As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

5 out of 5 stars like her all singles..........2003-10-19

Björk made me love singles. Her b-sides and covers
attracts me much in singles.Like all Björk singles ,it is an art work.
maybe ,"Hidden Hlace" is one of the the best song of björk and
I've listened in my whole life..."Foot Soldier" is a nice song
that has the air of homogenic.also "Mother Heroic" is an adorable song too
and, it has the air of "sun in my mouth" from
    "Vespertine".

    5 out of 5 stars beautifulness.......2002-08-23

This is a perfect single. The acapella version of Hidden Place is wonderful. i don't want to say its better than the original, but it definitely is as good as it. the choir is truly amazing, and of course björk is amazing as well. it makes Hidden Place more special to listen to. Mother Heroic is probably the most angelic song by björk i would say. The lyrics are amazing. The celeste is soft and lush, with björk's voice on top, high and airy with tons of emotion and a heavenly melody. I wish it was on vespertine so that more people could hear it. Foot Soldier is a trippy song co-written by mark bell (who also co-wrote pluto). the best part about it is that björk is playing harp!!! but the song itself is great. it seems to get more agressive as it goes along, just angrier as it goes. Then ends mysteriously. it slightly reminds me of Heirloom. so all in all, this is a great buy, and definitely worth your money. maybe it should cost more. definitely one of my favorite björk singles.

    5 out of 5 stars 3 excellent songs.......2001-10-18

I agree with the other reviews about Hidden Place Pt.2. The acapella "Hidden Place" is as great to listen to as the Vespertine version, and really lets you hear the vocals of Bjork & choir. The other 2 songs are as good as anything on Vespertine. If you are a Vespertine fan, you should try to hear this. Much better than Pt.1.

5 out of 5 stars Better than part one!.......2001-08-25

The vocal version of "Hidden Place" is simply breathtaking; without the squishy noises of pudding through straws or card-shuffle beats provided by Matmos on the Edit version (which are by no means bad, either), the lyrics really come through. A real highlight is the whole verse in the middle of the song that was cut out completely from the Edit, in which Bjork sings my favorite lines: "There lies my passion hidden/ there lies my love/ I'll hide it under a blanket/ lull it to sleep." There are also two B-Sides. "Mother Heroic" features a celesta combined with resonant vocals. The final song, "Foot Soldier" is reminescent of two of Bjork's Homogenic-era songs, "Hunter" and "My Snare," with a Vespertine flavor. The lyrics are like "Hunter"'s and the groovy, mellow beat is like "My Snare"'s. This song that starts out mellow , however, quickly crescendos into an all-out war cry: "you go first/ conquer the darkness!" An exellent companion to "Hidden Place pt. One."

    4 out of 5 stars breathtaking!.......2001-08-22

My first introduction to her new round of material, this CD is great. The acappella version of HIDDEN PLACE is just as essential as the original. It is much easier to focus on the beauty of her lyrics and nuances of her voice in this gorgeous song about nurturing a secret love nestled inside, never to be expressed. Both of the nonalbum tracks - the nurturing MOTHER HEROIC and trodding FOOT SOLDIER - are lovely and unique (especially the former). Recommended to intense Björk collectors and some of her newer fans (jumping into her later material).

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great..........2007-07-06

but could have been epic. AFI's music transcends the genre boundaries quite well, and makes for great listening even when stripped down to a string quartet arrangement. Unfortunately Vitamin Records are so quick to capitalize on the band's success that they don't take the time to go over this album and fine tune it to perfection. As noted in the other reviews some of the songs are mislabeled. Further evidence of Vitamin Records' haste at caching in on this can be found in the lax musical arrangements, particularly on The Leaving Song Pt 2 (mislabeled as A Single Second). Although it is one of the standout tracks here one of the most powerful parts of the original song is the bridge, where Jade Pudget's guitar delivers a creepy albeit powerful build up for the final chorus. On the string arrangement the bridge is simply alright, and all four instruments play the exact same notes instead of the complex buildup featured on the original version. This problem plagues a lot of the album, the bridge on Girls Not Grey is less than stellar as well, the cello and viola take up too much space when the violins (lead guitar and vocals) should be more prominently featured.
Don't get me wrong, this album is amazing, and I love it, but it just urks me that it's not the epic that it could be. When you listen to Apocolyptica you know that they are truly feeling the music when they play Metallica, listening to this you can tell that these musicians are just playing some sheet music to pay the rent.

