Abandoning their usual method of production and opting for a new experience, Dr. Dog recorded We All Belong on a twenty-four-track, two-inch tape machine as opposed to their previous releases, which were recorded on their faithful eight-track. A band that thrives on using creative muscle to overcome the inherent limitations of a minimal amount of equipment, the twenty-four-track introduced new possibilities as well as new challenges. Taking full advantage of both, Dr. Dog managed to make an album that captures the organic spirit so important to the band while introducing new layers of vocal harmonies and textured instrumentation the band had only been able to imagine prior. The recording sessions for We All Belong yielded material that the band did not feel worked with the album as a whole but seemed to work as an excellent bridge between Easy Beat and We All Belong. Dr. Dog released this material in September 2006 as a six-song EP, Takers and Leavers, which Rolling Stone raved "matches The Shins with smart, retro psych rock." We All Belong was recorded in between headlining dates, a European tour with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and US dates with The Strokes.

Compared to Squeeze -Hardly!.......2007-07-20

One reviewer compared them to Squeeze. What an affront to Squeeze! I thought perhaps the singer was having an off night when I saw the Letterman performance of My Old Ways. Then the background singers came in and they even sounded off key. Perhaps that is the humour in their writing. It does not work for me. When I listened to the Amazon sample it was not a bad night, they just sound awful. Other songs also confirmed my opinion.

Favorite CD of the year so far, by far! .......2007-07-02

Dr. Dog just puts a big smile on my face. They mix elements of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, and the Band. They also have a nice "off the cuff" attitude (i.e. rough around the edges, like Exile On Main Street)...their music still falls under the category of indy/alternative, but again, they owe a lot to 60's and 70's rock. There are lots of vocal harmonies on here, lots of piano and organ, great guitar licks, and some terrific songwriting. A few of the songs sound remarkably like outtakes from Music from Big Pink (the Band), and in a GOOD way... This CD grabbed me the very FIRST time I listened to it; now the songs are starting to embed themselves in my brain, in my consciousness. I highly recommend checking out this new Dr. Dog CD.

BEST BAND ON THE PLANET.......2007-04-24

There is a review below that really says it all in how superb the music and lyrics of Dr. Dog is, this album is a must-have (as well as their previous effort, Easybeat). Thoughtful, intellegent lyrics combined with great musicianship and a stunning live show lead up to the obvious statement: Dr. Dog is the best-kept secret in music. Absolutely Amazing!.......2007-04-10

I first heard Dr. Dog when I saw them open for The Black Keys in Minneapolis MN. I was amazed at the fact that I had not heard of them considering how good they are. I became in instant fanatic and ordered all four of their CD's. In my opinion, their most recent effort, "We All Belong" is their best. What I love about Dr. Dog is that they are familiar in the way that they are everything I love about bands from the past such as The Beatles and The Band but yet they are also incredibly original and new. This album is lyrically brilliant as well as musically superior to just about anything on the radio today. Dr. Dog write true songs rather than three chord numbers in which the chorus in rammed down your throat over the 30 to 40 times that is repeated in the song. In any given Dr. Dog song there are numerous chords used and many of them are somewhat advanced chords such as diminished chords. Between the chord structure and the perfect backbone made up of classic sounding bass lines and drums that are the very definition of rhythm and timing this band is simply better and more enjoyable to listen to than virtually any other out right now. The three part harmonies really add to the vintage sound of the record. Not many bands have used three part harmonies and executed them this successfully since the 1960's. It is hard to pick standout songs considering the fact that literally every song is a masterpiece but I guess if I had to choose, my favorites would be "Keep a Friend", "Alaska" and "My Old Ways". This is the best new record to come out during my life of 22 years. It is a simply a must have!

Ike Reilly's charm lies in the fact that he asks for salvation quite frequently, knowing damned well that he has no intention of repenting. The devilish genius behind the pop-sensible major label release, Salesmen and Racists (among a slew of others titles), is back in the saddle with the independent, roadhouse-ready We Belong To The Staggering Evening. Most of the bluesy, lo-fi songs on Staggering Evening abide by the old "sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll" cliché, with the addition of under-age girls, lambasting the government, making light of religion, occasional drug-induced fist fights and trips to Mexico.

