Album Description

There'd be no Nirvana, Beastie Boys, or Red Hot Chili Peppers were it not for hardcore pioneers such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, and Minor Threat. Hardcore was more than music; it was a social movement created by Reagan-era misfit kids. Featuring twenty-six definitive tracks, this is the audio companion to the feature-length documentary, released by Sony Pictures Classics in September 2006. Artists include Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Circle Jerks, Cro-Mags, Adolescents, Die Kreuzen, Flipper, Gang Green, Negative Approach, DOA, MDC, DRI, and more.

HARDCORE RECOMMENDED!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesomeness.......2007-05-26

Bought super saving shipping and arrived a day before it was supposed to, thanks!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Cliff Notes, But A Lot Missing.......2007-05-12

Excellent CD & DVD, but it was far too brief to really encapsulate what hard core was really all about. How can a CD like this be put out without the Dead Kennedy's? I'm sure it's not the filmmakers fault, but why bother? A really good starting point for people who vaguely remember the hard core movement or want to understand it better. I just hope the little tweeners of today avoid it altogether and don't try to adopt (read: bastardize) it as something of thier own.

5 out of 5 stars awsome sound track.......2007-03-17

this soundtrack is great it has some very rare tracks on hear such as ydi enemy for life, middle class out of vogue and other killer hardcore anthems from bands like minor threat, void, bad brains.this is ah good cd for people wanting to learn about real hardcore or to get in to this type of music. AND GO BUY THE MOVIE NOW!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars history in the making.......2007-01-18

I really like this soundtrack because it's rare to find so many of the trailblazing hardcore bands of the early '80s all in one place. Some of these tracks were previously very rare, at least on CD. In particular, the Middle Class' "Out of Vogue" alone, to me, is worth the price of admission. It's barely a minute long but it has the distinction of being (arguably) the first ever hardcore single. And of course, alongside some of the more obscure bands, the "big three" of first wave hardcore (Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains) are represented here. If you haven't heard these bands yet, you owe it to yourself to check this out. All in all, this CD a great introduction to what hardcore is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Steppin his gam up! .......2007-04-05

Dirty History is an awesome album and a big step up from Hatchet Warrior, which was still decent in it's own right. For me the highlight of this album is Hey Ya'll. I can't even begin to tell you all how big of an ROC fan I am and his production absolutely shines on that track. Down Here, Bombs On You, Trees And Woods, Retaliate, Party At The Liquor Store, and Put My Life On It are all awesome songs. The only ones on here I didn't care much for were Nevahoe and Charlie Brown. Definetly pick this up if your into Psychopathic.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-04-13

This album is a huge step-up from "Hatchet Warrior", in my opinion. That was a really good album aswell, but this is an awesome album. ABK can actually sing really well also. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this album to all juggalos!

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Attack With Dirty History.......2005-10-28

This is ABK's second album as the Killa....I'd say hes improved in some ways....Beats arent that much imroved but with less psy guests it makes it a more personal album for him....which I like.....well lets get to it. Tracks:

