Customer Reviews:
The smooth sounds of Cafe d'Afrique.......2007-07-24
If youre looking for a very relaxing, mellow and laid back sound Cafe d'Afrique is just the thing for you. The house style drum beat that is featured on a majority of the tracks keeps the entire album exciting, fresh and upbeat, while the melodic vocal melodies and synthy chords keep the feel of the album mellow and sophisticated. Its definite lounge material and would be a great addition to anyones party playlist. Its sound is very trendy and would serve as great background music for any social occasion. It is definitely a great representation of the New York City SOHO nightlife scene, while remaining accessible to the average listening situation as well. I highly recommend it.

The irresistible combination of smoky bossa nova textures and velvety electronic beats has already been successfully mined by Brazilian divas such as Bebel Gilberto and Cibelle. But in the hands of Italian DJ Nicola Conte, the electro-bossa recipe continues to surprise with its wide-eyed innocence, lounge undertones and instantly hummable melodies. Conte has an ear for the melancholy feeling of pop culture nostalgia associated with the 1960s-- the Antonio Carlos Jobim records, the Michel Legrand soundtracks, the Stan Getz sessions. De Souza's sweet vocals and tender delivery are ideal for the task of resurrecting venerable samba nuggets such as Baden Powell's and Vinicius de Moraes' exuberant "Canto De Ossanha" and Caetano Veloso's wistful "Saudosismo." Equally intriguing are the handful of original tunes by Conte and De Souza--a seamless recreation of the summery vibe and enviable lightness of touch that lies at the essence of the bossa aesthetic. --Ernesto Lechner

Nicola Conte Apresenta..........2007-05-19
I first heard Rosalia de Souza on one of the Erotic Lounge compilations, so I decided to buy both this cd and "Brasil Precisa Balançar", her second release. I really enjoyed every track on this cd, the combination of Rosalia's voice with Nicola's production really makes for an impressive release. This truely is a great cd, buy it , you wont regret it.
Great album!! I love you Rosalia!.......2006-02-03
I never know what kind of reaction I'll have when listening to an album. Most of the time, I expect that the album will suck. (Yes, I am that pessimistic.) Anyway, around the time I picked up Rosalia's album, I had just finished Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" at the time. I was disappointed with that album, so I wasn't really sure that I would dig Rosalia's album when I learned that Conte was behind the project.
I was wrong. This album is fantastic. Rosalia's voice is sweet, charming, quirky, and lady-like. "Maira Moita," is one of my favorite songs off the album. Rosalia's a wonderful performer. And, I have to give kudos to Nicola Conte for the stellar arrangements on this album. He also brought new life to the Powell classic "Canto De Ossanha" and Veloso's "Saudosismo."
On a side note - I've heard three versions of "Canto De Ossanha" performed recently by three modern albums - Daude (who does a great catchy reinterpretation r&b/pop version of the song) and Paula Morelenbaum (whose album I adore - but fails at her interpretation because it sounds cartoonish) and Rosalia's whose version is closest to original version. Her interpretation is classic, beautiful, and wonderful.
I adore Rosalia, who is definitely among the top of the modern day Brazilian divas! I highly recommend this album.

