Along with Kiss Me, Kate, 1934's Anything Goes is usually thought to be Cole Porter's finest show. Even without a young belter named Ethel Merman as the lead, the show's parade of hits ("I Get a Kick Out of You," "All Through the Night," "You're the Top," and "Blow, Gabriel, Blow") would have secured it a place in Broadway's pantheon. This recording is the first one to use the original 1934 arrangements, painstakingly reconstructed with the help of one of the original arrangers, Hans Spialek, and it also includes three songs cut from the original production. And the excellent cast does the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor John McGlinn proud: Kim Craswell is her usual powerhouse as Reno Sweeney (if only a little brittle around the edges sometimes), while mezzo Frederica von Stade smoothly adapts to musical theater as Hope Harcourt. All musical-theater lovers should have Anything Goes in their collection, and this recording is quite a worthy one. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The Original, but not the Better.......2007-01-31
This CD is quite a classic, as it is Anything Goes, but in as close to its original form as possible. The other recordings of Anything Goes have been altered significantly with dropped and added songs. This CD also is very much in the classical musical theater style. This seems to be an ensemble piece, with big chorus numbers mixed in equally with love duets, and the occasional ballad. After listening to a few tracks, you will surely have a tune stuck in your head, but the nice thing is none of these are annoying tunes. The singers (save one) are great; the lyrics are decent, although sometimes predictable, and the orchestration is out in full grandeur. I would suggest this for collectors, older listeners, or listeners of the older musicals. This is not one for the newer listeners who are captivated with the likes of Wicked and Tarzan. For the newer listeners I would suggest getting the 1962 Off-Broadway Cast, it has a much fresher feel to it, and I prefer it to this one. Favorite Song: "Anything Goes"
Anything Goes - Cole Porter.......2006-03-18
I'm too young to have heard this music when it was originally released, but heard some of the songs on the radio as part of a Cole Porter feature and liked them. I looked up the details on the BBC website and tried to find the same recording on-line. The only way I could get it was ordering from Amazon America, which I did. No problems - delivery within 2 weeks and (including postage) same cost as a full price CD in UK.
If you know any of these songs and want to hear them recorded with original orchestration, without anything added or taken away, and sung by very good singers, then this will fit the bill.
Orchestration is very good, nothing too lush or fancy, it just fits the words perfectly. And beautifully recorded.
The singers are all very good except for Jack Gilford who I personally thought was awful - but he only features once. Kim Criswell is exceptional.
With the CD comes a very informative booklet, giving full text of the lyrics, background to how the musical came to be written, and an explanation of the context of the topics covered by the songs.
I'm very glad I went to the trouble of getting this CD. If you want to hear Cole Porter's musical as it sounded originally, then get this!
An excellent additionto the Cole Porter fan's collection........2005-09-22
If you like Cole Porter and/or musical comedies, don't miss this item. The performances are outstanding. The entire production is faithful to the original production. Also included is a very thorough booklet, which even has a glossary explaining Porter's allusions in his lyrics.
A PLEASANT SURPRISE . . . .......2005-08-07
My introduction to ANYTHING GOES was the 1962 revival on LP. (Remember LPs? Remember when vinyl meant music and not imitation leather?) With it I became an Eileen Rodgers fan and remain so to this day. (Would someone please re-issue the original Broadway cast recording of TENDERLOIN so Broadway fans may hear Ms. Rodgers belt "Little Old New York" as only she can? I was fortunate to purchase the Angel Broadway CD before Capitol dropped it, along with many other fine cast recording. Shame!!!) Anyway, I like this version and highly recommend it, especially for its restored original orchestrations and for the excellence of its three leads. Yes, the Ambrosian Singers are too well trained and "proper" to sing "Broadway" and the bits of dialogue reveal how the "book" played second fiddle to the music in those days. Thankfully, this would change with SHOW BOAT, and John McGlinn's EMI recording of the complete score with dialoge - although not my favorite - is an invaluable document and needs to be in any serious collection of Broadway show recordings.
I truly appreciate the authenticity of this (ANYTHING GOES) project. I only wish McGlinn and company had not approached the show with kid gloves, because it lacks the energy and immediacy of a good Broadway cast recording. There were times, when listening, I felt as I often do in a museum. The piece of art is a classic and much to be admired, but don't get too close. And you mustn't touch! Nevertheless, I highly recommend this recording. Kim Criswell deserves to be on your shelf along with Eileen Rodgers and Patti LuPone.