1. Intro-1/5 I think this intro is a little more interesting for it sets a story that this wicked album was found under an old staircase....sounds like a good suspense story....but its just an intro
2. Bombs on You-3.5/5 yes its a good track, short, but sick.....I enjoyed it more after seeing it live....but its basically the short track that introduces himself on the album
3. Stick and Move-5/5 Wicked track although its more talk about the industry.....instead of stickin fools.....but badass none the less....good mosh pit song......
4. Down Here-4/5(featuring Violent J) I picture a party goin down in the sewers while J and ABK spit about the freaks n geeks lurkin in the depths below ya home.....I like the chorus a lot....lyrics are pretty decent
5. Gimme ah Beat-5/5 I think this songs killer....all he needs is this beatbox beat and he can kick it wild.....lyrics are tough with the one little two little holes in the back of ya dome....awesome song...the guy that danced to this at GOTJ was nuts
6. Party at the Liquor Store(Featuring Blaze Ya Dead Homie)-3/5 Great tone for party time....I can relate but the track just doesnt stand out that much for me....the chorus isnt that great...but good to listen to their crazy times
7. Hey Ya'll-5/5 first single with a sick video....more indian heritage which is original and wicked....Powerful track and definately a memorable one....
8. Retaliate(featuring Twiztid)-5/5 best twiztid combo since "Look at Me" Their lyrics really ooze the wickedness outta the track.....Another good fight song, which ABK seems to be alright at.....J does some chorus work yet again but its not irritating.
9. Trees and Woods-5/5 Another slower song that I really like....his singing is actually excellent on this.....and I Imagine alotta wicked images of this song.....reminds me of those fake ass monsters on the village.....breakdown of the song is pretty awesome also.
10. Nevehoe(Featuring Shaggy 2Dope)3.5/5 Keeping the same pace of the album...but just lacking a little....i dunno if its shaggys lyrics or the beat.....chorus is alright....just not one of my favorites
11. Laugh At You-5/5 WICKED! I love the imagery of this one....i can visualize this high school murder.....I relate to this as I walk the hallways and people give those looks....I will shed no tears!! just love the song
12. It Doesnt Matta(Featuring Blaze and Esham)3/5 Yea its got good lyrics.....i just dont dig the beat....the piano just doesnt fit to me....chorus is sick w esham.....but just not that great of a song to me
13. Oh No-5/5 Fxckin awesome......i feel like screamin this to those punk asses at school.....but anyway its a raging song with a wicked chorus and although its not really a critic pick....I think its a favorite of mine..
14. Charlie Brown(featuring J)-5/5 Just keeps gettin better with a smoker song...I relate to somma these problems...Ive had ronchy ass weed before but yea kno its a great song.....loved it in concert and I'll always love it when I'm hittin the herb....
15. Put My Life On It-4.5/5 Another good song mainly for the chorus.....Love it.....plus the tone is inspiring for I'd like to put my life on somthin too...anyway its a kick ass song
16. Can't Help It-4/5 Still wicked at the end of the album....and its kind of a helpless song.....Another ounce of pure dirty history
17. 2 Whom This May Concern-3/5 Its a good ending track....but I'm not really one for ending tracks....I like nothings left and Pass me by....but there not really tracks i listen to alot....theyre great...just not my fave picks.....

Well I feel this album is a good step up from "Hatchet Warrior"....its got the same tone throughout the whole thing....Once the treasure chest opens, the warrior is released to address issues 2 whom it may concern.....i picture him in his cloak and warrior paint in dark alleys and in the sewers....Spitting all this wicked shxt about the things he sees around him in this world.....Cant wait till the next ABK LP......MCL and Killa Love-Sexton

4 out of 5 stars ABK keeps bringin' the flavor with 'Dirty History'..........2005-08-20

Let me say first off: I don't get why ABK recieves so much hate from juggalos. IMO he's a real cool person to have on Psy. He's different, alot different than what you'd usually hear, and he fits in perfect with the mix of things. Also, he wasn't as bad on TFTLP as juggalos make him out to be...but anyway, back to this review.

For the most part ABK's debut on Psy, 'Hatchet Warrior', was well-recieved by most juggalos. It had alot of guest spots & such so I'm not sure if that's what drew most people in or if they were actually listening to ABK's vocals. Anyway, I think that's sort of the reason why this album wasn't as well-recieved.

'Dirty History', ABk's sophmore effort, is mostly just ABK. Yeah it has all the Psy family teaming up on parts of it but it dives alot deeper into ABK holding his own without having a guest spot on every track. The CD kind of flows together all-the-way through, too, and that might be why some people dislike it.

