For his debut album on Talkin' Loud/Polygram, Bristol, England's Roni Size keeps with the label's tradition of releasing grandiose, song-oriented dance albums. Size teams up with DJs Krust, Die, and Suv; MC Dynamite; and vocalist Onalee to weld the rough-and-ready sounds of British drum & bass to the soul vibes of their hometown. On New Forms, the jazz concepts laid out on his earlier singles are expanded into song form, with live instrumentation and full vocals. The album never fails to be interesting; there's serious musical credibility underlying every track, but New Forms, with its straightforward pop sensibilities, is clearly aimed at the listener. Fans of the Bristol sound will appreciate the "Watching Windows" and "Share the Fall" singles, whose subtle melancholy blends seamlessly with Size's trademark drum assaults. Despite its length (23 tracks spanning 140 minutes), New Forms remains perfectly balanced and eminently listenable. --Matthew Corwine

5 out of 5 stars Changed My Listening.......2007-04-22

I first borrowed New Forms four years ago with a view to hearing more lush beats driven sounds like displayed in the #8 Heroes track, but without the vocals. On first album listen I didn't get it, the sound, or the form. Left alone for it to settle, on later reflection I realized I had just been taught how to listen to music anew.

Aside from the nice but deceptive sounding #1 Railing (no other track was as conventional) this album struck me after three long borrows, so I now recommend you this double bass jazz step manifesto.

Track wise, I found some parts to be cinematic - # 4 Lets Get It On, #6Matter Of Fact, #7 Mad Cat.
Other times like an epic score - #2 Brown Paper Bag.
I felt it had hype sounding manifesto lyrics like - #1Railing,(`Direct, believe me you ain't heard nothing yet!') #3 New Forms, #8 Heroes.
Into a formulated, and natural sounding blends of jazz step with eerie effects-#5Digital, # Mad Cat.
Killer buildups, and infinite ride through- #12 Morse code, and #13 Destination,
In my opinion very anti-pop, yet deserving of it's hype.
In short a new form.

Of all tunes most notably #6 Matter Of Fact, I found as the plethora point. A python of a song which sounds to me like an invite into the never ending openings of Roni sizes/reprezent Pandora's box. No preparation is enough for this one.

Some people have described Roni's album as a mantra- with its ever-cycling repetition of beats, which can never truly be absorbed by just a few listens. I think Roni Size's/Reprazent New Forms especially disc2 (Roni's own cerebral suite?) has the potential of a lifetime of listens. With the result that the rhythms may get under your skin in such a way that will leave you coming back for more like the track `Mad cat', and `Morse code', do to me ad infinite.
`Change my life' indeed. Leyman

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-04-07

"New Forms" was, is, and always will be the best Drum N Bass album out there.

Its not easy listening, its not very dancable, it is just pure music, and - I am afraid it sounds cheesy - it is really art. Its Jazzy, funky, very smooth, minimalistic, and its so subtle that you cannot express its quality in words.

Just let me tell you, you have to spend a little time on it - many songs are over 8 minutes long - but once you warm up to the album, you will listen to it over and over again, and you will find somthing new everytime you put it on.

This is as much 5 stars as it can get.

4 out of 5 stars It was downhill from here for Roni Size.......2006-01-22

New Forms won the Mercury Prize in the most abundant year in techno music history. That year being 1997. The Mercury Prize is given to the top British album of the year (yes, beating out Radiohead's OK Computer), so obviously that must mean that New Forms is one of the all-time great albums electronica has to offer right? Barely. Although disc 1 has the highlights: "Brown Paper Bag", "Let's Get It On", and "Morse Code", disc 2 maybe the best drum-and-bass cd ever recorded: a consistent onslaught of vocal-less soundscapes that keep the listener interested. Although the songs were written by Roni Size, the songs on disc 2 have an improvisatory feel to them, there's even a track called "Jazz". Disc 2 is ingenius, it is like Roni Size has a whole drum-and-bass opera in his head. But Reprazant deserves a lot of credit as well; the touches they put on every song are subtle and satisfying. "Brown Paper Bag" might be the greatest drum-and-bass song ever recorded and is a touchstone of tempo changes and intensity. It is truly a breathtaking ride of a song. The filler on disc 1 prevent New Forms from being an absolute masterpiece, but still recommended. B+