    4 out of 5 stars A Change of Mood.......2005-10-26

Well, I think this is a great CD - I love punk as much as the next man (Bad Religion, Pennywise, AFI, Strung Out etc) but even I sometimes want to relax and not jump around the room like an idiot. I found "Punk Goes Acoustic" a nice way to listen to great songs in a more mellow style, and this string quartet cd also does that perfectly. Definitely worth getting, or even buying for your mum for xmas.....

5 out of 5 stars Great music that really makes you appriciate AFI.......2004-11-26

This album really shows off AFI's songwriting talents because it strips down the melodies to classical instruments, and it is performed beautifully. A must for any AFI fan or Classical, almost Opera-esque listener

4 out of 5 stars Good, but what's with the titles?.......2004-09-08

If you like string music and you like AFI, you should certainly enjoy this. However, someone at Vitamin (the record company) apparently wasn't checking their facts - the entire track list is mislabled terribly except for two songs, and the label mishap apparently carried on over to Amazon.com. I've corrected the track list here:

    1. Death of Seasons
    2. Girl's Not Grey
    3. File 13
    4. The Leaving Song Pt. 2
    5. Lower Your Head And Take It In The Body
    6. The Nephilim
    7. I Wanna Mohawk (But Mom Won't Let Me Get One)
    8. This Celluloid Dream
    9. Exsanguination
    10. Weathered Tome
    11. At A Glance
    12. Of Greetings and Goodbyes
    13. Catch A Hot One
    14. A Single Second

"The Last Kiss" isn't even on the album, but I think they got thrown off by the title switch on the packaging of Black Sails in the Sunset (where "Weathered Tome" and "The Last Kiss" were switched). Still, all in all, an excellent translation of their music into string music and a fairly varied selection from their albums.

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2004-07-20

It is 1000000% better then the other tribute cd. I really enjoy this. Must have for AFI and Orchestra fans.

4 out of 5 stars Bjork - Big Time Sensuality Pt. 2.......2003-07-15

This is an interesting EP from Bjork. It features seven mixes of the Debut track "Big Time Sensuality," which all present a different angle on the song.

    1. Fluke Minimix - This is the song for which I bought this EP, and it doesn't disappoint with its deep bass and trippy arrangement.

    2. Dom T. Big Time Club Mix - An alright track that could have been a bit more creative, but it doesn't quite wear out its welcome.

    3. Justin Robertson Wigout Vox - Has an interesting texture with a lot of clashing elements. Well worth hearing.

    4. Morales Radio Mix - Reminiscent of late 80's electronic music. A good version of the song.

    5. Fluke Magimix - Basically the Fluke Minimix sped up really fast. It is interesting, especially how the remixer chose to present slightly altered versions of their work.

    6. Justin Robertson Prankster's Joyride - Sounds a bit like a sped-up version of the Wigout Vox, but features different samples and beat arrangement.

    7. Fluke Moulimix - A slowed-down cross between the Mini and Magi mixes. Sort of the final product, if the first two mixes in the series were the prototypes.

All in all, it was an enjoyable EP. Not perfect, but enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANCE!.......2002-03-18

This is a fabulous Björk song, which is of course, classic, and this single is a must buy for any fans or anyone who loves to dance. All of the remixes here are brilliant and never bore you for a second.

        5 out of 5 stars !.......2003-02-23

This CD is part two in the set of singles for the remarkabley great song "I Miss You". It contains Pt. 2 of the equally great Dobie remixes for the title track, as well as the "Ø" mix for "Headphones" which is quite subtle and awesome. (it appeared on the post remix compilation "Telegram".) As well, it has yet another cool techno remix for Hyperballad and a mindblowingly classic and good version of "Violently Happy" live:)
        So buy this and enjoy!:-)