Here's my breakdown of 'Dirty History':

1. Intro - Alright intro. Sets the mood well for the album. N/A

2. Bombs on You - Real average intro-ish track. Sort of similiar to #2 on 'Hatchet Warrior' in the fact that it seems like its just an intro-track or something. Not really worth hearing IMO. 2/5

3. Stick and Move - Now here's when the album kicks off. Nice track with some a good, hard chorus. ABK holds it down on this track & if you've peeped the Road Fools DVD there's a real low-budget video shot for this one. 4/5

4. Down Here (feat. Violent J) - Interesting concept. ABK & J do well together but this track has always seemed kind of boring or something to me. Good to hear, though, cuz I know alot of people like it. 3/5

5. Gimmie Ah Beat - I love this track. It makes me think of freestyle beatboxin' or something. It sounds real fresh and ABK spits some hot ish for like 2 verses. The skit at the end is funny, too, and a nice segway into #6. 5/5

6. Party at the Liquor Store (feat. Colton Grundy) - When I first picked up this LP I loved this track. Now its kind of wore out on me. Blaze (Colton Grundy) is dope as f**k on this track & its always good to hear ABK & Blaze together. There's another low-budget video shot for this one on the Road Fools DVD, as well. 3.5/5

7. Hey Yall - The "single". Amazing track. Killa really goes deep in this one. There's a video shot for this one & its dope...NOT low-budget, too, looks like a real video (a good quality one, anyways). 5/5

8. Retaliate (feat. Twiztid) - Good track. A Twiztid appearence is always good no matter what & ABK holds his own here. Mono is really dope on this track BTW. 4/5

9. Trees and Woods - I'm not sure what to think about this. It seems like it would be good but its so slow-moving I can't stand listening to it. Shows some depth but once again its way too slow for me to stand. 2/5

10. Nevehoe (feat. Shaggy 2 Dope) - Nice native feel...again. Anyway, Killa's fresh on here, but Shaggs verse is really strange. "Your new name is vittle fingers/cuz you're a bank account rapist tryin 2 steal my dinners"...o_O. Not sure what to think after that. 3.5/5

11. Laugh at You - Probably my fav. off the album just becuase this one I can really, REALLY relate to. The whole "outcast, freekshow" theme applies here, and once again, its really easy for me to relate. I really like the part at the end, too, where the kids are screaming "THEY'RE ALL GONNA LAUGH AT YOU!"... 5/5

12. It Doesn't Matta (feat. Colton Grundy & Esham) - Another fav. of mine. The beat is SICK & this is another in-depth performance from Killa. Blaze's verse is unbelievably good & Esham sticks to the hook, which is probably for the best since both ABK's verses & Blaze's are untouchable on here. 5/5

13. Oh No - Meh. Skippable. That's all I can say. 2/5

14. Charlie Brown (feat. Violent J) - Well, this one is the worst on the album. Really, really, really annoying hook & unless you're as high as they are you're not gonna like it. This is like "Mr. Sesame Seed Pt. 2" as well & that's a really bad thing. 1/5

15. Put My Life on It - Back to fresh sh*t. Another good lyrical performance from ABK. 4/5

16. Can't Help It - Same as above ^. Another good lyrical performance & the hook is pretty hard too. Good sh*t. 4/5

17. 2 Whom This May Concern - Really good ending track. This one's a real good ballad-type track. Like sombody said before it sounds like a mix of "Nothing's Left" & "I'm Alright". Also another low-budget video of this is featured on Road Fools. 5/5

So, overall, I'm not gonna say this was better than HW, but I still liked it. Definitely not as bad as alot of juggalos make it out to be...

The low-points are really low on here, but the high-points are all 5/5 tracks. So yeah, definitely an album worth adding to your Psy. collection.

2 out of 5 stars D12 and the Dixie Chicks?.......2005-07-21

What the hell was your about. I must have bought a different copy than you because mine doesnt have Eminem on it. What the FXCK are you on. I also didnt know ABK toured with the Chixie Dicks. What the hell world are you living in? O.k. First off I love ABK's first album but he lost me here. The only songs i can really listen to are "party at the liquor store" and "charlie brown". I say DL it first. If you like it buy it. If not, pitch it. MCL

5 out of 5 stars Solid Second Release.......2006-12-30

The Black Maria have successfully followed up Lead Us To Reason with a solid performance on A Share History In Tragedy. Though vocalist Chris Gray doesn't really vary his voice too much, he still manages a unique sound in comparison to other bands. (One area it would be interesting to hear him explore would be more screaming a la Atreyu's Alex Varkatzas. He lets one scream loose on track 2 that sounds great.) The guitar on this album isn't anything shredtacular but is more used as an instrument of art as many bands don't use it today.