The multi-national Crammed Discs-Ziriguiboom-Six Degrees triumvirate is the force behind several tropical world salads, wherein classic and cutting-edge styles are shredded, tossed, re-imagined and transformed. Zuco 103 have released two previous exercises in frothy, mind-bending musical shape shifting. The Dutch-based trio consists of Lilian Vieira, a Brazilian-born chanteuse and co-composers Stefan Schmid (drums) and Stefan Kruger (aka Stuv, on keyboards), plus a tight back-up band that includes a sultry saxophone and a shimmering West African kora. The group's sonic language applies trip-hop, light jazz, electronica, subtle drum 'n' bass and other urban sounds to rich gleanings from the lead singer's ancestral samba, afoxé, bossa nova and forró, along with grooves from the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle-East. Vieira swerves between sophisticated, hallucinatory evocations of Billie Holiday and Elis Regina (the Judy Garland of Brazil), torrid belting and offhand, conversational raps with all the risqué flair of a born scene-stealer. The mix is further enhanced by the presence of two legendary figures--Roberto Menescal, an arranger-singer whose career began in Rio during the sixties--and the brilliant, wildly idiosyncratic Jamaican producer, songwriter and vocalist, Lee "Scratch" Perry. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Incredible CD! Very soulful, funky, eclectic, ect. Nice find........2006-12-14
Even though I don't speak the language, this CD is hot. I come from an old school, East Coast Hip Hop backround with intrests in Renaissance Jazz, Old school MTV 80's rock, NY House music, Acid Jazz, ect, but I've just always liked Soul in my music. This CD has a nice mix of all of the above. If you like producers like Vikter Duplaix, house music, Regge, Afro Cuban & Latin Jazz, ect, you'll like this CD.
I Am Not Hip Enough for this..........2005-09-20
...but I love it anyway. Outrageously cool Brazilian pop lead by the sexy vocals of Lilian Vieira. Programming rules the day with lots of dance beats, bits of reggae & rap, more than a hint of funk. Big energy, great guest artists and fun-fun-fun for days. If this doesn't get you moving, check your pulse to make sure you're still breathing.
The best album so far from this Euro-Brazilian dance band.......2005-09-07
I had mixed feelings about the last two albums by the Dutch-Brazilian electro-dance ensemble, but this record really got my toes tapping. On the giddy, exhiliarating opening track, "Na Magueira," singer Lilian Vieira bursts forth with an incandescent homage to the sprightly jazzy rhythm style of '60s samba-soul diva Elza Soares -- Vieira's version being draped in a contemporary techno-tinged sound mix... The band's roots in Europhilic dance music come back to the fore in a few of the house-ier tracks, but their explorations of African pop (on "Duele Le Le") and cameos by dub reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry make this disc their richest, most resonant album to date. Nice stuff; catchy and clever, and playful as well. Recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Impeccable........2007-03-10
Newcomers to Nicola Conte should think of the following concepts - high style, serious talent and retro chic...
People who remember Conte's "Jet Sounds" will understand why he could count on Thievery Corporation as fans. They subsequently signed him to their ESL imprint in the US.
However, this record is different, it moves on from the chilled electronic bossa tinged music of "Bossa Per Due" and "Arabesque" into a territory defined as jazz.
This is pure jazz, no samples and electronic trickery, just Nicola at the centre of the band calling the shots, deciding on a 1950's and 1960's direction. As a result it has found its rightful home with the most famous jazz record label of all time, Blue Note.
Inspired by 60's Blue Note, this album takes you on a musical journey through Hard Bop, Modal and Latin Jazz.
The Koop-like vocal 'Kind Of Sunshine' is probably the stand-out, but check the tough 'Impulso', the driving 'Nefertiti', and the wonderful 'Aphrodite's Dream', plus the tight 'The Dharma Bums'.
Brilliant........2007-03-06
This is an interesting album which works on a number of levels.
It is an effective atmospheric latin-tinged accompaniment to a dinner party which will not provoke complaints from non-jazz fans.
If more concentrated listening is your thing it contains enough quality jazz musicianship to satisfy post-bop jazz enthusiasts.
It will also appeal to younger listeners more accustomed to DJ manufactured jazz grooves and it is nice to drive to.
I enjoy most types of jazz but prefer music that challenges me a bit. I tend to get bored quickly with stuff that lacks depth.
I am still finding new things to enjoy in this album after many months of listening. One or two tracks are on a less engaging and ingenious side but overall it is worth shelling out the cash for.
I can understand why some reviewers have given it a low rating because it is more rooted in jazz traditions than his previous offerings.
So, if your not a jazz fan and are not prepared to listen to music at more than a superficial level, please don't go here.
Recommended to all others though.
Nothing new under the sun.......2005-04-22
Despite being a Nicola Conte's fan I think that his new album for Blue Note is a pretentious attempt to switch from the fresh sound of the previous albums to a boring excercise of re-reading the glorious sound of the jazz of the fifties and sixties. It doesn't sound new and fresh at all (apart from Kind of sunshine very much in the St.Germain style).
What saves this album is the quality of the musicians that took part to it and the fact that the tracks that originally inspired Nicola Conte's ones are so good that any copy can't be that bad. But next time I expect a change of direction...again.
what is happening to Blue Note.......2005-02-23
I'm a real fan of the label Blue Note but since Norah Jones big success , it looks like the label signs about any rubbish. After St Germain and Marc Moulin , this is another electro-king that wants to be seen as a jazz musician .Pathetic!
Beautiful Italian neo-jazz!.......2005-02-21
WoW! I have listened to Nicola Conte's talent for over 2 years now, and his first albums get a high workout in my collection of over 500 CDs. This new CD had me worried there for a minute because I thought that Nicola has escaped into some new weird musical underground with this retro-sounding album, but upon intent listening I am not worried any more! The album has some stand-out tracks but my favorite is the title track (number 11). Words fail me in describing the beautiful sound of this and his other records. I am a dedicated fan for life! Five stars from me!

