5 out of 5 stars One Of His Best.......2003-06-07

If one can get past the laughably bad Star Wars opening track, this album is a stunner. Though lacking the fluid continuity of his previous efforts, Tomita manages to select darker, more beautiful, and more moody pieces than before, creating an incredible dream-like atmosphere without resorting to the usual space-ship and "alien" sounds that tarnished The Planets and The Bermuda Triangle. His sound became larger, more ambient, and denser. The final Bach medley "The Sea Named Solaris" is Tomita's finest hour, and this album is a must for any fan or Tomita's work, or of electronic music. A flawed but still great work.

5 out of 5 stars Complete list of Tomita's classical albums..........2002-03-05

This CD is fantastic, but a big box set of every classical Tomita album would be even better. Most of the CDs out of print for years are absolutely fantastic. Four of his albums would fit two on one CD. Here's the complete list...

Snowflakes Are Dancing 1974 (11 Debussy pieces) The newly remastered CD is an audiophile recording, adds Prelude To The Afternoon of a Faun and is available for a good price.

Pictures At An Exhibition 1975 (Mussorgsky)

Firebird 1976 (Stravinsky: Firebird. Debussy: Prelude To The Afternoon of A Faun. Mussorgsky: Night On Bald Mountain)

The Planets 1976 (Holst)

Kosmos 1978 (Star Wars Title. Space Fantasy- R. Strauss: 2001 Title, Wagner: Ride of The Valkyries and Tannhauser Overture. Honnegar: Pacific 231. Ives: Unanswered Question. Rodrigo: Aranjuez. Grieg: Solveig's Song. Dinicu-Heifetz: Hora Staccato. Bach-Tomita: The Sea Named Solaris)

The Bermuda Triangle 1979 (Sibelius: Valse Triste. And excerpts from... Williams: Close Encounters. Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet, Scythian Suite, Symphonies 5 and 6, Violin Concerto 1. My favorite electronic CD.)

Bolero 1980 (Ravel: Daphis and Chloe. Pavane for A Dead Princess. Bolero. Mother Goose Suite)

The Grand Canyon 1982 (Grofe)

Canon of The Three Stars 1984 (Pachelbel: Canon. Rachmaninoff: Vocalise. Albinoni: Adagio. Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring. 4 pieces from Villa Lobos: Bachianis Brasileiras 2, 4, and 7)

Live At Linz, Austria 1985 (With speakers on both sides of the Danube River and live soloists. Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring. Japanese Traditional: Cranes In Their Nest. Vaughn Williams: The Lark Ascending. Wagner: Tristan Und Isolde-Liebestod. Beethoven: Ode To Joy with full Choir.)

Live In New York 1988 (Includes 7 pieces from previous albums plus Dukas: Fanfare. Mahler: Symphony 3 in D Minor - 5th Movement. Traditional: Chinese War Lord Going Home. Gershwin: Rhapsody In Blue. Fisher-Dvorak: Goin' Home. My favorite live concert CDs.)

4 out of 5 stars electronic instruments, very good selections,.......1999-05-29

I have this album in vinyl, should be better without background hiss. Star Wars theme is quite interesting, lovers of "the force" should be impressed. Worth every dime.

      Album Description

"There was a definite buzz of excited anticipation in the air as Mr. Banerjee took the stage lit by an enormous light-show projection. He began the performance with Manomanjari, a raga of his own design which he magnificently rendered with a sense of joyous heroism and virility. He concluded with a charmingly romantic rendition of Sindhu Khamaj, 'raga-mala' fashion, sprinkled with tastes of Hamir, Hindol, Hindoli and, finally, Hansadhwani. Fortunately, Felix van Lamsweerde, from the Royal Tropen Museum, was able to capture this remarkable music on tape and allowed Raga Records to bring it to you. So enjoy!" -- Ira Landgarten

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2000-10-10

Nikhil Banerjee is not only the greatest sitarist of his generation but of any generation. This CD will testify to the fact that this is the music of a sublime genius.

