Although H.N.I.C. is billed as Prodigy's solo debut, it's liberally peppered with guest appearances. Mobb Deep's infamous one chose, with the exception of Cash Money Millionaire B.G., to rely on folks of Queens pedigree. His borough loyalty gives H.N.I.C. a polished yet organic-sounding edge on today's crop of industry-endorsed thugs. The bulk of H.N.I.C's subject matter scores few points for originality, but no one speaks to corner-hustling shorty rocks as clearly as P. Standout tracks in the Mobbphonic vein include "Infamous Minded." Featuring Big Noyd, the song references BDP's "Criminal Minded" and is pushed over the top by a badass reggae-tinged beat. Havoc contributes both lyrical and rhythmic support; his beat on "Wanna Be Thugs" proves why he's the production don of Queensbridge. Getting past the gun talk and guest appearances, "You Never Feel My Pain," which unflinchingly details P's battle with sickle cell anemia, is a hardcore analysis of the artist's frame of reference for daily living. That alone is worth the price of admission. --Rebecca Levine END
Customer Reviews:
Pee slams GAY Z .......2007-02-04
H.N.I.C. is Prodigy of Mobb Deeps solo LP, he delivers hard hitting tracks....nothing less. His reply back to Jay Z's diss "Keep it thoro" is a track to bang all day, HOV has nothing on the MOBB. Another powerful track is "never feel my pain" where Pee talks about his Sickle Cell Anemia disease, and gives you a deep visual of what he went through growing up. For all the MOBB fans out there, you MUST have this in your collection.....or you're not a MOBB fan.
"Heavy air play all day with no chorus, I keep it thoro nigga" - Prodigy of Mobb Deep
A sign of the times (2 and 1/2 stars).......2007-01-29
Prodigy was always nice but on this solo album you would hear a side of P that shows that he can make a suspect album just like the rest of them. His flow got sloppy and he got outrapped by Noriega on his own s***(What U Rep). To add insult to injury he gets outstaged by B.G.(no offence to B.G. but come on now!) on Y.B.E. Even Cormega(this one is understandable) floors him on Three. The guest spots with Havoc are nothing to brag about either and the way that Prodigy fumbled in that freestyle with his friend turned archenemy Littles(Littles verse was nice though) is a damn shame! Keep It Thoro, Rock Dat S***, You Can Never Feel My Pain and Genesis show us the Prodigy that we are all fond of. Gunplay and Infamous Minded are good tracks even though P's verses were alright on them. Filler: Diamond(I love the beat but the song is wack), Delt With The Bulls***(beatwasters anonymous material here), Do It(wasted a good beat provided by Rockwilder with subpar rapping. Prodigy, have you no shame?), Trails Of Love(SNORE! Ms Barz should quit), Cant Complain(Infamous Mobb verses were okay but P, forgetaboutit!) etc. Bottom Line: This is the worst solo Prodigy put out. Infamy smokes this album by a longshot. The production was not the problem, its Prodigy's rhymes. He changed his whole style around and now its sad to hear him getting floored by Noriega, B.G., Infamous Mobb and Cormega. If Prodigy wants to remain relevant in the rap game then he needs to change his style back to The Infamous and Hell On Earth days because the way he is flowing now is pathetic.
QB state of mind.......2006-10-02
Before there was Hollywood P, there was Prodigy aka the H.N.I.C, aka the most rugged, vicious and nihilistic voice coming out of Queensbridge.
As the most lyrical half of the infamous mobb deep, P always revolved around that sacred gangsta trinity of gunz, drugs and sex, and if anything, with this solo album, P endulges in that gangsta sound, evolving from thug to superthug, with more hood tales of everyday hustle, getting bent and pushing weight.
The surprise is the actually decent production, and though Havoc is missing, that minimal, sample-driven QB sound is present on most tracks.
U gotta love P's young black and don't give a f*** mantra, but even the most hardcore Mobb fan will feel the lack of variation. Fortunatly P was smart enough to bring heavy collabos, most of them from QB, and they do supply with a much needed diversity.
22 tracks of gangsta gangsta with above average production, some highlights ( "Genesis", "Trials of Love", "H.N.I.C", "Gun Play" ), and overall a good effort.
Prodigy's debut proved he was the "Head N***a In Charge" [4 stars].......2006-05-23
Prodigy, one half of the group of Mobb Deep, came out with his debut in mid-late 2000 called H.N.I.C. When I first heard this album was the first time I heard Mobb Deep, and fell in love with it right away.
Just about all the cuts are mostly uptown grimy normal Queensbrigde cuts. Some are dark as heard on the second track called "Genesis" and on the track "Three" which features Cormega, where Prodigy enforces the quote "Queensbridge heads don't play..."
P's lyrical content is also swell behind the mic. On the lead single "Keep It Thoro" where he says "I throw a TV at you crazy/ b*****s say 'P you crazy'/ a pain in the a**, nah but f*** you, pay me..." Or on the story about cops accusing them of a murder on the next track "Can't Complain" which features Twin Gambino of The Infamous Mobb. "Infamous Minded" if you haven't noticed, is that it borrows BDP's song "Criminal Minded", a track that features Big Noyd and Havoc doing the ad-libs. Speaking of Hav, the other half of Mobb Deep, he makes two more appearances on the songs "Wanna Be Thugs" and "Delt With The Bulls**t". One of the best tracks is "Y.B.E." (was that another single?) which features former Cash Money/Hot Boy's member B.G. The second to last track on the album "You Could Never Feel My Pain" Prodigy talks about his genetic disease Sicle Cell and what he has been going through with the problems.
There are some tracks I didn't like that much. "Rock Dat Sh**" which uses elements from the Mobb Deep hit back in 1999 "Quiet Storm (remix)" to make the hook. The track "Diamond" sounds okay which features local QB group Bars & Hooks.
Overall Prodigy proves to Mobb Deep fans that he can carry a solo album while his friends from QB come and make a few appearances (Havoc, Noreaga, Noyd, Cormega, and others). Like I said, this was the frist Mobb Deep album that I purchaced and enjoyed mosy of it from beginning to end. Recommended to Mobb Deep fans or people who like what classics have came from QB in the past.