The Acme, the Pinnacle, the Zenith, the Ultimate .......2007-07-04
I first heard Flower Travellin' Band on Hawaiian underground radio in the early 70's and captured Satori on reel-to-reel. It took about five more years before I found it on vinyl LP in a Japanese department store in Honolulu. Then a space of about 30 years before I again found it on CD. Each time was sonic Nirvana. This is a superb recording, one of a kind, I'd say. Don't think twice, just order it immediately! You will not be disappointed. When you play it for your like-minded friends, I know they will want a copy (but be fair to FTB, tell them to buy one from Amazon like you did).
Amazing piece of Japan Heavy Pshych.......2006-11-10
When everybody in the west were dazed by the sounds of Black Sabbath, Depp Purple, Uriah Heep and so, in the east they were capable of rebuild this sounds and going further
A serie of bands heading by The Flower Travelling band were mixing japanese culture, psichedelia and heavy rock with a layer of mistery, angst and poetry...
This record has been a cult piece for many years, is the second of this band, they began covering their heroes in a first recording and on this everything learned is reflected.
Satori is structured in suites, above all i would sugest for first bite Satori 2nd, a song which would be the best thriller soundtrack, wich reflects how japan understood Black Sabbath. In sons as third suite japanese culture and music is very present, not making the songs boring but giving them a psichedelic style very original and enjoyable.
Now is reissued with original artwork and sleevenotes for every hard rocker delight
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-09-17
Order it immediately and count down the days until your mind will be blown. It's like Can and Black Sabbath made love and gave birth to Godzilla and instead of trashing Tokyo he just smoked out and ROCKED. Heavier than a thousand planets, tripper than if the end of of 2001 was really happening to you right now, and you really were a giant immortal baby hovering in space, and if that were true then forget Strauss, these guys would be the house band. Don't let next Thursday be another day that you've lived without hearing this.

The best French Rap CD ever recorded.......2005-06-05
This is probably the best french rap disc ever recorded. The disc originally came out in 1994 which was probably one of the peak years for worldwide rap prodiction in terms of quality. This is the best album MC Solaar has ever recorded. If you like Dubmatique, French Affair, or numerous other groups in the past and present Quebec mainstream, you will love this one. Obsolete and Relations Humaines are especially good. This is one of the few CD's I've ever purchased in which every song on the disc is quality. I would recommend it to anyone. Even if you are not fluent in French you will be enhanced by the rythms.

disregard the 1 star ratings as they are probably 1 star folk. heard this superb album the first time back in the good ole days of 1994 and still love it. all tracks good, some tracks are great. i still wonder why such talent can't make a spot on the charts here.

