5 out of 5 stars back to the old school!.......2005-07-11

I was only 13 years old when I bought this album on vinyl. After 20 years, for the first time on cd, this masterpiece is available again! This is the first album without Melle Mel and Cowboy, so without The Furious Five. Someone said that the magic was ended after the singles the message or white lines, but I don't think so. My prefer tracks are: Rock the house, Alternate groove, Girls love the way he spins and sign of the time.

Album Description

Strut Records hooked up with Grandmaster Flash and asked him to delve deep and faithfully re-create the original days, to play the tunes that actually were played. Flash has got rhythms you haven't even used yet. The result is a real piece of dance music history for anyone remotely into hip-hop. Flash takes us through different aspects of the block parties from the extended freestyle mixes to the tracks he used to play in their entirety. There are even some snippets of original block party tapes and some exclusive interview footage with Flash himself. The deluxe packaging features cover photography from Vincent MacDonald along with a 28-page booklet featuring original photos and memorabilia. A comprehensive Flash history courtesy of Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton is included.

5 out of 5 stars The Grandmaster's biggest Fan!!.......2005-06-13

Hello world, I am GrandMaster Flash's biggest fan. I have gone to almost every one of his parties dating back to 1976 when I was 14 years old. This includes: The Black Door, The Sparkle, The Dixie, The T-Connection, The Disco Fever, The P.A.L.,The Savoy Manor, The outside park jams and I was even at The Audobon Ballroom in 1976 just to name a few. This CD is exactly how Flash used to electrify every one of his parties! He used to change records so fast and go right to the breaks with uncanny precission. The only down side to this CD is that it doesn't come with a video. Yes, it does come with an extremely thorough book " The True Life Adventures of Flash ", and I was very impressed with how candid he allowed himself to be for this book. However, one of the reasons hundreds of people came from all of New York City's borough's to his party's was to see him DJ. Flash was an amazing showman. As I remember at times, he used to use three turntables. When he wanted to show off he would mix and cut behind his back (on time and on beat), with his tongue, his feet and without looking...(sometimes I thought he was a magician). But one of the biggest reasons was how he "fanned the fader" when he mixed,(this is evident in the movie "The Wild Style" when he had a cameo in his kitchen) or when he was mixing, sometimes you literaly did not know what turntable he was mixing from...Amazing! His facial expressions while doing all of this were always serious and said I don't care what other DJ tries to cut this record, I do it much better and faster with more flare and precission! The other notable reason people came from all over to see The GrandMaster, as evident in this CD, was to hear the endless breaks that Flash owned. Not only did he play the breaks that were "commercial" in that era but he oftened gave his fans treats by playing records that were not played by the average or not so average DJ. For example, he would play Earth,Wind and Fire's "Moment of Truth" or Manu Dibango's "Senga" just to name a couple. The only other Djs that would do this at that time were The original Jazzy Jay from the Zulu Nation and at times GrandWizard Theodore, both are my 2nd and 3rd all time favorite djs. These were records that us fans said "Oh yeah, I remember that record." Moreso, Flash was extremely keen,(in my opinion) on how long he played each breakbeat. Some beats were brought in and cut a few times and some were given extended play. In addition to all of this, Flash had the Furious Five mc's rapping over some of these breaks to really get the crowd into a frenzy. I have to say that this CD is for all to hear ( the young and the ones who grew up in my era.) The only other small downside to this CD is that he did'nt give us more of him being at the T-Connection and at the Disco Convention. So all you new and not so new dj's, take note! This is how it was done for real. Amazon, please email me when and or if GrandMaster Flash puts out a book, rare footage video, movie or another turntable mix CD. Still the biggest fan...David Burns.... originally from the Bronx, Peace!

5 out of 5 stars The geneis of True Hip is all here.......2005-03-31

WHoaaaa! The purest from of Hip Hop DJ mixing is right here. I'm 39 years old and I grew up in Philly, so everything he played or mixed on this CD I have heard from a third generation Grandmaster Flash tape or the dozens of neighborhood block parties during 1979-1983. When the Mobile Hip Hop DJ and block parties hit philly, it was the musical highlight of my childhood. The philly DJs - they played this exact music track for track. Philly Djs Cozmic Kev and Jazzy Jeff (prior to Fresh Prince) were without question inspired by Grandmaster Flash.

