This is one of the best, IF NOT THE BEST, rock groups in the last fifteen years. I never got to see them live in person but have seen numerous videos and regret not seeing them every time I listen to any of their albums or dead low tides albums. Buy any of Murder City Devils albums and you have purchased one of the most under rated rock bands of all time. I only wish that they hadn't of called it quits.........

5 out of 5 stars drunk and angry? you just may fall in love..........2003-12-08

alright - so as the years wear on, i find myself seperating from the punk scene because once 1000 bands all do the same sound, it starts getting really old. i wandered over into the psychobilly/rockabilly arena for a while, sampled some reggae, checked out some of the straight up rock n'roll bands, but nothing revved me up like punk rock did when i was new to the scene until i heard this band for the first time about a month ago. it's been on steady repeat ever since.

fun angry drunk-core punk n'roll with an organ. it's unreal how good this album is. i only wish this band hadn't broken up. i'm eagerly awaiting my next paycheck so i can buy up the rest of MCD's discography.

The best thing outta the NW since the disbanding of the Derelicts, Zipgun and the Mono Men, the Murder City Devils are the darkest, dampest and dirtiest crevices in your mind uncovered. Things that kill, wrench and twist you apart inside, the unhealed knots in your stomach and the demons pounding in your head are amplified and exorcised by MCD's distinct, tight and cohesive rock 'n' roll. Turn out the lights, curl up alone, turn up the stereo and be cleansed.

Album Description

A departure of sorts, the six songs on Thelema find the six-piece exploring musical terrain that is as informed by the obstacles of their past as it is by an ambitious quest for the unconquered. It's a sound that can't be compared to the influences constantly referenced in early reviews of the band. Having served their purpose, those influences and markers have crumbled away and with Thelema The Murder City Devils have honed a vitality and style entirely their own, one that is elastic in structure, profound in its lyrical content, and melodic in tone.

5 out of 5 stars hypnotic.......2003-07-01

i bought Thelema on a whim in a record store in Santa Barbara, as I had heard my friend's MCD tribute band play once, although i didn't pay much attention to the show at the time. I put the 10" vinal on in my dorm room... This is an amazing record, i rank it amongst Radiohead's Kid A and Devo's Freedom of Choice. The most original sound of the late 90's and early 2000's.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-09-13

Why don't you have this gorgeous music? Give me one song on here that is not musical or lyrical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing but howl.......2001-09-11

I've been listening to the devils for several years now, and I must say, like a fine wine, they too get better with time. Not as rock and roll as their earilier releases, this EP is more of a hypnotic descent into madness, a nice direction to travel I must admit. Also featuring 364 Days. If you didn't pick up the Christmas 7" you'll want this regardless.

5 out of 5 stars Up to the ears, up to the neck, it's for the curious..........2001-09-05

Once again the Devils have outdone themselves. This EP literally kicks in the doors, climbs in the windows and mesmerizes the listener with wonderful dark howling and organ sounds for whisky guzzling demons, wandering alone in the night. The Devils are saving your rock and roll soul. Hop on board, leave the road, follow the path, it's midnight at the drowning pond and I'm glad, glad you're here for the midnight service...

It should be mandatory for anyone that watches mtv or likes sum 41 to listen to a murder city record, because its seldom you come across something as azaming as this band and if you cant like it or get into it force yourself to because your probably just lame if you cant find a reason to dig this

5 out of 5 stars Good times had by all.......2004-02-14

Every single moment of this album is pure genius, even the less known songs like "Hey Sailor" and "Stars in her Eyes" are great. The best songs on the album are "I want a lot now" and "Dancing Shoes."

5 out of 5 stars Rock n Roll.......2001-02-19

This is the sequal to Murder City Devils first self titled album, and to say the least this album is great. The Lyrics are a little diffrent then the first album but still seem to blow this album away, there are still keyboards like in the last album but this album is a little more rock n rollish with songs like JohnnyThunders and others. If your a fan of rock n roll and you like keyboards and really great vocals you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Oh man, there's just something about this record.......1999-10-07