Seductive Sensual Music .......2005-04-23
This CD contains seductive ambient music, created by the rhythmic beat of either a pony drum, congas, talking drum or tom toms, which captures the conscious and unconscious mind weaving a spell of contentment and deep primal awareness in the listener. Additional instruments in each track add subliminal satisfaction to capture the listener's every emotion and transform the energy into deep wells of universal potential.
"Elusinian Blue" composed by Jai Uttal starts with an ancient primival tom tom beat which then has the ethereal Indian sitar-like or santur plucked instrument added ... creating a mysterious Asian aura to which male vocals add a distant powerful instinctual magnetic appeal. "Labyrinth" is a soothing combination of balaphone (an African hammered dulcimer-like instrument), pony drum, and occasional harp ... where the melody meanders into a delightful path of extraordinairily natural pleasure. The music flows like a babbling brook. It delights the senses like watching a natural waterfall ... All of the music on this CD creates a milieu of primival energy and sound that is highly seductive and hypnotic. The magnificent array of instruments combine to create a connection to nature's source of energy. The listener remains surrounded by a sense of contentment long after the CD finishes playing.

The sacred drums of trance.......2003-03-09
_Luna_ is an album of music by a small instrumental troupe. Drums are the most prominent instruments; there are also winds, a bit of bass, an occasional human voice, and some synthesizer. When I first heard the album, I felt the tracks were too repetitive. But upon further listening, I realized _Luna_'s repetitive rhythms had their own charm. This is a CD to listen to as you meditate or do some sort of ritual. It makes me want to dance, and to get out my own drums and play along. It also makes good background music when I want something pleasant and ambient that won't distract me the way music with lyrics can.
My favorite tracks are "Persephone's Song" (pretty and lyrical with lots of winds), "Seducing Hades" (very strong sexy beat, bass guitar, and human voices making moaning sorts of sounds toward the end of the song), and "Labyrinth" (trancelike, with a marimba part that evokes the unrolling of Ariadne's famous thread). "Luna" is the only song I'm not particularly fond of, and that's just because the bouncy synthesizer noise repeated several times is the exact same noise my old Nintendo made whenever Mario jumped. A little distracting.
If you love drums..........2002-07-31
I ran into this CD on accident through a friend, and immediately fell in love with it! The drums are awesome, peaceful and full of power. The entire cd is good to listen to for meditation or long drives, although some tracks are a little bit cheesy. I look forward to buying Gabrielle Roth's other works soon. As you can see, they are all on my wish list. :)
This is my favorite!.......2001-09-18
There are some CDs about the Moon, but this is the one that manifests her. Nice to celebrate Nights.
Voodoo Ambience.......1998-05-19
Very organic, whooshing, whirling sounds never quite touch the quiet swamp rhythms. This music is a dance.