If you are from Philly, New Jersey or New York, are in your late 30s or early 40s this is for you. This is REAL Hip Hop history. This is the REAL history of looping beats. No gimmicks just 2 turntables a mixer, and plenty of break beats. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, one of the greatest mix albums ever...........2004-02-03

Greatest Mix album Ever???....Along with "Coldcut's - 70 minutes of madness" quite possibly!!....Having had this Cd for a year or two, I revisit it every so often, and the reason why??...is because it pushes the envelope on how far the mix album genre can feasibly be taken...Grandmaster Confidently displays why he's arguably the greatest D.j in the world, through not only his unparalleled"Mixing, Scratching & D.j skills", but also through he's Meticulous Track Selection & knowledge of listener Manipulation.....everything from: Babe Ruth's "The Mexican", Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express", "Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Computer Games" & Eddie & the BBS Orchestra's "Do Want you Gotta Do", are intergrated & invoke such a feeling of Euphoria...that they sound as innovative & fresh as the day of their original releases. The Cd is also carefully peppered with original source material interviews of Grandmaster, detailing his love affair with Djing and highlight influences that helped shape his astonishing career. (all skilfully overlayed with a backing music track, for the era the interviews were first recorded)....Some of the greatness of this album can be lost on the listener that has no reference point for these mixes (i.e. they aren't familiar with the actual music in question), but ANYONE that remembers (or indeed has) ANY of this tracks first time around, should feel obligated to seek this album out, for one of the defining mix albums of the last 10 years.

3 out of 5 stars Short on the Grandmaster Flash flava.......2003-01-05

Comments by Grandmaster Flash are true to form. What is missing is
'MORE' of the music he played (hits and non-hits) from the days he was at various parks in The Bronx. Also,I expected to hear more of Flash 'DOING WORK' with the music selected for this CD by showcasing his God given ability which is unlike no other. If these additions were added you have a '5 star' CD which is what the 'original' cut, mix, and scratch master truly deserved.I do not regret buying this CD but 'Flash' and fans deserve more of his mid 70's Bronx flava.

3 out of 5 stars Liner notes great, but overall a weak collection.......2002-12-08

The liner notes are an excellent look into the story of Joseph Saddler/Grandmaster Flash as well as that of the early days of rap music. It also pulls no punches as to the reasons for Flash's decline. But on the whole, this Cd's actual music collection is weak. Yes, it has some of his scratching techniques and features a few interesting interviews with some popuar New York street jams of the late 70s in the background. But these tunes featured in the mix are late 70s technopop that could easily be found elsewhere. There are two tantalizing snippets of Flash performing live at some street jams in 1979 and 1982, but these are all too brief, lasting for a few seconds apiece after fascinating starts. Perhaps a whole CD of one of Flash's live shows from this period (a'la the Cold Crush Bros. "Live in 82" or "Battle with the Fantastic Five") might be a better idea.

Easily the two most overused words in music criticism are essential and classic. That said, this five-CD box set is all that and a bag of chips to boot. Back in the late 1970s, the small Sugar Hill Records label changed the nature of the rap genre with the music, made with a live band, that they released--and the beats still sound on point today. This box set features tracks from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Sequence, the Sugarhill Gang, the Funky 4 + 1, and the Treacherous 3 (to name just a few) and classic tracks like "The Message," "Freedom," and "Rapper's Delight." In other words, classic, essential party music that still rocks the house. Everybody say ho! --Amy Linden

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good dance music.......1999-10-20

I like to dance on HipHopmusic, so that's why I like these CD'S so much. It's real old stuff of the '80 and the beginning of the '90.