A few songs on this album in particular are just absolutely perfect. I Want a Lot Now, Dancin' Shoes, 18 Wheels, Ready For More, Dear Hearts, Stars in Her Eyes. They're just flawless. Hard and unrelenting, but at the same time, really swaggery and epic-seeming. Maybe its the brutal organ tone, maybe its Spencer Moody's warthog-whose-intestines-are-on-fire howl, maybe its their steady slow tempo, but these songs just have so much presence and power. This record really invigorates both rock and punk by adding a swagger to both, and then twisting them in the Devils own way. This album is fantastic!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Everybody's heard about the bird........2005-07-26

The Trashmen were the greatest surf band ever to come out of Minnesota. Nowadays, they are almost exclusively know for their smash hit "Surfin' Bird", although they had a follow up hit with "Bird Dance Beat" that has pretty much been forgotten today. This CD contains 20 of the 22 commercially released tracks that they recorded for Garrett Records. The first 12 tracks here make up their first album, albeit in a different order than the original release. The eight remaining tracks are taken from the five Garrett Records follow up singles to "Surfin' Bird". (The two single sides that were left off here are "Walkin' My Baby" and "Dancing With Santa".) The Trashmen were a good band, but they recorded a few unworthy songs, like the Dick Dale cover "Peppermint Man" and the wimpy Christmas song "Real Live Doll". "Surfin' Bird" showed that they could rock, but they didn't really perform ballads that well. Still, fans of surf music should enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Bring In The Trash.......2005-01-18

What you could say about the Rivingtons, after the Trashmen got through with them, has the delicious irony of being applicable to the Trashmen themselves: Just as the Rivingtons (a snappy West Coast soul outfit) deserve to be known for far more than the two songs ("Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's The Word") which the Trashmen grafted into "Surfin' Bird," the Trashmen deserve to be known for far more than that masterpiece of ripsnorting berserk surf scatology. Which is not to say that "Surfin' Bird" is something to be ashamed of--if you can name the ten most insane in the brain slices of 1960s rock and roll and this isn't among them, you probably can't handle legitimately insane in the brain--but it is to say that the Trashmen were anything but the novelty act they have been branded, unjustifiably, as having been. (Those whose knowledge of the band begins and ends with "Surfin' Bird" could vouch for that if only by way of the two best-remembered covers of the song, in which the Ramones isolated the Trashmen's zip-gun thrash just short of the rubber room, while the Cramps isolated the rubber room just short of the full speed press.)

In fact, these guys were probably one of the best surf-garage bands of their time and maybe a little beyond their time. Remove "Surfin' Bird," and the Trashmen were at once the Ventures without the ersatz polish and sophistication (just try to imagine the Trashmen aspiring to cut guitar-lesson records or get the gig for cutting the theme for "Hawaii Five-O") AND Dick Dale and the Deltones (whose "Miserlou" they damn near beat at its own game) without the overmodulated atmospherics. "Bad News" alone would have secured their reputation if there had been no "Surfin' Bird" on their resume. (A shame that this set omits the almost-"Bad News" clone, "Stick Shift.") Their sense of humour and ability to kid around with themselves never entirely abandoned them (just listen to "Bird Dance Beat," an all-but-"Surfin' Bird" clone on which you can practically feel them straining to keep from cracking up as they play it). And you could line them up amidst any library of vintage surf bands and still experience the shock of realising that this gang of Minnesotans were pretty much meeting and often enough beating the West Coast wave-ravers at their own game, perhaps because their very isolation from the womb of the music made the Trashmen incapable of getting overly pretentious or self-conscious about it.

They weren't exactly perfect ("My Woodie" we could have lived without), but they had it right in the pocket often enough, and it's all--the cream of their post-"Surfin' Bird" singles-- pretty much gathered up here, including their unlikely and insistent version of "Money (That's What I Want)." This was relentless, kick-out-the-jam rock and roll before it became just so much in the way of "the future." The good news: They had a few extra innings in them, as "The Great Lost Album" (and especially the Trashmen's ethereal version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky") has since demonstrated. Completists can make for the "Bird Calls" box-set, but those who want the straight, no-chaser meat and potatoes should stick with this and "The Great Lost Album." Either way, the Trashmen deserve the retroactive respect they've begun to acquire in the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure!.......2004-03-16

