This is a collection of works by the Bach family--J.S., C.P.E., and J.C.--and includes a transcription by Johann Sebastian of a cantata by the Italian composer Francesco Conti (1682-1732). As the title suggests, these works all deal with grief; indeed, the first work, by J.C. Bach (1642-1703), "Ach, dass ich Wassers g'nug hätte," a plea by the singer to shed enough tears to have her sins forgiven, begins with the word "Ach" repeated four times. Kozena fills it with such understated sadness that it's unforgettable. In this work and throughout she sings with a legato that is flawless, tone that always finds the right dynamic for each word, and an ease of emission which makes her presentation of these works seem as natural as speech. The Conti cantata ends with a 90-second "Alleluja" that is ablaze with coloratura, and not a note is out of place; it is a nice contrast with the shadowy, lachrymose nature of the rest of the selections. Kozena's depth of feeling is matched by her ability to express it simply. Along with her colorful sound palette, she and conductor Reinhard Goebel and his Musica Antiqua Köln turn this disc in to a "must-have" for lovers of rare Baroque music and beautiful singing. --Robert Levine

One doesn't need to analyze or deconstruct this woman's technique. Just put it on your CD player and let this wonderful voice just roll over you. She manages to make CPE Bach quite accessible even to the casual listener. It doesn't hurt that she is also extraordinarily beautiful.

I become nearly speechless when contemplating this recording. It's exquisite beyond words - the almost painful beauty of Magdalena Kozena's voice creates such a personal and glorious epiphany of sorrow that it verges on the unbearable. Glorious music (including one particular aria I've not heard before, and with which I've fallen in love - I must perform it myself!), glorious singing, and glorious playing from all involved make this a recording to treasure.

Ms Kozena sings intelligently, beautifully, musically and appropriately - but more than this, she has the rare ability to sing music as though it has never been sung before. This makes her one of my favourite artists, and I simply do not hesitate when I see a new recording by her. I have not been disappointed.

One of the most powerful and moving pieces on this beautiful recording is of "Ach, dass ich Wassers g'nug hätte", the first title on the CD. It exerts a melancholic insistence, a subtle and deeply effective repeating pattern that seems to increase, rather than decrease, the musical complexity. Suzie le Blanc has also recorded this work, equally effectively. I am glad to have two such unbelievably beautiful recordings in my possession.

I do not know of anyone who, having heard this recording, does not wish to play it again.

There is not much I can say after reading some of the virtuoso reviews, here at Amazon, left before me. However I cannot resist to tell that this album is as beautiful as the fantastic portrait of Kozena and that her voice will thrill you down to your very bones and then, it will take your soul to the highst spheres of inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars The Bach Family in all its Glory.......2006-01-04

This disc highlights two important points.

First there is Kozena's mastery of the repertoire. Not since Hertha Topper has a mezzo soprano sung this reperoire so well. Encountering perfection the only thing one can express is gratitude.

Second the quality of all the works by all the members of the Bach family. Arnold Schoenberg has made the bold assessment that Bach's sons had similar talent as their father -he did not address commitment, of course-, and the works on this disc highlight the Bach family's suppremacy in this repertoire.

The level of the authentic accompaniment is excellent, the quality of the recording is exemplary.

A must.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Lamento.......2005-10-29

Even though this album is called Lamento, it's not at all gloomy, and it is certainly a great vehicle for Kozena's radiant voice.
She excels on the technical level, and sings in impeccable Baroque style, but she is also very dramatically engaged and she makes these unfamiliar compositions come to life. She takes risks, both in the choice of these compositions, and stylistic choices: I like the jaunty version of Cantata BWM 170, though it is very different from what we are used to. I also like the way this album is programmed, forming a certain meditative story of sin and redemption.
I think this is Kozena's most interesting recital to date, and I am very glad I discovered this album. It's not just her singing that is brilliant, the orchestra playing is spectacular, too. Don't hesitate to give this Lamento a try, especially if you love beautifully performed, fresh sounding Baroque music.

This is a truly rewarding wonderful disc. It offers some of the best current playing and interpretation of baroque/renaissance music in the world. I love Hille Perl. Her playing has all the hallmarks of genius; timing, phrasing, delivery, emotional impact and subtlety and dynamics. No weaknesses. She is the consumate master of the Gamba as are her peers masters of their respective instruments as well. I won't go into much more detail but if you think all "classical" sounds dull or cheesily "Romantic", think again. There's meat on these bones enough to feast for days, weeks, years even. So sit back and relax! By the way another phenom in the Gamba worl is the incredible Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks who is a rising star in all of Europe and Japan. Sadly his albums of which some are hybrid SACD format are rarely available here in the USA. This is an outrage as Ralph may be the greatest living Gambist in training. His sound is so intimate and ever changing, what tone! Anyways until Amazon wises up and starts to offer his cds you will be doing just fine with Perl!