If you're prone to getting your panties in a wad when people speak out against your cause, Staggering Evening must be exempt from your scrutiny simply because Reilly unapologetically spares nobody's feelings in the songwriting, including his own. In the saloon sing-along "Valentines Day in Juarez," Reilly knocks himself with the line, "Yesterday I swallowed. Today I choked," while in the campy track "I Hear The Train" he takes a stab at Evangelicals with the line, "Tell your minister he looks real cute in his Lutheran suit." Album highlights include the foot-stomping, opening track "8 More Days Til The 4th Of July", the single "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and the gritty "It's Hard To Make Love To An American". Simply put, Staggering Evening depicts a world where women are just as risqué as men (if not more so), and where the most debated issues of our time are lightheartedly taken with a grain of salt.

A cool disc that you wish you'd hear in a smokey bar, but probably wont. Great hooks and melodies with a slightly punkish take on Rock and Roll. This cd is way cool enough for older rockers, but I'm afraid the only people who hear about it thru the grapevine are most likely younger hip kids. That's a shame because this disc is a keeper! Yes, Dylan type lyric structures run thru the whole disc, but with a smokey bar-room feel. Great sense of humor concerning drug references. I am now forced to explore these guys past cds cause this one is so damn tastey!

I can find glowing reviews for ANY cd on The 'Zon, but not even a bad one written for Ike Reilly's newest. That's a shame, peoples, because you're not in on it. Don't blame me, I had no idea you were so uncool. This is a classic rock and roll album for the present. Some metion Dylan as a reference, but there's nothing folk about it. It uses bits of most American pop of the last 50 years and kicks it out in a shambling, drunken, druggie, classic punk rock song fest. It pretty much rocks. If you drink, smoke and like rock n' roll, you'll like this a lot. If you jog, meditate and eat vegetables, you'll still probably like it. Get in on it now, and I won't tell your friends about the lameness. Have a nice day.

These guys are a GREAT new band with some awesome talent packed behind them. With this CD they have the same good demo songs, and the awesome new ones mixed perfectly! I love the flow of the album and I find myself constantly dancing around to this whenever I have it on. Even if it's at 8 in the morning. =)

I listened to one song and absolutly fell in love with The Summer Obsession. So I HAD to have their cd. It's the kind of band that if you need a "pick-me-up". Just listen to one of their songs and it sets you in a good mood. And just to let you know it's not one of those cds where you hear one song love it and end up disliking the rest of the cd. You will love the whole cd, every song is different. They have amazing talents in what they do.

I must have listened to this CD, "This is where you belong" - a hundred times since I bought it. Everytime I listen I find something new that I like about it. The album is of course amazing, but for those of you who don't know. The album is absolutely amazing. Get it for your children, or for yourself. My mom loves it, so you may too. lol. The debut single Do You Remember can relate to many teens, and help them out. And its inspired by real people. My favorite song is Do You Remember. Its the first song I skip my cd to, and listen to with the top down. All the songs are amaazing. Can't have just one(favorite)!

Album Description

The Marshall Tucker Band arrived at a crossroads on its third album, Where We All Belong. With two successful LPs already under their belt, the Spartanburg, SC sextet was on the verge of even greater popularity. Marshall Tucker's eclectic brand of musical Americana had won them a fervent following as a touring act. Now—thanks to lead guitarist Toy Caldwell's knack for hook-laden songwriting—they were edging closer to breaking into Top 40 radio.

Where We All Belong gives a taste of both ends of the Marshall Tucker spectrum: the expansive jam band and the more tightly-focused recording act. Released in 1974 as a two-record LP, the album found the band refining its own distinctive brand of country-rock on the studio cuts.

Anticipating the mass appeal of cowboy culture a few years later, Toy and his band adopted a bit of a Wild West attitude in their music. For all the prominence of pedal steel guitar and down-home lyric imagery in its tracks, though, Where We All Belong was far more adventuresome than most mainstream country music of its time.

Balancing the well-honed studio cuts were the in-concert recordings that round out the album. The genre-spanning versatility and instrumental excellence of Marshall Tucker's membership is caught here in all its unfettered glory. As a live act, the band had the power to drive audiences delirious with their soaring jams, as these recordings demonstrate.