As close to the original 1934 performance as we'll ever get!.......2004-10-23
Of the many ANYTHING GOES recordings, this is the ONLY one to recreate the score as it was heard on opening night in 1934.
The later stage revivals (1962 and 1987) dropped some of the original songs and added other Cole Porter standards. While these versions play well on stage, there is something to be siad for hearing the original text and orchestrations. While no one can replace Ethel Merman's original star performance, it was not preserved because "original cast" albums were not being done in 1934. She did record some of the songs over the years but never with the original orchestrations. (Just think if EMI had made this set in the 1960s and brought Merman into the studio to record her interpretations! What a missed opportunity.) That said, Kim Criswell brings the requesite belt to Reno Sweeney's songs. Cris Groenendaal brings a pleasant light tenor to Billy Crocker's songs, and Frederica Von Stade (one of the few opera singers whose voice seems well suited to american musical theatre repretoire) is well suited to Hope's short musical scenes. As an ingenue, she doesn't get to sing all that much!
Not all is perfect. Jack Gilford was too old and frail having little voice left for Moonface Martin's number. And the Ambrosian singers sing correctly without having the proper "broadway" sound. Nevertheless, John McClinn conducts with precision, and the thick booklet is full of fascinating facts about the show, a detailed synopsis, all the lyrics and an amusing glossery explaing some of the obscure references in Porter's original lyrics.

ORDER AND BEAUTY.......2006-08-30
Duparc composed little and published less. The 17 songs with piano (including one duet) that we have on this disc - just over one hour of music - constitute virtually all he chose to leave us as a musical legacy after more than 80 years of life. Some of the poets he set are familiar names - Baudelaire, Gautier, Sully-Prudhomme, Leconte de Lisle, one translation from Goethe - but three of the 17 are by one Jean Lahor. What they have as a common theme is a sense of incapacity to deal with mundane life, this manifested in the earlier poems as an escape into fantasy and dreams, lapsing into lonely sadness in the later. Whether the poetry of Lahor is of `middling quality', in the supercilious phrase of the liner-note writer, I wouldn't be knowing. My own French has no difficulty with understanding the literal meaning of anything here, and it is probably up to recognising the stature of Baudelaire, but whether it is good enough to pass such judgments on the plain and innocent-seeming verses of Lahor I am not so sure. It seems to me that a native speaker of French might miss the magic behind the simple diction of Housman, and what I seem to find in Lahor is at least a patent and fragile sincerity.
This poetry is set to a music of exquisite refinement and poise. There is clear influence from Wagner in one or two ways, particularly in some of the more vigorous accompaniments and probably also in the almost total avoidance of word-repetition, but the very French sense of atmosphere is as strong as it is in Debussy, and the vocal lines combine a Wagnerian flexibility with a delicate lyricism that recalls Berlioz. Duparc was also an outright perfectionist, and perfectionism is catching. It infects even such a slattern as I am myself when I listen to these fine-spun little masterpieces, and it seems to me that nothing less than total perfection in their performance can do them full justice.
What I find in this recital is total perfection from Thomas Allen, but only excellence from Sarah Walker and Roger Vignoles. They all show thorough understanding of this music, and they convey their understanding with both power when required and discretion, which is always required. I could probably ask for nothing more by way of insight into the soul of the works. Where I find something slightly lacking is at a more mundane level. Apart from a couple of slightly uneasy high notes, Sarah Walker's technical command is assured, and I feel more than a little ungallant in saying crudely that her voice is not quite what is needed for Duparc - it is just slightly ordinary, and her French is not as good as Allen's either. As the recital progressed I longed more and more for Veronique Gens, whose memorable Berlioz Nuits d'Ete came back forcefully into my mind. As for the accompaniment, it calls for the highest praise in its mastery of the idiom and style (which are more varied than you might expect). Vignoles catches the special and elusive atmosphere of this special and elusive composer with genuine and deep insight, and there is real and impressive power in the later sequences of the last song of all. However the shortcomings - slight but in this context very telling - are once again at a more humdrum level. The touch needs to be the last word in the `order, beauty, comfort, peace and pleasure' that Baudelaire himself yearns for in `L'Invitation au Voyage'. In particular the frequent tremolando sequences call for superhuman evenness, and when I ask myself `Who do I want to be doing this?' the answer that comes to me is as much a fantasy as anything in the poems - I want Michelangeli.