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-01-10

Funky, Jazzy, Hard Hittin' Classic DnB. Just outta curiousity though, from reading all the other DnB artist reviews around Amazon, How many "Kings Of Drum & Bass" are there? I've personally counted like 4-5 undisputed "Kings" Roni being one, but also Grooverider, who is a definate contender, also Goldie another heavy weight. Then you get into some of the other so called "Kings" like Dieselboy, don't get me wrong I loved Dungeoun Master and he's a great DJ, that's just it though, he's just a DJ. Roni is a true producer & a DJ as well. Hell, I'm a DJ that sometimes plays DnB, does that make me "King" of DnB? Hell NO!!! Roni's been around for quite a while now, he's always updating his sound, while never compromising, all of Roni's stuff is undenyably Roni. Andy C is another member of the DnB royal family, now he has produced some stuff, pretty good stuff even but he's still made his name a DJ. I personally think the crown is about to be passed to the new guys on the block "Pendulum". Until then though, ALL HAIL RONI SIZE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Drum and Bass 101.......2006-01-04

i cant say enough about this album... this is the kind of album that requires and open mind, and time to spare.. it is truly a drum and bass journey through all forms of the derivative style we call "breakbeat". i wont go song for song here because as a whole i feel the album is a complete gem with something for anyone who truly appreciates that art of drum and bass. i bought this back in 97, and it still gets heavy rotation on my ipod. thealbum leans into different moods throughout making it an enjoyable experience. im a heavy listener of drum and bass. iwas in the party scene for 6 yrs and people still talk about how influentual this album is till this day... give it a shot, im my opinion, top 5 cds ive ever purchased....

4 out of 5 stars NOT AS GREAT AS LP...BUT, STILL GREAT!!!.......2005-01-15

Loved this LP! Used to fall asleep listening to it night after night (years & years ago ) . Got the cd right away, and am somewhat befuddled. If they would have only presented the LP AS IS instead of mindlessly repeating tracks (takes) over & over & over &..well, you get the idea..,it gets repetitious & distracts from the impact of the original. A classic case of where MORE is not BETTER! 5 takes of DOWNSTAIRS, 5 of BREADWINNER, 4 of TERRACE THEME... Is this really neccessary?... TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good But Not for Gil Evans Completists.......2003-01-08

This is good guitar jazz. Not as soulful as Grant Green but still well done. This is probably Kenny Burrell's best album. However, there is one big if. If you are a Gil Evan's completist as I am, then realize he only accompanies a few of the tracks as is more in the background than the foreground. Therefore, though Gil Evans accompianiment is effective it is foreshadowed by the playing of Kenny Burrell.

5 out of 5 stars Moon and Sand.......2002-04-13

"Moon and Sand" by Kenny Burrell and the Gil Evans Orchestra is one of the most interesting guitar performances with a Latin combo that I have ever heard. The congas are dramatically panned to the left and the small drum kit at the right, giving the sensation of being stuck into the speakers.

The orchestra is in the back, and Kenny's acoustic guitar (recorded unamplified and without any compression devices) is closer to the listener. Rudy Van Gelder's engineering skills give the listener the sensation of being in a nightclub. Reverberation is one of the "key signatures" of the analog Verve Jazz sound in the sixties, in this recorded by Van Gelder at his personal studio.

5 out of 5 stars ... and soul.......2000-11-08

I like virtuoso guitar play and I heard much prominent guitar players, playing in different styles. But Kenny Burrell not only virtuoso - I think it plays by the soul. The impression from his play much increases due to accompaniment of Gil Evance orchestra. It became for me so strong that I change my bias against the big orchestras on love.