Deep Concentration reinforces what you fundamentally love about hip-hop and then proceeds to flip your brain into hyperspace with some of the more progressive DJ compositions from some of the most respected turntablists around. West Coast DJ Cut Chemist (of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli) reaches extra deep into the archives to build "Lesson 6," while DJs Swingsett and Wally find a hook in a loop of dripping water for the trippy "Centaurius Space Bass." Hip-hop purists will appreciate the X-Ecutioners' assault "A Turntable Experience" and the only MC cut, "Say What," by the lyrical marvels Latyrx. Some of the routines on Deep Concentration are sonically experimental while others, such as Prince Paul's ego trip, "DJ Prince Paul vs. the World," simply excel with excess. --Todd Levin
Customer Reviews:
A Classic............2004-06-14
Although a classic of which music genre is anyone's guess. Trip hop prehaps? There so much depth to this album it boggles the mind. I purchased this album over seven years ago when I was just starting to get into DJ Shadow. If you are a fan of Shadow you need this album. This is also what I would call a "bridge" album because the artists on it are tied to so many different music scenes....I guess that's mostly because of Cut Chemist. This is a definate "must" for anyone that enjoys turntable artistry.
Absolute Masterpiece.......1999-06-11
You get a bit of every style in this package. The skillz amaze, but your butt still moves.
The content alternates where the A sides (2LP in my case), are butt shakin' turntablist rave-ups and the B's are more ambient, jazzy, smoove stuff.

San Francisco has become ground zero for turntablists, and Om Records has put itself at the epicenter. The third installment of the label's highly regarded Deep Concentration compilation series does not rest on its laurels--it introduces many new names that may not be familiar even to those moderately well-versed in the scene. Not all the contributors are from S.F.--the opening track, from the East Coast's Ming & FS (one of Om's flagship groups), mixes a strong drum & bass flavor into the hip-hop. Many of the performers (Radar, Plagaiwrists, Danny Breaks), specialize in the surgically precise, astonishingly fast cutting and scratching that is turntablism's predominant feature, but others are hip-hoppers who prefer to create their musical backdrops with turntables instead of synthesizers. L.A.'s People Under the Stairs put the vocals first, and Blak Forest (also from L.A.) are one of the real discoveries of the compilation--anyone into any contemporary underground hip-hop (Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Anti-Pop Consortium, Blackalicious, etc.) will want to check them out. Atlanta's T-Rock and Faust combine speedy scratching with mid-'80s electro beats and a nasal vocal delivery reminiscent of Rob Base, and the Highlanders close things out with a snotty, hyperspeed, synth-squelchy track that should appeal to fans of Atari Teenage Riot and similar bands. Overall it's a very listenable compilation that illustrates just how many directions hip-hop based music has taken. --Bob Bannister

