With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.

I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.

I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!

I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.

Too Studied.......2005-06-22

Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)

Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

This is the best Heart Album sence Little Queen and or Dreamboat Annie.Im three years late in buying this record and now can,t live with out it.Ann and Nancy rock like the good old days no pop hits on this CD just good hard Rock $ Roll. Why to go girls. Five Stars!!!

Heart - Comes Back After A Decade Away.......2007-05-06

After Heart released "Desire Walks On" in 1993 and the live "The Road Home" in 1994 it looked as though the band had decided to pack it up for good. The Wilson sisters formed The Love Mongers and Heart was pretty much put on the back burner for the better part of a decade. So, it was to the surprise of many that n 2004 Heart made a huge artistic comeback with the release of one of the better studio albums of their career "Jupiter's Darling". At this point Heart as a band is basically just Ann and Nancy Wilson. No one remains from either the original or 80's / 90's era lineups. Even longtime member Howard Leese is nowhere to be found on this disc. In their place are a cast of young musicians who seem to have bred new life into the tried and true Heart formula. "Jupiter's Darling" is a concept album. To quote the album "Jupiter's Darling is the story of a temptress who lures men of power away from making war". The story line appears to be followed rather loosely through the album, but it is not really the focus. The main aspect of the album is the individual songs, and for the most part they are all good. The cheesy synthesizers are long gone and in some way this album harkens back to their 70's roots. The opening track "Make Me" with it acoustic guitar intro will immediately remind one of "Crazy On You" from "Little Queen". Heart has always had a Led Zeppelin influence and I think it makes it's presence known throughout this disc. The mix of rockers, and acoustic oriented ballads fit's pretty close to an album like Led Zeppelin III. Nancy Wilson takes a larger role on this one and sings lead on no less than 5 songs. Her voice is not as strong as Ann's, but she has a sweet quality to her vocals that seems to really work on certain songs. Overall I would think that people who came on board the Heart band wagon in the 80's may not like this album that much, but for people who like their 70's classic output this is a fine return to form.

Perhaps it's the lead song's thrumming chords instinctive of classic songs like "Love Alive," or the crisp shrill of Ann Wilson's voice that make the commencing of Heart's first studio release in over ten years a refreshing return. Sisters Ann and Nancy have grown from a multitude of vines starting out as Seattle's first band of hard rock to transformations from the mushroom-flavored rock of the 70's to the glamour of big hair and big hits during the 80's. Jupiter's Darling shows that the first sisters of rock have kept the best of their musical chapters and left the less preserved where it belongs, as Nancy Wilson sings in "Things," with her voice as acoustic as her guitar chords, "It's all the same, we figured out what to take and what to leave for the honey bees." "Things" is followed by "The Perfect Goodbye," a perfect tune with hooks that catch the ear while latching onto the heart. Heart's memorable blend of guitars and background melodies with Ann Wilson's sharp vocals are revisited as she sings, "No time no tell-as from your lips, the words that never fell, it's a simple farewell." The sisters follow with the power ballad "Enough," and then kick their heels with the rock flavored "Move On," where Ann shows she can still belt a song and Nancy can still play guitar with the best of them. Heart can still write melodies to both kick and soothe the soul. And their salt of the earth lyrics will make you think they never went away.

Heart Returns as Big as Jupiter.......2006-11-23

I totally missed it when Jupiters Darling was released in 2004. I discovered it browsing the web one night in 2005 when I was wondering if Heart had been doing anything lately. I immediately got myself a copy. I admit that I had a bit of trepidation, as I had no idea where their musical tastes had led them in the intervening years, and they have certainly dabbled in a variety of styles popular at the time they have recorded. (Which as most know, hasn't always been a good thing. Just say no to synthesizers!)

My trepidation was somewhat realized, in that there are a couple songs I don't care for too much, as they seem to be more in the style of post-grunge alternative rock, which only occasionally appeals to me. That's not to say they aren't good songs, other Heart fans with a different range of tastes may like them a great deal better. The thing about this album is that it contains 16 songs. If you don't like a few of them, so what? There's plenty left to choose from!