4 out of 5 stars Virtuoso Kenny.......1999-09-18

For a showcase of technical skills, these is without doubt the most flexible Kenny available.

Gil Evans' arrangements are a happy reminder of his genius for color, mood, and subtle shadings.

I believe that this music has a place in every Jazz library, if only for the fact that, it exhibits the two of them at the top-of-their-game.

5 out of 5 stars Space is the place!.......2007-04-05

"Cosmic Tones for Mental Therapy" tops the list for all-time greatest album title (tied with "Weasels Ripped My Flesh"). The thought of these sonic vibrations from outer space reconfiguring your neural synapses is actually quite appealing. This stuff really does sound like it's from "out there"! The echo and reverb drenched and somewhat low-budget sound actually gives it extra charm.

The music on "Cosmic Tones" is very abstract. It sounds quite bizzare in 2007, so I can only image what it must have sounded to people in 1961 - not even Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor we doing stuff this far out in 1961.

"Art Forms of Dimensions Tomorrow" is a transitional work between straight jazz and the free space music of "Cosmic Tones". It's certainly enjoyable music, but for me it's less interesting.

I was lucky to see Sun Ra Live in 1988 and 1990, and actually had a few words with him in 1990. Despite being wheelchair-ridden he still had tremendous presence and a projected a very joyful vibe. This joyfulness comes across in all of his music, which is one of the things that most appeals to me.

This album is as good a place to start as any, if you are interested in exploring Sun Ra's universe.

5 out of 5 stars Truth In Advertising.......2006-05-17

Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy and Art Forms Of Dimensions Tomorrow by Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra is quite a formidable title by any measure - and yet - when you actually listen to this astonishing piece of work you will find yourself thoroughly convinced - indeed - it is the only possible name for it.

They say that for an alcoholic, one drink is too many and one thousand aren't enough. I have discovered the same to be true of Sun Ra CDs, which seem to be breeding on my wall. Hearing one is too much because once you've listened it's too late to pretend you haven't heard what you've heard. One thousand aren't enough because each is different, the product of a man who explored constantly, driven by an inspired and fearless abandon.

Sun Ra CDs seem to break down into two categories, the really sharp old school jazz CDs and the intergalactic travel CDs. While I have praised Heliocentric Worlds Volume 1 in the past, I now think this is the indispensable Sun Ra CD - the one you simply MUST own. More than any other I've heard it bridges the gap between the two worlds of Sun Ra, in fact, listening to this CD it's difficult to tell which world you're in. At times it might be Morocco, other times it might be a spaceship rounding Venus, then again, some moments feel like a Cuban nightclub in the 1950's.

Maybe that's the real poetry of Sun Ra, you can never be really sure of anything. I may be back soon to revise my opinion again, after probing deeper into the enchanted world of Sun Ra. I wouldn't be at all surprised if I were again surprised.

2 out of 5 stars Not his best.......2006-01-24

This CD is really for the completest among avid fans of Sun Ra. If that describes you, then this release is a treat: two of Sun Ra's early albums that were not easy to come by on vinyl even back then, unless you lived in New York City.

The music, however, is of questionable quality, even when considered within the proper context of genre and period. Don't get me wrong: I'm all for the avant garde, but these recordings grated even on my nerves and I'm no stranger to dissonance. My favorite orchestral composers are Penderecki and Carl Stalling, some of my favorite jazz records are by Ornette Coleman, I own several CDs by the likes of Captain Beefheart and Xenakis, my favorite rock record is by Mr. Bungle, I've enjoyed concerts by Rene Lussier and Andre Duchesne...but this purchase was a disappointment to me, regardless of price.

The dissonance in this recording was just not at all musical to my ears. I'm not exactly sure what Sun Ra intended with these pieces but they had no emotional impact on me, nor did they even have any kind of rhythmic or hypnotic effect say like `Fire' by the Third Ear Band from their elements album. The interest here is purely intellectual and not worth repeated listening, in my opinion.