5 out of 5 stars To hear TRUE sitar playing, get this disc.......1999-05-28

This is a recording from an Amsterdam concert in the early 70's that happened by chance. thankfully, it ocurred though and someone had the idea and the means to record it. This concert recording will go down as one of THE sitar recordings of this generation of players. Pandit Banerjee (who unfortunately is no longer living) was an incredibly unassuming man dedicated to his art. His passion for the sitar and unpretentious nature shine through in these recordings. In particular, the Khamaj-based piece is what enlightened me to the beauty of this music. Before I was only aware of Ravi Shankar, and I picked up a Pandit Banerjee disc by chance. Thankfully this was the case, because he is one of the masters, and in my opinion, the finest sitar player that has ever been recorded. His guru, Ustad Baba Allaudin Khan of the Maihar gharana taught Pt. Banerjee in a manner different than that of his other students (Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan to name a few!), and this difference is obvious. Nikhilji's tone and style is light years from (and in my opinion beyond) other sitarists. For a unique genius, pick up this CD. I know 70+ minute ragas is a lot to digest, but it will send your head spinning in its purity of sound.

5 out of 5 stars This is a band to watch. Great record........1999-05-08

I've heard about Kosmos Express through various circles. They're not a Christian band as some have said. It's like U2, some of the guys in the band are Christians, but they're also Beatle fans. I loved their first record, "NOW" and I love "Simulcast," especially songs: "The Force" "Gone" "In My Face" and "On Top of the World." The lead singer writes lyrics that make you think (it's refreshing) and music you'll remember (not every song sounds the same). The only band thing about this band is they often wear their influences on their sleeve, although they're very original in their own right. Comparisions would be: The Jam, Oasis, Blur, Elvis Costello, Beatles, The Who, Weezer, Nirvana. Hope to find them live somewhere. Heard a friend in Atlanta saw them and said they were unbelievablely great live. I recommend this record. Not sure why the Alaska review was so harsh. Apparently, he didn't get it. To each his own. GREAT RECORD. GREAT BAND.

4 out of 5 stars Maximum Brit-pop rock and roll for your gray matter........1999-05-07

This album was a refreshing surprise to the blandness that I usually associate with artists in Christian music. Rob Goraieb and Kosmos lead you into a distortion ride into some familiar territory, but taking a route that is distinctly their own.

I would recommend this disc, as well as "Now" (their previous release on Sublime Records) as a must-listen to anyone who loves a hard rockin' soundtrack to their faith.

4 out of 5 stars Great (though short) album.......1999-05-03

Well, in my opinion this is one of the best "christian" CD'S (although I don't know if something like this exists) I bought last year. The music has in places some similarities to bands like Oasis or Blur but I wouldn' call it a copy of that bands. There is plenty of musical identity of its own and you can't blame them for listening to the Beatles. Also the lyrics (though you have to think about them and have to come to your own interpretation sometimes) are refreshing because they don't follow the formula of how a "christian" song has to be. "I'm in love with Jesus Christ but I'm not selling Him" says it all. Maybe this could be a reason to think about and question the "christian" music industry. Though the album is a bit short it is still worthy because every song is really good. I recommed this album to everyone who is looking for great music. If you are looking for certain lyrics it might not be your cup of tea.

2 out of 5 stars An experiment gone awry.......1999-04-08

I bought this CD as a test, just to see what it would be like. It is supposedly Christian CD, but, reading the lyrics, I didn't see very many even remote references to Christ, God, or Christian themes. Also, the music was mediocre and lyrics were repetitive. Unless you like to be disappointed, steer clear of this album. It's not worth your while. I give it two stars because 1 star just has to really be terrible.

Despite its sounds--the completely synthetic blips and bleeps of cheesy Kraftwerk wannabes--the debut English-language release by Sweden's Doktor Kosmos is in essence a folk record. Just as old-time guitar pickers copped stock melodies, lyrics, and chord progressions, expressing themselves through adaptation, the good Doktor uses the generic, public domain accompaniments of the electronic age. With pushbutton convenience, Kosmos (one-time keyboardist for Stockholm's Komeda) conjures the preset beats and rhythms of commercial synths on which he sings his own new songs.

For those who demand blood and guts songwriting, the plastic ditties on Cocktail will sound frustratingly shallow and simplistic. That anyone with a $100 Casio and a few fingers is more than halfway toward replicating Doktor Kosmos' sound certainly puts his music in suspicion. Yet it's hard to label Kosmos a charlatan, if only because his music can make the listener laugh out loud. There's a conceptual brilliance at work in his one-touch minimalism, both parodying and emulating early techno/synth-pop, whenever, like an ineffectual, overintellectual Eurotrash noodler (think Saturday Night Live's Mike Myers as Dieter), he mechanically deadpans the ever-concise lyrics to "Elevator Bossa": "A boy and a girl/Fell in love in the elevator/Two months later/He hate her."