As others have mentioned, Nancy's songs aren't a strong point of the album. Nancy really does have a beautiful voice. But Ann's is more powerful and has an edginess that propels it into greatness. Plus, I'm such an unabashed Annie fan that any song she doesn't sing gives me a bit of a withdrawal twitch. When in the right mood, I enjoy "I'm Fine", though ironically enough it falls somewhat into the category I mentioned above. I do really like "I Need the Rain". It's my second favorite that Nancy has sung, after "Stranded" on the Brigade album.

Quite a few of the songs are sort of middle of the road for me. I really enjoy listening to them, but they aren't the ones that tend to play in my head as I'm going about my daily business. Among those are songs like "The Oldest Story in the World", "The Perfect Goodbye", "Enough", and "I Give Up".

Jupiters Darling does contain several songs that have become some of my Heart favorites. Most of them slowly grew on me over the course of several listenings until they finally stuck in my head just as much as "Crazy on You" or "Love Alive". I'm hard pressed to say what my absolute favorite is from the album. At first it was "Lost Angel". But depending on my mood it could also be "Make Me" or "No Other Love".

"No Other Love" is interesting because it's so incredibly simple as far as lyrics go, yet it really does give me that "I'm flying" feeling. The instrumental arrangement for the song is perfect, first a simple beat and guitar, then adding mandolin, and finally a cello I believe it is, fully fleshing it out into a thing of beauty. I consider "Make Me" to be classic Heart in sound and style. It starts off with Nancy displaying her mastery of the acoustic guitar, then breaks into a rock rhythm while blending acoustic and electric. Not my top favorite on the album, but I really really like it, "Fallen Ones" is very Zeppelinesque in style, and is their most blatant homage to date.

So to sum up, Jupiters Darling is a very strong addition to Heart's incredible catalogue. If there's one overriding weakness to the album it's that it's not an internally consistent whole, due to the variety of music styles and number of tracks. This was an album that had to grow on me. I didn't immediately take to it, but I listen to parts of it it now as much as I do my older faves, which include Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, and Heart. (Just to be complete, my newer favorites are Desire Walks On and The Road Home.) I consider Jupiters Darling to be a solid middle tier Heart album on my scale of most to least favorites, lumping it in somewhere near Brigade and Bebe le Strange. Ann continues to amaze and astound me. I don't think anyone listening to the album who didn't already know would ever guess she's in her 50's. Rock on!

p.s. I get the feeling that people who rated this album with one star are those who only liked the 80's albums and do not appreciate the true breadth of musical talent that the Wilson sisters possess. The 80's are done and over with. It's time to move on, just like those of us who originally loved Dreamboat Annie have moved on.

Magic of Music.......2006-09-30

I first heard this soundtrack circa spring of '92. My niece Mel had this playing in her car one day we went out of town and it moved me so much I immediately went out and bought it for myself. I was heavy into U2's "Achtung Baby" at the time and thought it was really cool that this soundtrack was named after a song on that c.d. and was also included on it.

I'd heard most of these artists already, but this soundtrack seemed to bring out a different feel to them. Every song on this soundtrack is gorgeous and often stunning, a few even bring me to tears every time I hear them, one being Jane Siberry's "Calling All Angels" {I recently heard a beautiful cover of this song one day coming home from Seattle on "A Prarie Home Companion"; Garrison Keiller's All Star Band and a female singer who's name escapes me played a moving rendition of it and I was amazed by it, it's power, it's beauty, even played live in this context}.

One of all-time Favorite c.d.'s in my music collection, the music on this soundtrack seems to transcend time and space. Beautiful and moving.

Music Of Moods.......2006-08-17

My fiancee kept trying to play her old casette version of this soundtrack. It was so old that it kept on messing up her player. I ordered this music on CD, and the first night she received it, she could not believe the improved sound quality of the music she cherished. Listening in a new way kept her bragging about the songs all night long. Well, almost all night long.

Great songs, great artist. Mood music. Try it.