I agree that Sun Ra was a great musician and composer who made an important contribution to the avant guard in general, but these particular recordings are not among his finest achievements.

5 out of 5 stars nothing else like it.......2005-12-29

free jazz with form...or something like that. The composer in question is, Sun Ra, one of the most forward looking musical talents of the 20th century. This is one of his first truly 'out there' albums. In the 50's he was an innovator in a sort of big band style that incorporated some of the most strange and beautiful compositions with truly futuristic solos from the likes of John Gilmore (who pioneered the 'sheets of sound' style that John Coltrane would become famous for). 'Cosmic Tones/Art Forms' is something else completely. As other reviewers have said - you cannot define it. It is free - yet so different from what artists like Ornette Coleman were doing at the time. It has an organic almost folk like quality - it sounds almost ancient. It is closer to classical chamber music than to most jazz records. You can't even really compare it to Mingus - this is something else... Just listen and meditate on this one - so strange and beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Don't start here to get acquainted with Sun Ra.......2005-08-12

This is great Sun Ra, but by all means don't start here. Its crazy, surreal, and inaccesible, more so than "Space Is the Place" or "Easy Listening for Intergalatic Travel". However, if you are familiar with Sun Ra, but considor yourself a casual fan than this is an album to buy. It will help you delve into the world of the greatest Jazz artist who ever lived. Back in 8th grade I took a general music class, which was all about learning the history of jazz to attempt to make all the kid's taste in music better (it, for the most part, alienated them ever further). One of the albums our teacher played was this one, and the reaction of the class was pretty much the same. "Is this music?" As my tastes have matured, I grew to appreciate avant-garde music, the deconstruction and often times lack of a central rhythm. The music here isn't catchy, and it may appear to many as unlistenable. However, if you have a taste for weird and unusual music, you will fall in love with this album. This is more for fans of The Shaggs and Captain Beefheart than it is for fans of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Don't get the impression that Sun Ra and his band is merely jamming here however - its all part of a great artistic vision.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Szell Brings A Re-evaluation.......2005-09-21

Kudos to Decca for bringing together in one convenient set George Szell's recordings that were made for the Decca & Philips labels from the early 1950s and to mid 1960s (minus those recordings where he acted in the role of accompanist, ie: those with pianist Curzon). These recordings are very well known and have been collector's items for many years, so to have them together in a mid-price box is self recommending.

The Philips recordings were issued a few years ago as a 2-CD set in their "Early Years" series while a few of the Decca recordings have already been released as singles in their Classic Sound series (both series saw very spotty distribution Stateside). I detect very little change in the sound quality in these new Decca Classic Sound versions, though the couplings from CD to CD are better programmed here than they were before (Philips had to cram alot of music on those 2CDs).

The most-recommendable recordings in the bunch are Szell's Mozart 34, Dvorak 8, Beethoven Egmont, Mendelssohn Midsummer's Night and Brahms 3. Here, the usual Szell trademarks are fully on display: tight rhythms, crisp articulation and finely graded dynamics. However, I was unexpectedly disappointed in two recordings long held to be top Szell & basic repertoire recommendations: the Beethoven 5 and Sibelius 2.

The Beethoven 5 has always been touted as more relaxed and in better sound than Szell's CBS 5th with Cleveland. But comparing this new Decca re-issue to Sony's recent "Original Jacket" issue of the Cleveland 5th, I didn't find that to be true at all. The Sony version now stands - to me, at least - as the better representation of Szell in this warhorse, both as an interpretation and in recorded sound. Indeed, the Concertgebouw recording suffers from an extremely lackluster and sloppy second movement that probably could have used a retake. Something just isn't right here - conductor and orchestra are not on the same page of the playbook...which is not what one expects in a recording by such a strong-willed technician as Szell. As an overall performance, this Concertgebouw recording is now easily surpassed by Szell's Sony effort, not to mention alternate versions by Kleiber, Karajan, Bernstein and others (but, again, you need to hear the Szell/Sony in the Original Jackets remastering, not the earlier Essential Classics version).