2 out of 5 stars It's a rappers delight!!!.......1999-09-22

This album goes way back to the beginning of rapmusic. Back to the days of broken glas everywhere and casanovo fly. You can't have better than this. The godfathers of rap are in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Classic "Old School" that started the rap movement.......1999-03-17

This box-set is an example of the classic "old school" that started the rap movement back in the early 80s. With 5 CDs of music, there's a lot to sift through. Each disc contains at least three or four essential tunes that clearly define why this music was so groundbreaking (and still is today). You've got all 14 minutes of "Rapper's Delight", two versions of "The Message", and a host of other notably catchy numbers. Even though Sugar Hill didn't invent the rap genre, they were the first to make it popular among the masses. The set also includes a booklet that contains several articles detailing the Sugar Hill story. For anyone who's into "old school" in the strictest sense of the word, then this box set is a must!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent mix, shame about the crowd.......2002-12-18

Do you really want a crowd chanting "the roof is on fire" and making oo oo noises over some of the best music from Salsoul, mixed and presented extremely well in most parts by a legend? No, nor would I. Take the crowd out and you have 5 stars, it makes an excellent mix CD very difficult to appreciate in parts so be warned.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a CD for the old skooler.......2002-11-26

I was more than satisfied with this mix -- brings back memories of the good old days -- Lincoln Park, Hollis, Baisley, etc. -- jammin at night in the summertime (sneaking out the house and getting in trouble afterward). This CD is awesome!! It is a MUST Buy for us 30 and over folks -- remember the hustle?? If you are having an old school party this is defintely a cd you would want to play. My question is When can we expect Salsoul Jam 2001 and 2002??? I am anxiously waiting.

5 out of 5 stars Zain...you are sooooo right..........2002-05-05

... So I went into a discount/used CD store, and I saw this CD. I bought it...

I drove from Dallas, to Austin, to San Antonio...and I think I played this CD in the car practically all of last week. The volume was pumped all the way up, and I just had a ball listening to it. And the recorded, intimate party crowd only enhances the CD. It makes it seem like you are at the party with them.

This is a CD I will treasure always.

Anyone reading this...don't even think about it. Order this CD TODAY!!!

Awwwhhh yeeeah, The legendary Grand Master Flash! He kept his integrity and love for the vibe strong after all these years, geez what a swell guy! The mix and the pumped up crowd had me screaming and clapping along... Caution" DO NOT DRIVE while listening to this, seriously! I loved every moment!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good..........2005-08-01

Well, this one sounds similar to "SRATM" in many ways, with chirps and beeps accenting many of the tracks. I have to disagree with the other reviewer's description of "Sometime Samurai". It doesn't sound at all like a jalopy driving through an exotic marketplace (not even metaphorically). Rather, it is a straightforward pop song, and not a very colorful one compared to some of Towa Tei's other stuff. It's still a catchy song, though. Luckily there are no house tracks on this album (my personal opinion). I really like this CD, and I've listened to it many times, but I just don't feel like it compares well to most of the other stuff he's done. I almost get the impression that he kind of rushed making this album to meet a deadline or something. The track with Arto Lindsay is a little formulaic, with chopped up bossa nova guitar and beats. It could have been a lot better. Unfortunately, Arto Lindsay doesn't even come into the song until about 3 minutes later, after the track sounds like it's ended, but comes back for an encore. He sings about five words and then calls it a day. Overall, this is a good album, but none of the tracks really blew me away. It just sounds as if he didn't put as much effort into it this time.

5 out of 5 stars Flash Card.......2005-06-08

The squeaks and rattles that come out of this sound machine are various enough to fill up an auditorium, and you'd never hear the same thing twice. The shining star here in "Sometime Samurai" which imitates a shuddering jalopy bucking its way through the streets of some Northern African bazaar city, while Kylie Minogue chats gaily in the back seat. It's all girl talk here: "Man of the moment, possibly all time/ Sing to me a lullaby/ Sometime samurai." Possibly the most experimental track that Kylie's recorded in ages (unless the Scissors Sisters collaborations count, and I don't think they do), "Sometime Samurai" has a video to go with it. In this short film, set in San Francisco, Towa Tei enlists the spirit of Barry McGee a/k/a "Twist" the graffiti artist turned gallery king--who has done the cover to the LP and some assorted backup drawings to go along with it.

