This is one of most brilliant examples of chic. New sounds with expermental touches. The japanesse Akashic Records compilation "ar" brings to your player moments of relax and avand garde, traks of japanesse musician Towa Tei, ex Dee-Light and german guru Señor Coconut y su Conjunto, the Santiago de Chile bonche techno head, you know. Try this if you enjoy good music, you'll love it. It's a bit expensive I know, but keep on mind that's from japan. Also includes a very carry and elegant graphic design box, that makes it more unique.

One of the best solo slack key CDs that I have heard. Fuller employs the nylon string guitar and some unusual slack key tunings with great effect. This is music from the heart and a breath of fresh air for the Hawaiian slack key tradition. Every cut is great; I'm looking forward to his next release!

My favorite is WHO DO YOU SAY? ... I could listen to that song forever! But all these songs are wonderful; they don't sound like "Christian Music" ... more like an artist expressing some very sincere feelings about the Holy Scriptures.

Album Description

A native of New Jersey, Alan has been performing in clubs and concert-halls for more than three decades. Influenced by the classic rock of the '60s, as well as by folk, country and blues, Alan plays a unique hybrid style he dubs "acoustic rock" which, while founded on the acoustic guitar, incorporates a variety of string instruments (autoharp, dulcimer and octave mandolin), as well as the occasional harmonica. Since 1973, Alan's driving passion has been to release a Lord of the Rings concept album.

With the exception of "The Departure of Boromir" and "The Fighting Uruk-hai," The 'Rings Project recounts the trilogy from the Hobbits' -- and particularly Frodo's -- perspective, and the bulk of the material focuses on the journey from Hobbiton to Rivendell. Through The 'Rings Project, the listener takes part in the festivities of Bilbo's farewell party, Frodo's bewilderment in the Old Forest, the conviviality of the Prancing Pony, and the pursuit by the Black Riders. The cycle concludes with the mixed feelings of loss and joy at the Grey Havens. The final song, subtitled "Friends Should Never Say Goodbye," is also the first Alan wrote back in '73, and in many ways it encapsulates the themes and message of the album.

Ultimately, for Alan, the trilogy is about friendship, a dimension of the story that one can sometimes lose sight of in the midst of its epic grandeur. Alan's lyrical emphasis is well placed, and sets his work off from many other (equally commendable) Tolkien-inspired albums that have appeared over the last few years. Thumbs up!

Definitely not a "must-have".......2005-10-21

This album is a bit bewildering to listen to. The swinging, '70s pop feel of all the songs is totally incongruent with the otherworldliness of the LOTR trilogy. Imagine! The Fellowship trekking southward on their journey to the folksy rhythms of "The Ring Goes South"?! Harmonicas and tamborines, though nice to listen to, certainly do not take you into the world of Middle Earth.

But perhaps the most absurd thing about this album is the happy, lilting melody of songs like "The Ring Goes South" and "The Nine Riders," both of which are about darkness, fear, and doom. To give you an idea of what it's like listening to these songs, imagine singing these words: "Black smoke is rising once again from the Fires of Doom" to a tune similar to, oh, say, "This Land is Your Land." You'll have a pretty good idea of the absurdity of this album.

Now, considered purely on musical terms, the songs aren't too bad. "The Ballad of Tom Bombadil" was particularly fun. But by and large, the music on this album has nothing to do with the actual story of LOTR. Don't be fooled. If you enjoy the thought of marching to the Mountain of Doom whistling a whimsical 1970s pop tune, then I guess this album is for you. Otherwise, skip it.

A must have for every Tolkien Fan........2004-03-21

Each song is a winner. With original lyrics and music, Alan draws his listeners into Tolkien's World of Middle-earth. From upbeat and fun songs like "At the Sign of the Prancing Pony" to the powerful "Fighting Uruk-hai" to the mournful "Departure of Boromir" to the heartbreaking "Frodo's Song" this CD creatively and masterfully covers the whole Lord of the Rings story. Every Tolkien fan should have this CD, as well as those who just like a good song from an imaginative and gifted artist.
