The Benin-born, Paris-based singer Angélique Kidjo has become the most popular African female artist on the world-music scene. This compilation contains 18 tracks from her five CDs released between 1990 and 1998. An electrifying performer fluent in French, English-jazz vocalese, and her country's traditional zilin vocal techniques, Kidjo often sings in her native Fon/Yoruba language. Along with her husband, bassist/producer Jean Hebral, Kidjo conjures up a zesty mix of funk, Latin, jazz, gospel, Caribbean zouk, Congolese rumba, and Afropop grooves. Kidjo covers a lot of ground--from Afro-pulsed renditions of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" to her indigenous take on George Gershwin's "Summertime." The rising hip-hop/gospel diva Kelly Price lends her sanctified sound to "Open Your Eyes," and Carlos Santana's bluesy guitar lines illuminate "Naima." The Tanzanian chant "Malaika" is dedicated to Kidjo's idol, Miriam Makeba, while "Senie," a spare track with background vocals and drums, is a shout out to the great Togolese singer Bella Bellow. Angelique Kidjo's music is a blend of African (where she was born), European (where she lives) and America (where she draws much inspiration). Don't waste too much time trying to categorize it - just enjoy it as it is excellent. Her cover of "Little Wing" very interesting and her own compositions are good. The beat is so good that you don't mind if you don't understand the language of many songs.

If you are new to Angelique Kidjo then this is the best introduction to her range and power, spanning the wide spectrum of her styles from her African roots to more European/American influences. If you are new to African music, this is an easy introduction, and if you have other of her albums you'll want to add this.

My only complaint - it was released before Black Ivory Soul, so doesn't include her more Brazilian music, which I love. Her voice is astonishing, her talent unique. I was lucky enough to see her live in Santa Cruz California a couple of years back and she could have filled the auditorium with her voice alone, without the aid of a microphone. She is one of those rare people who truly can sing astonishingly well. She blew me away.

Oleta Adams is like few other vocalists. It never fails but exterme talent and musical integrity are never fully appreciated. I first met Oleta in 1989 at a club in Dallas. She was performing at a friends birthday party. At this time she was relatively unknown outside of Kansas City. I knew upon listening to her that she was special. Time passed and suddenly she has a mojor hit with "Get Here". From that moment I have folled her every musical step. Movin' On shows that great artist can be slowed but not stopped. This CD has her skill shine above industry producers with vocals, keyboard playing and composing. "New Star" and "This is Real" are classic songs both lyrically and vocally. I have yet to hear an R&B artist articulate the soul and wholesomeness that comes from Adams' work. This CD does have a bit of useless producer polish that doesn't add to the vibe. Nevertheless, she overcomes it all; As she has in performance and on other recordings. Popular or not, I hope her music continues to flow to us true fans. Peace.

This CD took me by surprise. Nice blend of jazz, downtempo and housey tracks. Yukimi Nagano Is on a few tracks. Her voice is silky smooth and perfect for Hird's production. The first 3 tracks will get you. The truly stand out tracks are:

THe only reason that the cd does not get 5 stars is that there are a couple of tracks that don't flow with the mood the CD sets. Other than that it is well worth the purchase.

I keep this in the car and play it when doing errands. I'm a little picky when it comes to music but I love every song on this cd. Jadin wrote every one, except the obvious hymn at the end. What a great songwriter-I hope his future cds can remain at this level of excellence.

The first time I heard "What If" I was hooked. I immediately become one with the album and felt the message he was sending. I recommend the cd to anyone who is wanting to feel closer to GOD and might need a little inspiration.

Jadon Lavik's Moving On Faith is an addictive CD. I purchased this cd last summer, and instantly fell in love with it.

The lyrics AND the music are so wonderful. Highlights on the album, for me, are Following You, Saved By Grace, Redeeming King, How Majestic, and Nothing But The Blood. (Although I enjoy all the songs on the album.)

I am eagerly waiting for his second album.

I saw this show at the Celebration Theater a couple times, and absolutely loved it so I bought the CD right then and there. Since then, I have hooked other people onto the CD. It has songs - that will make you laugh hysterically, and then such emotionally powerful songs that can hit close to home....I was going to list my favorties, but I think I would list the entire album! Everyone that has gotten the album based on my strong recommendation has absolutely loved it. My only regret is that the show is not playing anymore, maybe one day....I hope :)

WONDERFUL-A MUST-LISTEN TO THE LYRICS.......2000-06-09

I first saw this show a few years back (3 times) at the Celebration theatre in Hollywood. I immediately thought, I need to have this music. My friend, Jamie Anderson, is in the show, but this isn't the only reason for my high rating. The music and the lyrics (please listen to them and pay attention to the play on words) are quite wonderful. The emotion that come through in each song is quite effective. You will be able to relate to at least one of the songs on this CD. I highly recommend this CD. My pushing of this CD to friends has probably been responsible for at least a couple dozen purchases. You won't be disappointed.

I jsut listened ta this at NorthernRidaz.com and its pretty sav! The FEW Mac Dre verses that are on this album are gold and Dubee, PSD, and Mac Mall come really nice... my only beef wit this album is I wish there was more Mac Dre!!!!!!!!! RIP FURLY!!!!!

Cool Techno-Tribal Groove.......2005-03-01

Wow ! This is a real departure from Zingaia's earlier releases and I love where they take me on this new musical adventure. Super cool techno-tribal beats, world rythyms and sampled voices from Africa and the Near and Far East blend beautifully. This release really transports me into a whole other world. While I really love the vocals from Abbi Spinner and Katlyn Breene from the previous releases, this new drum heavy trance inducing excursion from Zingaia is a complete a joy and an amazing listening experience.

Dissapointing!.......2005-02-16

I might like this album better if I didn't already have a fairly large collection of albums by Putamayo World Music which are much better than this! The reason I mention that is that this album reminds of the things that company releases, just not nearly as good.

I have both of their other releases which are superb! They are all about Sacred Sex and praise the Lady and the Lord. This album is bland and boring compared to the other two. The only good thing I can really find to say about it is that it might be enjoyable to drum along with it.

However, I have several other albums I like better which are also good for drumming along with. If thier next album isn't any better I will have to revise my opinion of Zingaia!

Soles on Earth is Out of this World!!!.......2004-10-27

This latest release by Zingaia (their third) is vastly different than their previous releases, both of which I absolutely love. Where their first release "Beneath the Veil" is a trance journey into the seductive heart of the Goddess, and their second release "Dancers of Twilight" featuring the alluring vocals of Abbi Spinner, further develops the original theme, deepening and expanding the voyage into musical spirit; with their latest release "Soles on Earth" Michael & Katlyn Breene and crew launch into a tribal poly-rhythmic trance dance groove that is no less than phenomenal. Middle Eastern, East Indian and African rhythms combine with sampled vocals from around the world to produce an album that sets the mind, body and spirit free to dance joyously to the pulsing rhythms of life.