Sara McLachlan-esque breathy, ethereal, yet powerful vocals get a trip-hop spin from Daughter Darling, and it's a case of two great tastes that taste great together. DJ Infiniti's non-intrusive scratching raises the group's moody, folkish, Celtic-tinged singing and tunes from the list of Lachlan-wannabes and helps the group stake out territory of its own. However, the album is not so trip-hoppy that I think it would only appeal to fans of that unjustly overlooked subgenre; the voice and piano work are strong enough to carry the album even without the edge Infiniti provides. The album is consistent in quality all the way through, with numerous highlights, and is enjoyable enough to sustain repeated listens. But beware of listening too carefully: the quality of the music exceeds the quality of the lyrics, and you'll start to notice if you concentrate too hard. The best way to listen to this album is to lie back let it wash over you without reflecting on it too much. Let Daughter Darling hypnotize you. You'll get lost in this album and love it.

so dont trust them...all of these songs have a different make up (within the genre of course...there's not as much range as one song being gabber waltz & the other a sadcore country garage techno experiment...who would really wont that?)...the first six are great then the rest are all good as well but it's hard to stomach such a well-crafted cd all at once...might have to take a break, listen to something less interesting for a min. (i.e. lamb, nightmares on wax, k&d whatever whatever)
bottom line people!!!!
...this is the best american trip-hop outfit out right now!

Sweet Shadows Indeed!.......2006-05-10

Daughter Darling has missed the trip hop boat by about a decade. Still, the album doesn't seem dated, and being a fan of trip hop, I'm glad to see a group still out there producing original stuff in the genre. Sweet Shadows may actually be one of the better trip hop albums, as in it is more balanced. It's less depressing than Tricky, but less poppy than Olive. It's got a nice combination of dark melodies that are somewhat catchy, while not being over the top in either direction.

The whole album is quite good and coherent. It sets the tone with the opening chords and doesn't waiver too far from that place of calm, subdued and perhaps a bit sad. This type of music always somewhat borders on the sentimental, melodramatic, self-pitying pit fall, but they manage to skilfully hover the rim without falling in. Honestly I was a bit scared when I saw there was a cover of Dust in the Wind on the album, but somehow they pull it off and make you almost forget it was a Kansas song.

This is a great album if you actually enjoy a rainy day every once in a while. It is quite mesmerizing and hypnotic, but then of course it also runs into the danger of being repetitious. Perhaps it depends most upon your mood when you listen to it, as to what form it takes. Either way, it is definitely worth checking out! And just one more thing, the album title Sweet Shadows is perhaps the perfect description for the mood and tone of this album.

I previewed this cd on amazon.com before I purchased it. It is such an AMAZING cd. I never heard of Daughter Darling before the amazon.com recommendation. You need to get this. The entire cd is amazing.

David Darling, the "Lord of Largo," returns with another album of slow-motion melodies and cello textures. Although he's recorded many albums in the interim, this is really a follow-up to 1993's 8-String Religion. That CD, unlike his more austere recordings for ECM, was a highly produced affair, with electronically processed cello, overdubbed with piano, a touch of synthesizer, and some environmental sounds. Cello Blue follows suit as Darling creates a richly sonorous world, full of melancholy and yearning, an interior rumination that opens up into a world of cloud-strewn skies and refracted sunshine. Layering pizzicato cello against languid bowed lines with droplets of piano, Darling creates enveloping soundscapes only occasionally shortchanged by pedestrian synthesizer programming. However, one listen to the serene lullaby of Darling's title track or the delicate pastoral expanse of "Morning," and it's evident that Darling, along with Tim Story and a few others, forms the foundation of ambient chamber music. --John Diliberto

Excellent-I'm currently using it in my treatment room for therapeutic massage and my clients love it. I like working to it- it is soothing and melodic- I would highly recommend this for relaxation and/or background music. I also love the use of mostly real and not synthesized music.

I buy music for massage almost every week and this is the one CD I would recommend over any other out there. I have been playing it almost every day for two years during my massage sessions and almost everyone on the table wants to know who the artist is and what the name of the album is. His other CD's are also beautiful, but I have not used them for massage for they are not quite as ambient. Other music I recommend for massage include Migration - Nakai, Afterglow - Wheater, Hoppe and Tillman and Shadowplay - Tim Story.

