Customer Reviews:
Awesome compilation of non-typical hits from the 1980's!.......2005-11-30
The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".
There is no doubt that "Mickey" by Toni Basil was a huge hit. There's also no doubt that "Our Lips are Sealed" was a break out hit for the Go Go's, but the Funboy Three version wasn't. But what about "Living in a Box"? It only hit the Billboard top 100 at #89 in 1987. So why is it here? Why are a large number of these songs? They're not top 10 hits, right?
Wrong!
I'm sick to death of so many compilations relying on top 40 hits from the 80's. The U.S. music tastes are typically very different from those of Europe. Just because a song doesn't make the U.S. Billboard top 40 doesn't mean that it isn't a hit in other countries. And although I'm an American, my music tastes have always run more in line with those of Europe.
I'm delighted that the Living in Oblivion series (and the Pop and Wave series) have incorporated a variety of hits from the U.S. and Europe.
I also like that some of the more obscure groups and their songs are available on these compilations. There are several songs on these albums that never were released on CD (as they hadn't come into being at the time of the groups' albums initial releases), so albums such as these are the only place where you can find these hits. The Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" hit the Billboard charts at #12 in 1986, but the group disappeared soon thereafter. Then all of a sudden a dance version of that same song came out in the early 2000's and rocketed up the dance charts.
Don't be misled, the Living in Oblivion series is one of the absolutely best series for a variety of music from the 80's. If you want to hear run of the mill, top 40 only hits from the 80's, well, then you'll just have to look elsewhere.
Also, the liner notes and pictures of the groups included in the jewel box are really clever. You get to find out what the chart position was for the songs in the compilation and see what the groups looked like at the time of the song's release. My only issue with these liner notes is that the author of them seems to be disparaging the very music which these albums are espousing. Apparently many believe that the music from the 80's was vacuous and devoid of emotion. One need only listen to the song "The Promise" by the group "When in Rome" (Living in Oblivion Volume 5) to know that such a statement is false. While that group only had this one hit and then faded into obscurity, "The Promise" made the Billboard Top 100 at #11 and the Billboard Dance Chart at #1.
Anyway... I can't recommend this album and its entire series any more! It's simply awesome! Before believing those who would disparage this series of albums, please check the Billboard charts and you'll see that these songs were in fact hits.
GET IT!
Best of the Living in Oblivion Series.......2004-11-13
I own all five Living In Oblivion discs and this one is the one I listen to the most. Just like all compilations, there are some songs that you can find on just about any '80s retrospective CD, but there are many good songs that are not on those other discs. These songs include the fantastic "It's My Life" by Talk Talk, "Hanging on a Heart Attack" by Device, "Are You Sure" by So, "What Do All the People Know" by The Monroes, and my personal favorite, "Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy.
Every fan of the 1980s will find one disc more to their liking, but chances are that most of you who love 80s music will find several songs on this disc that you will like.
Totally 80's Man.......2004-09-13
Ok, just to make it clear, some people (ahem, some reviewers) clearly don't understand the point of the Living In Oblivion series. So far, in my listening experience, this CD has been the best one yet. With tracks of Single Hit bands and those rare songs that are just downright 80's, L.I.O. delivers a dose of the unique sounds of the eighties, and gives a splash of some of the era's greatest hits. This is what its all about.
Awesome Tracks:
Device - Hanging On a Heart Attack
Talk Talk - It's My Life
EBN-OZN - AEIOU Sometimes Y
So- Are You Sure
ABC- Poison Arrow
Rock On 80's Woo Hoo!
Brilliant from Start to Finish.......2002-04-14
Despite the complaints below, there are great songs here that, in fact, are hard to find elsewhere: AEIOU Sometimes Y, Hanging On a Heart Attack, Sidewalk Talk, Make a Circuit with Me, and Shattered Dreams. And that reviewer assumes that you already have the same discs as he does. Um, OK.
If you valued the 80's, don't buy this compilation.......1999-08-30
You'd think that an 80's anthology of music would understand that it caters to an audience which is nostalgic toward that decade.
I give this two stars only because you can't take away from the 80's music, but I figure that the inane commentary on the CD booklet should be calculated in this rating too. It was highly unnecessary and insulting to 80's fans to include disparaging remarks about the decade and banal political commentary by obvious leftist sympathizers.