Although all the tracks are pretty solid, the first few times listening to it tracks 1 (The Perilous Curse), 2 (Waking Up With Wolves), 4 (Van Gogh), and 8 (Living Expenses) seemed to stick in my mind clearly. Definitely an album worth buying and if you're looking for a new band that's a mixture of alternative and hardcore The Black Maria is one of your best bets.

5 out of 5 stars History In the Making indeed.......2006-08-05

JR Writer puts out an extremely impressive debut mainstream album. He truly shows why he wears his wings. His lyricism and delvery are incredible. The beats are sizzling and there is no track that gives up. Every song is incredible. A few diplomats show up to lay down their lines, but the majority of the album is JR showing that he can rap with the best. My personal favorite is Goonies feat. Jim Jones and Hell Rell followed closely by Why Try feat. S.A.S. S.A.S. sounds eerily like Bone Thugs N Harmony on the hook on theis track. All the tracks on this album are banging placing History In the Making as one of the best albums of the year.

5 out of 5 stars The Movement Continues............2006-07-28

The title definitely fits well with this album cause J.R. proved that he can do more than just the mixtape scene with joints like "Grill Em" and "Xtacy" but besides the singles, bangers like "Riot Pump" and "He's Moving" definitely bang out, "High Music" is funny as ****. His heart felt joints are "To Be a Diplomat" and "My Life". Fire album along with "Killa Season", cop both if you a fan of The Movement. P.S. Better than all of the down south crap coming out(excluding Wayne, T.I., and Luda)

2 out of 5 stars Wackness.......2006-07-28

J.R. Writer sounds like a baby CamRon in voice, flow, and rhyme scheme. Even though in my opinion he's a little bit better than CamRon, that's still not saying much (since CamRon is arguably the worst rapper out right now). The album isn't as horrible as CamRon's album earlier this year either. There are actually some songs that are tight to me and if they aren't tight...they're at least listenable. But listenable doesn't make it good. JR Writer doesn't spit any game, he just raps often rambling along in his slow flow. His rhymes while technically sound, are boring. The production is riding though...always love Dipset beats and really they are the only thing that keep me interested. However, JR Writer is the most talented of anyone in Dipset I've heard so far and has a little potential. Good songs include Byrd Call, Xtaci, and That's A Bet. 2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars INSANE.......2006-07-27

Another member out of Dipset lights it up. These guys are on a huge roll not just on the streets and the underground, but in the mainstream. This CD JR Writer shows what he does best! Murder anyother rapper out there. His lyrics are straight insane. Gotta say he can straight gangsta rap and then the song Xtasy shows his verstailty so damn much... just damn. I don't see anyother rapper topping this CD this year. Dipset does it again...

5 out of 5 stars D*** this boys hot.......2006-07-24

in his first non mixtape(writers Block) project History in the Making will go down in the history as possbly thhe best album out this year will have to wait for the games till i decide.Jr writer is solid and has good punchlines this cd is going to be a classic in the future

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decent "missing link" band with a few great songs.......2000-07-19

This is a well-done retrospective of a forgotten L.A. band occupying roughly the same historical space as Hanoi Rocks; that is, post-New York Dolls/Heartbreakers glam rock and pre-Poison/G&R glam "metal." The Joneses' sound is very close to the Heartbreakers', right down to the flat, nasal vocals and the double-cutaway Les Paul Junior.

This disc starts off strong and soon goes downhill (viz. the plodding, non-country Hank Williams cover), but if you're a Heartbreakers fan it's worth picking up for "Pillbox," "Fix Me," and "Graveyard Rock."...

As Chuck D. put it, "most of my heroes don't appear on no stamps." But quite a few of them have been signed to Def Jam records. Aside from a brief period in the early '90s (anyone remember Downtown Science?), rap's premier label has remained ahead of the game for the past 15 years. Proof positive is this collection. Starting with LL Cool J's classic "Radio," it gathers many of the label's early hits--singles that were wildly successful at a time when hip-hop didn't have many commercially viable outlets--along with several of its new generation platinum-plus selections.

