5 out of 5 stars Impeccable English Style.......2007-07-13

If you favor blend, balance, pitch, and all the other parameters of the English traditional choral style, you'll be very impressed with the Tallis Scholars' refined presentation. the music speaks for itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud.......2006-07-27

In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John Dunstable and William Byrd. I personally consider him the second-greatest Renaissance composer after Palestrina, but I'm not dogmatic about it. I love the music of Josquin, Victoria, and Byrd almost as much. Let's just say that, if you're interested in immersing yourself in the work of a single Renaissance composer, you can't do much better than Tallis.

These recordings were made 1985-1998, and they all sound great. Included in this collection are most of Tallis best and best-known works: the two Lamentations of Jeremiah, O Sacrum Convivium, Gaude Gloriosa, Tunes for Archbishop Parker's Psalter (which contains the theme that inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams' famous Fantasia), and the incredible 40-part motet Spem In Alium (which is one of the supreme masterpieces of the 16th century). Unfortunately, there are some notable absences, such as the Tallis Scholars' own recording of O Nata Lux. The Mass for 4 Voices, certainly one of Tallis' major works, is also nowhere to be found. Of course, there's only so much music that will fit onto two CDs, but it's still a shame that they couldn't fit at least one of Tallis' masses. Nevertheless, the music that's here is beautiful and powerful.

The Tallis Scholars themselves need no introduction. They're one of the most famous groups specializing in Renaissance music. It needs to be said, however, that if you're looking for "authentic" recordings (that is, recordings that approximate what the music originally sounded like in the 16th century), you might want to look elsewhere. The Tallis Scholars use female singers instead of boys or (ahem!) castrati (though it's doubtful that Tallis would have used or written for castrati himself). And one could complain that these recordings use too many singers for some of the smaller pieces or that the sopranos overpower some of the larger ones (like Spem In Alium). I'm neither an enthusiast nor an opponent of the authentic-performance movement; since we're listening to recorded music anyway, these issues strike me as moot. The Tallis Scholars are experienced and accomplished singers, and they achieve their primary goal: to provide superlative-sounding recordings of important early choral compositions. If you're looking for a fine compilation of Tallis' music or an excellent introduction to Renaissance music, this is it.

The name Steve Roach has been synonymous with ambient music for years. His latest excursion into late-night musical improvisations explores the purely ethereal side of his signature style without percussion, except for the second track, "Spirit Moves." Even there, the rhythmic propulsion is gentle. The six compositions making up this 74-minute epic have been fashioned from Ebow, electric guitar, and various digital processing gear. Yet, while the instrumental origins of the album are electric and electronic, the end results are organic, as if they were literally streaming forth from the composer's subconscious. As with many Roach recordings, the music twists and weaves in abstract ways, traversing a ghostly path through one's imagination. As an aural narcotic, it is certainly an effective stress-reliever. Although the guitar sounds add a fresher element to Streams & Currents, the album ultimately does not break much new ground in this composer's massive catalog, but Roach's disciples will certainly find much to enjoy while journeying along its shadowy sonic trails. --Bryan Reesman

4 out of 5 stars Not His Best Work, But Worth Having.......2006-07-14

'Streams and Currents' does not compare to 'Dreamtime Return' (1988) or 'On Ritual Ground' (1992) or any of his other, more original works, but it is still worth having. I listened to this album at Silver Platters before I bought it, and read the accompanying notes on the screen. It said that 'Streams and Currents' had no overdubbing, that they were basically recorded on one take, and for that reason alone I was not disappointed. Roach's work is consistent, focused and spontaneous, just the way I like it. I learned today that he is responsible for a MIDI sequence code that other ambient artists use--he really knows what he is doing with his synthesizers. All jargon aside, this album along with his better works are theraputic: I use them to relax, to fall asleep and to meditate. I'm not into vocals during these times, just pure ambience. Anything else included in the background, such as rhythmic home-made drums or the pleasingly bent pitches of his guitar licks are all part of the plan.

'Streams and Currents' is just another delicious flavor of ice cream for the mind. 'Quiet Music' and 'Mystic Chords & Sacred Space' are my two favorite alternate flavors, not counting the must-have 'Dreamtime Return.' I'm planning on getting 'Immersion: One', the first in a planned series of eight discs that are each one track over 70 minutes long of more tantalizing electronic bliss, along with 'Mantram', which I also gave a pre-listening to. Highly preferred over the works he does with Vidna Obmana, which are utterly too dark for my interests. Roach also works well with Michael Stearns and Kevin Braheny ('Desert Solitare,' for instance).