The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01

All the finest ingredients of rock, country, blues, and jazz blended into a down-home gumbo as only The (original) Marshall Tucker Band could do it! The remastered series sounds superb audibly, and the packaging is beautifully restored- complete with historic photos and interesting liner notes. The Marshall Tucker Band remastered recordings of the original band- "Self Titled" through "Tenth"- are well worth the investment.

Where is it exactly that we all belong?.......2007-03-24

I just have to say the cover art is among the worst I've seen, and really cheesy. Who is the old guy in sandals supposed to be? and the back portrait of the band is pretty goofy too. I just had to get that off my chest.

Fortunately, the music contained within is better than one would expect from the awful cover art. The songs on the studio set aren't as strong as the ones on their debut, but they're all well-played. Toy Caldwell is truly an excellent guitar player. "This Ol Cowboy" is of course a wonderful song - perhaps my favorite of theirs - and definitely the best song on the album. "Low Down Ways", "In My Own Way," and "Try One More Time" are all highlights. But, as you can probably tell from the titles of the songs, they're all rather ordinary both musically and lyrically and don't really cover new ground.

I have to admit, I'm not really a fan of this kind of music. I don't like jam bands, and I don't like flutes either. However, the live set is very good, great versions of "Ramblin on My Mind", "24 Hours at a Time," amd "Take the Highway." However, as blazing as "24 Hours at a Time" is, with Charlie Daniels on fiddle, I really think it's too long and gets too far out there. And what's with the bass solo? That really ruins the song (thank god they didn't decide to do a drum solo). "Everyday I have the Blues" really takes a page out of the Allman Brothers book, especially during Toy's solo when the band comes in (sounds suspiciously like the Allman's version of "Stormy Monday"). Of course, MTB only sounds like the Allmans on this one track -a B.B. King song - because their material is much more country than the Allmans, who are more blues than anything.

Overall, then, this is a solid album, but it is hardly a masterpiece, and MTB seems to be covering old territory, though of course they do offer the whole cowboy thing, kind of new at the time. But the jam band stuff has already been done better by the Dead and the Allmans, tho Toy Caldwell's guitar playing rivals that of Jerry Garcia or Duane Allman. So, if you're into jam bands or Southern rock, you'll probably like this. I find it kind of boring, and not as good as their first album.

Undiscovered gem!.......2006-03-28

Even though I'd been listening to the band for 20 years plus, I'd never run across this album. I'm very glad I did! It fits right into the sound that I'd grown to expect after listening to "Searchin for a Rainbow" and "Long Hard Ride" about a million times. From "This Ol' Cowboy" to the live tracks at the end of the disk these tunes will get you where you want to be. Buy it.

This is the Marshall Tucker Band's Best!!!!.......2005-12-26

I love this CD. I have owned in on vinyl and CD. It has a great mixture of live and studio cuts on it. This has got to be Marshall Tucker's best!!! Among the finest songs on this CD are 24 Hours At A Time, This 'Ol Cowboy, and Take The Highway. Not long after this they were "discovered" and turned to a more pop/country/rock format. It was about that time I stopped buying their records. Don't miss this one if you are Southern-Rock fan!!!

Another Great Marshall Tucker Album.......2005-04-19

WHERE WE ALL BELONG is yet another great Marshall Tucker Band album. The studio portion features some great new songs, especially "How Can I Slow Down" and "Now She's Gone", while the live half includes MTB's answers to "Free Bird" or "Green Grass And High Tides", "24 Hours At A Time" and "Take The Highway." If you love the Allman Brothers Band, the Outlaws, or Lynyrd Skynyrd, you'll love this album.

Say Something Sweet to Your Reviewer.......2007-03-19

Staffors's voice has a creamy tonal beauty that make her singing immensely listenable. Her strength's as a singer are particularly evident in the many love song from the forties where the sultry yearning behind the lyrics and lush orchestration are a perfect medium for Stafford's lustrous tone and superb breath control. There is nothing forced or melodramatic in her approach to a song; she has none of the affectations common to many singers of the day and delivers a solid beautifully crafted performance on each piece. Frank Sinatra was one of her biggest fans and its not hard to hear why. My favourites? Autumn In New York; Walkin' My Baby; Haunted Heart; Georgia; Say Something Sweet to Your Sweetheart. There are some forgettable songs here that do no justice to Stafford's talent or the history of the popular song, but these are the exception. A great intro to an underated singer.