Then, with the Ping-Pong ball driven "L.S.A.T.T. (Lazy Sunday Afternoon Table-Tennis)" and "No One at Home," which constructs a '90s cosmopolitan rag around unanswered telephone rings, doorbells and knocks, Kosmos gets really subversive. He offers his machine-age laziness as avant garde composition, and with a barely hidden snicker, juxtaposes artiness with frivolity and cold digital complexity with cocktail stupidity. Where Berlin meets Miami Beach, Bauhaus meets Art Deco, and ambient techno DJ'ing meets organ grinder monkeybusiness, Doktor Kosmos has produced a guilty pleasure worthy of indulgence. --Roni Sarig

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Funk Off ;D.......2004-11-13

This is an awesome cd. I recommend it to any cool people out there, especially if you are into rap, porn, techno, look forward ( and don't look at photographs ) and holidays. You may recognize 'Holiday' from an episode of One Tree Hill, but don't stop there! There is much more to this cd. Such as the song 'Goodnight,' which is perfect to sing to little ones just before they go to sleep. 'Funk Off' is also a very mind-blowing techno-y masterpiece. Listen to it. Listen to it now.

3 out of 5 stars Fun gets no simpler.......2000-04-08

Add explicit titles and sometimes themes to MIDI Casio demos and you've got a superficial taste of DK. To dismiss the album as such ignores the joys of their inanity. For as trivial as the tracks are, they are reasonably well-constructed. I must still complain, however, of its slight length. This is a fine novelty, but I can think of no reason to choose it over established names in electronica. Funk off is amusing, though. tee hee!

5 out of 5 stars Valensia, sheer genius.......2002-03-14

I bought this CD on import, nothing strange you would say, wasn't it for the case that Valensia is actually a dutchmen, like me, but only has success in the Asian countries (japan mainly). Kind of strange, because K.O.S.M.O.S is really really good, Valensia has the artistic ability of being a great composer as well as a great musician. He does it all. The personal highlights for me on this album were: Thunderbolt, The Barely Acceptable Truth Of Knowing, The Cassiopeian and Bleeding.

Naming just these few songs doesn't mean the other songs are bad, every single song on the album is a gem.

For the people who liked Gaia (his world wide hit) I would highly recommend this album.

        5 out of 5 stars Valensia's second album.......2000-05-27

Dutch singer Valensia's debut album was one of the big things for me in the 90's, and I still think it's one of the best debut albums ever. This second album didn't blow my mind the same way the first one did. It's not less good in any way, it just doesn't have the same charm of novelty. There are a lot of emotional melodies and lush arrangements on this album. Valensia's never afraid of sounding sentimental or bombastic. He sings with a high and beautiful voice. When I first heard him, I thought he was a girl. There are some very energetic songs (Thunderbold), beautiful power ballads (The Barely Acceptable Truth of Knowing II), a waltz (Kosmos)... Some people have criticized Valensia for plagiarizing his idols Queen, Kate Bush and The Beatles. Sure it's easy to hear that he's influenced by those artists but the way he combines his influences is certainly original. A good example of this is "Blasphemian Charlatan" in which he combines a Kate Bush kind of melody, Queen kind of harmonies and some kind of reggae accompaniment. At the moment Valensia's one of the most interesting rock artists in the world. Unfortunately he's almost unknown in Europe and America, and tours mostly in Japan. So it's unlikely that I would see him live in concert very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD with variation! Simply perfect!.......1999-07-27

Kosmos is a great CD with a variety of songs. In my opinion Blasphemian Charlatan, Thunderbolt & Chique, Mystique & Excentrique are the best. Chique, Mystique & Excentrique is a song about himself. Pronounced like French, Valensia says: Singing in Falcet doesn't confirm ones gender, and textile's no criminale!. And that is exactly what makes Valensia so unique. He dares to be himself!

Hope you can find out the secret messages in the CD?

In fact you should listen to the CD yourself. You won't regret it!