A step up from the so-so disc 2.......2004-06-22
As these discs go, #3 is fairly packed with goodies, some you've heard enough to make your bowels move, and some that are pretty cool surprises. Gary Numan's "Cars" kicks things off and sounds a lot better than I remember it sounding. Maybe I'm mellowing. The B-52's "Private Idaho", "What I Like About You" by The Romantics and Squeeze's "Tempted" all fit into the "heard it a million times" category, but since they're all pretty cool songs I decided to give them a pass. The most pleasant surprises on this volume are Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher" and "88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails. Uncovering nuggets like these are what makes this collection fun.
Top Of The Line.......2001-07-07
This and Vol 5 are the best in the series. This is a good reflection of the diversity and talent of many of the 80's best. Many of the bands here had lenghty careers (XTC, Squeeze) while others made the most of thier 15 minutes of fame. How great to hear Visages "Fade To Grey" and Kid Creoles "Stool Pigeon" again. Great c.d., I highly recommend it.
Best of the Series!.......2000-01-05
Unlike the other CDs in this series, every cut is a gem! Well known classics like "Cars", "Private Idaho" and "Teacher, Teacher" are combined with less well known (at least to me) equally great songs like "88 Lines", "Stool Pigeon" and especially "I Live in the City". I own vol 1-7 and 13; this is the best!

Customer Reviews:
One of the better "Mountain Stage" cds.......2006-12-22
There is a nice assortment of artists on this one.
The highlight is "Misguided Angel" by the Cowboy Junkies. The singer's voice is angelic and ethereal. It is an improvement from the already great version on their Trinity Sessions cd.
"Renegade" by Warren Zevon is a stripped down, accoustic version where Zevon's voice is emotional and cracks in all the right places.
Marshall Crenshaw puts more zip into the power pop gem "Cynical Girl" and it is a winner.
Bruce Cockburn's "Waiting on a Miracle" is a wonderful, slow burner with tasty guitar licks all over the place.
I love Alex Chilton's "Guatana Amerika" which is played nice and raw...like a 1960's garage band.
There is a nice variety here and the performances are above average.
Some good live tracks.......2004-07-01
Nice Yo La Tengo track -- "Lewis" from their President Yo La Tengo album
Correction.......2000-11-03
Just to correct the other reviewer, The Fabulous Twister Sisters WAS a joint partnership between violinist/vocalist, Deni Bonet and vocalist/guitarist, Julie Adams, which broke up when Deni left the show a few years ago, to pursue a solo career. I agree about the quality of this record, though, of which the high spot is the chilling duet between Warren Zevon on piano and Deni Bonet on violin
Ecclectic blend of mellow and fun.......1999-12-09
The Twister Sisters is really Julie Adams with a backup band and she is fantastic. A wonderful combo of Emmylou Harris and Sarah MacLachlan sounds. Sarah is on here too, sounding sultry and ethereal. Alex Chilton is stripped down to a trio and offering up something wry and catchy. Martin Crenshaw is his usual playful self. Warren Zevon is not wry or humorous on this one - he does one of those Southener lamenting over the south's loss of the Civil War - and he sounds convincing to me.
I have vol 3 and vol 2. Vol 3 is my favorite out of the two,

Oddball mix, but not without good points.......2003-12-18
On the surface this series sounds like a great idea; stick a bunch of seldom heard '80's prog-rock "hits" that normally would be extremely tough to track down in this format, onto a single disc. Who wouldn't want to hear hard to find Angel City, the Hawks and "Man Behind Meat Loaf" Jim Steinman all gathered in one easy to tote package, right? While that much may be true, it's also safe to say that few would want to hear Pia Zadora mixed in with them. Like the title says, you may have actually heard some of these on the radio, but quite a lot of it has rarely if ever seen the light outside of the cutout bins.

