably* this disc won't cause problems on non-computer players (or on Macs, apparently), but it can *seriously* damage your Windows-based computer even now, and probably destroy future versions of the operating system.

While there are numerous Bad Possibilities inherent in using this disc's proprietary player software on any existing Windows 95/98/NT/2K/ME/XP system which result in annoyances and problems that can be worked around, i read recently that F-Secure tested it on Windows Longhorn/Vista and discovered that it completely destroyed that operating system.

As reported at http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/10/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html (which has been cited in other reviews of copy-protected CDs), this CD requires you to use its proprietary player software to listen to it on your computer, in order t prevent you from making more than three copies of the music.

This player installs dangerous (and very poorly written, making it more dangerous) malware called a "rootkit", which is undetectable and almost unremovable, even by the top virus/spyware protection products, on your system without your knowledge or permission.

The installed malware is unstable, resulting in the possibility of system crashes or data corruption, and removing it is likely to render your computer's CD or DVD discs completely unuseable.

And, beyond that, because of how poorly written this thing is, it provides a handy back door for any malicious person to install undectable worms or other malware on your computer.

Don't buy this disc or any other from SONY/BMG until they stop packaging them with this dangerous malware.

(Actual star rating is about Negative 1000, but Amazon's system won't allow that.)

This CD will break your PC.......2005-11-08

Don't play this CD on your PC, it does something that screws up the operating system. I had to re-install Windows :-(

Serviceable Tchaikovsky Ballet Interpretation by Andre Previn.......2006-12-24

This is a good rendering of three of Tchaikovsky's most well known ballets--Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and the Nutcracker. Andre Previn conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.

The sound is crisp, the orchestra plays handsomely, Previn leads the orchestra well. The Nutcracker, for example, is a nice interpretation and, at Christmas time, adds an enjoyable element to the household as one plays the music.

I would not say that this is an inspired CD, treading new territory in interpreting Tchaikovsky. But it is a well done work and will be pleasing to most listeners.

dull previn.......2005-08-01

i like the playing at times from the london synphony but previns interpertation ruins it.these are great masterpeices that deserve better,iv never liked the way previn does his music to begin with to dull,not a good conductor,and when the london synphony got him in the late 60s he was pretty inexperienced as a conductor of classical music and it shows here

Tchaikovsky's greatest music........2002-09-08

Tchaikovsky was one of the most beloved classical music composers. Many of his compositions -- including his piano and violin concertos -- are among the most popular of all classical compositions. But Tchaikovsky's finest compositions were his three ballets, excerpts of which are presented on this CD. And one of the most outstanding conductors of Tchaikovsky's ballets is Andre Previn. My first recommendation would be to get complete performances of all three of Tchaikovsky's ballets. However, those who wish to sample the highlights of these masterpieces can do no better than this outstanding -- and bargain priced -- CD. This is some of the greatest music ever written by anyone, beautifully performed by a master of the genre.

Great music/stories as well as sound quality.......2004-02-11

The stories on CD are well written and very entertaining. I listened through all 3 CDs in one sitting when I got them! What's more, its sound quality is very good. I have other classical music CDs for kids and almost always I'm disappointed with the sound quality. (Violines sound like they have flu!)

This is a great buy for kids of all ages!!!

Fabulous for Kids.......2002-01-01

My two children, ages 7 and 5 received the Classical Kids Music Box, volumes 1 & 2 for Christmas this year and they can't seem to get enough of it! Each box contains 3 CD's, each on a different composer. Some are narrated by children and tell a story of the particular composer. Their popular compositions play in the background - this way the listener hears a partial biography of the composer as well as some music. Volume 1 contains stories of Handel, Beethoven and Vivaldi, and Volume 2 contains stories of Mozart, Bach and Tchaikovsky. I highly recommend this for all children who listed to music CD's, whether they're musically inclined or not.

Music Box Series.......2001-04-23

To say this series of music is "CAPTIVATING" is a total understatement. We have enjoyed these immensely for 2 years now and are hoping they will continue to release more composers. These well-told stories will hold the interest of everyone at any age while introducing them to these brilliant composers. My son is a 12 year old AAA travel hockey player and listens to these CD's while going to sleep, every night, without fail! Last week he asked if he could go online to find music and I thought he was looking for something along the line of latest hits. What a surprise to find him looking for more of the Music Box Series. These collections are as valuable to classical music as Harry Potter has become to children's reading! The story of Beethoven is especially poignant, when you realize what he accomplished with his gift in spite of his many challenges. I won't give away the plots of these wonderful stories told in this series, however I will say they will be listened to over and over again! And just like Harry Potter, you can't wait for the next one!

somewhat disappointing.......2007-01-31

I have another one of Rosie Ledet's cds--It's a Groove Thing!--which I liked enough to order another. Sweet Brown Sugar was definitely not as good. While lyrics are not Rosie's strong point, they were even weaker on this cd, very basic and redundant. Someone get this woman a thesaurus! I'd recommend It's a Groove Thing over Sweet Brown Sugar any day!

A very nice SACD.......2004-06-09

This is a very enjoyable album. The sound quality is absolutely amazing! The first time I heard the clarinet solo on track #2, my jaw dropped at the amazing sound quality.

The soloists on the album include John Pizzareli, and the Manhattan Transfer. They are great musicians that bring a bit of variety to this album.

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra here offer a veritable tour of the swing era. Kunzel has been conducting the orchestra since its formation in 1977. The set includes many of swing's cornerstone numbers, of course including Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which is also celebrated as the source of the genre's name. The music flourished in the '30s and '40s, popularized by composers and bandleaders such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and the Dorsey brothers. To help realize this project, a number of vocalists were enlisted, all of whom have current resumes rich with forays into the swing era: the Manhattan Transfer, John Pizzarelli, and Janis Siegel (who's also a member of the aforementioned vocal quartet). From soaring group vocals on such numbers as "Skyliner" to straight-ahead instrumental grooves as on Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home," this 14-song set celebrates the swing era by making it sound fresh today. --David Greenberger

Disappointing Vocals.......2003-08-21

The orchestral approach to swing used on this recording unfortunately makes this date sound anemic. The swing band sound that is in integral part of this song list is either missing or meagerly represented among the orchestral arrangements and the hollow sounding concert hall acoustics. Worst of all, the Manhattan Transfer are mixed down so far that they almost sound like they don't get their own mikes. For anyone who loves MT as much as I do, this recording is a sadly wasted opportunity. Very disappointing. They deserve so much better.