In the video, a fit pair of graffiti boys wake up early in a neat little squat in an otherwise dingy building, rub the sleep out of their eyes, and drop down off the fire escape with their skateboards, heading downtown to Patrick's the upscale stationery store. Target -- pens and spray paint. All over town the duo spray Kylie's cryptic lyrics over places of business and hoardings South of Market. There are some great "step into liquid" stunts with their boards, but nothing gets in their way of spreading the Towa Tei wisdom around. Look about, you never know where you're going to see them next. They may surprise you by making their home in your head.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, varied, album- worth owning.......2006-11-25

I bought this CD on a gamble and was pleased to find that it's actually pretty good. Jana has a great voice and apparently cowrote (lead credit)11 out of the 16 songs.

There are four instrumentals, #1 "Tana'ke" has some vocals but no lyrics listed in the liner notes (for the quote the English part is based on look under the CD), several pop or pop/dance based tunes, a country tune and even a couple of songs with gospel influence.

I think I especially liked #3 "Survive the Night", and #4 "I'll be with you" but for someone unknown to me Jana Mashonee seems to be a very good singer with a varied style and a lot of creativity. I don't regret buying this CD and think it is worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars "Flash" lingers.......2005-11-10

A debut recording to be proud of, this is a wonderful album that transcends genres to make a fun, soulful, inspirational and vocally impressive listening experience. Her writing is true poetry and this girl can sing.

4 out of 5 stars Jana shines..........2005-06-01

North Carolinian, Jana, has released a much anticipated debut album of original material. Her previous releases were club singles, including a dance remake of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and MTV's DJ Skribble's mix "More Than Life." The singles found popularity in dance clubs and raves across the country and placed the singer on the Billboard dance charts. After enjoying success as the first Native American female on the charts, and winning three NAMMY awards (Native American Music Awards), Jana releases her pop album, "Flash of a Firefly" which incorporates a diverse range of musical influences. With midtempo grooves, love ballads and an eclectic blend of tunes, the album has something for all ages.

On the smooth groove, "Survive the Night," she sings: "Where the Eagle flies, there's a place for us." The catchy song is one of her best. Two gospel influenced songs, "Friend Above," and "One Spirit" showcase the singers soulful vocals and positive lyrics. The songs, "Baby I Love You" and "Don't Go" are timeless tunes of love and are two of the most beautiful songs on the album. With its electric guitar and drumbeats, "From a Tightrope" has a digitized rock sound. Jana sings about the frustrations of living with misery and pain in our society. She also dabs into country with the catchy "Through the Eyes of a Woman."

The one minute techno-ish "Out the Window" and "Gotta Be" are mediocre, filler tracks. Despite those tunes, the Lumbee diva has succeeded in creating an album that should please everyone. Club-goers who are looking for a high-energy techno dance album similar to the singers past releases maybe disappointed, and will just have to wait for the remixes.

5 out of 5 stars BLOW YOUR SUBS TO THIS.......2001-05-30

This is a unique C.D. Nawtboy manages to mix progressive house, Trance and hard house in one set it all goes together perfectly. It is also different because the first disc is mixed and the second disc is unmixed. There are some phat tracks my personal favorite is Justify My Love. This C.d. bangs REAL hard. I love it I would Highly recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Very worthy buy.......2000-07-27

This compilation is slammed down perfectly by Chicago's DJ Naw-T-Boy. For those of you who are New York House fanatics as myself, you will appreciate this compilation, it is up there with many of our hard house compilations. The music is put down hard, and the flavor is almost comparable to that of New York. Chicago definetly has a good taste for house music.

For those of you who are familiar with the Chicago scene, you know your style is up there....by far.

3 out of 5 stars Some of these songs are incomplete.......2002-07-24

This is an obviously bootlegged CD of the early work of the Sugar Hill Gang and Gradmaster Flash from the earliest days of rap. Much of this is not available elsewhere on CD, so that's a plus. In fact, some of these tunes (Rapper's Reprise, Sugar Hill Groove, and Passion Play) are from the 1980 Sugar Hill Gang album, which has never been released on CD in its entirety. The very rare track "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" (c. 1981) which is acknowledged as the first public recording of a DJ mix. Many of the better tunes here, however, are not in complete form.