Second ASV compilation of Jo's music.......2004-10-07

Some years ago, ASV released a single CD of Jo's music (Coming back like a song 25 hits 1941 - 1947), containing many of Jo's big hits of the forties. This set, although a double CD, is a companion volume to that collection. It avoids all the hits available on that collection but Jo had plenty of others. Here you will find more of Jo's hits from the forties, together with some of her early fifties hits from Columbia.

If you've already got the boxed set (Yes indeed) covering Jo's music on Capitol and you've also got the best compilation of Jo's fifties music (Columbia hits collection), you'll have most but not all of the tracks here and on the other ASV collection. Out of this world, Ivy and White Christmas are available on the single CD while Say something sweet to your sweetheart, Sometime and Goodnight Irene are available on this set. These tracks are omitted from Yes indeed, but as that box contains four CD's and is devoted entirely to her Capitol recordings, there are many more tracks on that set that aren't on the two ASV releases.

All the Columbia hits included here can be found on Columbia hits collection. As this set only covers the period up to 1952, it misses out some later hits including Make love to me, Thank you for calling and Suddenly there's a valley. Perhaps ASV plan to release another volume some day although I doubt it - 1952 is about as far as they normally go.

If you've already got the first ASV compilation, this is an ideal way to expand your collection of Jo's music. If you haven't got any of Jo's music, buying the two ASV compilations will give you most of her hits including all the essentials.

Dedicated Jo Stafford fans may wish to buy all the compilations I've mentioned, together with the rarities collection (Jo Stafford on Capitol) just to have everything available - there are tracks on each that aren't available elsewhere - but it would involve a lot of duplication. Between these five compilations, every solo hit that Jo had during her time with Capitol is included at least once. Some of her duet hits with Gordon MacRae are missing and there are still some of her later Columbia hits not available on CD.

She really IS a Saint.......2006-09-16

This is one of Buffy Sainte-Marie's best. All you have to do is listen to "Starwalker" once and you will know this woman truly is a Saint in the manner of St. Joan: She is like holy fire. I relate to this album on a number of levels: As a woman I'm inspired by Buffy Sainte-Marie's fearlessness: who says a woman can't be a warrior? As a poet and novelist, I'm drawn in by the power of her words, and as a University Lecturer in Literature, I'm appreciative of her integration of political activism, historical point of view, and impeccable artistic form. This woman is intensely spiritual. Her songs are guided by Native teaching, emphasizing the WE instead of the I. Not all of the songs are as politically charged as "Wounded Knee" or "Starwalker." Some are folksy, lighter. Still, even these are not merely songs of personal angst: they are songs of collective grief and longing. These songs indicate just what is the right path for humans to walk. She is treasure.

Real Indians v. Fluff.......2005-11-14

If you are knowledgeable about history and are aware of the struggles of REAL INDIANS are still going through, the bury my heart at wounded knee song will affect you. If you want some fluffy Hollywood version of Indians and songs glorifying the 'manifest destiny' of America, check out the selection at Toys R' Us. I think Buffy St.Marie should be allowed to be herself without criticism of what an Indian should be. (I wish I was so brave)

Bury my Heart Somewhere Near Buffy.......2005-10-02

I see people calling the song Bury my Heart At Wounded Knee gruesome. I'f you'd ever seen what happened at wounded knee, you might think otherwise. The song is downright tame compared to what happened there. It's also fairly restrained in terms of the anger that anyone who grew up on a reservation has a right to feel.

I looked for this song because of the cover of it that the Indigo Girls did, and although they did an awesome job, hearing Buffy sing it sends a shiver even deeper because of the reality of what she grew up with. Thank you Buffy.

It is offical. Anyone can have cd. It is scary. Buffy Sainte-Marie proves that as long as you have songs, no mattter if they are good or bad, you can have a CD. Her songs sound like nothing, her indian cries sound totally made up and her lyrics make no sense. She says 'bury my heart at wouded knee' this sound gory and gross. 'starwalker' sounds like she found words and strung them together. 'Darling don't cry' sounds like an insult to Canada. 'He's an indian cowboy in the rodeo' sounds......weird. I don't even want to TALK about hte others, this is a big, fat, waste of good money.

Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile.There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

At his best, the Kinks' Ray Davies is one of the cleverest writers in pop, managing to wring universal appeal from a wholly and unapologetically English perspective. Most of the artists featured on This Is Where I Belong are American, and most acquit themselves admirably. Hosannas must be directed at Fountains of Wayne's giddy reading of "Better Things," Cracker's rousing "Victoria," an intricate working of "Art Lover" by Lambchop, and a spectacular, turbocharged "Who'll Be the Next in Line" by Queens of the Stone Age. The decision to close the album with Davies himself performing one of his finest songs--"Waterloo Sunset"--with one of his able heirs, Damon Albarn of Blur, is a neat touch. --Andrew Mueller

A Kurious Kollection of Kinks' Klassics.......2007-04-14

As Ray Davies notes in his self-penned liner notes, "tribute albums are usually conceived after the composer has 'passed.'" Of course the long-time Kinks frontman has not passed, but his legacy has certainly passed the test of time. As of this writing, these songs date back forty years--and even the most recent (""Better Things" and "Art Lover" from 1981's GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT) are 25 years old. With the release of Ray's first new album in years (2006's OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES), I finally picked this album up last week (though it was initially released in 2002).

It's a somewhat eclectic collection of songs. There are a couple of U.S. hits ("A Well Respected Man" and "Who'll Be the Next in Line") and U.K hits ("Waterloo Sunset" and "Victoria"), but there are no covers of their early hits like "You Really Got Me" or "All Day and All of the Night." Instead, most of the artists tend to lean more toward the introspective side of Ray's songbook.

Most of the artists tend to remain fairly faithful to the original Kinks' arrangements. So when you listen to Steve Forbert do "Starstruck" or Matthew Sweet perform "Big Sky," they are certainly lovingly done, but they don't really bring anything new to the songs.

There are, however, a handful of artists who approach the songs from a new angle. For example, Josh Rouse (a native Nebraskan, by the way) gives his reading of "A Well Respected Man" a haunting quality with his delicate vocal delivery. Bluegrass veteran Tim O'Brien gives "Muswell Hillbilly" a honky-tonk treatment complete with steel guitar and fiddle.

And then there is the duet with Blur frontman Damon Albarn and Ray Davies himself on perhaps his most beautiful song, "Waterloo Sunset." This version was recorded live in 1995 for a British TV show.

Taken altogether, this is a wonderful collection of songs. It certainly offers much to enjoy for any Kinks fan, and it's encouraging to see these songs being embraced by another generation of musicians. RECOMMENDED [Running time - 50:33]

Great Songs in New Versions!.......2006-11-03

This CD of new recordings of Ray Davies songs is really a pleasure to listen to. Great variety in sounds and style but great songs all the way through - though it loses a little steam towards the end.

Some tracks are very true to the original whereas others are treated in new and different ways - in some cases in very exciting ways.

The opening track "Better Days" from "Give the People What They Want" is a great song, but it always sounded a little rough and demo-like to my ears. Very interesting to learn from Davies own well-written liner-notes that it really was only demo that was included on the album. A great opener here given a power-pop treatment by Fountains of Wayne.

Steve Forbert's version of "Starstruck" from Village Green P.S. is just as great. Musically more polished than the opener, but Forbert's raw vocals give this fine song a new edge.

"Stop Your Sobbing" is given an acoustic treatment by Jonathan Richman. Very nice, which is also Bebel Gilberto's version of "No Return", which is probably the only bossa-nova song Davies ever wrote. Ray reveals that the song was written with Bebel's mother Astrud ( the girl from Ipanema ) in mind.

"A Well Respected Man" originally was a raw half-acoustic recording. This new version by Josh Rouse has been given a completely different more polished feel - the satire may not be quite as obvious as on the original but great to hear the song interpreted so differently.

"Victoria" is probably too true to the original "Arthur" version to make it really interesting.

"Who'll Be the Next in Line" is good but no more.