Customer Reviews:
best compilation i own.......2003-05-13
This cd is the best compilation i own. It has a devils brigade song called vampire girl. devils brigade is a psychobilly band which is everyone in rancid except for lars. it also has good tracks from tiger army, lars and the bastards, nekromantix, rancid, distillers, agnostic front, dropkick murphys and some other this compilation is awesome but at the end theres some ska i dont enjoy too much. this cd also contains 2 videos you can watch on your computer. one is dropkick murphys - spicy mchaggis jig and the other is tiger army - cupids victim. this is a very good compilation its well worth 5-6 bucks.i hope they come out with give em the boot 4.
good mix.......2002-12-12
give em the boot 2 had a lot of reggae & ska on it & this one is more punk rock, which is good. the bands on it were really good and i pretty much liked every song (the joe strummer one was kind of weird...not like the clash at all). i would recommend it especially since it's so cheap.
Another in a great series.......2002-09-15
Hellcat Records has turned out another great compilation. I must say that it sounds a little harder, the music a little less melodic and more hardcore. That's just fine by me. The music videos are a nice touch. "The Spicy McHaggis Jig" video is one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time.
Good work, Tim!
Not as good as Give em the boot 2...........2002-05-23
I was excited when I saw that their was a new Give em the boot compilation out, as Give em the boot 2, is one of my favorite cd's ever. Although when I played this cd I was sad to hear that the reggae and ska sounds that where on Give em the boot 2 have been substituted for a straight ahead punk compilation. Not to mention that the quality of songs on this album, are nowhere as good as the tracks selected for the two previous Give em the boot cd's. If you are going to get a Give em the Boot cd, buy the second installment, it is much better...
In a word: Disappointing........2002-04-02
Give 'Em The Boots I and II are punk-rock neccessities. Sprinkled with ska, reggae and rocksteady, they were truly palatable for those of us with eclectic tastes. Sadly, Give 'Em The Boot III purifies itself of most of the reggae and ska from it's two previous outings, leaving us with a punk rock wasteland. The songs here just simply aren't up to Hellcat's high standars. There are a few good moments (The Slackers' BRILLIANT "Information Error", the Tiger Army video) but that is outweighed by a parade of messy and talentless punk rock. Even the Rancid track is anemic.
Although, for [the money], "Give 'Em The Boot III" isn't much of a gamble. Still, it's been three years since Vol. II, and III frankly falls flat on it's body-pierced face.

I agree- "worth the price for Politics of Dancing"
Surprisingly to me the other artists have excellent remix work done for their tracks, most which I haven't heard before. Especially "Catch Me I'm Falling", "Strut", all are worthy of the CD title. This is the best of the series. Treat for the headphones.

Best of Series.......2002-09-10
In my opinion, this is the best of the "Pulsating Grooves" series; full of songs you never wanted to end - worth it for "The Politics of Dancing" alone!

Product Description
By 1963, Berry Gordy and company were fine-tuning Motowns sound. Jumping on the charts were Martha & The Vandellas, with Come And Get These Memories and Heat Wave, signaling the emergence of the writing/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Little Stevie Wonder was No.1 with the record-breaking Fingertips (Part 2). Mary Wells You Lost The Sweetest Boy and Whats Easy For Two Is So Hard For One turned out to be a double-sided hit. The Supremes made their Top 40 chart debut.
This five-CD set captures the hits and the misses during the labels fifth year of existence. It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the high-growth phase of Detroits entertainment juggernaut. Over the course of the sets 119 tracks, you can hear The Chuck-A-Lucks and Jack Haney & Nikiter Armstrong with a couple of Cold War novelties, Martha & The Vandellas following one hit natural disaster Heat Wave with another Quicksand, and an outstanding H-D-H production The Marvelettes Locking Up My Heart that should have been a much bigger hit than it was. Leaving the fold were the Workshop Jazz, Divinity and Miracle labels; new to the company was the V.I.P. imprint.
The set is bound in a scaled-down 78-rpm-era album, with cardboard sleeves to hold each of the discs, and 92 pages of rare photos, detailed annotations and liner notes. It also features a reproduction 45-rpm single from its era; in this case, its Martha & The Vandellas (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave b/w A Love Like Yours (Dont Come Knockin Every Day). Martha Reeves contributes an essay to the set detailing the artists-eye-view of life in the labels early years. Also included is an historical overview by author and scholar Craig Werner, and, as in previous volumes, copious track-by-track annotations researched by noted authors and discographers Bill Dahl and Keith Hughes.

