5 out of 5 stars Pnau goes POW; fresh sounds from Aussie duo.......2001-04-18

Sambanova begins with Journey Agent, one of the grooviest little tracks I've heard. Pnau delivers song after song, giving us fresh sounds that make your ears wake up. Each song begins its journey with a mellow pace and builds up the action until POW, cool jazzy beats permeate your soul. "Are you free?" Let Pnau set you free.

4 out of 5 stars almost as good as their live shows.......2006-02-19

i've seen pnau perform live in australia about 3 or 4 times - and every time is as good as the last - these are cool, fun guys. i've seen them recover a crowd on the dancefloor after Dimitri from Paris managed to empty it :) this is a great album that *almost* takes you back to their live sets - unfortunely without the energy of the crowd with you. if you haven't had the luck to see them, grab this album. like another reviewer said, not thinking material but sure is funky.

4 out of 5 stars Best (or maybe 2nd Best) Oz Dance CD of All Time.......2005-02-05

I admit - I'm not a huge Australian dance music fan. Most of it is fairly 2nd rate to the grade A stuff that comes out of UK/France... but Pnau's Sambanova will probably turn what you had thought of Oz dance music on its head.

After a pretty scratchy start with Journey Agent - the disc finds its groove with Mellotron and it doesn't let up all the way through. One stand out track is the excellent "Need Your Lovin Baby" - with a cool bass line and hook with the electro vocals repeating the mantra "Need your lovin baby". Sambanova (if you want to classify it) is a disco, groove, funk and jazz sort of CD.

This is also become a bit of a collectors item - get the original version of Sambanova (the one with the Latin girl on the cover). This version of Sambanova was taken off the shelves due to legal problems with a sample - this forced Pnau to re-release Sambanova, but with a couple of tracks taken out and some put in. This CD is ultra-hard to find...

This CD, although almost 6 years old, hasn't dated all that much (unlike its contemporaries).

Definitely recommended - probably the best (or 2nd best if you count the Avalanches) Oz dance CD of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars Rare Stuff.......2001-09-19

Pnau is absolutely out of its class than most contempo in recent times. Sambanova is easy listening materials certainly striking similar chords to acts like Air, (with better depth in the LF department) ironing more funky numbers than of daft punk. A pleasant surprise for the ear buds. Take a listen.

5 out of 5 stars best in OZ.......2001-09-05

Until this album came out, I had always classed Australian electronic music as second rate as compared to the stuff that comes out of England, France and such. Thankfully, this album (to me) represents the moment when Aust electronic music came of age...

People probably think of the big house tracks on this album as defining it. Direct Drive has so much groove that u could not stand still and listen to it, or listen to it with the volume down low. I have it on 12", where Need Your Lovin Baby fades into Dir Drive and it is truly a kickin piece o music. On the flip side of the vinyl (who can actually tell which side should be the b-side) is Journey Agent which is starts off the album, and is pure genius. I really also like the way there are ultra-chill songs on there also. Prepare to fade back into your bean bag when you hear the aptly named The Last Track, or The Red Tapes. There's more chill than a block of cheeba here...

5 out of 5 stars Great Grooves from Australia.......2001-07-21

It's a pity this album is so hard to find in the US - the grooves are fantastic, energetic and unashamedly stylish. The trick is to have a strong bass in your system to capture the heavy backbeats - either that or some great headphones. I listened to nothing but this for a month while travelling, and it's terrific, upbeat music to walk/shop to. And yeah, great background/party music - you're not going to get a life-changing epiphany, so don't expect profundity when you're just looking for a good time.