An Excellent Must Purchace CD!.......2003-02-17

This CD contains some great New Age music. I have been listening to "Echos" and "Hearts of Space" types of music for years and I highly recommend this disc. It is great for stress relief and calming down. It is also perfect for driving home after a nasty day at work. This album is a good investment!

My new favorite CD.......2002-10-22

I listened to about 15 seconds of a sample and ordered it. About 1 week later, it became the theme music for a romantic encounter.
Now, each night I drift off to blissfull slumber to the sounds of "Cello Blue." If you enjoy introspection and relaxation, do yourself a favor and get this one.

Very Different From thier Previous Albums.......2007-03-13

Glenn Danzig was never known for complex musical arrangements but I feel that in his early days as a performer he had something to offer. With his first band, THE MISFITS, Glenn introduced the punk world to monsters, evil, and chaotic music that I feel was the heaviest punk at the time (1977-83) had to offer. I myself am not a huge punk fan but THE MISFITS to me stood on thier own from the whole scene. I don't think any other band sounded like them. "Earth A.D." was released in 1983 and was the last record they would make that meant anything. It opens up with the title track and drags you into the dark and disturbing mind of Danzig. "Earth A.D." sounds as if the hordes of hell are let loose. We then move into "Queen Wasp". After a generous amount of feedback, you are punched in the face with a devastating guitar riff played by Doyle. Glenn's ever present howling opens this track into vampire women and death with a ferocity that cannott be matched. Moving right along, we next hear "Devilock" which again pummells the listeners ears into submission. "Death Comes Ripping" sounds just like the title and "Green Hell" is a prototype to METALLICA with it's devastating downstrokes. Now, we have "Mommy, Can I go out and Kill Tonite?". One of the best. Halfway thru the album, we move onto "Wolfbslood". My guess is this little ditty is about turning into a werewolf. Hence the lyrics, "it's wolfs blood and it's pumping like it's f***ing in my veins and I feel my vertabre shaking". Cool stuff. "Demonomania" is a short thrasher that takes no prisoners and then we are treated to "Bloodfeast" which to me is a precurser to Glenn's next band, SAMHAIN. "Hellhound" is a virtual monster from the depths of hades that gives out no mercy and expects none in return. I should mention that "Die, Die my Darling" and "We Bite" were not originally on this album. As well as "Mommy, Can I go out and Kill Tonite". I believe these were singles, if I'm not mistaken. With the invention of CD technology and remastering techniques, "Earth A.D." needed an overhaul. It did get it on this particular release and that is great. When I first heard this album, I had borrowed it from a friend in high school and I thought that there was something wrong with his copy. So, I went out and bought it, and it sounded the same as his. It wasn't until it came out on CD that it's full effect was felt by me unfortunetly years after it was originally released. Personally, I love this album and is a most needed addition to fans of extreme music. As far as the sound on the CD goes it is so much crisper and clearer and in no way loses any of it's awesome power. All the dirt is still there. It just sounds a lot better. I should also point out that Glenn's lyrics on "Earth A.D." are his most twisted and venomous. In his long career of 31 years he has never matched the lyrics of this album. It sounded like he was a demented serial killer on the rampage. I wouldn't doubt that even SLAYER thought he was nuts. THE MISFITS last album with Glenn Danzig is a blood-spattered platter of punk in it's most evil and primitive form.

not quite like their other albums.......2006-11-04

if you read any of my other reviews you will hear my go on and on about the misfits and what an influence they had/have on me. so why only the one star? because if youll notice the track list, it is simply the last 7 songs on the collection 1 album and the last 5 on the collection 2...so you may already own this and not even know it. just buy collection 1 and 2 and you WILL then have this album too!

Awesome!!! Yet Another Killer Fits Release!.......2006-08-06

(this album accually gets a 4.5 from me, but The Misfits are too good for me to give anything under a 5!)

Earth AD/Wolfsblood is awesome, but much different from anything that The Misfits have EVER done before. Many of these songs are extremely fast. Nothing else was as fast or brutal before this album, and nothing else is as fast or brutal today. But it's very good. It contains some very superb Misfits songs, like Earth AD, Devilock, Death Comes Ripping, Green Hell, Mommy Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight?, Demonomania, Bloodfeast, We Bite, and my personal favorite Die Die My Darling.