For some reason credits are given in the liner to the translators of only three of the poems. I can think of no reason for this discrimination, and all the translations are in my own opinion excellent. I spotted no misprints in either English or French, unless Baudelaire's `ciels', which Lahor and I thought was `cieux', is one of those and not his divine afflatus as I am assuming. The liner-note itself is businesslike and informative, and the recorded quality gives me no grounds for criticism. This is a fine production, and whether or not I have laboured my reservations unduly I recommend it cordially. Perfection was what I had wanted. It is not quite what I have got, but I have got a great deal nonetheless, and it may be a long time before I am given as much again.
Breathtaking.......2002-08-23
The music of Duparc is as intense, layered, complex, and as emotional as the man who wrote it - who in fact, drove himself mad in the process. To convey this music effectively, a journey must be taken by the vocalist and the pianist into rich text and engulfing harmonies, without drowning in over analysis & self indulgence. There is a foreboding sense of secret, or the opening of a private self, and a great vulnerability and tenderness in this music. Here, the vocalists Allen & Walker, present immaculate readings of these 17 works, along with the supreme artisty of Vignoles. These recorded pieces are such exquisite duets between voice and piano that they leave you in rapture. Walker's mellifluous "Extase" with it's Wagnerian, lush accompaniment is impeccable and haunting. Allen opens his soul, along with those of the poet and composer, in "Soupir" - laden with all the angst of unrequited love. Both he and Vignoles transport their listener heavenward on soft stardust in their intimate "Serenade Florentine". This is divinely inspired music. Honest. Unpretentious. Transcendental.

perfect dreamy pop.......2007-02-11
If you take the mastermind behind Starflyer 59 and add his wife on vocals, this is the outstanding result that you get. Bon Voyage play a dream pop with surf guitars and mild electronic beats, each song is very relaxed and seems to drift upward to the heavens. Julie Martin's voice is angelic and adds a Harriet Wheeler like quality to each track. If you are a big fan of the Sundays or Six Pence None the Richer, you will love this. This is an album that should be put on late at night or on a summer day's drive. The guitar is outstanding as well, it sounds like Starflyer 59 and that is never a bad thing.
Dreamy! Melt your troubles away...........2002-10-09
I've been listening to LOTS of CDs this year, and one has stood clearly above the others--"Unshakeable" by Acquire The Fire. It is so good that I didn't see how any album this year could top it. Ah, but I didn't know Bon Voyage was coming out with a new album! Bon Voyage is musical perfection, and I have now listened to "The Right Amount" much more than "Unshakeable." Just like with Bon Voyage's first album, I listen to this over and over, something I don't normally do with an album. I've had this album for six weeks and have listened to it so many times on the way home from work that now my brain associates the sections of the songs with particular points on the road! I haven't played an album over and over like that since the last Bon Voyage CD!
For those who have Bon Voyage's first album, this album has a slightly different sound but is still 100% Bon Voyage. What makes it different is that the fuzzed-out guitars are gone. At first, I was disappointed about that because I love fuzzed-out guitars. But it didn't take too many listens to say, "Who cares the fuzz guitars are gone, this is still fantastic!" The songs on this album most resemble "West Coast Friendship" and "I Just Wanna (Be With You)" from the first album. The final song, "Advice," has the same musical mood as "Together" from the first album...and is just as short.
Speaking of short, this album of 10 songs only lasts 28 minutes! But none of the songs seem cut off or anything; they all seem long enough.
For those who aren't familiar with Bon Voyage, this group uses acoustic guitars, an electric..."cowboy" guitar, I call it--like one used in some Blondie songs or some songs by Adam & The Ants, but the mood is nothing whatsoever like Adam & The Ants. The songs are mid-tempo or slow, and the recording mix plus the female lead singer's whispery soprano voice give this album a sound that lets you float away into dreamland.
To me, Bon Voyage is perfect late summer music, say August or September when all the popular summer spots like the beaches and the amusement parks are less crowded, you've done all the rowdy stuff, and now you just want to be lazy and lay around in the humid summer heat. The perfect song for this is the slow, drifting "All The Traps," whose main line is, "Leave your cares and worries...." This is a song to make you feel like you are lying in a rowboat, just floating on the gentle waves of a quiet lake...or lying in a hammock underneath a willow tree, listening to cicadas chatter away in the late afternoon sun.