The Trashmen hailed from Minnesota and consisted of Steve Wahrer (drums/vocals), Tony Andreason (lead guitar), Dan Winslow (guitar/ vocals) and Bob Reed (bass guitar). Steve Wahrer combined the Rivingtons' songs "The Bird's The Word" and "Papa Oom Mow Mow," added some strange vocal sounds, and created the classic song "Surfin' Bird." That song went all the way to #4 in late 1963. "Bird Dance Beat" came closest to duplicating the sound but not the chart position of their major hit, peaking at #30 in early 1964. The Trashmen took the song "Church Key," changed the words to "Bird Bath," and added the sounds of gurgling and splashing water. "King Of The Surf" takes the main melody of "Johnny B. Goode" and adds surf lyrics to it. "Tube City" is an outstanding surf instrumental written by Steve Wahrer. Unfortunately, the surf craze was dying down and the Trashmen failed to make the top 40 again. By early 1968 the Trashmen had called it quits but, thankfully, they left behind this treasure trove of great songs.

4 out of 5 stars SURFIN BIRD LIVES.......1999-09-02

THIS IS A VERY GOOD CD. THE SOUND QUALITY IS VERY GOOD CONSIDERING THE AGE (EARLY 60'S). SOME GOOD COVERS OF OTHER ARTIST'S SONGS AND SOME GREAT ORIGINAL HITS. A GOOD REALLY GOOD BUY.

4 out of 5 stars Too much more than the Surfin Bird Smash Hit .......2005-10-10

Tons of surf & instrumental music from the early sixties, cool covers of their favourites bands (Buddy Holie, Link Wray,Them)and a surprising evolution in the last year of the band (1966) with incredible cool songs like "Same lines" exploring the new sounds of folk rock like The Byrds, Dylan...Nice price for this sundazed fine release with all the songs this lovely Band recorded.

5 out of 5 stars If you like sixties music, you'll like this band!.......2000-08-14

Zany wacky surf music and instrumentals abound. Kudos to Sundazed for another fine release. I think this includes all of their songs too. One of the finest American Bands of the sixties. Everyone that was alive back then will remember Surfin' Bird. Same Lines sounds like a Dylan tune. They never got the recognition they deserved. Buy it, you'll like it.

In Name and Blood is the third and strongest release yet from the Seattle-based six-piece. While it's not much of a stylistic deviation from previous releases, producer John Agnello gives the whole shebang a bottom-heavier sound. Atop this, front man Spencer Moody does what he does best: holler, holler, and holler some more. Keyboardist Leslie Hardy, a newer addition to the group, adds many Farfisa stabs and squiggles in classic garage-rock style. As the rest of the band holds down the fort, the hits keep on coming. The leadoff track, "Press Gang," sounds monstrous and powerful and, like some of the other anthems on In Name and Blood (especially the cutting "I Drink the Wine"), there's almost a whiff of the lukewarm beer that was probably spilled on the lyric sheets during the album's recording sessions. The grisly, crime-scene theme of the packaging complements the MCD's excellently executed rock. --Jason Josephes

Album Description

On this their third full-length record, The Murder City Devils demonstrate the notion or Rock and Roll as a life or death proposition: tales of love lost (or destroyed), the doomed romanticism of the road (and an innate inability to deny its call), and suffering the slings and arrows of fate (outrageous or otherwise...). "With head, heart and hands - in name and blood." The enhanced CD, contains live video for "Bunkhouse"!

5 out of 5 stars too much too soon.......2005-02-22

This is one of the best, IF NOT THE BEST, rock groups in the last fifteen years. I never got to see them live in person but have seen numerous videos and regret not seeing them every time I listen to any of their albums or dead low tides albums. Buy any of Murder City Devils albums and you have purchased one of the most under rated rock bands of all time. I only wish that they hadn't of called it quits.........

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best All-around Albums in a Long Time.......2004-10-11

Great album start to finish. I only wish I could see them play again.

R.I.P. MCD

5 out of 5 stars Great live and on CD.......2002-12-18

Too late to catch the show. Might as well hear one of the most rocking groups to come out in a while on CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Devils Score again.......2002-01-16

Bright red guitar riffs, monster music organ, killer rhythm section and howling vocals make this another fabulous offering from Seattle's own Murder City Devils. It's too bad they broke up in October of 2001, bands like this don't come around too often.