Retains the Brilliance of Deep Concentration Volumes 1 & 2.......2004-08-06
Vol 3 in the esteemed 'Deep Concentration' series, which focuses less on the vocal talents of emcees, and concentrates on the DJ side of things, and more specifically Experimental Turntable trickery, Genre Fusion, or indeed just exceptional feats of turntable skill and cutting-edge beats. So genres outside the hip-Hop area are all skillfully intergrated here. whether its the stunning breakbeat-inspired epic of "Ming & Fs's - The Human condition" which remained one of the standouts on their studio album, and retains that accolade here, or indeed "People under the Stairs" who throw down with some confidently handled golden age referencing turntable trickery.
The emphasis on this album certainly seems to be more about giving the featured artists ways to express how they are evolving turntable expressionism or certainly trying to come up with something new, or original that doesn't involve furiously scratching a kick-drum sound to death. Especially "T-Rock & Faust", "Radar" & "Planet Asia", who all seem determined to think 'Outside the box', and push the direction into interesting places, and I'd even go so far as to say that their contributions are 'Stunning' in places.
It's certainly an album that continues the excellence of the previous installments of the series, and if anything the lesser known artists on this installment, almost seem as if they have something to prove, considering the exceptional talent that was on Vol's 1 & 2......and they most certainly rise to the challenge, as there's a genuine feeling that these artists are using these turntables as an musical instruments, as opposed to merely a piece of machinery.
So if you're wondering whether you should buy this album, because you have previous volumes and you're not burned out on the whole DJ/Turntable approach, and neither fussed at the lower profile Dj's, and are only concerned about the quality of the album, (although to be fair the quality is never in question here) then I highly recommend this (especially if you can find it cheap). but those that are trying this for the first time, or indeed unsure as the which volume to go for. Then I recommend starting with volume 1, and if that captures your imagination (in the way it did me), then you'll be well set for picking up volume 2, and then this edition (which is easily as worthwhile as the others). and (hopefully) you have one of the finest series of DJ/Turntable albums in recent years. Tremendous stuff!!
Wonderful Europhic Trip for your ears & mind........2000-08-27
I dig this CD, man. This is where it all comes from. Good rap, head boppin beats, skillful scratching. You cannot expect much better anywhere else. This is the best CD I have ever heard since Soundbombing II, which focused a lot on lyrical skills, well this one focuses where it all matters. Behind the music. What an amazing tribute to some of the most skilled spinners out there.
Get this CD, you will not be dissapointed. ... it was an impulse buy I didn't regret. And neither should you.
Peace out
This is the most ill scratchin cd you can get........2000-06-27
If you want to wow your friends with the best beats and unbelievable not stop scratchin, then this cd is for you.
Is your party not going so well?
No more booze, and its causing people to leave. Well bring them back with "Deep Concentration Vol. 3"
No gangster rap here. What you get is one funky beat after another, and just when you thought it couldn't get any funkier it really starts to funk your noodle.
This cd will constantly make you happy, you'll want to learn how to break dance. Their is no need to skip one track. I pledge allegiance to this cd.
a good buy.......2000-06-19
Anyone familiar with Om won't be disappointed with this disc. Tight beats, turntable heroics, the whole lot. The rap tracks offer a nice "rest" between the more turntable driven tracks (don't get me wrong, I love tables, but every once in a while I need to hear some less abstract phrasing). Standout songs include the Ming and FS cut, and the Blak Forest track. PUTS and Space Travelers also come correct. I recommend it.

Nowhere is the divide between the mainstream and the underground greater than in hip-hop. While most hip-hop fans nod their heads to Puff Daddy and Master P., still others take solace in the idea that artists like those who appear on Deeper Concentration exist to push the music further into the future. The artists featured on this compilation are the (presently) unknown saviors of the genre: turntablist warriors like the Beat Junkies, Mix Master Mike, and Rob Swift of the X-Ecutioners; the subversive art-hop of New York City's illbient DJ Spooky (here with Organized Konfusion); and the more straightforward hip-hop of Mass Influence. It's a shame that many mainstream fans don't know about the cut-up collages of beats and pieces found on Swift's "The Age of Television" or the understated, sublime rapping of Siah and Yeshua DapoED on the aptly titled "The Cure for Stagnation." And unlike in mainstream rap and hip-hop, here the chasm between electronic and hip-hop closes: jungle and dub inch their way next to slow breakbeats while weird, off-kilter rhythms supply a purely instrumental soundtrack and--surprise!--they don't feel a bit out of place next to the rapping and scratching. --Tricia Romano