When I am in a good mood, this album enhances it. When I've had a stressful day at work, this album just melts away all the stress. Normally when I'm stressed, I like intense music like rapcore, but "The Right Amount" is extraordinary in that it can melt away my stress even though it's rather mellow. When I'm depressed, I normally like depressing music like Aleixa or Sixpence None The Richer--anything remotely cheerful is like rubbing salt in a wound. Not so with "The Right Amount." Even when I'm depressed, I can listen to this album, and it doesn't slap me in the face with too much cheerfulness but rather meets me and makes me feel better.
The sound is dreamy, sweet, rather mellow, and definitely top-notch. I could go on and on raving about this thing, but I'll stop now and let you buy it and take your own trip to dreamland.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY BUY THIS ALBUM!
Addictively original..........2005-11-10
Difficult to categorize and often verging on the bizarre, UFO's creative fusions of electronica & jazz justifiably established them as one of the mid 90's most original groups and "Bon Voyage" continues the plot with a heady musical mix that warps strongly melodic 60's style arrangements with drivingly adventurous acid-jazz. But is it any good? Well, like its predecessors, first time through is likely to leave you confused... are these guys serious? And then, as before, it starts to sink in and before you know where you are you're hitting the replay button because, despite the suspicion that it's all a bit too clever, it's just too good to put down.
Out on the edge and occasionally close to careering out of control, the album's stand-out track, "Good Luck Shore", sums it up... quite brilliant acoustic guitar opening, deeply funky bass, mind-etchingly odd background loops (with one sounding as though it's been lifted straight from "The Best of Roy Rogers" and the other from the outer extremes of Ornette Coleman), a repetitive "jazzy" chant, cool lead vocal and totally "off the wall" spoken clips, all mixed up into something that's not only cohesive but ridiculously addictive. And, while nothing else here quite beats it, there's a lot more to come on this distinctively unconventional roller coaster ride including the excellent club-latin jazz of "Tres Amigos", some amazing straight "scat" on "Flying Saucer" that's bent out into the left-field by its wacky lyrics and almost frantic arrangement, the wildly effective "chill-out/trip-hop meets wailing/chanting" of "Pilgrim", "Somewhere" & "Labyrinth" and the bewilderingly strange "Happy Birthday" & "Niji". Handle with care but prepare, once again, to be completely sucked into UFO's wonderfully odd-ball world.
UFO is growing up.......2001-04-18
Yes, the best album to date. There's a good amount of maturity in this album, with UFO flexing their musical over this mixological abilities. The jazz is more hefty than the dub on this album, and it plays well. One of the best tracks on the album is "Flying Saucer" with a phenomenal performance from jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Way, way cool. But the acid jazz is pretty hefty, too, on a lot of other tracks, and very akin to past efforts from UFO. It's a great bridge album for jazz people wanting to taste acid and acid folks wanting a bit more jazz in their coffee. The tracks stand way more independently than previous releases. The most beautiful aspect of the album is that the band is showing evolution, they're not tapped into formula. They're growing. The cloth of Bon Voyage shows a finer weave than previous albums, with a more focussed approach. Only complaint is the "Happy Birthday" track. A very lame close to a great album.
The next trip with the U.F.O...enhanced for your pleasure!.......2001-02-15
Before you get to the meat and veggies of this review, here's a quick note: this review is basically the SAME review I posted for the import cd, slightly modified to cover the video and bonus mix...which managed to push the disc's rating up to a 5! Woohoo! This will hopefully save you some money when trying to decide between the import and the U.S. release. I honestly hope that the title of this album does not imply the impending collapse of the Organization. While not as encompassing an album as 3rd Perspective, Bon Voyage still manages to cover quite a bit of musical territory. It's a bit jazzier than their previous releases, specifically in the area of Latin jazz. In fact, you'd think that the group had been tuning into fellow acid-jazzer Snowboy a bit more than normal. Track two, Tres Amigos, is by far the strongest on the album, and even if you don't like this group, or the whole acid-jazz genre, you WILL dig this song. I spin it at the club every chance I get. The UFO horns really wail on that tune...here's to hoping the next album will showcase their talents even more. Standout tracks: the aforementioned Tres Amigos, #3, Flying Saucer(crazy scat, man) and #6, Pilgrims (triphop like only UFO can do it). There is apparently a remixed version of this album available as well; I'll post a review of that after I pick it up (you might also check out a group called No Se, on the Instinct label, album is Quelle Adventure! They do an incredible tribute to UFO called United Flying Objects. Also, look for Mondo Grosso, another smooth Japanese rare groove/acid jazz ensemble). This domestic release includes a great video by the band, in addition to the bonus remix. Even if you have the import, grab a copy of this, if only for the video. Now, where is that LIVE album, I wonder...

