5 out of 5 stars Hardly a Cliche..........2007-04-16

Funny, but while much electronic and dub music certainly can become cliche, Adrian Sherwood has managed throughout his career to take both genres in very new directions. The present release is no exception. For those less than impressed with his first solo outing "Never Trust a Hippy" (which took a while to grow on me), "Becoming a Cliche" delivers immediately and magnificiently. The bass lines are more pronounced, with each song delivering a whopping hook carried throughout each track, layered with samples, amazing beats, and trippy keyboards. The addition of vocals is also a plus, with a restrained Lee Perry opening the disc. And for those familiar with the realworld label, there's plenty of world music added to the mix to make this a perfect fit for the catalog. Disc 2 features dub versions (variations, really) of disc 1, plus some extra features. Defintely worth it. For fans of ON-U-Sound or realworld, this disc is a must.

5 out of 5 stars The Almighty Sequoia...Glowing!!!.......2007-02-19

...A piece on the earth...
Sherwood's music identifies itself as the geometric chaos.. So fractal.. So continues... The tracks are arranged in a circular way so that it keeps looping forever as far as your whirling sound system accepts digital muses!
Praising the CD will definitely make it sound as a commercial piece of art while its in reality a work of maturity and innovation regarding the techniques and the musical philosophy involved ...Becoming a Cliché is standing alone surrounded with many other Dub dreams...I can say that the feelings which are "secreted"! while listening are the same as the light reflected inside a falling water drop.. Towards a running blue...blue...river..
...Enjoy sailing...

    5 out of 5 stars Far from a "Cliche".......2005-01-30

When listening to the Umbrella Sequence's "Sparkler Cliche," it's easy to immediately think, "This sounds like Radiohead." Don't let that first impression distract you, because it comes unglued as you listen to the scratchy prettiness of the Minnesota band's first album. It sounds a bit like Radiohead, but not so much that it lacks originality.

An ethereal undercurrent runs through each song -- sometimes it's in the forefront, like in the quietly driving "Athena." In other songs, it's woven into psychedelic pop rhythms. That rare catchiness gets to burst out into the swirling "A Presswood Smile" and the Beatlesesque pop charm of "Water and Repeat."

"Rowboat, one for port and one for starboard,/One for little leaks that watered my eyes way... (too soon)./And you cross the line, renting out paradise," Ryan Rupprecht laments, just before the album ends on a glorious experimental note: the exquisitely spacey, goofy, scratchy, tinkly melody of "The Glass Staircase," which sounds like the best song that Olivia Tremor Control never wrote.

Few bands, on their first album and EP, manage to be as polished and rich-sounding as the Umbrella Sequence. Most of them work years to sound like this, and most of them don't succeed -- especially such a perfect blend of driving rock, catchy pop and experimental.

Every instrument in "Sparkler Cliche" sounds like it's either floating away, or snarling at the listener -- raw guitars and airy synth sit side by side in this album, and complement each other flawlessly. They also complement Ryan Rupprecht's high voice, which sounds a bit like Thom Yorke, but more fragile and a bit more ethereal.

The music itself is almost transcendent, but is rooted down by rain-related song lyrics like "now it rains sad girlfriends/whom I'll betray" and "Ever since February/the roof has been leaking on me/Leaving puddles of sad tones of you." With lyrics like those, it's hard not to feel a little twinge.

The Umbrella Sequence does an outstanding job in its first full-length album, hinting at even more psychedelic rock-pop grandeur to come. "Sparkler" is anything but a cliche.

    3 out of 5 stars good 3 stars.......2004-09-04

in some stores here they present the cd as something like radiohead to sell it. There is a resemblance (more with Muse: "so shine sunshine"), but their music is simpler and without any violence. Anyway it sounds good.
Well i hope you're not sick of the voices of Tom Yorke and Matthew Bellamy...
and look at the sethpage's review!

5 out of 5 stars Stellar New Music.......2004-06-23

This experimental Minnesota four-piece is an amalgamation of some of the ingredients that make Muse and Granddaddy so great. And with influences ranging from The Beatles, to The Smashing Pumpkins, to Boards of Canada, you can rest assured they're diverse as hell. While their music can be instantly inspiring, curiously enough it's full of poignant pretension and self indulgence as well. But that's a good thing, I swear. Everything balances out nicely.

`The Sequence' originally formed in 2002 as a quintet and had a few early gigs under the names "Silas" and "Ship to Shore." Through general word-of-mouth and a great website, the band built a considerable reputation as one of Minneapolis' premiere live acts. Their unbridled energy and emotion then spilled over into the recording process, where the band feverously worked throughout the winter of 2002-03 readying their debut album, "Sparkler Cliché," for a limited March 15th.

Since that time, the band has been busy with a few tricks up their proverbial sleeves. They've played nearly 80 shows, toured the country, signed with a national label, released an EP, shot a music video, and began headlining venues in and around Minneapolis. Not bad for a group of early twenty-something Midwestern hombres who are, essentially, just starting out.