5 out of 5 stars Swagger Walk Trash Rock.......2001-10-19

This album is one of the greatest in my collection, and I listen to it all the time. It never gets old, and in fact, I like it more all the time. The songs are pure rock and roll, make you want to dance. This band is amazing, pure and simple.

ok this is a pretty good split CD, picked it up at the Tower outlet store for 25 cents. Not bad for 25 cents but I wouldn't pay more than two bucks for it. RCR definitely stronger than Bulemics.

The best thing about the Hives' arrival is that it opened the gates for a slew of equally deserving Swedish bands, like political thrashers International Noise Conspiracy and psychedelic revivalists the Soundtrack of Our Lives. One of the finest of the lot is the Göteborg group Division of Laura Lee, a quartet of skaters whose fidgety debut mixes punk insurrection with hip-shaking garage rock. While sharing with its peers a preoccupation with the '60s, D.O.L.L. goes to great lengths to offer a record that not only sounds thoroughly modern (electronic effects crackle through songs like "Trapped In" and "I Walk on Broken Glass"), but is built on sparkling melodies ("Need to Get Some" and the title track), making it anything but ordinary. --Aidin Vaziri

    Album Description

The anticipated Burning Heart/Epitaph debut release from this new (2002) Swedish group born from the ashes of some of the country's best hardcore travelers. Twelve tight and solid retro-punk tracks rocked with dark atmospherics, lower anatomy rhythms, and a taste of sex. Charismatic, passionate and straight-up soul-sensual. Digipak.

3 out of 5 stars Division Of Laura Lee "Black City".......2004-03-18

"Need To Get Some" (5/5): A really rockin' opener.
"We've Been Planning This..." (5/5): This one keeps you jumpin'.
"Number One" (3/5): This one isn't amazing, but not bad at all.
"Trapped In" (4/5): A slow paced track that works really well.
"Access Identity" (5/5): A great riff drives this winner home.
"I Guess I'm Healed" (4/5): This song keeps the album going.
"The Truth Is F****d" (5/5): Another very powerful tune.
"Black City" (4/5): Nothing bad about this one, just not great.
"I Walk On Broken Glass" (2/5): The first just flat out bad song.
"Second Rule Is" (5/5): One of the best tracks follows the worst.
"Pretty Electric" (3/5): This one isn't memorable, but not bad.
"Wild And Crazy" (2/5): Just dissapointing noise.

    4 out of 5 stars Good songs..........2003-10-19

I wasn't aware of Division of Laura Lee's Swedish citizenship when I first heard their music, and knowing that now makes more sense of their garage-like sound. I was expecting more of a punk-rock sound from this band, seeing as how they share the same label as Pennywise and NOFX. Their sound is pretty rock and roll, but in a more ...Trail of Dead, At the Drive-In way. If you like a heavier rock sound with a more moderate pace and stronger melody and clear vocals, you should like Division of Laura Lee.

5 out of 5 stars DOLL kicks ass!.......2003-06-03

Overall, I think this is one of the greatest rock groups coming up now and I hope they hit it big. Some of my favorite tracks are numbers 3,4,10, and 11. But the whole album is good! BUY IT!
    ...Anyway, buy this!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this now.......2002-12-20

Division of Laura Lee are from Sweden and are therefore part of the 'Swedish Invasion,' but don't think this is a Hives knockoff or a (International) Noise Conspiracy retread. No, DOLL prefer to fuse their punk energy with red-blooded rock 'n' roll, new wave flourishes (in a good way), and in some cases a dark goth mentality.

This combination is sweet and intoxicating, like a perfectly blended screwdriver. Balls out rockers like the opener "Need to Get Some," "Access Identity," "Black City" and "Second Rule Is" rub elbows with ethereal slow-movers like the claustrophobically superb "Trapped In" and "I Walk on Broken Glass," but nothing feels forced or contrived. The rockers move and shake like nothing yet this year, and the slower songs give you a chance to breathe and think for a moment before your head gets rocked again.

This may be a bold statement, but here it is: DOLL are better than the Hives, and I love the Hives. Don't pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars An album worth buying.......2002-12-04

With all of the hype around the Hives, Refused(R.I.P.) and International Noise Conspiracy you may think they were the only Sweeds worth checkin out. But oh how wrong you were. Division of Laura Lee's Black City is a good solid rock album comparible to early Jesus and Mary Chain and Pond. This is a wonderful record from begining to end & I strongly believe this is the best over looked album of 2002. Buy it.
