About the Artist
Mexican Weed Dub is the first in a 5-album series produced by Johnny Horn and his new incarnation: The Militant Rhythm Section on PureFire Records. In its entirety, the series celebrates the art of dub music embracing elements of soul and reggae while pushing further into the future of both.
Although many people associate the multi-faceted Johnny Horn to the genres of soul and R&B (Hi-Fi Killers, Junior Jackson), Horn has also made several contributions to the world of Reggae and Dub. He has produced songs for such artists as Capleton, Gregory Isaacs and Ras Shiloh and has worked along side such legendary engineers as Stanley "Barnabus" Bryan, Anthony "Solgie" Hamilton and Overton "Scientist" Brown. He has also collaborated with the immortal Upsetters as well as The Prophets, The Revolutionaries, The Professionals and The Gladiators. His last full-length dub project with the Hi-Fi Killers, "Jamaica" (on Loosegroove Records), received National and International attention.
Horn has taken these experiences and influences to fine tune his approach to this and other projects: "Too many guys want to go in the studio and mix a dub, but they forgot to build a good rhythm track to mix...the baseline, the heavy drum beat, the details, the song and melody, they have to be in dub too..." - Johnny Horn (London 05).
The Militant Rhythm Section is just the latest chapter for Horn: a permanent fixture in the Seattle music community. Aside from producing and performing, the journeyman DJ manages to find time to host his own show (Preachin The Blues on 90.3 KEXP), guest host for the popular Positive Vibes (also on 90.3), and holds a spot in rotation at Wicked & Wild with DJ Soul One (the longest running reggae/dancehall club night in Seattle which he is the founding member). There will undoubtedly be more to come.