If there's any bad thing about this album, it's these three songs: Wolfsblood, Queen Wasp, and Hellhound. They're not bad songs at all, but they all sound exactly the same and IMO, they're kinda boring. I don't hate em, they're just not favorites. They're average.

So, if you're looking for a punk/metal album with an extreme amount of originality, go for this!(hell, buy all their albums!) It's dark, creepy, brutal, and will leave you bleeding and in stitches and begging for more.

KILLER 'FITS ALBUM.......2006-05-09

This is probably the fastest, most in your face Misfits album. Every song is unique. This is probably the third best Misfits album, the first being "Walk Among Us", and the second being "Static Age", so after getting those get this, or buy the box set.

Misfits do Hardcore.......2006-01-24

The final MISFITS recordings were "Earth A.D./Wolfsblood" and the "Die, Die My Darling" EP, both included on this CD. After making their mark as a horror movie version of RAMONES doing ELVIS PRESLEY, the band adopted the "in" style of punk at the time (1982), which was playing blazingly fast hardcore punk. Although considered now a classic MISFITS album, at the time it was released many fans (and even some of the band members themselves) were put off by this slightly less melodic approach in favor of straight thrash beats, ultimately serving as a huge influence to up and coming Thrash Metal bands such as SLAYER and (guess who?) METALLICA. I listened to this album just months before METALLICA's "Garage Days Re-Revisited" EP was released in the summer of 1987, so I prefer MISFITS' version of "Green Hell" slightly over METALLICA's. At the time I heard this, I was more keen on liking this type of hardcore: fast, unrelenting and ferociously brutal, yet it retained those classic MISFITS melodies though buried under the intense barrage of guitars, bass and drums. I have grown to like their more melodic material a bit more, but nontheless, "Earth A.D." is an essential album for any true MISFITS fan or for fans of vintage, head ripping hardcore punk.

Decent playing, lousy arrangements.......2005-11-11

Well, apparently I'm in the minority, but I found this CD disappointing. I bought it because I fell in love with "Song to the Moon" when I heard it on the radio, but this track and possibly the "Londonderry Air" are the only ones worth listening to. Although the melodies chosen for this album are indeed beautiful, the arrangements (Rieu's own) are poorly done. I would much more highly recommend Joshua Bell's Romance of the Violin, which has a similar theme, albeit restricted to classical tunes.

Forget the hype, this is great music.......2005-08-04

Try not to think about the cheesy "Andre Rieu in Tuscany" PBS special. This is a very pleasing program of selections of great romantic melodies, beautifully arranged. Few people are going to purchase a CD of Dvorak's Rusalka just to hear "Song to the Moon" so this is the place to hear it. And it's even better on Rieu's violin than in the original vocal version. Rieu plays perfectly in tune (not always easy in the higher registers of the violin) and has exquisite phrasing that brings out the musicality of even the most over-recorded selections.

Rhieu's arrangements (with Jo Huijts) have hints of "beautiful music" (think Ray Coniff) but only hints, and the result is very tasteful. For example, the piano obligato under the strings on "O mio babbino caro" makes you wish that Puccini had thought of that.

This is a wonderful album to listen to while relaxing and would make a great gift for someone who appreciates classical music but doesn't have specific preferences.

Music That Will Touch Your Heart.......2004-12-05

This one is one of my favorites of Andre Rieu. It's very romantic. It reminded me of my honeymoon in Vienna. I like to play it at home a lot. It lifts the spirit and touches the heart. Made me cry one time.

Very pleased! Superior to the movie.......2007-05-01

I have to admit, this soundtrack is far superior to the movie's. The only reason why I am not giving this 5 stars is because the only person in the movie who outshines his original counterpart on THIS CD is Eddie Murphy. He outdoes Cleavant Derricks by far as the character "Jimmy Early." But everybody else in the original cast sings with so much more vigor, energy, emotion, etc. The movie cast sounds way too pop, way too produced, too soft. I did not grow up listening to this musical, seeing as how I saw the movie before buying the original soundtrack, but for the first time, I like the original better (except for Eddie Murphy. Eddie is AWESOME and WILD).