Besides the well-chosen inclusion of Domino's sadly overlooked "Getto Jam" and Oran "Juice" Jones's classic "The Rain," there aren't many surprises in the lineup, which is a good thing. From EPMD to Jay-Z, all the songs you wanna hear are right here. On the minus side, 3rd Bass and Nice and Smooth could have been better represented, and we could have done without the Foxy Brown and Ja Rule tracks. All told, however, this is a bit of History worth owning. --Rebecca Levine

2 out of 5 stars Def Jam Needs To Open The Vaults (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-05-29

With a title like "Def Jam 1985-2001: The History Of Hip Hop, Vol. 1" you would think that they would take you through the history of their record company over a 16 year period. Well they do...sort of. Since '85 (the year I was born), Def Jam has had a major spin of artists that were on their roster, that had big hits. Artists like LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, and Public Enemy really held down the company through the mid to late 80's with chart topping singles like "Radio", "Fight For Your Right" and "Fight The Power" respectively. Some of the lesser known artists from the 80's were on here as well like Oran "Juice" Jones with his song "The Rain" (the reason I bought this album, because I couldn't find the song anywhere else). Then in the 90's they have most of the artists who are currently hanging around today like Jay-Z (of course), DMX, Redman, Method Man, Foxy Brown. Most of them all scored hits and chart topping singles with the songs on here.

So why such a low rating? Good question. Every one of these song here bang, but this doesn't cover all of Def Jam's roster within the 16 year period. You're probably thinking that as big as Def Jam was, everybody wouldn't be able to fit on one CD. True, but the problem that I have is that most of these songs are easily accessable, with the exception of a few, and mostly on their solo albums. Notice how there are few artists from the west coast on here. In fact there are only two; Warren G. and Domino. Many people may not know that Def Jam left out a boat load of artists who had singles just as good as the ones on here and could have blown up if they had the correct promotion. Artists like Jayo Felony, Richie Rich, South Central Cartel (just to name a few) had banging singles just as the ones on this CD, but suffered poor promotion back in the 90's. Who ever was on Def Jam's marketing team should have been fired. Those people should have a place on this album as well as others that should be accessable to fans of Def Jam at a reasonable price. It sucks that we are given a CD full of people that everybody knows (not to mention there are aready a few other Def Jam Greatest Hits CD's that are floating around). Most of these songs were already played into the ground back in the day, and fans already have the albums that these songs are on.

What I'm trying to say is that Def Jam needs to expose the artists that they just forgot back in the day, not to mention let their albums go out of print. Here are some of the albums/artists who suffered poor promotion that didn't make it on the album: Take a Ride, All Day Everyday, Conversation, Seasoned Veteran, This Is the Shack, just to name a few. Given those album might not have had banging singles like the ones on this album, but if they had the proper promotion and air play, they would have gold/platnum plaques. Some of the lesser know artists get exposed on the Def Jam Music Group Inc.: 10th Year Anniversary, but not all of them...let alone paying a high price for that. It sucks that Def Jam has forgotten a chunk of their roster, and doing whatever it can to make sure they stay forgotten by not putting them on this LP. Buy this if you're looking for some old big name hits by big name artists at the time the songs came out. But you can make a Def Jam Greatest Hits CD yourself, and not spend any money on this here. Hopefully Def Jam will open their vaults, and dig deeper to expose fans of artists that they forgot on the "History of Hip Hop, Vol. 2" album, but with all the new artists and it's new management, there is a lesser chance of that happening. Peace.

5 out of 5 stars good.......2005-03-30

this is a good compilation but where the hell is t la rock and jazzy jay's it's yours? thats a rap classic for sure and i reckon def jam's first record should at least be on the greatest hits. its not on here and it ain't on the other one either. WTF?!?

5 out of 5 stars Def Jam Classics.......2001-08-10

Def Jam has developed the reputation of being the staple of hip-hop music. From the days when LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys ruled the airwaves to the modern times of Ja Rule and Method Man, theyv'e always been able to sign the superstar artists. Def Jam's History of Hip-Hop compilation captures the shining moments of their time as rap's dominant label in one album. Only the classic rap anthems make the record.Slick Rick's "Children Story" and EPMD's "Crossover" are too joints alone that make this album a must have. Throw in the G-funk of Warren G and Nate Dogg's Long Beach duet "Regulate", Jay-Z's club-banger "Can I Get A" and Mary J and Method Man's "All I Need Remix" and there are just too many jewels to pass up. All of these tracks belong on any bodys musical collection and theres no better way to get them than in one dope cd.