Lovers Rock
~ Sade
Here is your review the way it will appear:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
= The Greatest Sex Music Ever
Reviewer: bilbo from Seattle WA
Here is what I did: I took "Lover's Rock" and "Diamond Life" and "The Best of Sade" and "Seal" and a French Rap CD called "Prose Combat" by MC Solaar, put them all in my 5-CD changer and put it on automatic shuffle. I had this girl over for dinner who I met in a department store when I was downtown shopping. I got some oysters from the fish store, sliced 'em open on the half-shell, cracked open a bottle of Asti Spumante (that's Italian Champagne) and dimmed the lights. This whole scenario was straight out of this book I read called "9 Free Secrets of New Sensual Power" which is basically some kind of sex-memoir/instruction book for higher consciousness, that is DOPE! So she comes over and I light some candles, we start dancing to all that Sade music and that killer-sexy French rap (that the guy in the book also turned me onto,) and one thing just naturally led to another, just like it said he would -- and that's basically all I can say in this "family" environment, except that I WORSHIP Sade! She is God's gift to guys who want to get l--d!
Just learning the language, but loving the music.......2002-09-29
I am in my fourth year of French in High School, and my teacher started playing some french rap because he knew it would be interesting to us if it was rap and had a good beat... he was right, I fell in love with Solaar's music right away. Not only does it help me to learn the language more fluently, but I truly enjoy listening to it. I'm begging my mom to buy me all of his CD's :)

Customer Reviews:
Great album.......2007-07-18
The sound from this CD is more of a 'traditional jazz' feel rather than the usual bosa nova stuff that is coming out of Brazil these days, more upbeat and played at a slightly quicker pace. I get an almost Diana Krall meets (early) George Benson feel to this (cant be a bad thing) Still maintains that silky Brazilian sound thought.
Simply the best.......2007-04-24
I actually don't know what the guy below meant when he says less sophisticated, yes it's very diferent from garota moderna and i accept i was a little dissapointed when i first listen to it cause i was expecting something more electronic like her first album but once i started to listen carefully i swear, i realized this is probably better than garota moderna, and that's a lot since i considered that one the best modern brazilian music CD, but Brasil precisa balancear is so elegant and exquisite, it can goes from a very slow rythm to a very fast samba in in the same song, melodies are always beautiful, as usual, and if this isn't better than garota moderna it deserves five stars in my opinion anyway!
different from garota moderna.......2007-01-04
Les sophisticated than garota moderna but more organic than this. Well produced and arranged (thanks to roberto menescal)and including a handfull of singles.
Class and Jazz on Rosalia's Second.......2006-03-01
I got into Rosalia De Souza's voice without really knowing it - when I was listening to Les Hommes and Quintetto X; both artists on Schema's label along with Rosalia. But I really got hooked after she featured on Break & Bossa vol 5, where she opened up a continuous bossa mix with back to back tracks - the classic Canta De Ossanha and then the unique track "Zig-Zag" (it's on her album but without lyrics). Some months afterwards, her debut album was released and it was stunning. Now in 2006, Rosalia's back with her second album. But this time she has the help and production work of the terrifically talented Roberto Menescal instead of the very impressive Nicola Conte.
This is a very good album, although I must warn from the start that the vibe is FAR different from "Garota Moderna". This was recorded in Rio De Janeiro and again, with the expertise of Roberto Menescal. It has a completely different ambiance. From the first song on, I was actually reminded a bit of her work with Quintetto X but with a bit of a 'spark' to it. "Onde Anda O Meu Amor", a classic Orlandivo cut was a pretty classy intro, very smooth. Voz da Lapa is another nice track highlighting Rosalia's voice but with the help from labelmate Toco on vocals. "Que Bandeira" (that flag) features Marcos Valle in a guest role, hmm... nice but not the highlight of the album to me. "Ao Amigo Tom" is a nice tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim (Tom), nicely laid over a play of one of his classic ballads to close. Other standouts on this to me were "Agarradinho"... what a song. "Nem Que Seja a Nado" was also nice, "Rio De Janeiro" had that sweet Carioca feel to it, "Vivo Sonhando" is a Jobim track that Rosalia does a fantastic job of covering and the album closes wonderfully with "O Que e Amar"... beautiful song with great a romantic guitar.
I certainly recommend this. The album was well put together, is rather deep and sung with care and the musicianship is simple... yet not so simple. To be honest this reminded me quite a bit of Joyce's more recent works on Far Out records but... recorded in Rio. The album is certainly a tribute to Brasil, Bossa Nova and Samba and Toco, Roberto Menescal and of course Rosalia De Souza were outstanding and put togehtre some beautiful songs. I listened to this from beginning to end, but must again warn that if you're looking for a more bossa album or a sound like in "Garota Moderna", you'll be disappointed. If you do like this, definitely check out Joyce's "A Little Bit Crazy" and you'll probably like work by Maria Rita, Rosa Passos and Luciana Souza.
As far as format - I'm unsure if it will have a domestic (USA) release. But it will have a Schema release (this one), which means it'll be available without the two *bonus* tracks on the import from Japan. There will also be an LP version of this however it will not have "Agarradinho" or "O Que e Amar". Also please note that if you do get the Japan import version instead of the Schema import, the linear notes and information is in kanji.