Another reason why this doesn't quite get 5 stars is because this soundtrack is missing quite a few songs that were in the original play but not on here:

"I'm Looking For Something" (in the movie)
"Goin' Downtown" (which is in the movie)
"Takin' The Long Way Home" (in the movie)
"Party Party" (not in the movie nor the movie soundtrack. This is song where Lorrell begins her affair with Jimmy)
"I Want you Baby" (in the movie)
"Heavy" (in the movie)
"Love Love Me Baby" (in the movie)
"One More Picture Please" (not in the movie nor the movie soundtrack. Deena tells Curtis she wants to be come an actress. This particular subplot is portrayed in the film.)
"Got to Be Good Times" (not in the movie nor the movie soundtrack. This is sung by "The Five Tuxedos" right before Jimmy Early goes onstage to do his performance of "I Meant You No Harm" and then "The Rap." "Got To Be Good Times" has been replaced with "Perfect World," which is sung by a Jackson 5 imitation group in the movie).

So, if you want to experience this musical in it's entirety, you are probably going to have to find a bootleg recording or see it off-broadway or something. I know this soundtrack has an extra 3 songs that they didn't include before, but what about the leftover 9?

Oh well, I'm sure in about a decade we'll be able to finally listen to the COMPLETE musical, but in the meantime, if you want to experience as much as you can, see the movie, then buy both soundtracks. The movie soundtrack has somethings written that were never in the original play.

I was surprized and felt very lucky when I saw this special version. YOu get three bonus tracks in this package, and it brings back great memories. The broadway original cast is far superior to the movie cast. In this cd you get that whole 15 minutes during the I'm telling you sequence starting with Jimmy's riding in singing "Driving Down the Strip" all the way through the fight sequence of "it's all over" straight into "And I am Telling YOU". You also get the finale where Effie joins the Dreams to sing Dreamgirls, which was left off the original cast album. One thing that is a joy is to get to hear Lorretta Devine sing "Ain't No Party" which was cut from the movie( Lorrell has no solo in the movie). Unlike the concert version where you get the whole score and show, but other than Lilias White the whole show is miscast, the original cast is the best by far for knowing what the show should sound like. There is a bonus cd with click tracks for singing with certain numbers for the show and a bonus disco version of Jennifer Holiday singing "And I Am Telling You" which was tremedously popular.

Mancini & Andrews Perfection.......2004-07-01

Of all the Julie Andrews CDs I own (MARY POPPINS, SOUND OF MUSIC, CAMELOT, VICTOR/VICTORIA, & this one), DARLING LILI is the one by far. Julie shows such grace and versatility on this soundtrack. Her voice combined with the music of the master of music Henry Mancini ("Moon River," "Baby Elephant Walk," etc.) makes for the perfect soundtrack. The songs are positively haunting. "Whistling Away the Dark" is probably the best song Miss Andrews ever sang on film. The two different renditions of "I'll Give You Three Guesses" are each in there own way magnificent. There are some songs not featuring Julie Andrews. One song I love sung by the character Crepe Sousette is "Good Will Ambassador." The best instrumental piece is the one titled "Gypsy Violin." It's deep and makes an impact if you let it. Still, Julie Andrews really makes the album, but only by the good music of Henry Mancini. Again, an excellent CD.

Darling Lili soundtrack surfaces at last!!!!.......2004-03-14

I will never understand why this movie has not done better thru the years. At the very least the soundtrack should be a part of everyones "easy listening" collection. It took quite a while to find but it was well worth the wait. I must admit finding this album would certainly have been expedited had I remembered how to spell Lili ! ! !

I don't feel the sound is as crisp as it could be (it wasn't crisp on the vinyl either) but I believe the performances easily push this album to 5 stars.

Julie Andrews with an underrated gem of a score.......2003-11-26

DARLING LILI was one of Julie Andrews' biggest flops, a movie musical about a German spy masquerading as a cabaret singer. Henry Mancini's score for the film (with lyrics by Johnny Mercer) is haunting, romantic and brilliant and includes the bittersweet ballad "Whistling Away the Dark".