Another stand-out is the overlooked gem "Big Sky" from Village G.P.S. Though this new recording has been given an almost identical arrangement, the vocals are more up front than on the original which is great. Though the original is great too, I always felt it deserved a better recording.

Lambchop's version of another "Give the People What They Want" song is very different from the original. Darker and slower. Maybe this version does quite capture the ambiguity of the the Kinks'version.

"Picture Book" is another gem from the Village G.P.S. - one the greatest albums of all time - check out the the deluxe version and enjoy the original along a lot equally great out-takes. This new version is charming and fine!

If you didn't know better you would have thought "Muswell Hillbilly" was an old Hank Williams song; at least that's what Tim O'Brian makes the song sound like.

From "Lola Versus Powerman" comes another overlooked song - I do remember the Kinks played the song in their 1974 Denmark tour alongside their Preservation songs. This new version comes close to the original; the singer even sounds like Davies at times - a fine track.

"Till the End of the Day" is a great rocker but Fastball really don't add anything to it; except maybe make you want to hear the original again.

The title track was originally only released as the B-side to an obscure 1967 European single. Ron Sexsmith new version almost sounds like a 1967 recording too. Solid, but no more.

From "Face to Face" comes the oriental inspired "Fancy" - one on Davies most personal early songs, but also one of the least catchy.

Ray Davies himself along with Damon Albarn closes the album with a live version of "Waterloo Sunset" - a song that has been called the greatest single of the late 1960's.

A worthy tribute to one of the finest songwriters of rock during 4 decades.

It seems to be a requirement for music snobs to have their favorite neglected genius, the one who wrote better songs than Lennon and/or McCartney and/or both but never got the credit he or she deserved. Typically most of said snobs tend to pick Lou Reed. Well, I say good choice, no harm in that one, but I am going to have to go with Ray Davies. Sorry Lou. Ray's songs seem a bit more universal, a bit more touching, a bit easier to connect to. As much as I love "Heroin" and "Sweet Jane," I more often find myself with "Big Sky" or "This is Where I Belong" on the player. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

When I discovered this compilation, the name tipped me off that it would be good. If Ryko had called it "All Day and All of the Night," for example, or "You Really Got Me," it would have conjured up images of Van Halen or some other inane, dated hard-rock group grinding out yet another cover of the earliest stuff. "This is Where I Belong" is not only a great song from the classic mid-period years but it is also an obscurity. Somebody knew what they were doing over at Ryko, so I had to invest the $14 it cost at the time to find out whether it was any good.

And it was. These artists show exactly why Ray's music is so special...it is completely timeless. The glory of "Big Sky," my favorite Kinks song, is captured magnificently here by Matthew Sweet. Jonathan Richman shows us exactly why "Stop Your Sobbing" hasn't lost any of its charm- its simplicity allows the message- one of coping with sorrow of any kind- to come through clearly. Fountains of Wayne take another obscurity, "Better Things," and maintain its feel as a powerpop gem while making sound like it was written yesterday. None of the wit or wisdom is lost in any of these translations. Yeah Cracker doesn't sound like Cracker here but so what, you want to hear Cracker in their purest form then put on "Kerosene Hat." Nothing on here disappoints.

A worthy complilation for one of the best songwriters ever. It may even be desert island stuff for me.

Worthy tribute.......2004-10-03

I keep going back to this CD, again and again. A must-have for anyone who appreciates Ray Davies. A couple of duds (Josh Rouse, Jonathan Richman) are overwhelmed by awesome covers. Some performers opt for straight-rocking versions (Queens of the Stone Age on "Who'll be the Next in Line?," Fastball on "Till the End of the Day" and Cracker on "Victoria"). "Better Things" is a great opener, an upbeat way to start any day. Matthew Sweet turns in an epic "Big Sky." The haunting "Art Lover" as done by Lambchop is one of the most arrestingly disturbing yet poignant songs ever written. Ron Sexsmith captures the longing tone of Davies in the title track -- which says so much in so few words about Ray's romantic attachment to one's physical place in life. The arrangement (with producer Martin Terefe's looping bass) displays power in simplicity. And the closing live version of "Waterloo Sunset"...well, this one song earned Ray Davies a place in popular music's hall of fame.