Formidable.....my single favorite rap album of all time........2003-07-18
This dude has the gift. His lyrics are outstanding. Anyone who's heard him knows it. I learned as much french from this guy as I did from 6 years of class. Even if you're not into French the cadence is undeniably entertaining. And his dj is awsome too. All the tracks are cool. The best on this cd include Quartier Nord, l' Historie d' Art and Bouge de la of course. Take my recomendation for what its worth, but this guy was ahead of his time. If he rapped in English, forget it, he be up there in popularity with anyone.......Anyone.
A Real Treat: Not quite like any other rap you've ever heard.......2001-08-13
THIS DISC IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE PREMIUM IMPORT PRICE! It's definitely my favorite MC Solaar disc & one of my best rap CDs, period. It doesn't matter if you don't speak a word of French (I remember a little from 2 semesters in high-school), the sounds and rythm are so intricate and energetic that they more than make up for the jokes and whatever meaning you fail to pick up from the cognates, tone, and musical context.
Also, consider picking up Planet Rap, before it goes out of print. And Tour De La Question is a good 2-disc (live) sampling of many of Solaar's hits. I find his other later releases less compelling than this one.
BTW, if it helps, I should note that I find this disc somewhat reminiscent of good 80's rap.
Buy this CD, if you've made it this far! You won't regret it.......2001-05-31
Claude MC has an amazing gift. His ability to use language, sound, rythym & music to convey a message, at times one that is socially or politically charged, is exceptional. Somehow, in the midst of a song such as "l'Histoire de l'Art," which really flows, the idea that rappers have been discrimated against by certain elements of society who fail to see rap as an art form is introduced. Solaar, using humor, wit, an outstanding intellect and his sheer charisma, easily and non-confrontationally makes the point that the history of art is not complete until it includes the works of ALL artists. Bien Fait, Claude MC, Bravo!
The background tracks are for the most part smooth. A bit of a jazz & blues feel to them (perhaps its the saxophone) mixed with more elements familiar to modern hip hop and rap. This juxtaposition is transfixing.
Although I myself am a French speaker, I find that you do not need to know the language to enjoy Solaar's music. Fluency in the French language, however, does allow you to appreciate his music that much more as you can fully experience the joy of this gifted musician from Senegal's play with language. His lyrics are so full of such wit and irony!
Somehow I can't seem to take this CD out of my car stereo. I guess that its just so good that I want to listen to this CD at every chance I get (and its been over a year since I purchased it!)
I would highly recommend MC Solaar's Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo to anyone even thinking of buying it. If you've made it to this page, put it in your shopping cart. I promise that you will have no regrets.

I've had this album for about a month now, having heard "qui sème le vent" and my favourite song keeps changing. Initially it was "Victime de la mode" with the bit "Dominique, écoutes bien ce funky beat" and the message of the story. Then it was Bouge de la (part 1)
and now, tonight, it's "Caroline" This song is beautiful, heartfelt, sweet, elegant, etc etc. I'm sure tomorrow it will be another song that will capture my ear. I find myself singing/thinking about the phrases from other songs consistently- there are a lot of great little bits of philosophy. "J'ai dû disparaître, pour réapparaître"