Julie Andrews is, of course, fetching in everything she does, and DARLING LILI is no exception. Andrews infuses "Whistling Away the Dark" with a smokey timbre in her voice which she rarely utilised before or after this musical. She's also lovely in the jaunty musical-hall number "I'll Give You Three Guesses" and later gets raw and raunchy for the strip-tease version, also featured on this album.

"Smile Away Each Rainy Day" and "The Girl in No Man's Land" are both delivered exceptionally by Andrews; and Gloria Paul is featured in the number "Your Good-Will Ambassador".

Julie Andrews fans should snap up this album before the publisher decides to delete it. Amazon.com import this particular album, which is only available from the Spanish RCA-label.

Worth The Wait !.......2001-10-11

I currently have two vinyl copies of this soundtrack originally from 1969...one opened and one not! Now to know it has been formatted to the digital domain was worth the wait! Ms. Andrews sparkles with a bubbly shine on all vocals as well as not appearing forced when committing to the darker tones of "Whistling..." The songs that some think were added were from the children sing-a-longing during an extended cue with Hudson and Andrews enjoying countryside and picnics...she even has a tra-la-la segue that's in the movie and not the lp! Oh well...beggar's can't be choosers.....! And my begging paid off!
Kudos to the forces of nature that brought this to fruition! Many thanks...!!!!

5-STARS PLUS.......2001-09-30

Whether you liked the movie or not (I did but Rock Hudson was miscast, i.e., it bombed); the simply truth is Henry Mancini and Julie Andrews together is unbeatable. The song THE GIRL ON NO MAN'S LAND is worth the price of the CD alone .... only Mancini's/Andrews' I LIKE MY JAZZ HOT (Victor/Victoria) comes close to it. Get it before they're out of it. You can't purchase it in a store in USA. They (AMAZON) are importing it from Spain.

Something very special.......2004-04-21

The previous reviewer was pretty much spot on. Christoff is genuinely magnificent in these recordings, power and beauty coexist in his voice, and the deep emotion he expresses is made more powerful by being tempered by control. The accompaniment serves to showcase this voice and is more than adequate to this task. It is perhaps not always "Herbert Von Karajan" smooth, but this is probably no disadvantage, you could argue that this is in keeping with this selection of Mussorgsky's wonderful"rough hewn" folk flavoured music. As the previous reviewer indicated, this will appeal to fans of the unusual as it is in itself something remarkably different to almost anything I've heard before. I can say however that out of the 1000 + recordings I own, it is very probably the one I am most glad I purchased, and certainly one of my very favourites. Unfortunately I am probably preaching to the choir, as if you are reading this review you probably already enjoy Mussorgsky, or are at least familiar or interested in his work. You may also be a fan of Schubert's song cycles and Lieder.If that is the case then you should certainly enjoy this C.D. The sad point is that this recording should also appeal to people who as yet still believe that they have no interest in "Classical" music, and may never come across this recording. I would certainly recommend this to Tom Waits fans for a start, especially those who enjoyed his recent album "Alice",and also afficionados of Folk music, World music or the art of songwriting.
I know it's a cliche, but I'd have to give this 6 stars out of 5

Music to make you forget who you are for a minute.......2003-08-13

I was told about Christoff's 1950s recordings by a musician friend. I had heard a little bit about him, and was already
familiar with some of the Mussorgsky songs in another recording,
so figured I couldn't miss. To say that I was flabbergasted would be putting it lightly. The man was not only a superb singer - what control! what versatility! - he was a consummate actor. After all, they say he was the best Boris Godunov since Chaliapin - I believe it. But, to particulars: On the first half of this disc he is accompanied by a terrific pianist (whose name temporarily escapes me)and on the other half by the Orchestre de la Radiodiffusion Francaise, who are a tad ragged (as they often were) and undermiked at times but fine powerful accompaniment. If all you know of Mussorgsky is the Pictures - and you have a taste for the unusual - you owe it to yourself to pick this up. Your life will never be quite the same again, I guarantee it!