        4 out of 5 stars Whoah-ho!! They've re-released it!!.......2002-01-11

The "I Miss You" singles parts 1 & 2 were limited to 2,000 copies initially. This is a quality Björk remix single. No nonalbum tracks here. It is MOST essential for the live version of Violently Happy which, to my knowledge, isn't available on ANYTHING else. You'll probably *have* to have it if you love the same rawness of the Australian acoustic recordings of "Come to Me" and "Human Behavior" a few years ago ... except, of course, Violenty Happy in all of its concert distortion here is pretty intense! If you enjoy Trevor Morais' percussive work you may enjoy it, too. Oh, the other tracks? I MISS YOU - DOBIE PART 1 is "pleasantly" hiphop and more accessible than the original, slowing down the tempo of the song and trims the tune of its eclectic idiosyncracies. The LFO (Mark Bell) HYPERBALLAD remix is average but not essential in my collection, already commonly available, no doubt, on some of the million various Hyperballad singles (eh heh). HEADPHONES - MIKA VAINIO remix is smashing ... starkly crystal ambience and a Björk essential, also available on Telegram. Recommended to collectors!

5 out of 5 stars Gutsy Rendition of Venus as a Boy.......1999-01-26

Yes, I am slightly biased and would probably give all of Bjork's work 5 stars. I've never felt compelled to share an opinion before, however, until I heard the more raw sound present on this cut of Venus As A Boy.

It almost has a slight reggae feel to it, with a simple driving, real drum rhythm rolling along throughout, and a less "produced" sound than the original CD cut. The unique sound shading manages to create a "live" sound.

When I played it to my skeptical friend, he asked for details about how to procure the CD single. I believe that Bjork always hits the nail on the head. This time, she again does it, simply, sweetly and with oomph.

        5 out of 5 stars a gem..........2003-10-19

Well, the song 'Pagan Poetry' is impressive especially
the vocals on last part. Also ,when I first listened the song
'Domestica' I was charmed.I've listened over and over and i've
not been sated ,yet. The other track 'Batabit'is another
gem in this record. As the oher Bjork singles it is
will be an unique piece for collectors.

        5 out of 5 stars Great things..........2003-02-26

This single is my favorite out of all the Björk singles that I own. The b-sides on this single reach out and grab you, I can't believe I hadn't heard domestica before. I started to play and I was wondering myself "where did I put my keys...they're not in my pocket." Some of the things that Björk does can be described by no other means than cute. Domestica holds a very cute moment in Björk's recording career. Buy this you will not be disappointed.
By the way Batabid is a very relaxing instrumental makes you wonder why Björk left Mark Bell from the homogenic days. Very good.

5 out of 5 stars This be GOOD.......2002-12-28

The Overpoweringly delicious track "Batabid" and the more than cute "Domestica make it all worthwhile. It's cheap, too. So, any of you Björk fans that are a little cautious at buying this, GO AHEAD! IT's sure to make you feel all warm & fuzzy inside.

5 out of 5 stars Buy, buy, buy!!!.......2002-04-30

Pagan Poetry is fantastic, Domestica is CUTE and Batabid is beautiful. What more do you need to know? BUY NOW!

1 out of 5 stars 1.6 -UNBELIEVABLE mark of underachievement coming from Björk.......2002-03-09

I own about 60 Björk/related CDs including all of her single-released nonalbum tracks. I have raw bootleg cuts of Björk singing in grade school, icelandic carols, and old Sugarcubes demo covers -- you get my point. (With the exception of her tiny bits on Tricky's "Nearly God" album), "Domestika" and "Batabid" on this single are the most NONessential Björkisms in my collection yet. DOMESTIKA is a too easily-constructed, repetitive jingle featuring Björk capriciously singing "Oh, where I'd put my keys?!" over and over again. The old "My Spine" spontaneously created with Evelyn Glennie a few years ago was of infinitely better composition, if that is any indication. BATABID is an instrumental quickie (again, pure repetition of a few simple notes). It's the first of all her instrumental pieces I've dismissed as a complete throw away. Is this single a joke? I was surprised because quite frankly I'm used to hearing very high quality in all her b-sides. Björk spent a little too much time worrying about how to flaunt her nudity and choose the angle for belly-piercing in her latest video than working on extra music to make a 'pagan poetry-part two' single release justifiable. I give it 0.6 stars above 'poor' because her voice would sound good reading the dictionary! Not everything she releases is golden. A sad waste of plastic.