As for the Sibelius 2, we have a situation where poor intonation and hesitant execution in the orchestra knock this version off the pedestal of received opinion. And, with Szell's live Tokyo performance with Cleveland now widely available, his Concertgebouw version comes in direct competition with - Szell himself, and in a much better and much more cohesive recording. With the "if only he had recorded this with Cleveland" caveat removed, the choice is now clear - get the Cleveland version if you want Szell in Sibelius 2. That recording remains a top recommendation, though Ormandy, Maazel, Vanska and even Karajan have all brought their particular strengths to this piece as well, strengths that are much different than Szell's forte(s). There's plenty of room at the top when it comes to great recordings of great music.

Having lived with both the Beethoven and Sibelius for years, it's a bit disconcerting to have to make the above observations, but there you have it.

For the rest of the set, it is good to have Szell's interpretations of Tchaikovsky and Schubert on hand in such good sound. But truth be told, there are better versions out there of these works as well, the Tchaik 4 in particular (which in Szell's hands hangs fire in the least-expected places). The Baroque recordings included here are testament to a long-gone era when the standard Baroque works (worques?) were made acceptable to orchestral audiences by beefing them up to quasi-Wagnerian proportions. And even here, Szell is bettered by his contemporaries like Adrian Boult and Karl Richter in similar repertoire. A Baroque curate's egg if there ever was one.

Having said all of the above, I can still safely recommend this set to just about anyone interested in Szell or the repertoire on offer. Yes - work to work, there are better versions available, some from Szell himself. But *overall,* this set will provide plenty of pleasure and musical excitement to everyone save the anti-Szell wing of the classical music zealotry.

Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars George Szell is best known from his Columbia recordings.......2005-08-31

George Szell (1897-1970) is best known from his recordings made in the 1950s and 60s for Columbia records, mostly with the Cleveland Orchestra, many of which are now on Sony Classical. But he also made a number of recordings during the same period for Decca and Philips in Europe, with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam; Vienna Philharmonic, and London Symphony, all of which are included in this box. If you think of Szell as a cold, calculating technician - and he could be in some of his Columbia recordings - he has precision here in spades, but also warm sound, perhaps partly from the remastering for this release.

Szell's Concertgebouw Beethoven Symphony 5 is MUCH BETTER than his Cleveland recording. The precision is there, but it also sings, and is warmer than the Cleveland recording (Sony, coupled with Symphony 2). Szell's Vienna EGMONT is one of the best recordings of the work, if not THE best recording of the stereo age, even 36 years after it was recorded. The Sibelius 2 (also with the Concertgebouw) is warm and fine in every way. The Concertgebouw played beautifully for him, and it shows.

The Mendelssohn MIDSUMMER NIGHT's DREAM, Schubert ROSAMUNDE, Mozart Symphony 34, Handel WATER MUSIC and ROYAL FIREWORKS MUSIC are all excellent, too. Some may have favorite performances, but I cannot imagine anything better than Szell's Concertgebouw Mozart 34: perhaps Bohm (DG) and Krips (Philips).
The 5th disc has two classic mono recordings of the early 1950s:
Dvorak's Symphony 8, and Brahms 3, both with the Concertgebouw. The sound is just fine: beautifully remastered, and Szell's performances very solid and musical.

As you can tell, I'm very happy with this, and would advise anyone with $30.00 spare change to pick it up at their first opportunity.