Oglio records was one of the early labels to bring us hard to find new wave 12" singles on compilations, and few labels have managed to keep up with it. Get them before sellers start charging ridiculous prices for them. Only a few disappointments on this volume. Blancmange-why the 7" of Don't Tell Me, and not the 12"? And EBN OZN is not the full 12" version-perhaps it's the album version? Track times on this volume:
1. chamber of hellos (3:55)
2. Numbers with wings (4:40)
3. clean clean (3:52)
4. Yellow pills (4:16)
5. What I like about you (2:55)
6. What does sex mean to me (4:49)
7. Making plans for Nigel (4:11)
8. She talks in stereo (3:58)
9. The fanatic (3:34)
10. Don't tell me (3:30)
11. AEIOU (6:31)
12. Tainted love (8:55)

Do NOT throw away your vinyl singles because of this !!!.......2004-01-01
Made in EU in 2003, Serial# ELVISBOX-103, Playing Time 149:10
Are you a Costello completist? Did you already pick up the first 2 boxes?
Well, this time, we get 11 discs (not 12), and a fair amount of music (2-and-a-half hours) compared to the other 2 sets. This 3rd box completes (or so it seems) the first decade of the singles released by EC. (This one covers from July 1983 to April 1987.)
BUT, there are a few flaws surfacing when looking into greater detail in the material compiled herein:
Disc 4, the "I Wanna Be Loved" single, REPLACES the "radio version" that was released as the A-side of the 12-inch single with the "regular" version which appears on the "Goodbye Cruel World" album;
Disc 8, the "Tokyo Storm Warning" single, OMITS the 6-and-a-half minute version of the track which appeared on the 12-inch version of the single (it combined the 2 parts without interruption).
Also included, as was the case for the other 2 boxes, is a 12-page booklet that gives a track-by-track history (or should I say "context") of each of the singles.
Personnally, I'm getting pretty tired of spending all this money on the various Costello items: first there was the "regular" albums, then the "remastered" version on Rykodisc that included bonus tracks, then the 2-CD "expanded" sets which include TONS of bonus tracks, and now, 3 box sets that only cover the first decade of his career (I bet there will be more to cover the next decades if this sells well!)
And those boxes don't include ALL the tracks from the first decade (when combining the 7-inch, 12-inch and CD formats)... so what's the point?!?
Oh... I get it! You want the record sleeves ?!?
I feel like a philantropist after buying the 3 boxes; if you're not, I would seriously suggest you "invest" roughly the same amount of money in the 2-CD versions of the albums: you don't get ONLY the singles, you get the FULL albums AND lots of music not on these 3 boxes!
Save your money........2003-11-12
Q: How many versions of Everyday I Write the Book does one need? A: Three versions less than are included in this collection. There's a really good reason the "1984 Dance Mix" is only now making its "CD DEBUT" ...it's awful. Costello has already released all the best stuff in this collection at least 3 times. Buy the Rhino or Ryko re-issues instead. Even Amazon tries to clue us in... "This Set is Essential for Collectors who Relish the Fun of Having Everything in the Costello Canon." ...meaning: if you think it's "Fun" to be a completist, you'll "Relish" spending another $50 to stay that way.

This CD has old skasters and a variety of new bands on the ska scene. From Unsteady to Undercover SKA this CD gets you moving. Real ska fans only though, some may not appreciate some of the o.g. ska beats.
