Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Listening to this album, or any Culture Shock/Citizen Fish song is an escape into the unknown where boundaries have been destroyed and rule has ceased to be. The singers melodical, aggressive lyrics swim around in the quick guitar riffs, bouncing bass and snapping drum beats. Listening to this band opens your mind to the harsh realities of the present and to the more prevelant future. Be careful when you listen to these guys, you might actually learn something. They've combined wit, wisdom and intelligence with wonderfully brilliant reggae/ska music to give you something more powerful than an enima.

much as Dick of the Subhumans and Citizen Fish loves to tell us of the evolution of man from the fish, this seminal reggae/ska-influenced political punk band is the missing link between the righteous anger of the former, and the more laid back, Douglas Adams-esque perspective of the latter. fully as good as either the subhumans or citizen fish, yet strangely overlooked. must-have for all interested in this category of music.

Hello everybody, listen, this CD is POLISHED black metal, and polished black metal SUCKS, in my opinion it seems all the best black metal cds have had mediocre production, aka: ITNE, dark medieval times, blaze in the northern sky, pentagram, etc. But the cd Onwards to the Spectral Defile, for some damn reason, is GOOD. really good, this is no dark funeral or setherial, that just capitalize on black metal and play it blandly with good production and get popular, Cirith Gorgor manages to play all the stereotypical notes of black metal, but they play those notes in a good enough order so that it doesnt get old. The highlight about this cd is that it is melodic, reminding me occasionaly, if only occasionaly, of the really old in flames. People will say this has 'no originality', and in some ways it doesnt, but they perform with enough melody and talent and violence so that i dont really want anything different. If you're going to buy one cd with constant blast beats, violent singing etc, buy this cd or Marduk, this is intimidating black metal, not artsy or experimental, this is...METAL black metal, it has an effect like versus the world by amon amarth, it pumps you up, partially because of lots of drum rolls and pauses and occasionally understandable lyrics. if you like sargeist, marduk, etc, i recomend this cd. In its way of black metal cirith gorgor is humble, theyre not really crazy looking, theyre not super satanic to get attention, they just play BM for the hell of it, and, with all the amazing early 90's cds already having been made, thats all you can do, and they do it damn well. This will not revolutionize your cd collection, but there are moments on this cd that you will recognize as amazing if you like metal. Having said that, its your call, i like the cd despite its contemporaries :DF, dimmu, setherial etc and all those useless bands, i believe they have tapped into what black metal 'should be', instead of just screaming and blast beats and needley riffs with mediocre melody. These riffs are heavy, the melodies are really good, the blast beats sound awesome every time and the singing is energetic. Its about time this cd was made, some well played, creative, smart, brutal, black metal.

Great War Metal.......2002-07-16

When I first heard this album, it definitely gave me the feel of riding into the front lines of a medieval battle. This is a great effort by Bloodthorn and faster than their first album. All of the songs on here are good, but my favorite by far is 'Day of Reckoning'. I used to give that particular song all kinds of air time on the radio while DJing in Nashville, TN. One of the downsides to this album is that the speed never reaches anything too fast. However, I'm positive this is done in an effort to preserve the mood of the album. The biggest reason I give this album 3 stars and not more is because the production quality could be better. On a number of songs it seems as though everything gets just a bit too much garbled so the clarity is not there to make this a truly phenomenal piece of work. However, fans of the low-fi, old school black metal (ala Emperor's first album) will probably enjoy the lack of production. I DO recommend this to people who are fans or war metal or black metal, though. Onwards into battle, metal brethren!

unlike traditional black metal, this album is centered around melody, guitars and voice. the melody is a mix of guitar and keys while the voice of Krell is snake-like and sinister. and let us not leave out the beautiful female voice that is poeticly incorporated into these songs of masterpiece. the songs themselves are not overly fast with blistering double bass, but are melodic, talented, and very impressive in their own right.

Another classic album from Bloodthorn - this one is much more produced than 'In the shadow of your black wings'. It is faster, and the instruments are played with more technicality. There is also the very interesting use of accoustic guitars and distorted vocal settings. A must for fans of Dimmu Borgir and the like.