4 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2001-02-20

This is a great CD with alot of good songs on it, spanning three decades. It has a variety of different styles and doesn't get old. It is great for me because I like new music as well as old school music.

5 out of 5 stars All Of These Are Just Dope!.......2001-02-19

Man, unless they remix these all to hell, there's no way this list can screwed up. I mean you have old school stuff like Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys, new school stuff like Jay-Z and Ja Rule, plus all of the isht in the middle. Thing is destined for stardom! Yeah, well I guess that's all there is to say.

4 out of 5 stars the first 7" was the best..........2001-12-12

they really never did top it. most of their later work was a lot more slowed down and boring. take, for example, the 'you' lp, which isn't on here but will probably be on volume 2. the first song on each side is classic, the one after it is okay, and the rest is just pretty boring...however, the stuff on here is pretty good, but can be overbearing in its quantity at times.

4 out of 5 stars classic DC HC.......2001-11-29

Classic DC hardcore band , and also the only one next to Bad Brains to stay together spanning nearly 10 years. This anthology collection starts off great with it's catchy hardcore punk tracks , but as it starts getting to the Joyride album it slows down and kinda leaves you bored after awhile. What I really wanna know is like someone else pointed out...wheres the tracks from the Year in Dischord?..THAT'S CLASSIC..they left out "I'm James Dean" and other great songs , and the versions of those songs that are on here were performed alot better on the Year in Dischord album..get it anyway it's still classic hardcore

3 out of 5 stars another hardcore cd.......2001-08-12

definitely hardcore music, but nothing worth trying to sell.

5 out of 5 stars Goverment Issue - Seminal DC Band.......2001-06-21

Government Issue is the ONLY DC band to stick it out from the begnning to the near end of the seminal DC Hardcore era. They progressed from one album to the next, never losing intensity.

Their earlier stuff is catchy, but look to songs like "they know", and "hear the scream". Both versions of "Blending in" are massive, in all respects.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Representation of Good DJ's in the Past Two Decades.......2003-05-27

Generally, I'm not a big fan of anything affiliated with MTV, but this disc is a promising sampler of a number of great djs from the past 15 years. The only disappointment is that Dj Shadow doesn't appear, but they got just about every other good dj on hear, so I can't complain. Best tracks: Showtime at the Dump by Peanut Butter Wolf, Cut Chemist Suite by Ozomatli, and the The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

      5 out of 5 stars the Best C-D That I Own.......2000-10-27

this c-d really got me into the dj scene. i picked it up expecting about 2 or 3 really good songs, but instead, the Whole c-d Was AWESOME. This c-d has to be one of my favorites of all time.you HAVE to get this c-d, i reccomend it for people who love to hear the dj's who scratch and make tight beats, some of the better songs are numbers, 2,3,7,8,9,10,12,&16.LOTS of really good songs

5 out of 5 stars Who's Who list of Hip Hop's most influential DJs.......2000-09-29

Where would hip hop be without pioneers like Grand Wizard Theodore, Grandmaster Caz and Granmaster Flash; turntable masters like DJ Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike, ColdCut and Rob Swift; and scratch geniuses/super-producers like Babu, Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, Cut Chemist and DJ Premier? If you wnated to start a hip hop university, these guys would make up your core faculty. Forget the emcees.

The only logical argument you could make against buying this is that you already own these tracks on their individual LP releases. But MTV did put some thought into this release, placing the tracks in chronological order--or close to it. There is a nice mix of old and young talent, but many legendary mixmasters were left out. They include:

Kool Herc, Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Rhethmatic, Vinroc, Cash Money

The only criticism is that MTV should have treated these guys to a 3-disc box set instead of a just a single-disc complilation. But this CD provides a delicious slice of turntablist classics from the cream of the hip hop world.