I have many Viola da Gamba CDs, but I have to say that this has become my favorite. No other player approaches the emotional intensity of Hille Perl in her expressiveness and lyricism, even moving to tears. Her playing truly brings you to another place. Her passion for her instrument and music touches every selection in this CD. Do your heart a favor, and get this CD. I can't recommend it enough.

If you love someone, buy them this. If you want someone to love you, buy them this. If you've hurt someone, buy them this - there can be no finer act of atonement. There is much love in this CD - every note is an expression of Hille Perl's devotion to her instrument. In this outstanding collection of 16th and 17th Century music she imparts her ability for improvisation with exquisite skill. The group, comprised of five viola de gambas, harp and lute, gives each instrument space for a resonant expression of mood. Each piece is at once sombre yet evocative of "joyful memories". A charming and evocative collection, one which deserves attention from aficianados of Renaissance music.

These instrumental pieces hark back to a time when the madrigal was an unaffected love song, derived from pastoral traditions, instead of the more forceful choral delivery it later became. The group doesn't attempt to duplicate the voice with the da gambas. Instead, Perl and her colleagues present the music in fully instrumental mode. This is entirely appropriate for the instrument most often cited as coming closest to the human range of tones. The viola da gambas are given free rein to declare their endorsement of that view. With composers from Italy and Spain dominating the repetoire, this CD is a testimony to the innovations developed by Renaissance musical virtuosos. It is an even finer testimony to the skill Hille Perl and her colleagues exhibit in giving us their music.

BMG's production of this collection is worthy of the quality of the performance. The set is presented with full clarity. There are no background overtones or loss of sound. Perl's own notes for the selections are highly personalised, even flippant in some cases. Yet the comments fittingly capture the mood of each piece.     Album Description

    The Caecilia-Concert presents a varied selection of pieces composed during the seventeenth century in different styles. These compositions can be roughly categorized into three genres that existed alongside each other: vocal polyphony, diminutions based on vocal music, and instrumental music. Individually, the members of the Caecilia-Concert hold prominent positions in several of the leading period instrument ensembles, including the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopman) and The English Baroque Soloists (Sir John Eliot Gardiner). Collectively, as the Caecilia-Concert, they have performed in festivals and prestigious venues across Europe, including Holland festival Oude Muziek, Itinéraire Baroque, and London's Purcell Room. The Caecilia-Concert is named after the first Dutch Collegium Musicum founded in Arnhem in 1591, which was dedicated to Saint Caecilia, the patroness of music.

        5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous recording of wonderful Lieder!.......2005-10-05

        I saw this in Borders and grabbed it. I was not disappointed.

        The singers are very good. Simone Nold, the beautiful young German soprano, has a lovely clean and clear voice and I hope she makes more recordings of this type. Baritone, Thomas Bauer, and the tenor, Marcus Ullmann, are both very good, too.

        Fortepianist, Ulrich Eisenlohr, accompanies the singer on a very attractive sounding fortepiano. I couldn't find any details of the instrument in the cover notes of the CD.

        If you enjoyed the recordings of Schubert's Lieder made by Christoph Prégardien accompanied by Andreas Staier on the fortepiano, then this very cheap and gorgeous Naxos recording.

        My only criticism is that there wasn't a copy of the lyrics to poems and an English translation in the CD notes. However, I am quite content to sit back and be seduced by Schubert's music and the singers and the fortepiano here.

            It's such a natural idea, it could start a whole new trend. With arrangements and accompaniment by Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Carcassés, Selma Reis interprets classic romantic boleros of Cuba through the heart and smoky voice of a Brazilian chanteuse. Reis and Carcassés toss out the lush excesses of the original versions of familiar songs by Beny Moré, Adolfo Guzmán, and others to create a quiet but no less emotionally charged space. Born in the small city of São Goncalo near Rio de Janeiro, Reis recorded her eponymous first album in 1987 after studying vocal techniques in Nantes, France. The Air of Havana dares an unexpected, smoldering rendition of the Miguelito Valdés-Desi Arnaz signature tune "Babalu," which comes off like a whispered invitation to a lover, while Silvio Rodriguez's "Oh, Melancolia" treats us to the ghost of a Judy Garland who circumvented the rainbow altogether. Carcassés's musical direction is as flawless as Reis's voice, and the ambiance carries the stamp of Havana's Egrem Studio, where the Buena Vista Social Club was recorded. --Bob Tarte

            I got the record yesterday and fell in love with it rigth away. The arrengements by Mr.Carcasses are of exquisite taste. The uses of the instrumentation and the percussion are right on de dot (not too much, nor to little) to accentuate Ms. Reis deep and soulful voice. Any lover of Cuban, and specially romantic music will get a real gem with this record. I'm sure we will listen more of Ms. Reis in the years to come.