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal Ambient Musique Perfectionado!.......2005-02-03

Steve Roach is the master at ambient and ethereal sounding music. On this album he took basic instruments such as guitars and the such and dostorted and changed notes and made other alterations to create a new world of ethereal beauty. With the exception of my favourite track (the over twenty minute "Spirit Moves") there are no drums. This is the kind of music that will calm, inspire, and project your mind, body, and soul into another dimension of feeling and wonderment. The music will take its time getting to where it's going and it is purely amazing.

    4 out of 5 stars subtle beauty.......2005-01-17

I appreciate the more subtle nature of this cd which is predominantly on tracks 4,5 and 6. When listened to closely, there are truly some beautiful moments on this cd.

    2 out of 5 stars Eh........2003-08-01

Eh. Thats basically my response to this work by Roach. It just didn't do anything for me. Some people really liked this one, but I just found it uninspiring---it just didn't grab me like some of his other albums. The treated guitar sounds were a bit annoying at times. Still you may think it worth having if you're a Roach fan.

5 out of 5 stars Stream and currents to carry your mind and soul.......2002-09-30

Roach's second guitar based work proves that is it not always the equipment or instrumentation that makes the artist or his works. Primarily known as a master of the synthesizer, Roach's guitar worlds flow with just as much emotion and impact as his classic 'Structures from Silence'.

With only one track containing any sense of rhythm, the album is a blissful drift, like the title suggests of gently flowing waters of emotion and currents of meditation.

Upon hearing, some might wonder if it actually is a guitar being used, as the signature Roach sound treatments apply to morph the sound away from any conventional guitar tonality.

    A fantastic late night disc.

      5 out of 5 stars Astonishing music.......2004-06-09

      --Thomas Tallis--
Thomas Tallis, born in 1505, was one of the outstanding liturgical composers of his day, being the acknowledged master of the composers of England from the time of Queen Mary's reign forward. He was a composer and Gentleman of the Chapel Royal during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary, and Elizabeth, and worked closely with many other composers, most particularly William Byrd. He was an organist in addition to composer. He died in 1585, having navigated his way through the tumultuous catholic/protestant difficulties of the church which provided his livelihood and creative outlet.

      --English Anthems--
There are twelve anthems here. Tallis recognised the needs of the newly Protestant clergy, who looked for intelligibility and simplicity in the worship. These anthems were in the vernacular of the people, some of the earliest liturgical anthems in English (as prior to this, the Catholic church celebrated in Latin). However, the compositions here span the time from the young King Edward's reign to the middle of Queen Elizabeth's reign, a time of great shifting of religious foundations and sensibilities.

There are some pieces here for men's voices only - four-part pieces such as 'If ye love me' and 'Here the voice and prayer' are quick famous, and very concise in scope. Other pieces are more elaborate, MATB choirs, and a few very substantial five-voice compositions, 'Christ rising' and 'Blessed are those', the later scored for a standard pre-Reformation choir of treble, mean, countertenor, tenor and bass.

The 'Tunes for Archbishop Parker' consists of eight tunes, two of which may be very familiar - the 'Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis' by Ralph Vaughn Williams comes from this number, as does Tallis' classic 'Canon'.

      --Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is a piece from Hans Holbein the Younger, a portrait of Edward VI as a child, painted in 1538, during Tallis' lifetime.

      --The Tallis Scholars--
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.

Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Thomas Tallis, the namesake of the group, deserves a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is remarkable, both in composition and performance. The original recording was made in 1986.

Fishing more something a bit different? Look no further. We fell for this one hook, line and sinker. (Yeah, we know we abuse clichés, but hey, we sometimes are out of tuna with the times.) This world premiere recording is based on the Mimac legend of a half-fish, half-man creature; the music is a nifty collaboration between jazz, traditional orchestral and the folklore on an indigenous Nova Scotia tribe. (If we are to believe the notes --- if they aren't a fish tale --- the sax solo is 90 percent improvised. Kenny G, go spin your reel!) Romantic, rhythmic and really different.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Randy California (Wolfe) Lives On!.......2006-01-10

Yes, R. California (California name given to him by Hendrix to distinguish between the two Randys in his pre-Experience band) lives on. I'm not much of a reviewer, but I've always been a Spirit fan. A lot of their early music was overlooked, but not even close to their later music. This is a sad shame because there is a massive amount of music released after California's death...and more yet to be released. If you are just rediscovering Spirit, check this cd out. It has a great variety of styles (as was Spirit's way from the very beginning) and it is an enjoyable listen. Did I like it all? No, but I did like the majority of it. I'll leave it to that. I'm no music critic and what little I don't like on a cd, someone else will love. Buy this! You'll enjoy most of it if not all...and the stuff you don't enjoy you'll appreciate!