Lastly, `Cliché' is anything but what its title suggests. It's a veritable education in eloquence and expression. This self-produced, self promoted album is a remarkable résumé, a stunning calling card from musicians who will be around for awhile. The fact that the band recently signed with Florida-based label, OHEV Records, insures the masses will have equal opportunity to witness this up and coming powerhouse of musical creativity and cohesion.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Though he uses the luscious framework of traditional bossa nova--steamy rhythms, bittersweet melodies, and soft singing--Brazilian star Vinicius Cantuaria is more subversive than slavish. As on his previous stateside releases, 49-year-old Cantuaria draws upon the modern language of sampling, sound effects, and the mood of dark soundtracks to imbue his forlorn, deeply blue acoustic bossa with an otherworldly quality. A former drummer with Caetano Veloso, Cantuaria seems to enjoy slow-motion fission. His songs float and drift, suspended in space by the slightest effort of his liquid voice and gentle acoustic guitar strumming. Electric guitarists Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell add resonant shades of red and hot pink to the simmering mix, as in the beautiful, hazy version of Jobim's "Ela e Carioca." Also onboard are bassist Marc Johnson, drummers Paulo Braga and Joey Baron, pianist Brad Mehldau, and vocalist Veloso.

"Agua Rasa" is one of the album's many glimmering moments, a soft, undulating melody underlying a tale that sounds utterly familiar and intimate, even if it's in Portuguese. "Ordinaria" uses a street samba groove and the sound of clinking bottles, muted trumpet, and low bass for a kind of desolate, sun-scorched Brazilian epic poem. Cantuaria's guitar unfurls poignantly here as a trumpet cries over rolling brush strokes. It's romantic, yet somehow tragic. "Rio," with David Byrne, is street-smart and sassy, rumbling with frame drum and eerie samples. "Nova de Sete" recalls Jobim, a lovely, fragile song supported by a lonely, lost vocal and Bill Frisell's haunting guitar tones. --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars Sweetly modern Brazilian music.......2007-03-16

From Cantuaria, a Brazilian expatriate living in New York City, comes this modern take on jazz oriented Brasilian pop-esque singer/songwriter material.

Canturia is accompanied by jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, jazz pianist Brad Meldau, and pop music icon David Byrne, among others.

As an added bonus, the liner notes offer English translations of the wonderful Portuguese lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and romantic.......2004-03-26

It's my first Vinicius record... Fascinating, wistful, gorgeous, though it took me some time to perceive all its beauty... All the ecoes, all the subtle harmonies are just mesmerizing. Vinicius' voice gets especially sweet at Ordinaria and Quase Choro, as well as Agua Rasa, duet with Caetano - this song is a real gem, extremely beautiful arrangement - when you listen to it you can see the ocean shore lit by the rising sun, with waves gently lapping against the beach... this is my favourite track :) Track 10, Irapuru, is dark and mysterious, like wind in the Brazilian rainforest... Nova de Sete is lovely and romantic, his voice is wistful as the lonely piano softly cries. Viva Vinicius!!

5 out of 5 stars A true work of art - Buy it now!.......2003-05-13

I found "Vinicius" by listening to him perform on Bill Frisell's "the Intercontinentals" album. This album is beatifully recorded and the arrangements and musicianship expressed through out are both stellar and intelligent. Highly recommended. To put the emotions this album expresses in words just wouldn't do it justice. Although the lyrics aren't in english - they are accessable and the emotional intelligence comes thru - wave after wave. This album is a work of art and will stand the test of time...

    5 out of 5 stars Bossa evolution.......2001-08-04

This music is worth many listenings. Cantuaria's version of "Ela e Carioca" is delicious. He sings in a beautiful, deceptively tranquil voice while the music swirls and shifts around him. His songs sound like classic boss nova in that they often use the same rhythm and subtle, chromatic melodies, but he constantly experiments with instrumentation and newer rhythms. The result is a new branch on the bossa nova tree that sounds as natural and right as the earlier ones. Get all of his CDs and enjoy them, he's the best.

    5 out of 5 stars A fantastic CD.......2001-07-12

I listened to Brasil 2Mil, and from that compilation, I found many different Brazilian musicians that I had not even heard of. All of the purchases have been great - from Suba to Bebel Gilberto to Zuco 103 to Andrea Marquee even.

Vinicius Cantuaria is another successful artists that I first heard on that compilation. His melodies and music is spectacular and smooth - and is perfect for a romantic evening or a quiet walk or drive on the beach, if you are lucky enough to live on the coast. My favorite tracks on the disk are the third, fourth and eigth along with the more festive final track, Caju. I recommend this disk. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for something a bit slow, quiet, subtle and relaxing with terrific musicians and voices.

Wow!! This is like "retrospective meets futuristic"... the first few tracks much like earlier Melotron - very poppy and everything you might expect from the guys - then the mood turns a little darker. The last few tracks have an ambient/experimental flavor, and sound very organic - and in a VERY cool way!! This is definitely one for the collection and recommended for any Melotron-curious buyer. I rank this just under Sternenstaub by a notch (which I gave 5 stars also).

Congrats to the German-synth lads for another well-done release!

5 out of 5 stars The Gorgeous Boundary Between Jazz and New Age.......2000-01-05

Dave Hoffman's FROM ENERGY TO STILLNESS is a rare recording. It has the playful, whimsical and interesting qualities of jazz. It has the ambiance and sheer beauty of better new age recordings. It is easy to dive into and nearly impossible to forget. Hoffman's experience in the music business is shown but not shown off. His solos and jams are controlled and always add to the compositions, yet never boring. This is one to seek high and low for!

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely beautiful album.......1999-01-15

It's hard imagining someone not being swept away by this CD. Daves shows that he is one of the sweetest soloists in the world. Jazz folks love his adventuresome compositions but the New Age folks love the warm sense romanticism.

This is THE album to listen to when your feet are proped on the table while drinking a great glass of wine!! Ppaulpadam@aol.com