This mix makes no sense. How can someone put together a compilation with such mastery and sheer genius and not be awarded something far greater than a measly Nobel Prize? Each cut on this CD will have you pinching your nipples and running from the cops with a backpack full of spray cans. And if your parents catch you coming home late at night with a bag full of rattling cans, if they've heard this mix, they will understand. You will bond.
A True Cure For Stagnation.......2000-06-04
This album is a true cure for stagnation in the world of flossy jiggy rap .In an age of hiphop where to be a star you have to make enemys drive a benz smoke blunts and drink champaigne i was beginning to worry about where hip hop in general was going .The beats are refreshing the rhymes are funky the instrumentals and samples are dope this album rules. The clear highlight was Siah annd yeshua dapoeds cure for stagnation . if you liked these check REFLECTION ETERNAL and DIAMOND. a brilliantly made album but WARNING . If you are a fan of BAD BoY , Death Row , Master P etc do not buy this as you would be wasting the valuable cash which could help buy that benz and eventualy lead you to rap superstardom. Oh my G-d.......1999-12-16
Yo this is sick. The best cutting by the best D.J.'s known to man. Get this now! Crazy up's to the boys in the 5102, Shap holding it down in the hill, and all the peeps at S&S!
A head-nodder with sonic complexity.......1999-11-27
This is the future of hip hop. Musical fusion, without pop simplicity. Here, you'll find some of the world's finest DJs and DJ crews mixing vocal and instrumental samples with some original beats to create the progressive hip hop sound you've been searching for.
If you like the Invisibl crew, Beat Junkies, Z-trip, Shadow, DJ Craze, Primo, material from the Return of the DJ series Rob Swift and the rest of the X-ecutioners, you'll love this. If you've never heard of the aformentioned, then you're probably not ready for this album.
I especially like the big band sound from track 4 (or is it 5?) combined with that big beat. Lovely. I promise you, this purchase will be money well-spent.
Super-funky mutant hip-hop at it's most raw.......1999-10-25
While it might not be quite as groundbreaking as it's predecessor, Deeper Concentration, Vol. 2 is just as innnovative as the first installment. This version places much more emphasis on rapping than the expanding instrumentals on the first volume. For the most part, the lyricists hold it down (the highlight being Siah and Yeshua DapoED's "The Cure for Stagnation"). A special treat comes in the form of "Liquidized Language," featuring a trio of British MCs who rip it just as hard as any Brooklyn head ever did. The instrumentals are also mind-blowing at times. J-Boogie's "Ritual of the Nile" is probably the best track on the whole disc, using an Indian melody and building it into a funky percussive jam. This CD has it's downfalls, though. While the idea behind Rob Swift's "The Age of Television" is great, the music backing the sample timeline is mediocre at best, as is the syncopated piano boredom of Mass Influence's contribution to the album. But for the most part, innovation + technique + Technics = Deeper Concentration, Vol. 2... pick it up.

One of my favourites of all time.......2004-02-28
This album was one of those lucky finds in the CD Club I was a member of- I saw the name Deep Forest and bought it without knowing anything else about it. I am so glad! This album makes me want to dance and dream. It can both move your body and put you in a trance. A great intersection of Jon Anderson's cerebral wistfulness, Deep Forest and others' adventurousness, and the Latin flavour of the original songs.

I have owned this this cd before I had to buy it agian, it was stolen from me. I bought it when it first came out and 7 yrs later it still sounds good
It's Damn Good..........2001-02-08
Moves you like Sasha and Digweed. Vibrant and exotic. Expansive. Gets in there and writhes. It's a superb and unique recording. Cerebrally stimulating. Brings you up and lets you go...you'll love it.

This CD is a classic. If you are a fan of Mobb Deep or any Queensbridge rap then this is for you. This isn't the type of music you are gonna hear on the radio. I love this CD. Prodigy isn't gettin enough love. The best tracks are Rock Dat..., Keep It Thoro, H.N.I.C., The Realness, Diamond, Y.B.E, and You Could Never Feel My Pain which is about his fight with sickle cell. Go get this you won't be disappointed. This is real rap. Not that commercial garbage. One.