Amazon.com essential recording
Revisited Classics captures three young DJs from Rio reassembling Brazilian classics with modern hip-hop rhythms and DJ sampling for an effective melding of the sensual past with the in-your-face present. What's refreshing about this album is the three mixmasters' expertise in highlighting the luscious jazzy essence of the bossa nova while bringing in DJ dance attitude without impairing either genre. Take Wanda Sâ's "Meditaçâo": distorted guitar à la Black Sabbath engraves the melodies, but the clips are restrained enough to allow the soft, tinkling piano lines to work their luminous, exotic magic. Similarly, the fat beats on "Influencia do Jazz" bring a sumptuous groove to Carlos Lyra's airy, high voice, recalling US 3 without the pretense. The respect these artists have for their bossa nova elders is apparent--the jacket's littered with 1960s photos of bossa nova artists and a couple of original versions relax at album's end, right about the time you realize this new Brazilian generation knows how to pay an extraordinarily tasteful tribute to the past while reinventing the present. --Karen Karleski
Customer Reviews:
bacana!.......2006-08-11
Danceable, fun, creative -- if you're not in a good mood when you start listening to this, you will be by the end of the album. Contagious beat & full of joy for life.
Great Re-hash of the orginals........2005-06-12
BossaCucaNova is a great new DJ sound obviously aimed at the new generations of Brazilian music fans who are yerning for more than "just" the gold era "MPB" classics they grew up on. This album symbolizes that fusion of DJ sounds and personal new takes on old classics. The only downside to this album is that purists will cringe at it and new listeners who haven't heard the orginals may in some cases lose something in the lack of musical translation. But after all, I think I have 3 favorite MPB takes of Berimbau, and I welcome a this new twist! Another good exmple of this would be "A twist of Jobim" albeit a different sound than this, but it's easily considered a great album.
Excellent Nu World Bossa Nova..........2004-06-09
I love how these three DJs modernize Bossa Nova by adding new beats... My favorite track is "Maria Moita" and I love the vocals on mostly all tracks... I definitely recommend any nu world dj pick this cd up... It's guaranteed to be a hit - Savannah Skye...
Kind of misses the point..........2003-01-09
I can't say I cared much for this album, though I have friends who think it's the bee's knees. Basically, this is a set of gentle bossa nova oldies (the original versions) with loud "funky drummer" snare drum tracks crudely laid down on top of them. Since the whole point of bossa nova was its gorgeous subtlety --especially in the rhythm -- these "remixes" seem rather self-defeating. To the credit of the producers, several tracks are lesser-known compositions, so they get points for going off the beaten track. Anyway, as I mentioned, I know folks who liked this record, so although I think this is all horribly, horribly wrong, I'm sure other folks will have a much different response.
A Surprisingly Great CD!.......2002-12-22
This is really my Dad's CD, but I burned a copy of it for myself. I'm 16, but I really enjoy this CD (call me crazy!) We first heard it when my Godmother played it on one of our annual sojourns to the magnificent Bass Lake. It's a really fun collection of jazzy hits. This is a really good CD! I love it! Even though I can't understand any of the words, I still love it. My favorite song is Track 2, "Vai De Vez". This CD was really hard for us to track down, because we kept seeing CD's that we thought were this, but turned out not to be. This is a must-have for any CD collection. It's awesome, even for the younger generation, like mine. Enjoy!!!

Cool.......2007-01-06
I like St. Germain. When I first listened to this album, I thought it wasn't as good as Tourist. The sound is different in both albums, and I think this one may feel as good as the former one depending on your mood...
This is NOT Tourist 2!.......2002-04-22
If you're like me and thinking about buying this album looking for more of what you liked from Tourist, don't -- you will likely be disappointed (like I was). Definitely not as funky nor as memorable. Fine for having on in the background, but I doubt it's worth the asking price just for that. Giving it a 3 mostly because I still have warm feelings about St. Germain based on Tourist -- if you don't have that, get it!
very cool disc.......2002-02-07
Its got a mellow feel, but can definetily work a party early on in the evening. Its got a jazzy feel to it, but is very modern with the electronica element too.
Wow.......2001-12-01
I bought "Tourist" some months ago, and really liked it. I think that "Boulevard" beats it x2.
It's one of those albums that you put on, close your eyes and just drift away into. If that makes any sense.
And if you listen to the album, I think that it will.
Laid-Back Auditory Landscape.......2001-08-04
I've been looking for hip background music for work. This creates an incredible vibe that doesn't become TOO much. Mellow beats, Cool jazz samples, modern and mature. Every client that has listened to this has commented on the unique mood this can create.
