3 Is The Magic Number is a beautiful, messy melting pot of styles and influences. Vocalist Jason Gleason credits ELO, Travis, Pearl Jam, Talking Heads and U2 as inspirations. Great Album.......2007-06-25

The first album from former Further Seems Forever frontman Jason Gleason is amazing. The music manages to be both subtle and catchy, creating a mature sound that pairs extremely well with Jason's awesomely strong vocals. "At the Moon" and "Contagious" are the two best tracks, the former showcasing some amazingly addicting vocals and the latter being a great rock song that builds to a powerful finish. "With my Voice" is another great track. This is very different from Jason's previous work, but give it a chance and it will grow on you. The entire album rocks, with the exception of "The 21 Gun Salute", which is a mediocre song.

A good album.......2006-09-12

This is a review I wrote for my school paper, so if it's kind of cheesy and overdone - that'd be why:

When I heard that Jason Gleason (formerly of Further Seems Forever) had a new band with his wife, Bella, and her former Element 101 bandmate, Salvatore Ciaravino, I was really excited. After all, Gleason's work on Further Seems Forever's How To Start A Fire still blows me away.

ActionReaction features Gleason's powerful emotional vocals backed by a variety of music. From the dance feel of "March On" to the `90s feel of "Can You Hear The Sun?" to the electronica vibe of "The 21 Gun Salute," 3 Is The Magic Number manages to dabble in just a little bit of everything.

The album has a few really strong songs including the opener, "Sinner's Algebra," the powerful "Contagious" and the soothing closer, "Spark The Sun." Though more listenable than any music Hilary Duff has ever made, the album slips into some corny moments including "Have A Cocktail," a title that I figured only 311 would ever try to use.

So, like Adam Sandler's movie career, it has some good moments and some not so good ones, but rest assured, 3 Is The Magic Number is definitely more enjoyable than watching "50 First Dates."

Where are the new songs?.......2006-09-11

I am a bit let down by this album. This is their third release, and yet they still include songs that have appeared on both of their previous EPs. This wouldn't even be a big deal if they were different versions, but with the exception of The Exit Poll, Amen (which sounds like they did some reworking since it's last appearance) are the exact same versions. There are only 4 of the 11 songs on this album that have not been released before. Only one song from their first 7 song EP is not here. I feel like they have ripped off the fans that they know will buy their music. I'm not trying to be bitter or a jerk, I just think they should have taken more time and released more new songs, rather than recycling old recordings.

Jason is Back, Better than Ever.......2006-08-27

After the demise of "Further Seems Forever" not many were expecting anything else from vocalist Jason Gleason. It's been three years in the making and Jason, along with his former label mates of Element 101 -- Bella on keyboards and Sal Ciaravino on bass -- has come together and with Action Reaction they've created a sound unlike others. They are a three piece band and three is the magic number. This is one of the best albums to to emerge in the three years.

"At the Moon" is a prime example of his intelligence and his masterful control over his lyrics while "Can You Hear the Sun?" is a more talkier rock jam which sets the style and mood of the rest of the album. "3 is the Magic Number" is the perfect rock album for anyone seeking out new "alternative" music.

It happens sometimes with me. This time it worked out well:

I was in my favorite record store in ATL (shouts out to Moods) and as usual he had something playing in the back ground that cought my attention. Like a blind mouse enticed by the hypnotic melodic sounds from the pipers flute, I found myself closer to the sales counter asking "yo, who's dat you playin..??". He smiles and hands me a CD with a cover resembling something from a colorful kids book. The track that grabbed me was "That Day". It's one of those tracks that no matter how much you try to keep still, you find yourself moving to it's groove. I was sold on this track. I can't lie, I bought a CD on the strength of one track...... I usually don't do that. The 1st month after purchase, this CD stayed in rotation on my Archos Mp3 player. Now it's shuffled into other favorite tracks of mine. This release is a must for anyone looking to add a rhythm to thier everyday life.

Hot!.......2004-07-30

"That Day" is one of the BEST albums that I have purchased this year, period. I love the deep, groovy, laid back beats. Also, the vocals from Clara Hill, Jane Hamilton, and Rachel Foster on the title track, are beautiful. If you can find it, grab it!

When I first heard the song, SORRY ,I fell in love with the vocalist and the music. FLY AWAY was a hit to me shortly after. When I heard they were coming out with a CD I couldn't waite. LOVED IT, well worth the waite!!!!!!

Certainly strange.......2003-01-26

This is as odd as you can get from Richard H Kirk.....known for his paranoid music filled with Cabaret Voltaire and in his early solo recordings.....this record feels rather subdued yet strangely addictive. A work of genius that it is that he can do this but you still feel ( or perhaps yearn ) for something more abrasive and paranoid. Nonetheless this is truly something something special.....just don't think it'll be in the Cabaret Voltaire style of things

It's so digital!.......2000-10-17

This CD took me a year to get into. It's an odd one, very simplistic-seeming and a little on the creepy tip, but after a long while it started to grow on me.

Ricard H. Kirk -he and his many pseudonames- is a strange musician. His way of doing things sounds very cloistered -he drops layers in, he takes them out again, very basic operations- but his music is sophisticated, with much of the brilliance coming from the dynamics, the loud and the nearly silent and how they fuse and mingle.

It takes a lot from the listener at first, an easing up on the gears, and of course it's best played on a really good system, but this is a quiet little album that's a keeper for anyone who perserveres to the point where all the shifts and changes are second nature. In a word: contemplative. Reminds me of some of the mellower Orb songs, particularly "Spanish Castles in Space." Onobtrusive but bold in spite of the fact, which is a rare, refined combination. Like good wine as opposed to good beer - it gives you a better buzz and doesn't burn your tongue.

buy this CD.......1999-06-25

This is one of Kirk's best releases since CV broke up. More dub-oriented with heavy sampling of a variety of bizzare instruments and tripped out tape delays. Laid-back grooves, but complex enough to keep the listener interested. I'd recommend this album to any fan of electronic music.

An eclectic mix of melody and electronica.......1999-04-10

One of Richard H. Kirks first of many releases after Cabaret Voltare, without sounding alot like the latter. The Cd is fairly downtempo with a balance of light melodic textures and various drum samplings. I myself can work my graveyard shift without it putting me asleep due to the fact that each track is different than the last. Not dark not fluffy but nicely in-between. A prize for any musical collector.

The Number of Magic is magical indeed. Kirk combines a stream of bits and bytes that approach heaven. Look no further if you desire an "ambient/trance/break-beat/world/techno" experience. Definitely hard to classify, since there are no bounds in Kirk's realm. Be sure to witness the track entitled "East of Nima," for it is simply breathtaking.