    5 out of 5 stars Faces Forms & Illusions.......2005-04-09

Old Delerium sounds nothing like their current sound. There are no live vocals (some sampled vocals), and it is all based on synths instead of a mix of accoustic and electronic. This is more of a mix between early Jarré, a tad of Kraftwerk and some Enigma. One can say that this is more laid back new age music then their recent pop/electronica. One can not say that one is better then the other since the music is so very different. This album is awesome for relaxation and great to study to whilst the recent albums have a more dance oriented theme. This is a very nice album that shows how much Bill Leeb and company have tinkered and changed Delerium through the years and shows his genius.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2002-07-02

This is an awesome Delerium album. I would recommend this album simply for the song Dark Star. It is one of the moodiest songs that Leeb has ever done. Very dark and eerie...it's perfect. I highly recommend this album for all Delerium fans.

ANEMO's edgy but melodic sound combines rock and pop forms conceived in the fertile minds of Hazelle Woodhurst, Kingsley Sage and Matt Palmer punctuated with modern crunchy drum loops and rock and metal guitars, all of it tied together with the glorious voice of Hazelle.

5 out of 5 stars They are the real deal.......2006-07-03

Lots of different sounds, but a similar style throughout. These folks are the real deal. I heard "Made of Fiction" as the soundtrack to a video of a multiplayer online game (Aces High.) Immediately ordered it. Not dissapointed now that I have it. Feels kinda special to be in on these folks before everyone else is. It won't be for long...

5 out of 5 stars This was a quality Christmas present.......2005-12-29

This is really fun music. I like bands that haven't hit the mainstream yet and found this in my stocking on Christmas morning. Definitely a good choice.

The music itself is varied and soulful without pretence and strikes me as quite imaginative. A couple tracks that stand out to me now are 'Slowburn' and 'Standing in the wrong place.'

I hope I don't sound too much like a sales person, but this is really, really quality stuff here. If Anemo doesn't make it big, it will be a huge crime. Listen and enjoy. It will rock and sooth you at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Real Musical Talent.......2005-11-05

This band are truly versatile. It makes such a change to hear music performed by really talented musicians, rather than aethestically pleasing clones. The album has several different sounds to it which might make some people wary, but have no fear because they pull it off every time. The variety means the album never gets dull and you hear something new everytime you play it.

    Definitely one for the i-pod!

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2005-11-04

One thing I like about this band is the different sounds. From what I can tell, the released singles are great but only really give one perspective on this music. Every song is just a little different and takes you on a roller coaster experience through the entire album that works surprisingly well. I can imagine these guys getting compared to other musicians out there, which to me would be a shame, as I really think they are defining themselves. If you are looking for some new music, Anemo are definitely the way to go.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Anemo!.......2005-11-04

This is the best album I've bought for ages. My favourite songs are the heavier ones, with furious driving electronic beats, heavy guitars and soaring vocals. Anemo also show a more sensitive side with some beautiful quiet moments, which still retain the tinge of rock-elektronica. Miss this one at your peril!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful album!!.......2007-05-15

Got this cd on a whim and have been fully entranced by it. Blues and folk-influenced, Rachel's vocal stylings are unique and charming. Can't stop singing these tunes of which some are light with a humorous edge like favorite Cleveland, others wonderfully sweet and real, like 3am! I only wish rachel had 3 more albums under her belt for me to listen to. She is so talented and buying this will not be a decision you'll regret!

5 out of 5 stars On her way to being a legend..........2005-10-27

Rachel Ries has an unbelievable voice and talent to match. I cannot recommend this album enough. If you like lyrics with meaning and great music behind it you will love this album. Folky, and a bit jazzy--definitely has rhythm. I saw her play at a small gathering and she is as good in person as on this CD. One of my favorite albums. Glad to own it.

Country? Listen to Last Words. Cowboy, Listen to Billy Gray. Killed his paw and married his maw? They only do that in Arkansas. Oedipus Rex. Biblical? Try Number 667, The Neighbor of the Beast. Science-fiction? Go Tap Dancing on the Moon. What happened to dinosaurs? Their brains were small and they died. This is one of my favorite CD's. I have listened to it a hundred times since I got it as a gift a couple of years ago. For variety and hummable tunes, try it, you'll like it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.