Album Description
In a relatively short career as a composer, curtailed by illness, Henri Duparc left a small group of songs that have since proved a major part of French song repertoire. The songs for tenor and piano recorded on this disc are notable for their poetic atmosphere, emotional intensity and exquisite technique. Highlights include L'invitation au voyage, set to words by Baudelaire and perhaps Duparc's best known song, the deeply felt Elégie, the dramatic Le manoir de Rosemonde, with its haunted search, and the harmonically adventurous Chanson triste.

Album Description
A magazine long ago called "Bon Voyage" a collection of "Paris and Rome favorites." So it is, and the collection is subtitled "Continental Souvenirs." "Carefree" tells us more about Percy Faith's personality than his travelogues - with all selections written AND arranged by Faith. "Go-Go-Po-Go," a strongly rhythmic AND melodic Faith original that was the "B" side of the single of "Summer Place;" now it's in this collection with several other great Faith originals, including "Lisa," taken from a radio play Faith scored years ago. (Bill Halvorsen)

"early 1960's is was all Percy Faith on the e-z charts".......2004-02-10
Percy Faith is the master of arranging selections by other composers ~ take for instance this original two LP's on one CD "Bon Voyage" (CS 8214 in 1960) and "Carefree" (CS 8360 in 1961-all songs composed by Percy Faith) ~ his tasteful treatments always highlights the quality of the composition, ultimately making them a hit all over again. Faith's formula was always to keep the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive signature style ~ with the wave of his baton, the Percy Faith award winning orchestra is ready to strut their stuff.
Percy Faith was a staple of outstanding music during the '50s, '60s and '70s ~ his sound is unmistakable, which compiles of lush string orchestral performances ~ a treat for the ears ~ "MORGEN", "ANEMA E CORE", "MON ONCLE", "LA VIE EN ROSE", "UNDER PARIS SKIES" and "ARRIVDERCI, ROMA" Maestro Faith meets the challenge with flying colors ~ listen for Faith's originality and warmth with every cue.
Second half of the album consists of eleven Percy Faith compositions ~ "BLUE IS THE NIGHT", "BOUQUET", "BRAZILIAN SLEIGH BELLS", "CAREFREE", "CARESS", "GO-GO-PO-GO", "GOIN' HOME TRAIN", "LISA", "NO ONE BUT YOU", "PIZZICATO POLKA" and "QUIA QUIA" ~ get ready to be entranced by an audio bouquet of sound ~ Faith's scoring is wonderful and miraculous with full bodied dynamics, sends his fans into a musical frenzy ~ Percy has such a zestful enthusiasm, sharing with the listener, not only what they're looking for, but then some! Just great to have so many Faith's songs under one roof. Go ahead, dive in and enjoy every morsel...gotta love it!

Memories refreshed.......2007-05-30
I listened and was again enchanted by Kiri's voice. She would have been the Anna Netrebko of her time. I did experience her in 2 live concerts and have vivid memories how beautiful she looked matching her singing.
Dame Kiri Shines as Always.......2004-08-08
In a compilation of arias from opera roles that "might have been", Dame Kiri shows us that she could have expanded her repertoire much beyond what she actually did. Most of these arias have been sung and recorded by Dame Kiri on other recordings, and in concert videos. Some arias are from operas she did perform.(Die Zauberflote) Her clear, beautiful tone stands alone in the realm of the soprano. Some may sing for a few
years, but not over thirty and do it so very well.
The portions of the DVD were well chosen. This mostly long forgotten Mozart concert video was out of print and a gem.
The use of "Exultate Jubilate", "Porgi Amor", and the "Dove Sono" personify Dame Kiri's affinity with the work of Mozart, and bring new life to an old concert. The only downside is that there were only the three pieces on the entire DVD.
Overall, the CD includes all of the composers Dame Kiri is most associated with, and a few she is not as much known for. I
highly recommend it to anyone who is an admirer of the great soprano.
